Thomas Emery He is referred to in Sebella Alexander's will as John Alexander's nephew.

He is referred to as "my beloved Son Thomas Emery" in the will of Elizabeth Sifleet. And as "Thomas Emery Son of my Said Wife" in the will of Thomas Sifleet. He is residing at Bryan OH at the time of the probate of his mother's estate. He is residing at New York City at the time of the latest document in the Sebella Alexander estate papers, dated 24 Aug 1906.

From Arlien Sifleet's notes:

His wife was from Paulding, Ohio and either he or she died at 72 years old, buried in the Great Neck Cemetery, New York. I take it as his death.

Arlien says he is William Sifleet's half-brother, which checks. In detail, p 29- of her notes:

Lucy Lucinda Gililland Alvy (2) Smith reports in a letter dated June 9, 1990 that ``She was quite a character (see p. 194 of ``Tularosa'' by Sonnnichsen - Bob Raley was Aunt Lucy's husband) ... Aunt Lucy lived a hermit's life in a small shack in the Orogrande Mountains - with just her burros and dogs. ... The last time I saw Aunt Lucy ... she showed me a personal letter from Franklin D. Roosevelt thanking her for some ``spy'' work she had done in the desolate Orogrande Mountains [NM]. She resembled my grandmother - short, chunky, a mass of white hair, and she either smoked a pipe or chewed tobacco.'' The ``Tularosa'' reference concerns the famous Fountain murder case in New Mexico which has never been solved and for which much bitterness still exists almost a century later (see James Gililland): ``Again, when Bob Raley, Gililland's brother-in-law, was killed by Bill McNew in the fall of 1915, it was whispered that too much talk about the Fountain case had bought on hard feelings - though the actual bone of contention was a well which both sides claimed.''
--------. Lucy was born at Kimble, Texas, USA, on 31 October 1878.3,1,4,2 She married Robert Lois Raley at Jarilla, Otero, New Mexico, USA, on 11 November 1901. The 1979 evidence (family group sheet) does not give a date or place. The 1982 evidence gives 10 Nov 1901 as date. Snyder: 10 Nov 1901, no place..5,1,4,6,7 Lucy died on 12 January 1956 at El Paso, El Paso, Texas, USA, at age 77. The 1979 evidence gives deathdate of 12 Jan 1956, the 1982 gives 12 Jan 1953.      Robert Lois Raley The following is from the Alamogordo Daily News, May 10, 1990:

"Elizabeth's father was kind of like 'Little Joe the Wrangler', she said. He was an orphan and placed in an orphanage at a very early age. When he was 11 years old he ran away from the orphanage and headed west. He worked on ranches and the trail hers that spanned across Texas. "When he arrived in New Mexico as a young man, he worked on the Oliver M. Lee ranch and through his friend Jim Gilliland, he met Jim's sister Lucy. "He wasn't a very handsome man and as he and Lucy were dancing one night, he told her she was the prettiest girl he had ever seen. Lucy said, 'Well, Bob, I wish I could say the same about you.' "Bob replied, 'Now, Lucy, you could if you would lie like I did.'"

The following is from a letter, about Bob Raley's murder, from Maurine Webb to my Father [Alvy Smith (2)], dated 18 Jul 1990:

"In Orogrande [NM], in 1915, there was only one telephone. Bob & Lucy Raley and 7 children lived about 3 miles from this telephone. They lived in Lucky Flat and the phone was installed in the Calthorp home near the R.R. depot.

A messenger brought word to Bob that his lawyer from Alamo[gordo] was going to call him on the telephone at about noon so Bob hitched up the buggy, because Lucy insisted on going with him, and left home for the Calthorp house.

He parked the buggy in front of the house, helped Lucy out, she was pregnant, opened the fence gate to go in & was shot by a rifle over the left eye. Another shot, intended for Lucy, missed both ... because Lucy grabbed Bob & fell with him or she would have been killed also. Bill McNew was lying on the floor aiming the rifle out the front door, his son George, who lives in Las Cruces, wrote a letter describing these events.

Somehow the screen door with 2 bullet hole punches ended up on Lucy's screened in porch and she often pointed to them saying 'this one was Bob's and this one was mine.' The door was turned upside down when it was put on the porch so the patches were near the top. "Grandmother Lucy said Bob's blood stained the street in front of Calthorps for years."

My father Alvy Smith [96] says in a letter dated 19 Jul 1990 the following about the story above:

"Maurine's version was closer to what I have heard. Dad and Mom lived in an old house in Orogrande, not far from the RR depot. There were bullet holes in the door - and Dad said they were made when Bill McNew shot Bob Raley. Re: George McNew - Maurine's ltr. He was rough ranch boy - brought up at Orogrande. Went to NMSU (NM A&M) - straight A student in biology - PhD from Iowa State - For many years either Pres or Dean at Cornell - finished out his career as Director of a think tank in NY - has retired to Las Cruces. Perry McNew - Grandson of Bill McNew, George's nephew - was my roommate at NMSU for awhile."

----His father: Samuel G.B.Raley, born 1829: His mother: Mary Ann Lemons

The following is from Josh Crook of Socorro, NM:

"In case you didn't know, the reason that some locality records are listed as "Jarilla, NM" and others "Orogrande" reflects the time periods. Originally, the district was known as Silver Hill or the Jarilla District for the Jarilla Mountains where the area is located. In June, 1904, a 6.5 ounce gold nugget was found on one of the gold placer
claims. Later, a newspaper man dubbed the discovery oro grande (big gold in Spanish)--see the article in New Mexico Magazine, v. 42, #3, p. 2-5 (1964). Eventually, the name Orogrande stuck. In other words, the record of those who were born or died in that area before about 1905-6 would have lived in Jarilla. Whereas, later, the identical area was called Orogrande. When Fayette Jones (professor and, by then, former president) of the NM School of Mines described the district in July 1904, it was still called Jarilla (Silver Hill). However, the records that I have seen from several mining companies of 1906-1907 call it Orogrande. The first time the name Orogrande was used in the El Paso Herald (from the information that I have) was September 12, 1906.

Bob and Lucy Raley who lived in Lucky Flat lived about 4 miles NW of the present town of Orogrande. According to some of the old records (WWII era--Lawson Entwisle's geologic map of the area) Lucky Flat was located just north of the May and Lucky mines. The Lucky Mine was one of the more well-known mines in the district. The site of Lucky Flat is in the central and southernmost 40 acres of Sec 3, T 22S, R8E, NMPM (see Orogrande North topo sheet--The Lucky is incorrectly called the Garnet Mine on this map). Today, there is little more than rusty garbage in that area. My senior thesis area was on a mining claim about 1/4 mile NW of the Lucky Flat site."
Robert was born at Jasper, Jasper, Texas, USA, on 9 October 1870.3 He married Lucy Lucinda Gililland at Jarilla, Otero, New Mexico, USA, on 11 November 1901. The 1979 evidence (family group sheet) does not give a date or place. The 1982 evidence gives 10 Nov 1901 as date. Snyder: 10 Nov 1901, no place..4,5,6,7,8 Robert died on 23 September 1915 at Orogrande, Otero, New Mexico, USA, at age 44. Snyder gives 3 Sep 1915, NM.9,10 His body was interred on 24 September 1915 at Orogrande, Otero, New Mexico, USA.1

Elizabeth Eva Raley She was my father's [Alvy (2)] elementary school teacher in Mayhill, NM. The following is from an interview with her and her husband Loyd published in the Alamogordo Daily News, 10 May 1990: "On the day Elizabeth decided to make her appearance, there was a terrible dust storm. There was so much dust in the air that her father couldn't find the horses to take his wife to the doctor. After a long search he found them and took Lucy to Orogrande, but the doctor had gone to El Paso. They decided to go to Alamogordo on the train, which arrived late at midnight. The railroad tracks were covered with sand and the train could get no traction and the workmen had to stop and clear the tracks every few miles. The train finally arrived in Alamogordo just as the sun was making its appearance and so did Elizabeth." (Elizabeth was 11 when her father was murdered. See his entry.)
