JEFFERSON JACKSON "Jeff" SANDERS History NM v2, p 832:

"Jefferson J. Sanders, a farmer of Tularosa, was born in Australia in 1863 and on coming to the United States when ten years of age became a resident of Texas. His father was native of Tennessee and the mother of England, and in 1873 they arrived in the Lone Star state. Jefferson J. Sanders accompanied them on their removal to New Mexico in 1891 and since that time they have resided in Tularosa. Mr. Sanders of this review became proprietor of the Sanders Hotel, which he conducted until 1905, and in the meantime he gave considerable attention to farming and is now devoting his energies exclusively to general agricultural pursuits. His principal crop is alfalfa, but he believes that fruit can be profitably cultivated in this part of the country and is a firm believer in the future of the valley.

"Mr. Sanders was married to Miss Ada Williamson, a native of Tenness, and they have five children: William, Barney, May, Nellie and Edward. They occupy a fine new residence which stands in the midst of a fertile farm, indicating the careful supervision and practical progressive methods of the owner in its cultivation and improvement."

History of NM v3, pp 31-2 [NB, there are several known factual errors in the following]:

"JEFFERSON J. SANDERS. Since coming to New Mexico in August, 1892, Jefferson J. Sanders has been identified with the most substantial interests and activities of Otero County, a farmer and rancher, and is a former member of the Board of County Commissioners.

"Mr. Sanders was born a British subject in the mining town of Adalong, 300 miles inland from Sidney, Australia. The date of his birth was January 17, 1863. His father was a gold miner in that region. William M. Sanders, his father, was born in the United States, became a British citizien in Australia, and subsequently resumed his American citizenship rights by naturalization. A native of Tennessee, he left there at the age of eighteen, and for a time was a plantation overseer at Bastrop, Texas. After the discovery of gold in California he started west, crossing old Mexico to Matzatlan in Lower California, where he took a vessel for San Francisco. He did most of his prospecting as a placer miner in the vicinity of Stockton, California. Some of his companions there were Hogan, Cassidy and Burdette, and after some months in California they all started for Australia. William M. Sanders worked in the Australian mines for several years, and then engaged in farming and ranching. He married in Australia Miss Sarah Hargraves, who was born near the City of London, and accompanied her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hargraves, to Australia, where the family became farmers and ranchers, and her parents lived out their lives near Tumut.

"When Jefferson J. Sanders was still a small child his parents left Australia, embarking on the ship British Commodore, under command of Captain Rands, and after a voyage of fourteen weeks crossed the Pacific to San Francisco. From San Francisco they went east to Denver, then a mere village, and from there to Tennessee, the native state of William M. Sanders. His wife and children remained two years in Giles County while he went to Texas, settling in Menard County, where his family joined him later. They all remained in Menard County until 1892 , when they came into New Mexico, settling in Otero County. William M. Sanders after that lived retired until his death in 1896 at the age of seventy years. His wife died the previous year, at the age of sixty-five. She was a member of the Episcopal Church. Their children were: Elizabeth, who died at Albuquerque, New Mexico, in 1887, the wife of William Bruce; Alice, who married John Williamson in Giles County, Tennessee, and died at Roswell, New Mexico, in 1891; William, who died in Menard County at the age of twenty-four; and Jefferson J.

"Jefferson J. Sanders was about ten years of age when his parents moved to Texas. Most of his education was acquired back in Tennessee. As a youth he was associated with his father in the cattle industry, and later in New Mexico, and for four years they were partners in a mercantile enterprise at Tularosa. After that Mr. Sanders concentrated his attention upon his farm interests. He entered a homestead almost against the townsite of Tularosa on the west, and proved it up and has made it one of the desirable farm homes of the locality. He cultivates about 100 acres, and his chief crop is alfalfa.

"In territorial times Mr. Sanders was elected a member of the Otero County Board of Commissioners, and served some eight or ten years in that office. Among his fellow members were Doctor Gilbert, Doctor Haxby, D. M. Southerland, Mr. Sewell and Mr. Gregg. Perhaps the most important work done by the board during this time, aside from a routine administration of county affairs, was the construction of the Box Canyon Highway to Cloudcroft and the highway from Tularosa to Alamogordo. Mr. Sanders is a democrat in politics. In his early years in Otero County he was member of the Tularosa School Board.

"In October, 1887, in Giles County, he married Miss Ada Williamson, daughter of Thomas and Martha (Wilkerson) Williamson. She died at Tularosa in 1914. The children of this marriage were: Will T., who died unmarried; Barney B., who died in 1921, at the age of twenty-eight, and by his marriage to Evelyn Gifford left a son, Will Sanders; May, the wife of Marshall Parker, of Denver; Nell, the wife of Ralph Simpers, of Tularosa and the mother of two children, Robert and Ada Simpers; and Ed Sanders, a farmer at Tularosa, who married Miss Tillman. During the World war the sons Barney and Ed were regularly enlisted in the service, Barney doing clerical work at a camp in Georgia, while Ed was in the navy, in training and other duty on Mare Island at San Francisco.

"Mr. Sanders married in March, 1919, Miss Hazel Siflett, who was born in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1877, daughter of W. J. Siflett. Her mother was a Miss Parrott. Mrs. Sanders was educated at a college at Berea, near Cleveland. Her brother, Robert Siflett, was an accountant with an insurance company in New York City. Mrs. Sanders, who died February 15, 1924, was a member of the Episcopal Church, and was thoroughly devoted to her home and her children. Her daughters were Alice Jeanette and Edith Hortense."

From Sonnichsen's "Tularosa", recounting the events leading up to the murder trial of Oliver Lee and Jim Gililland (pp 153-4):

"It seems there was a poker game in Tobe Tipton's saloon at Tularosa a few days before matters came to a head. The players were Oliver Lee, A. B. Fall, George Curry, Tipton, and Jeff Sanders. Play suddenly ceased when Pat Garrett's lanky form appeared in the doorway, and there was a tingling silence as Tipton got up, welcomed the unexpected guest, and invited him to join the game. Pat acknowledged Tobe's introductions and said he would sit in."

What makes this exciting is that Garrett, Sherriff of Dona Ana County, was known to be looking for a way to arrest Oliver Lee, so this was a tense game. Albert Bacon Fall would later defend Lee and Gililland in the trial, successfully, and then become Senator from NM. George Curry would become the Sheriff of Otero County and then Governor of NM. Garrett was already famous for killing Billy the Kid. Oliver and Jim expected he would treat them similarly.

Also, from p 57 of "Things Remembered, Otero County", in the article "History of Orogrande" by Clif McDonald, is this version:

"In early spring 1898, Garrett sat in on a marathon three-day poker game at Tobe Tipton's Tularosa saloon among Tobe, Jeff Sanders, Albert Fall, George Curry, and Oliver Lee, where he and Lee amicably discussed possible service of warrants against Lee. The grand jury heard Garrett's evidence against Lee, McNew, and Gililland during late March but adjourned April 2 without issuing any true bills or even interviewing the accused. Dissatisfied, Garrett obtained bench warrants from Judge Parker and arrested Bill McNew on Main Street in Las Cruces. Lee and Gililland returned from business in El Paso, and left Las Cruces on horseback for home without realizing Garrett had arrested McNew. But after crossing San Augustin Pass, they noted a posse in pursuit, probably some of Colonel Fountain's old militia deputized by Garrett. Lee and Gililland turned what looked like a lynch mob back with a few warning shots, but realizing that the situation had become more dangerous and inflamed, they tried to keep a lower profile, avoiding Las Cruces." [NB: Lee and Gililland would be tried and acquited of murdering Colonel Fountain and his son, still an unsolved mystery.]

This story brings together my [Alvy Ray Smith (3)] Mother's side of the family (Jeff Sanders) and my Father's (Jim Gililland).

FatherJESSE RICHARD SMITH b. c 1818, d. 1906
MotherELIZABETH MARY HARRISON b. c 1829, d. 24 Jun 1884
BENJAMIN BENTON SMITH The death date and his father's name are from an LDS (Mormon) genealogical record submitted by Mrs. Ray Costner, Box 134, Kirtland, New Mexico 87417 which also says she is a granddaughter of Benjamin and Lucretia. This record, in turn, credits the death information to Benjamin's death certificate. [NB, I now have this death certificate too.] He and his brother Jesse R. Jr. were twins. The following stories are from a letter by Mae Wills, my father's half aunt, to my father 7/26/93:

"When he [her Dad, Benjamin Smith] and Uncle Jess were quite small boys they were left home alone once for a short time. Grandpa had a hound dog that he liked a lot. So the Boys decided to hang the dog. Horrible idea. They made a loop in a rope and tied it to something then coaxed the dog up on a box and somehow put the loop around his neck and pushed the box from under him. Then they wanted to undo it but couldn't think to push the box back so left him to choke and because they were frightened by what they had done ran off and hid. When the Family came home they had quite a hunt for the Boys.

While he was still in his teens he became angry at Grandpa over something and decided to leave home. He took off down the road - with nothing. After a while Grandpa caught up with him in the buggy. He was determined he wasn't going to be made to go back. But all Grandpa said was he was sorry he felt he had to leave, and handed him a $20.00 bill. Turned the buggy about and started home. Because he didn't seem to mind if he did leave Dad jumped in the buggy and went home with him."

My grandmother, Lucy Gililland Raley, who was not too fond of Ben, he was married to Lucy's sister Crishy, tells this story about how they separated. Ben was prone to drink too much on occasion and Crishy was getting tired of it. She told Ben that the next time he came home drunk she was going to leave. Well, he came home very drunk and Crishy sewed him up in a mattress tick, put their children in the wagon and set out for California. She only got as far as the valley on the Gila River at Duncan, AZ where she remained long enough for the children to grow up. Her grandson, Alvy Ray Smith [Alvy (2)], has composed a very well written story of her life.

WILLIAM FRANKLIN GILILLAND A source here is the Mormon (LDS) records furnished by Maurine Dearman Webb, 401 Oasis, Chaparral, New Mexico 88021 in 1990. The information on his spouse, parents, and children is from the same source. Further information (forwarded by Maurine Webb) is the Mormon genealogical submission form submitted by Lucy Grace Moody, Box 293, Eagar, Arizona 85925 on 1 Jan 1979. So this serves as an index into that vast record. Mrs. Webb adds the following information about William:

"Must have changed his name during the Civil War. His brothers fought on the Union side and Will was a Confederate. A tintype photo shows the stripe down his trouser leg of a Confederate uniform but I cannot find his name in the military archives of either side.

Probably married Rosetta Moore under her name or an assumed name since I cannot find a record of their marriage. Clay Smith [Richard Gililland's son-in-law] said he talked to the preacher who married them. `Will and Rosetta put all the kids in a wagon and drove down out of the hills to get married' - not in NM or Texas. [Which kids? Not theirs presumably.] They had 4 children when they moved from Junction TX to the Mimbres River in NM. [We believe this to be an incorrect number.] Then within the year they homesteaded in the Sacramento Mountains on the Fresnal River.

I found records in Austin, TX where Will was in trouble with the law and lost his land in TX. He loved to tar and feather preachers, spent time in jail for it too.

When spelling a word with the letter `Z' he would say ``izzard'. Example: B-U-izzard-izzard-A-R-D, buzzard!

Sold the NM homestead to help pay court costs when oldest son, Jim, was accused of murder about turn of the century. He and Rosetta lived on 10th Street in College addition in Alamogordo, NM after that.''

The 1993 Webb evidence has these notes:

"The history of Audrain county MO lists Jesse R. Gililland, his history in MO, his family, occupations, and both of his marriages and the children of each. State Historical Society of Missouri, HISTORY OF AUDRIAN COUNTY MISSOURI, 1884 St. Louis National Historical Society, St. Louis, MO; pp. 602-606. Photocopy in poss of Maurine De Arman Webb, 401 Oasis, Chaparral, N M 88021-9681.
...
Will was a Confederate raider who changed his name at least once. He must have married Rosetta under an assumed name, no record of their marriage can be located. His brother, James Allen, was a Union soldier. I can find no record of Will's enlistment or service in the CSA under his correct name.

Will and Rosetta had 4 children in Brown County, TX then moved to Kimble County where 4 more children were born then they spent a year or so on the Mimbres River in Grant County, N M where some of Rosetta's relatives lived. After they went to High Rolls in the Sacramento Mountains, little Johnny was born but did not survive.

Will was known to have spent time in jail for tarring and feathering preachers, several preachers. It caused him to lose his homestead in Kimble County after which he recorded all land in Rosetta's name. Most of this information came from talks with his 3rd child, my grandma Lucy, and from TX State records. I can find no records in Brown Co., TX on the family. The Kimble Co. place was right on the banks of Bear Creek now known as the North Fork of the Llano River, another creek is named Bear now. Junction, TX courthouse has the land records.

The homestead on the Fresnal River near High Rolls, N M has changed hands 13 times since the Gilillands lived there. It is on the high side of a steep slope where a large spring runs year around. This land was sold in the 1890's to help pay for the murder trial involving Jim Gililland, Oliver Lee and Bill McNew. The lawyere Albert B. Fall had an expensive retainer but was able to get the 3 men acquitted. The story is very well told in the book, PAT GARRETT by Leon Metz. Will and Rosetta bought a house on 10th St. in Alamogordo and lived there for the rest of their lives.

Land was auctioned off but didn't bring a high enough price so it was held to be auctioned later. The Gililland family never returned to TX.      James Robert "Jim" Gililland He was accused of murder in the famous Fountain case in NM, which is still unsolved. He and codefendant Oliver Lee were found not guilty in a highly charged trial. The history of the case and trial are recorded in "Tularosa, Last of the Frontier West", C L Sonnichsen, University of New Mexico Press, Albuquerque, 1960 (reprinted in paperback 1980). See also "Transcription of Tape by Mae and Edith".

The following obituary (apparently) was found among some old photos sent to my father by my grandmother Pearl:

"When he was a very small child the family moved to Kimble County, Texas. At the age of 12 the family, with a small herd of cattle moved to near Deming, New Mexico on the Mimbres River. At the age of 13 the family moved with the cattle to the Sacramento Mountains [NM] to the old Gililland Farm near where Mountain Park now is. Working with and for various cattle ranchers in the White Mountains and on the Tularosa Valley and in the Sacramento Mountains quite a time being on the Famous Oliver Lee Ranch. In November 1896 was married to Miss Adella May Gould. On June 15, 1902 he arrived with his wife and small herd of cattle and established the old Jim Gililland Ranch in Socorro County in the San Andres Mountains. Which Ranch he operated individually and successfully for more than 37 years. In February 1940 he and Mrs. Gililland sold their Ranch holdings and after traveling one year in Eastern States bought property in Hot Springs where they made their home until his passing. For a short time prior to his retiring from ranch operations he was elected a member of the Advisory Board with the U. S. Grazing Service. He was a Peace Officer for many years [!] by various appointments by County and State Officials. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and for a time he was a member of the Odd Fellow Lodge. Survivors besides his wife include sisters, Mrs. Lucretia Miller, Fort Thomas, Arizona and Mrs. Lucy Raley, El Paso, Texas. Brothers George Gililland, Taylor, Arizona and Dick Gililland, Tularosa, New Mexico.'' [Was the ranch sold as part of the US Government acquisition of land for the A-bomb, Holloman Air Force Base, and White Sands Missile Range purposes? It is certainly now part of that military reservation.]

Web 1993:

"1880 U.S. Census, Kimble Co., TX, p. 2, Sup. Dist. 8, #8-10. Lists W. F. Gililland family. James Robert is a young boy.
...
Dr. C. L. Sonnichsen visited with my grandmother, Lucy Gililland Raley, on several occasions and recorded her rememberances of the old days in Orogrande, N M> He wrote the book Tularosa, Last Of The Frontier West including many of her stories about her brother Jim Gililland.
...
James Robert was known as Uncle Jim to all of us. He was somewhat of a badman in that he had numerous scrapes with the law. He was always very kind, soft spoken and a real gentleman as far as I remember him. Since he was tried for murder and aquitted, no one would ever talk about him or his deeds.

During the summer of 1938 I spent that summer in Hot Springs, Truth or Consequences, N M now, with my Grandma Lucy and Uncle Jim. They are brother and sister. He owned one of the hot springs bath houses and he asked his sister to join him to care for the bath house until he could sell it. His wife, Della Gould had developed a severe mental problem, she was chained to the kitchen wall and my grandmother told me not to get within the length of the chain because Della was very strong and might hurt me, I was 10. She didn't mean to hurt anyone but she could'nt control her motor responses. There was a drain in the floor for water to drain when she was "washed" or cleaned and my grandmother was very gentle in doing these chores for Della. Uncle Jim finally found a home to place her in but it was difficult for him.

They never had any children but were married for a long time. My feeling is that Uncle Jim made some kind of a deal to marry Della during his trial. It has to do with an eye witness to the murder being ready to testify against Uncle Jim, this witness was Della's brother. All of this is my personal opinion. The story of Uncle Jim Gilillands' trial is very well told in the book, PAT GARRETT by Leon Metz.

Other family members know much more about him than I do. After Bill Mc New began to harrass Grandma Lucy's family in order to get her land and water, Jim told him to leave her alone and Bill never tried anything again. I have a letter written by George Mc New admitting that his father, Bill Mc New, killed Lucy's husband, Bob Raley. The family always knew it but had no proof until this letter. Lucy brought charges against Bill but he was aquitted.

A friend, John Dickerson now deceased, said when he was a kid working for the OICY min in Orogrande that he would run everytime he saw Bob Raley and Bill Mc New near the same place because they were always shooting at each other. Uncle Jim was a great comfort to his widowed sister, Lucy.

Adela was called Della by the family. She had a severe mental problem and had to be restrained later in her life. She had at least one sister and one brother. Uncle Jim took very good care of her until she died. I knew her only briefly, 3 months or so in the summer of 1938 at Hot Spring, N M.
...
Adela had a sister Maude Gould who married Riley Baker.

CONFLICT: Because of different sources, our information has several conflicts."

M, b. 7 August 1887, d. 14 February 1961
FatherWILLIAM FRANKLIN GILILLAND b. 19 Feb 1841, d. 13 Dec 1913
MotherROSETTA MOORE b. 26 Jan 1850, d. 17 Dec 1915
Richard Lafayette "Dick" Gililland I have two genealogical records for the family of William Franklin Gililland prepared by Mrs. Maurine Webb. One is dated 1979 and the other 1982. They disagree in several particulars, so in every case I have used the most recently dated information. For example, the 1979 marriage information she lists for Richard is Geneva Madie Wood, 7 Aug 1908.

Source of the following is a letter from my father, Alvy (2) Smith, to me dated June 27, 1994:

"He was born on the Fresnal after Wm Franklin G. had homesteaded there. Uncle Dick and Aunt Geneva stayed with us a few times here in Clovis - he was a great story teller - and when I would ask him for more specific details about the Fountain killing and other sensitive things, he would say: 'Let's let a few more of these old buzzards die, then I'll fill you in.' Before he got to that, he died. Their San Andreas ranch was on the remote side - 50 miles or so west of Tularosa to Rhodes Pass (where Eugene Manlove Rhodes is buried) - then north for a number of miles. Very rugged country. The one time my family went out there ... we went on north, sort of on the ridge line of the San Andreas to Uncle Jim [Gililland]'s ranch - located in Mockingbird Gap. ... If we would have gone a few more miles north of Uncle Jim's ranch, we would have been at the Trinity Site - where the first atom bomb was exploded. When Uncle Dick was evicted from his ranch by the Government so they could drop missiles on it - he moved into Alamogordo." Richard was born at Mountain Park, Otero, New Mexico, USA, on 7 August 1887. 1979 family group sheet give his birthplace as Alamogordo, Otero, NM and date as 7 Aug 1888. The 1982, used here, gives Mountain Park, Otero, NM on 7 Aug 1887..1,2 He married Madie Ginerva (Ginevra, Gineva) Wood at Tularosa, Otero, New Mexico, USA, on 30 March 1911. 1979 evidence gives name and date as WOOD, Geneva Madie, 7 Aug 1908. The 1982 gives them as Madie Gineva WOOD, 30 Mar 1911..1,2,3,4 Richard died on 14 February 1961 at age 73. 1979 evidence: 1962; 1982 evidence: 14 Feb 1961..1,2

Willie Grace Gililland She married her husband at the Gililland Place on the Fresnal near High Rolls. Willie was born while her father Wm Franklin Gilliland was in jail for tarring and feathering a preacher. She was named Willie because her mother doubted if she would see her father again. Willie died when Ella was born, so Ella was raised by her aunt Jessie Gilliland Hournbuckle. [Source: Call to my father Alvy (2) Smith from Ella Savage, 4/4/92] There are two spellings of Hournbuckle in the information given to me. The other spelling is Hornbuckle. Willie was born at Kimble, Texas, USA, on 18 September 1884. Webb 1982 evidence gives birthplace as Kimball Co, TX. Her daughter Ella Meyer Savage says it is Kimble Co, TX. Several sources give it as Brown Co, TX, however..1,2,3,4 As of 2 December 1900,her married name was Meyer.1,2,5,6 She married Andrew Peter "Andy" Meyer at Gililland Home, Fresnal Canyon, High Rolls, Otero, New Mexico, USA, on 2 December 1900. 1979 family group sheet gives husband's name only: "MEYER, Andrew Peter" - no date. Similarly the 1982 family group sheet gives his name as Andy MYERS and no date. For place see Ella Meyer Savage phone call in main text. Data as currently entered is from 1984 family group sheet.

Nielson: Willie Grace GILILLAND m 2 Dec 1900, Gililland Home, Otero, NM, spouse: Andrew Peter MYERS..1,2,5,6 Willie died on 18 November 1920 at Booker, Lipscomb, Texas, USA, at age 36. Family group sheet gives deathdate only: "Nov 1920". But 1984 family group sheet gives full details..1,3 Her body was interred at Booker, Lipscomb, Texas, USA, at Friend's Cemetery.3

SHEPPARD (SHEPHERD) "Shep" BAKER Sheppard did not migrate with his father's family to AR in 1833. He did eventually go to AR, but in about 1840 (see below). His brother Aaron, however, although married, did migrate to AR with his father in 1833.

US census, 1880, Zavala Co., TX, ED 153, roll 1334 p. 472D, dwelling 46, family 52:
Shephard Baker, 71, farmer, illiterate, TN SC SC
Sinah, 30, wife, illiterate, MO AL TN
Joseph, 23, son, illiterate, herder, TX TN ?
William 19, son, herder, TX TN MO
Sarah, 16, daughter, TX TN MO
Martha, 13, daughter, TX TN MO
[next door are the families of David and Johnathan Baker]

From the Jim Lair book about Carroll Co, AR:

"In the late 1830's, John Baker's son, Sheppard and his wife, Rebecca (Brumley) Baker and their four sons came from Southeast Missouri to establish a home for themselves in an area west of what became Berryville. By that time Sheppard Baker was a minister.

This family lived in Carroll County until the 1840's, and during that time at least three children were born - Melvina (1841), Mary (1846), and Isaac J. (1847). Then, in the late 1840's, the Sheppard Baker family moved on to seek a life for themselves in Williamson County, Texas. There Sheppard Baker married for a second time, Lena (Herns) Baker, and they became the parents of a least one child, David Baker (1850)."

He married - had 10 children - started west - first wife died. Married again (Sina Harris) - had 10 more children. Martha Baker was his 19th child. Source: Margaret Smith (Coleman). See also Alvy Smith note.

German. Came from Kentucky to Arkansas and on to Texas in 1840. Of the 10 children with Sina Harris, only seven lived to maturity. Source: Dorothy Lee Parrish family tree.

David Sheppard Baker by Mary Hughey:

"Several years earlier, Shep, as he was always called, moved his first family from Kentucky to northern Arkansas. Then about 1840 he, his wife, and at least two children, Ike and Vina, started to Texas. his wife died on the way.

The next we know of Shep, he was settled on a farm in Williamson County. With him were Ike, Vina and his new wife, Sina. Vina, the youngest, was fifteen at the time he remarried, and Sina was not much older.

We can't be sure if David was actually Sina's first child or not; but he was the oldest of those she managed to raise. Three of her ten children died as infants, and their names are not known. Seven lived to marry and raise children. They were David, Riley, Jonathan, Joseph, Andrew, Sarah and Martha. Sarah married a man named Lon Buck. Martha married an old blacksmith named McKindry. Later, she divorced him and married a lay preacher named Miller."

There is inconsistency in various pieces of evidence concerning the name of Sheppard's second wife. The WFT evidence gives it as Lena Herns. In our family it is strongly believed to be Sina Harris, daughter of David Harris (Irish) and Frances Biarden (English Welsh). My father (Alvy Smith (2)) says Sina lived with his mother and was a primitive Baptist. In other words, it is hard to believe anything other than Sina Harris. We have now established (9 Jun 2000) that the reading "Lena Herns" is an understandable misreading of the Sina-Shepherd marriage certificate if one did not know her name was Sina Harris, as we do. NB, this marriage certificate spells his name as Shepherd.

From the Faye Miller Lewis letter evidence:

"The first record we have of the Baker family is when Sheppard Baker (always known as Shep) left Kentucky about 1840 and headed for Texas. He was a farmer by trade and a Baptist lay preacher on the side. He had his family with him -- there were ten children. They stopped in Arkansas for two years and his wife died while they lived there. Soon he and two of his youngest children, who were in their teens, moved on to Texas.

He first stopped in Caldwell County for a short time, then moved on to Williamson County and settled there. After a short time, he met and married Sina Harris who was younger than eight of his children. She was part Indian.

Ten children were born to this union but three of them were burned to death while small when their home burned. The children that lived to maturity were: David Sheppard, Riley, Joseph, Jonathan, Andrew, Sarah, and Martha Ann." [I assume this is birth order]

Also from that letter:

"Several years later [after 1884] Shep came out and lived in his wagon. While he was living close by, a dance was planned in the house. He was so opposed to dancing that he hitched up and moved his wagon out of hearing of the festivities. This country was too rough for him so he soon returned to the Nueces country where he died in 1892."

The "Nueces country" refers to the Nueces river that flows through Vance, TX. To back this up: "Dave and Lizzie ... farmed for two or three years in the Running Brushy area -- they also had some livestock. About 1872 they moved to the Nueces River near a post office called Bullhead (now the town of Vance, Tex.)" Dave is son David Sheppard Baker.

From 1850 Williamson Co TX census:

"68 77 Shepard Baker 40 M Farmer 400 Kentucky
[Frank Baker version of this has "Rebecca" inserted here]
Sina Baker 22 F Missouri
Elisha Baker 15 M Missouri [the 15 easily mistaken for 10]
Melvina A. Baker 9 F Arkansas
Mary A. D. Baker 6 F Arkansas
Isaac J Baker 3 M Arkansas
David Baker 1/12 M Texas" [Frank Harris reads this as 8/12]
[Frank Harris version adds this note here: "Moved from MO to AR in latter 1830's on to TX in latter 1840's Wife probably died in TX in 1849 or 50"]

Descendants of Sheppard Baker lists the following:

"Sheppard Baker. He married Sina Harris Abt. 1840 [wrong: we know they married in 1849 from marriage certificate] in est. Williamson County, TX

Children of Sheppard Baker and Sina Harris are:
i. David Sheppard Baker, b. 1845; d. June 1937 [wrong: b abt May 1850, according to 1850 census]
ii. Riley Baker, b. 1846 [can't be right; Sina married Shep 1849]
iii. Jonathan Baker, b. 1848 [can't be right]
iv. Joseph Baker, b. 1849 [can't be right]
v. Andrew Baker, b. 1851 [possible but we know David was first child in 1850]
vi. Sarah Baker, b. 1853 [possible]
vii. Martha Baker, b. 1885 [wrong: b 1869, m 1885]"

The Baker Marriages evidence repeats (is source of?) the dubious birthdates above. It also contains this entry:

"Baker, Sheppard* is male, born in Kentucky in 1799, married to Mahala Welch In 1825"

This birthdate does not agree with other evidence, and nowhere else is a third wife Mahala Welch mentioned.

The 1830 MO census listing for SHEPPARD, according to Alva M Smith:

"p 431
Shepherd Baker 1 1 0 0 1, 0 0 0 1, 0 slaves"

meaning 1M 0-5, 1M 5-10, 1M 20-30, 1F 15-20.

From Wesley Smith email, 1 May 2001:

"The first year that Shep appeared on the Carroll Co. tax records was in 1836 and was listed there thru 1847. He did not appear there in 1850 and there was no report for 1848 or 1849."

Frank Baker 1983:

"Aaron and Sheppard were born in Kentucky in 1808 and 1810 respectively. They went with John Baker to Bollinger County, MO between 1810 and 1815. Aaron married Barbara Shell ca 1827. Sheppard married Rebecca Brumley ca 1824. Aaron came to Carroll County, AR with John Jan. 3, 1833. Sheppard came before 1840, but went on to Texas between 1847 and 1849.

This information conflicts with the Williamson Co., TX deathplace in other evidence. The "Nueces country" refers to the Nueces river that flows through Vance, TX.

"Dave and Lizzie ... farmed for two or three years in the Running Brushy area -- they also had some livestock. About 1872 they moved to the Nueces River near a post office called Bullhead (now the town of Vance, Tex.)" Dave is son David Sheppard Baker.

William Riley Baker He was a sheriff in NM at the same time that Jim Gililland was on the run. Riley was murdered in Mexico where he was guarding a mine. Maude was shot in the shoulder but managed to escape with the children. She walked 20 miles to catch a train to escape.

His first wife died (in NM), then he remarried Maude Gould, sister of Jim Gililland's wife. Children Nora, Allie, Alva, and Marion were by the first wife.

Source: Alvy Smith II

A variation comes from the Faye Miller Lewis letter evidence:

"Riley remarried and he and this wife had five children: Sina, Amber, Owen, Oran and Riley.

"When Alva was about thirteen years of age they moved to El Paso where Riley was Chief of Police for five or six years. Then he took a job guarding a mine in Mexico. He moved all his family with him except Allie and Nora who were married.

"In 1908 Riley was murdered. His wife was shot in the arm and she and the children had to walk about twenty miles to the nearest station where they boarded a train and came to El Paso where Allie and her family lived." William was born. He was move in 1884 at Bakers Crossing, Val Verde, Texas, USA.2 He moved circa 1887 at New Mexico, USA.3 He married Maud Melissa Gould on 12 August 1897.4 William died in 1908 at Mexico.1,5

LUCRETIA ANN "Crishy" GILILLAND1,2,3,4

F, b. 31 October 1876, d. 11 February 1962
FatherWILLIAM FRANKLIN GILILLAND b. 19 Feb 1841, d. 13 Dec 1913
MotherROSETTA MOORE b. 26 Jan 1850, d. 17 Dec 1915
LUCRETIA ANN "Crishy" GILILLAND Lucretia Ann Gililland Smith Schindler Walker Miller. I knew her as a child as Great Grandma Miller, who fascinated me and my sister Rita by her ability to spit her chewing tobacco into a can while she was rocking and talking, without stopping either.

She had several husbands. Smith was her first; Schindler the second; Walker the third; and Miller the fourth. Walker shot himself (see "Transcription of Tape by Mae and Edith" for more details).

She would never tell us (my Aunt Lucy particularly) where Mr Smith came from - she didn't much like him it seems. She would only say cryptic things like "A lot of people changed their name to Smith when they moved west" and "Maybe your name is not Smith".

She lived in northern Arizona and was reputed to have a lot of Mormon friends. She is referred to as "Crishy'' by a granddaughter (Maurine Webb) of her sister Lucy. The granddaughter is Mormon, by the way. [See William Franklin Gililland notes.]

The following is a story related by Maurine Webb: ``Crishy got so tired of Ben coming home drunk with no money that she told him the next time he came home drunk she was going to leave him. So - the next time he was drunk Crishy sewed him up in a mattress tick, put all the kids in the wagon and set out for California. She got as far as the Gila river near Duncan, York, Franklin, Clifton, Arizona and stayed there because she had no money to go on.''

My father Alvy Smith (Ben's grandson) is delighted by this story but says it doesn't fit the facts. She was already married to Schindler when she moved to Arizona, according to him. Mrs Webb, in an older genealogical record (1979, obtained from Grace Moody) lists Crishy's marriage and death dates as 25 Mar 1892 and 4 Nov 1939. I use her more recent dates here (from 1982).

The following is a transcription of a letter from Freeda Costner (whose mother Grace was my grandfather Smith's sister) to my father April 7, 1992. It was written in response to my father's fictionalized story of Lucretia entitled "Crishy's Secret": "...I just can't let Grandma's romances go the way they were explained. "When I was about 17 yrs. old, I stayed w/ Grandma while Grandpa Miller went on some business trip - I asked her about her marriages and this is what she told me. "Grandpa Smith - She cared about him in the beginning - but after awhile they began to quarrel a lot (she didn't say what the quarrels were about - it could have been drinking like you said) but she said, 'After awhile he found another woman - so she had no choice except to divorce him.' She said Grandpa Smith had a bad temper and one time exploded at her about something and she decided no man was going to get the best of her so she took a saw and started breaking out windows - at first he was angrier but he finally began to laugh about it. She said there were a lot of windows to be broken out since it was a 2 storied house - I think this house was in Cloudcroft and a log house. "Mr. Schindler - was like the story says - according to Grandma - he only wanted to work the kids. My mother told me about Mr. Schindler as follows. It seems like he was around some before Papa left and a lot after he left. Anyway after Mama and Mr. Schindler got married, they traveled back to Texas to get some teams and wagons he owned there. Anyway as they came back to New Mexico and passed the turn off to Grandma and Grandpa Gilillands, Grandma went in to visit her parents but left the new husband and horses and wagons at the turn off. Why she did this I don't know unless she wanted to explain about the divorce and remarriage and didn't know how her parents would receive the news. "Mr Walker - Grandma called him 'the only man she truly loved'. She said she didn't know anything about him before she met him - what his background was or anything - but when he died he left her a farm in Duncan and the Quail Springs Ranch. I believe she had another farm in the Duncan area before she met him - but I believe this one was better. That is the farm Grandma gave to Uncle Albert - when she was no longer able to run both the farm and ranch. My Mother said that Grandma had an ornate iron fence put around his grave. "Grandpa Miller - Grandma said she met Grandpa (Tom Miller) when she was out riding her fence line one day. He was a game warden who had come upon some men rustling cattle and had been shot and left for dead. She took him back to the ranch house and nursed him back to health. She needed someone to help her run the ranch since it had become quite a big chore for her. He agreed to stay and work on the ranch. By mutual agreement they decided it wouldn't look good for two single people to live out on a ranch together - so by mutual agreement they decided to get married. Grandpa got a percentage of the profits, plus part of the sale price of the ranch when it was sold. Grandpa in turn gave Grandma part of the royalities from his gas wells in Oklahoma. ... Grandma and Grandpa's marriage seemed like a business arrangement to me. Grandma always called him 'Mr Miller'. The family grocery bill and utilities were divided in half and each paid half. They slept in separate bedrooms. Nevertheless, the arrangement was benificial to both. Each had their own peculiarities - besides the tobacco chewing - Grandpa read every detective book and magazine he could get his hands on - Grandma like to spin her yarns, always kept a garden, and even though she was quite well off financially, she lived very frugally. She also like to quote Ben Franklin's ________. Some of the ones I remember were - 'A penny saved is a penny earned', 'don't keep all your eggs in one basket', 'you can catch more flies with honey than vinegar', 'a whistlin woman and a crowin hen always come to some bad end', 'a stitch in time saves nine'. "Grandma Lucretia was quite a character in her own right. She knew how to make and hold on to money. She was a 'womens libber' even before there was a 'womens lib'. She told me if a woman ran for president - she would vote for her. ... In her last years she moved up to Oregon and spent her last years by her son Albert. "There will never be another woman quite like Lucretia Ann Gililland, Smith, Schindler, Walker, Miller."

Webb 1993:

"1880 U. S. Census, Kimble Co., TX, p. 2, Sup. Dist. 8, #8-10. Lists W. F. Gillland family. Lucretia is listed as a young girl.
...
Lucretia was called Crishy by the family. She and her sister Lucy were born on the same day, 2 years apart. This day was Halloween so they were known as the Halloween sisters and they were always very close. Crishy led a very hard but eventful life as did her sister Lucy. Crishy married first, Benjamin Benton Smith and their progeny have written extensively about the Smith family. Her grandson, Alvy Smith, 1109 Thornton, Clovis, N M 88101 has composed many family stories and his son, Alvy Smith, has a database on the family genealogy. Lucretia married (2) William Schindler, (3) Harlan Walker, (4) Thomas Nuton Miller. Her information in Alvy's Data Base is on pp. 19, 276." LUCRETIA was born at Kimble, Texas, USA, on 31 October 1876. Dates match but 1979 evidence gives birthplace as "Kmbll Txs" while 1982 gives "Brown Kimble Tex." [NB, 1982 evidence uses spelling "Kimble"]. 1993 evidence gives Brown Co., TX.. Lucretia told my father, Alvy (2), that she was born in Kimble Co.

Snyder: "m.30 Mar 1892 (Div)".2,3,8,9,7,10 She married Frank F Schindler at Artesia, Eddy, New Mexico, USA, on 12 March 1911.11,12 She married Harlin (Harland) Walker at Arizona, USA, after 23 December 1915. IGI gives 1915, but her mother ROSETTA's obit, dated 23 Dec 1915, lists her as Mrs Shindler.

Snyder: "Abt 1917".13,14,7 She married Thomas Newton (Nuton) Miller at Greenlee, Clifton, Greenlee, Arizona, USA, on 27 July 1926.1,15 LUCRETIA died on 11 February 1962 at Newberg Community Hospital, Newberg, Yamhill, Oregon, USA, at age 85. The Grace Moody Family Group Record gives inaccurate deathdate of 4 Nov 1939. The Maurine Webb (1982) Family Group Record gives 13 Jan 1962. I use the cemetery record and death certificate date of 11 Feb 1962.

Surprising entry on death certificate (and cemetery record): Mother's maiden name listed as Rosetta Lafayette, instead of Rosetta Moore. Father's name listed as W. F.      ALVY RAY "Ray" SMITH In 1991 I (Alvy (2) Smith) had a letter from my cousin, Freeda Moody Costner--"I also remember when your father and his 2nd wife Pearl came to Arizona to Grandma Lucretia Miller's home and were married. My father, Freeland Moody, officiated because he was an L.D.S. Bishop." I think this was in May or June 1945 as when Edith picked me up at Ft Bliss--when I came home from Europe for a brief leave, she surprised me by telling me that Dad had remarried and that Margaret and Bill were getting married in a few days.

Much of the evidence for Benjamin and Lucretia Smith's family comes from Webb 1993 which credits:
