SARAH TAFFENDEN1
F, d. after 5 September 1858
She married THOMAS BLOMLEY at England. SARAH was born at England. She The evidence letters offer weak evidence of several children. One of the problems with the evidence is that the writer, James Hargreaves, nearly always refers to Mrs. Bromley, rather than Blomley. So first, I establish that these are the same person.
Letter of 3 May 1857: "There was present at the funeral Mrs Bromley your mother-in-law she looked very poorly." But Henry (recipient] has Blomley as his mother-in-law's surname. The letter continues, "She feels the weight of affliction for Catherine lay very poorly not likely for recovering. She has been recently confined of her third child. Charlotte was at the funeral and Hannah they both seem well. Hannah especially looks fresh and healthy but Charlotte looks more old maidish than I could have thought. William and his daughter Jane she is called. She is a fine young woman with auburn hair. Thomas and his wife and Roger. Your mother is quite set on for Australia." So, using the author's penchant for listing kin in contiguous sentences, I believe this makes Charlotte, Hannah, William, Thomas, and Roger additional Blomleys.
Also, the letter of 24 Jun 1852 has, "I have not seen Mrs Bromley I think as a good many years, but I intend going over to Bury [where Henry and Susannah were married] before long. I saw Rodger a few weeks since, he is a very sprightly good looking young man. Sharlotte & Hannah I cannot say how they are, only I think James said Hannah was much better situated since her husband died [could this be Henry's brother-in-law James Blomley mentioned in The Letter? Probably.] Thomas I think has a share in some Powerlooms which are just behind our house."
Letter of 24 Jun 1854: "I do not know how Thos Blomley is going on his partnership concern, but the looms have kept running during the few months of bad trade we have had."
The letter of Dec 1857: "I am glad to hear that Mrs Bromley and the rest of the Family are well and doing well. Now she has had toil hard to bring up a large Family, but now in the down hill of life is there one of her Sons or Daughter that would see her suffer from want or neglect? not one I believe."
Letter of 5 Sep 1858: "Mrs Blomley and the rest of the Family have arrived safe and hope they may find a comfortable settlement among you." This means that Sarah Blomley and some of her children immigrated to Australia by 5 Sep 1858. It is probably safe to assume James is one of these. SARAH immigrated, before 5 September 1858. Destination: (an unknown value). See main text for her.. SARAH died after 5 September 1858 at Australia. See main text for her..

HENRY WILLIAM HARGREAVES See "Letter by My Great Great Grandfather Henry Hargreaves (1811-1899) from Australia to England in 1870 Summarizing His Life in Australia for His Nephew" for a letter.
Calling: Joiner. Religion: Protestant. Remarks: Reads and writes. Age on embarkation: 29. Source: Entitlement Certificates, Passengers by the Ship "Champion" 1840. Arrived in Australia: October 29, 1840. (The ship arrived 5 Oct 1840 and was quarantined at Sydney's North Head until 24 Oct 1840. The family left the ship on 29 Oct 1840). This all appears as notes on the Henry Wm Hargreaves Family Group Record evidence.
Christened: May 12, 1811, Padiham, Lancashire, England. Full marriage place: St. Mary, Bury, Lancashire. Full death place: Mundongo near Tumut, New South Wales (from death certificate). Buried: July 19, 1899, Pioneers Cemetery, Tumut, New South Wales. Source: Barry Hargreaves family tree (see Henry Wm Hargreaves Family Group Record).
Also from the death certificate are marriage details: He married at 21 years of age to Susannah Blomley in Lancashire England. This would make the marriage date about 1832, which doesn't jibe. More trustworthy are the details from the Henry Wm Hargreaves Family Group Record.
Two children named John. The first John was the third child, born October 2, 1835, Haslingden, Lancashire, England, who died as infant. There is a death certificate for Henry in Sydney. Padiham, Burnley, Bury, and Haslingden (all towns associated with Henry or his children or siblings) are all within thirty miles of one another just north of Manchester. Bury is now in the county Greater Manchester.
Marriage place source: Colin Hargreaves letter of December 5, 1986. Colin discovered (told me in Kenedy Texas, 4/88) that the John Hay of The Letter (see above) became Speaker of the Legislative Council of NSW and was later knighted by Queen Victoria as Sir John Hay.
I obtained a birth certificate for Henry's son Israel Hargreaves at St. Catherines House in London Mar 1989. Henry's profession is recorded on it as an overlooker. This is a manager in a cotton mill, with the added meaning that he was familiar enough with the equipment (from having worked for years on it) to make repairs. So an overlooker (cf. overseer) is a combination foreman and engineer who has worked his way up to his position in the mill. His job was to keep his machines running and his weavers weaving. I learned this from a slim book called ``Life in the Lancashire Mill Towns'' by W. R. Mitchell, given to me by a friend from Preston, Lancashire. Interestingly, the cover of this book is a painting of a mill town with a delivery wagon emblazoned with the name Hargreaves.
The only other note I've seen of Henry's profession came from his embarkation papers where he is listed as a joiner, which I understand to be a carpenter or cabinetmaker. I don't understand this conflict, unless it was judicious of Henry to be a joiner in order to emigrate to Australia - there not being many cotton mills in New South Wales in 1840.
Since I frequently get asked if Henry was transported to Australia as a criminal, it is worth pointing out that transportation officially ended (to New South Wales) in 1840. At the same time England began to encourage emigration to Australia by a bounty plan (similar to US homesteading plan). We know from Henry's letter that he was not a criminal but that his family had to camp with criminals during their first year in Australia. According to "The Fatal Shore" by Robert Hughes (Alfred A. Knopf, New York, 1987) the bounty plan quickly attracted 18,000 free emigrants and 40,000 others emigrated by their own accord. Henry and his family were probably part of this latter group.
From the Hargreaves Book evidence, p 2:
"In this situation the government of hte day under Governor Gipps established a bounty for free immigrants to encourage migration. This bounty introduced in 1837, whereby a migrant couple fit for work and under the age of 30 received L30 with L5 for each child, enabled 18,000 people to come to NSW by 1840, must surely have been the final stimulus for Henry, who was 29, Susannah his wife 27, with their three children, Richard 8, Sarah 6 and Israel 3 - and a baby who died at sea on the voyage - to decide to begin a new life in a new land. It should be noted that gold had not as yet been discovered in commercial qauantities in Australia, and therefore would not, as sometimes has been mentioned, have taken any part in his decision."
As detail in The Letter, Henry worked for Mr John Hay for the first 18 months in Australia. Again, from the Hargreaves Book:
"Although he stayed with him for only eighteen months, he retained an association with him for many years. In 1859 they were both signatories on a petition of nine from the Adelong Electoral Committee ... [document reproduced in book]. John Hay himself became a Member of Parliament in 1856, serving the state as Secretary of Lands and Works for his first two years and remaining a Member of the Legislative Council from then until 1894, being Speaker for a period and being knighted by the Queen." HENRY was born at Padiham, Lancashire, England, on 24 April 1811.6 He was christened at Padiham, Lancashire, England, on 12 May 1811. He married SUSANNAH BLOMLEY at St Mary, Bury, Lancashire, England, on 17 October 1830. The John Hargreaves death certificate lists his parents as Henry Hargreaves, Gold Miner, and Susannah Blomley.
The Israel Hargreaves birth certificate lists his parents as Henry Hargreaves and Susannah Hargreaves, formerly Blomley..4,2,7,8 He emigrated, on 8 May 1840. Point of origin: Liverpool, England.9 HENRY immigrated, on 5 October 1840. Destination: Sydney, Australia. HENRY died on 18 July 1899 at Mundongo, Tumut, New South Wales, Australia, at age 88.2,10,11 His body was interred on 19 July 1899 at Tumut, New South Wales, Australia, at Pioneers Cemetery.10,12

SARAH HARGREAVES Birthplace in Barry Hargreaves' family tree given variously as Whalley, Lancashire and Whalley, Burnley, Lancashire. Both are correct. Whalley is a village outside Burnley in Lancashire. Birthdate given as January 8, 1834, in notes taken by Alvy and Edith Smith on visit to Australia in 1986. She and her family left Australia for the USA in 1873 (source: family tree diagram by Colin Hargreaves, 1989). The 8 Jun 1834 birthdate from the LDS family group sheet is suspect.
See husband WILLIAM's text for memorial plaque text. SARAH was born at Whalley, Lancashire, England, on 8 June 1834.2,4,3 She emigrated, on 8 May 1840. Point of origin: Liverpool, England. With her parents at age 6. See her father's emigration evidence.. SARAH immigrated, on 29 October 1840. Destination: (an unknown value). At age 6 with her parents. Israel Hargreaves A letter from Colin Hargreaves (dated 5 Dec 1986) gives details obtained in a letter to him from Mabel Hargreaves Taylor: Marriage of Israel and Selina was at Tumut; first six children were born in Australia, last two in USA.
Note added 10 May 1987: Alvy and Edith Smith just returned from the Hargreaves family reunion in Kenedy, TX. They visited the Runge, TX, cemetery and obtained Israel's death date and confirmed his birth date from his tombstone. His name is misspelled ``Iseral'' on the tombstone. Apparently, all references to San Antonio are actually to Runge.
From "Hargreaves, Sanders, & Williamsons", by Mabel Hargreaves Taylor, 1980 (for Menard County History, Anchor Publishing Co., 221 N. Main, San Angelo, TX 76901):
"On January 14, 1876, the Isreal [sic] Hargreaves family left Sidney and headed for America on board the ship "City of San Francisco", this being its maiden voyage. On the return voyage, it was shipwrecked by a tidal wave off the southern coast of South America. The voyage took the Hargreaves from Sidney to the Fiji Islands (Mackado), Honolulu, Hawaii, and to San Francisco, from where they took a Prairie schooner to Georgetown, Texas." [See correction to the ship story below.]
I don't know where Mackado is. The closest name to it I can find on a map of Fiji is Malolo, an island off the west coast of the main Fiji island.
Israel's newpaper obituary (in Ophelia Fink's possession) has the following points: He died in his 71st year. He was resident of Texas for 33 years. He went to Australia at 3 years of age. He married in 1861. He sold his farm and mercantile business 12/1875. He arrived in Williamson County, Texas, about 3/1/1876. "He and his family visited a sister [Sarah] who had also come from Australia and was living where Taylor now is. From there he took his family to Georgetown to remain until he could look around for a home. When he returned he had bought a home in Karnes County to which he moved his family in September, 1876, and where he made his home for more than thirty years.''
Colin Hargreaves (related in Kenedy, TX, 4/21/88) has weak evidence that Israel was instrumental in capturing ``Jack in Boots'' (Jack Mallory), famous Australian bushranger. His (tongue in cheek) theory is that Jack's release from prison was coincident with Israel's sudden decision to emigrate to Texas.
On two tax records from Karnes County, Texas, for Israel Hargreaves' land (in Ophelia Fink's possession): Under Lands, Original Grantee is handwritten "Pedro Trevino [spelled Trevina on the second one]'' and under Acres is handwritten "814''.
I obtained Israel's birth certificate at St Catherines House in London in Feb-Mar 1989. It gives his birth place as Burnley Lane, Burnley, County of Lancaster.
Correction to the Ship Champion story, from Chip Hoins, 5 Aug 2007:
"You are correct that the return sailing from Sydney was the 'maiden voyage' of that ship. It was actually the return run as the maiden voyage began in San Francisco and was the inauguration of regular sailings by Pacific Mail Steamship Company from San Francisco to Sydney and return. The ship had been built in Philadelphia and had made the initial trip from Philadelphia to San Francisco prior to the 'maiden voyage'.
The Captain of the "City of San Francisco" was actually a senior official of the company and was asked to make the maiden voyage because of his earlier connection to shipping in Australia and strong family connections there - in other words, for political purposes. His name was John McLachlan (aka John M Lachlan) who was born in Tobermory, Scotland in 1828. He was my grt. grandfather.
The "City of San Francisco" - under command of another well known and respected captain did not suffer a tidal wave off South America but struck a previously uncharted reef off the coast of Mexico not too long afterwards. The captain had made the run many times before and claimed he had been in exactly the same spot as the grounding on prior voyages. An investigation - with soundings and divers - determined that the "reef" was in fact a new one having been lifted up from the sea floor as a result of an earthquake. No lives were lost in the accident and the captain was fully exonerated. Some time later an oyster farmer from Yaquina, Oregon recovered $23,000. in gold from the wreck." Israel was born at Burnley, Lancashire, England, on 6 September 1837.2,3,4 He emigrated, on 8 May 1840. Point of origin: Liverpool, England. See father's evidence. Israel immigrated, on 29 October 1840. Destination: (an unknown value). See father's evidence. He married Selina Davis at Tumut, New South Wales, Australia, on 24 April 1861.5 He moved in 1869 at Tooma, New South Wales, Australia.6 He emigrated, on 14 January 1876. Point of origin: Sydney, Australia.7,8 Israel immigrated, on 14 February 1876. Destination: Texas.7,9 Israel died on 27 February 1908 at Runge, Karnes, Texas, USA, at age 70. They came by the ship City of San Francisco leaving Sydney on January 14 and sailing via Fiji and the Sandwich Isles. At Fiji, as noted in Selina's diary by Sydney Callaway, 'we would toss coins into the crystal clear water, and watch the naked natives dive and retrieve the coins. At the Hawaiian Islands, the Queen appeared briefly to welcome to passengers on board the boat. During the stopover Israel climbed a tall cocoanut tree to pick a cocoanut. It was fun watching the natives shin up the trees in no time at all. Landing in San Francisco, how the people stared! They were amazed at our Australian accent and our picturesque manner of dress."

I recall my grandfather Henry Edwin H. saying, 'We crossed the waters in a sailing ship and came across the plains in a prairie schooner.' He was about ten years old at the time.
"Accounts given by several descendants differ about this journey, but it seems a fact that they travelled by train to Round Rock, the terminus of the line, where they pruchased three covered waggons and travelled on to Georgetown, Texas.

John Hargreaves Third of three brothers named John (the first two died in infancy). His death certificate states that he was born in Bendigo, Victoria. Birthplace given as Murray in notes from Alvy and Edith Smith, recorded on trip to Australia, 1986. And I have two spellings of his birthplace: Welaregang and Wallerawang. I have found the second place on the map of NSW, near Lithgow, which has nothing to do with either Bendigo or the Murray. Obviously some cleaning up of details is required here.
Calling: Farmer and grazier. Full death place: 14 Carlton Crescent, Summer Hill, Sydney, NSW. Buried: Field of Mars, Lane Cove, Sydney (Church of England), November 20, 1923. A great many of the details of John and his descendants is based on her information. I will refer to it as the Anne Shipp family tree. Tarrabandra is listed as the birthplace of many of John's children. This was his family property outside of Tumut. The birth place of William and Elizabeth is given is Sharpe's Creek, near Adelong.
The LDS Family Group Record evidence lists birthplace as Walleragang, Upper Murray, NSW, Australia. This is now listed as his birthplace. John was born at Upper Murray, Walleragang, New South Wales, Australia, on 11 November 1841.2 He was christened at Yass, New South Wales, Australia, on 17 March 1844.2 He married Catherine Capel at Adelong, New South Wales, Australia, on 10 March 1864.3 John died on 18 November 1923 at Summerhill, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, at age 82.4,2 His body was interred on 20 November 1923 at Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, at Field of Mars, Lane Cove.2

WILLIAM MARION "Will" SANDERS History of NM v3, pp 31 [There are known errors in the following. See Jefferson Jackson Sanders for full text]:
"... His father was a gold miner in that region. William M. Sanders, his father, was born in the United States, became a British citizien in Australia, and subsequently resumed his American citizenship rights by naturalization. A native of Tennessee, he left there at the age of eighteen, and for a time was a plantation overseer at Bastrop, Texas. After the discovery of gold in California he started west, crossing old Mexico to Matzatlan in Lower California, where he took a vessel for San Francisco. He did most of his prospecting as a placer miner in the vicinity of Stockton, California. Some of his companions there were Hogan, Cassidy and Burdette, and after some months in California they all started for Australia. William M. Sanders worked in the Australian mines for several years, and then engaged in farming and ranching. He married in Australia Miss Sarah Hargraves, who was born near the City of London, and accompanied her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hargraves, to Australia, where the family became farmers and ranchers, and her parents lived out their lives near Tumut.
"When Jefferson J. Sanders was still a small child his parents left Australia, embarking on the ship British Commodore, under command of Captain Rands, and after a voyage of fourteen weeks crossed the Pacific to San Francisco. From San Francisco they went east to Denver, then a mere village, and from there to Tennessee, the native state of William M. Sanders. His wife and children remained two years in Giles County while he went to Texas, settling in Menard County, where his family joined him later. They all remained in Menard County until 1892 , when they came into New Mexico, settling in Otero County. William M. Sanders after that lived retired until his death in 1896 at the age of seventy years. His wife died the previous year, at the age of sixty-five. She was a member of the Episcopal Church. Their children were: Elizabeth, who died at Albuquerque, New Mexico, in 1887, the wife of William Bruce; Alice, who married John Williamson in Giles County, Tennessee, and died at Roswell, New Mexico, in 1891; William, who died in Menard County at the age of twenty-four; and Jefferson J.
Elizabeth Witt White of Pulaski, Tennessee, contacted Alvy and Edith Smith, my parents, in June 1989 with the information about Will's parents and siblings. In her letter [including Bellenfant Family evidence] outlining the family as then understood, she says of Will (Bill, by her account): "Shown with parents in the Giles Co., Tn. 1850 census. Said to have gone to Australia in 1850 and married a Miss Hargreaves, an English girl there. 6 children. Bill died in Australia and was buried there. Names and dates of children unknown.'' Her estimate of his birth was 1829 [because 1850 census lists him as age 21].
Added 2/8/97: His naturalization papers of 1864 give his age as 36 which makes his birth year 1827 or 1828.

"In Memory of
William M. Sanders
1826-1903
Sarah Hargreaves Sanders
1834-1895
Settled Tularosa 1892"
This was erected by my parents 4 Jan 1988 in the Sanders plot of the cemetery. The actual graves of WILLIAM and SARAH are known to be in the cemetery or just outside its present walls, but the actual locations are unknown. According to my father, SARAH was buried on the family property at her death, but she was disinterred and moved to the cemetery when WILLIAM died. There graves were marked with a simple wooden cross awaiting a more permanent marker which never materialized (hence this plaque). They are thought to be just outside the western wall of the cemetery or just across the street from it.
From my father: Alvy Smith Letter, 10 Jan 1988:
"We went to Tularosa last Monday and set the stone Mom wanted in memory of her grandparents - We don't know just where they were buried - but best remembrances (Mae - and MaMc) was near west fence of cemetery - directly behind SANDERS stele." WILLIAM was born at Bodenham, Giles, Tennessee, USA, in 1828. 1828 or 1829. He was 21 in 1850 Census, implies Apr 1850(?). He was 36 in naturalization papers filed Feb 1864. One of these doesn't quite work. Since I don't know exactly when the 1850 Census was counted, I'll use the naturalization evidence, implying he was born Jan or Feb 1828. This would make him 22 in 1850 UNLESS the census was counted say on Jan 1 1850 just before his birthday.
The plaque erected by my parents gives 1826 as his birthdate.

Andrew Laurie Reid The information given is due to Colin Hargreaves (letter to Alvy Ray Smith (3), 5 Dec 1986) who obtained it from the Registrar of Births, Deaths, and Marriages (in Sydney, presumably) "after about five searches". The facts listed differ from those obtained from other sources: Mae Sanders (Parker) remembers his middle name as William.
Alvy and Edith Smith visited Pat Rodgers (Andrew's granddaughter) in 1986. She has a copy of his death certificate. Colin's letter mentions that Andrew's death certificate shows his second wife as Jane Curl. Colin says: "I'm sure this is a mistake. Mrs. Rita McGrath who remembers him when she was young tells me he married a Mrs. Marvell. I confirmed this in a microfiche list of marriages in 1890."
I have now seen the death certificate, courtesy of Pat Rodgers. It gives his death as 10 Aug 1921, age 85, implying b c 1836. It gives his father as James Reid, carpenter, and his mother as Alice Laurie. It gives his own profession as "Carrier and Farmer". His death place is "State Hospital Liverpool NSWales, Municipality of Liverpool". This is elsewhere referred to as the Liverpool Asylum (as in the "informant" field of the certificate). He was buried 11 Aug 1921, Methodist Cemetery, Liverpool. He was born in Hobart, Tasmania, and had been in NSW 69 years (ie since ~1852). He had married (1) Jane Hargreaves at 34 years of age (~1870) in Adelong, NSW and married (2) Jane Curl at 54 years of age (~1890) in Tumut, NSW. He had "Andrew 38 years, Laurie 36 years Living and 1 male deceased by 1st marriage, John 30 years Living and none deceased by 2nd marriage".
This exactly contradicts Colin's info on the second marriage, but the child John matches. The children for the first marriage are a bit of a puzzle, since no daughter is mentioned at all. Andrew's birth of c 1883 does not match the date we believe we have for him of 1880 and clashes with the 1883 birth of Louis Reid of which we are certain. "Laurie" b c 1885 does not match the other known son, Henry Laurie b 1876 nor Louis b 1883.
Pat Rodgers (granddaughter of Andrew Laurie Reid) letter, 30 Mar 2002:
"The best I can come up with is Andrew Laurie Reid's death certificate. This state that he died at 85 years in 1921 which puts his birth date in 1836. This fits in between Margaret Reid born 1835 and Robert Brown Reid in 1838.
My father, Louis, told me that his father, Andrew, had a sister who married into a well-to-do family. I guess this fits his sister if it is Margaret.
The marriage certificate of Jane and Andrew states that he was a carver [carrier?]. They were married Feb. 7, 1869." Andrew was born at Hobart, Tasmania, Australia, circa 1836.2 He moved circa 1852 at New South Wales, Australia.2 He married Jane Hargreaves at Adelong, New South Wales, Australia, on 7 February 1869. Death certificate says he was 34 at this marriage, implying c 1870.2,4 He married ?Jane Curl at Tumut, New South Wales, Australia, circa 1890. But Colin Hargreaves is convinced she was not Jane Curl but Penelope McGrath /Marvell/.2 Andrew died on 10 August 1921 at State Hospital (Asylum), Liverpool, New South Wales, Australia.2 His body was interred on 11 August 1921 at Liverpool, New South Wales, Australia, at Methodist Cemetery.2
John T Beale Hargreaves book, p92:
"John had been born at Salisbury in Wiltshire, England, in 1841, where his father was a chemist. He became an apprentice in the mercantile marine business after spending a few years in brushmaking. He came to Australia aged eighteen, and tired of the life of a seafarer, he gained some experience of colonial life on a station in New England. He visited goldfields in Yass and Lambing Flat (Young), but ceased his wandering in 1862, and settled in Tumut. Here he engaged in dealing and carrying.
... In 1876 ... John Beale purchased the home farm at Mundongo belonging to his father-in-law, Henry. Whether it was an investment, or whether he intended to farm it himself we do not know, but in 1878 he established a brewery in what is now Howick Street in Tumut. It was only a small plant, but his brew became acknowledged "as good as any in the colony"." John was born at Salisbury, Wiltshire, England, in 1841.2 John immigrated, circa 1859. Eliza Mary Webb Christened: Sutton Forest, Camden, NSW, March 21, 1852. Buried: Tumut, NSW. Source: Barry Hargreaves family tree.
The deathplace was changed from Tumut to Tumut Plains from information supplied by Jim Waddell [61] in a letter to me from Colin Hargreaves dated December 5, 1986 (Jim's note was included in the letter). Eliza was born at Wagga Wagga, New South Wales, Australia, on 9 September 1851.1 She was christened at Sutton Forest, Camden, New South Wales, Australia, on 21 March 1852. Sutton Forest, Camden, NSW is a puzzle. There is both a Sutton Forest, NSW, and a Camden, NSW, but in different places and both are quite far from Wagga Wagga, NSW.
Added 23 Feb 2002:
An email from glenice57@aol.com explains that Suttons Forest is a place and Camden is a municipality. At that time Camden municipality stretched from where Camden is now (on the edge of Sydney) to the northern side of the Shoalhaven river at Nowra. NSW at that time was divided into a dozen or two municipalities..2 She married James Hargreaves at Bombowlee, west of Tumut, Tumut, New South Wales, Australia, on 3 September 1873.1 Eliza died on 11 November 1933 at Tumut, New South Wales, Australia, at age 82. Her body was interred after 11 November 1933 at Tumut, New South Wales, Australia.2

William Henry Callaway (3) In a photograph of a what appears to be an obituary, in my possession:
"William Henry Callaway was born in Pulaski, Tennessee, on October 25, 1850. His father died when he was a young child, and the early years of his life, accordingly, were spent at the home of his uncle, the Hon. James Sanders, of Pulaski. Mr. Sanders was a famous Tennessee legistalor and a man of great ability and importance.... When he reached the age at which he decided to enter upon his independent life, Mr. Callaway made his way westward to a ranch near Roswell, New Mexico, working there as a youth and young man. Later he came to Texas, and in Goliad County, near Charco, acquired a farm, and commence the business of farming"
This is particularly interesting because James Sanders is the brother of William Marion Sanders, my (Alvy Ray Smith (3)) great grandfather. Will Sanders married Sarah Hargreaves. Her brother Israel Hargreaves became William Callaway's father-in-law when he married Israel's daughter Jane Hargreaves.
From Hargreaves Book pp 50-51:
"William Callaway came from Tennessee. He was orphaed as a young child and spent his early years with his uncle the Hon. James Sanders, a highly respected Tennessee legislator. Will Sanders, who married Sarah Hargreaves, Israel's sister, also came from Tennessee, so there could well have been some family connection there. [There is]
When he reached the age of independence he made his way westward to a ranch near Roswell, New Mexico, working there as a youth and young man. He married Jane Hargreaves in December 1882, when he was 32 and she was 20 years of age.
During the first year of their marriage he ran a first class hotel at San Pedro in New Mexico where there was a rich mining camp, doing 'splendid business'. Jane, in a letter to her grandparents in Australia, dated March 23, 1884, tells them of the bad luck Will had had at this venture. A dispute arose between the two companies running the mine which could not be resolved, so work was suspended. The mine closed down and the business at the hotel fell away. Will had to sell at a heavy loss, and leave the place still owed much money by miners who had also departed. Jane and Will rented a place at Mission Valley where they could pasture their 40 head of cattle and several horses, until they were able to move to their block of land at Charco, Goliad County. Jane's father had provided each of the family as they reached their majority with part of his property of some 1,500 to 2,000 acres, and it was on this as a beginning that Jane and William commenced to farm."

He [William H Callaway] was orphaned and reared by Uncle James C. Sanders, wagoner. His father's and mother's ages were listed as 33 and 26 in the 1850 census. He is listed in the James Parks family as 8 yrs old in the 1860 Giles Co census (see his mother MInerva Sanders). William was born at Pulaski, Giles, Tennessee, USA, on 25 October 1850. He married Jane Hargreaves at "Woodlands", Karnes, Texas, USA, on 12 December 1882.4 William died on 18 July 1905 at Runge, Karnes, Texas, USA, at age 54.

Louis James "Louie" Reid See "Transcription of Tape by Mae and Edith" for more details. Mae Sanders (Parker) gives 1882 as his birth date. The information recorded here came from a visit of Alvy and Edith Smith with Pat Rodgers (daughter of Louie Reid) in September, 1986. One change in particular due to this visit was of the middle name from Henry to James. I (Alvy Ray Smith (3)) had obtained Henry from another source which I take as less reliable than this. Louie's mother died when he was 19 months old. Will and Sarah Sanders brought him to America when he was 3 years old (thus about 1886).
From the Mae Sanders (Parker) letter of 15 Jul 1972:
"Will and Sarah Sanders came to America bringing four children. Two girls, Alice and Lizzie and two younger boys, Jeff and Will. (Jeff the youngest - 10 yrs - year about 1873) They went to Tennessee for a time then to Texas. Somewhere in here Will and Sarah Sanders went back to Australia on a visit to find Jane and Andrew Wm [sic] Reid had both passed away ... leaving two boys (Andrew and Louie) They brought Louie back with them to America to raise. No knowledge of what became of Andrew."
Note that Andrew Reid had NOT died however, so there is some confusion about what really happened here. It is clear, however, that Louie Reid came to the US with Will and Sarah and was raised by them. Louis was born at Bomboulee, New South Wales, Australia, on 28 June 1883. Louis became a foster child at Tularosa, Otero, New Mexico, USA, circa 1886.1 He married Lydia Alice Sheppard on 22 February 1922. Louis died on 27 April 1966 at El Paso, El Paso, Texas, USA, at age 82.
