JEAN "John" BELLENFANT1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8

M, d. before May 1802
JEAN "John" BELLENFANT He was a native of France. There are quite a few variations on the spelling of the last name, including Belenfant, Belanfant, Belaufant, etc. A memo from Linda C Vernon of Stoneville, NC, dated 23 Aug 1990 states the following:

From Linda Vernon letter of 23 Aug 1990:

"It appears to me [from deed records] that John Bellenfant was living in Halifax Co. Va, from at least Aug 1787 until his move to Rockingham Co, NC after 10 Feb 1791. His deed in Rockingham Co. is dated 15 Feb 1792 when he purchased 310 acres on (Dan) River bank from Wm Johnson & wife Sarah [qv]. He sold this tract in Oct of 1798 to Vincent Vass, Jr. of Person Co. NC. John Bellenfant had died by May 1802 if not earlier as guardians are appointed for his children that year. I am not sure if the family appears on the 1800 Rockingham Co census which I am recording at this time. There is some evidence that John married a second time to Salley Ray. She is mentioned in the will of her father, James Ray, in May of 1806. One of the witnesses was Vincent Vass, the man who purchased the tract of land from John Bellenfant in 1798. She left a will in Rockingham Co dated 20 May 1860, naming Ray family members. Her age is given as 82 on the R. Co 1850 census."

He was in the Revolutinary War (Source: Bellenfant family Bible].
From a page entitled "The Bellenfant Family (Bellefont, Bellenfaute, Ballanfant)" by Mrs. J.A.Wilkinson, 104 Bishop St, Booneville, Mississippi 38829, Mar. 1981:

"John Bellenfant, French soldier, was said to have come to this country with Marquis de LaFayette in 1777 and served in the American Revolution with him. One story is that John was a sailor on the ship that brought LaFayette to America and perhaps served in the Navy during the war. (So far, none of the collaborators in this project have discovered any 'official' record of his service--only references in county histories, in the Bellenfant Bible, and by family tradition.) After the war was over, John (or Jean) decided to stay in America and settled in Virginia--some have said in Petersburg, others have said Fairfax County. Soon after the war, perhaps 1784/5, he was married to Louisa (Lucy) Yeomans (or Emmons) of Virginia, presumably the daughter of Drewry (Drury) Yeomans, Sr as her seven children shared, as legatees, in his estate. (Court Minutes, Rockingham Co., NC, Nov. Term, 1804, p.25; May term, 1805, p.57,60; also from papers in John Bellenfant estate file at N.C. State Archives, Raleigh, NC in the Rockingham Co. estates files arranged alphabetically.)"

From the Bob Carter letter:

"You said the wife's name was ... Yeoman. Now this makes sense as the Yeoman family owned land in "the Bent" of Dan River about two miles below the Bellenfant land."

Also: "He probably died young as I remember seeing in the court minutes that his children were bound out to other people. Maybe I can find my notes about this some time soon."

From Bellenfant Bible: "His [John Bellenfant's] grandparents were all in the Revolutionary War."

Johnson Bible: "Polly Ballanfant, eldest daughter of John, a native of France, & Lucy"

Bellenfant-Sanders Letters:

"My uncle Joe Ballanfant, who is now dead, said the original name was spelled Bellenfaute - I am telling you this, so if you run up on that name, they are the same. My grandfather, John Ballanfant was an only child of Joseph and Sallie Turner Ballanfant, and Joseph's father's name was John, and he was in the Rev. War, and married the Yoeman, and settled in Petersburg, [Va.?] after that war, but was buried in Rockingham, N.C. They had a number of children, among whom were twin girls, and one of those twins was the ancestor of Mrs. Field Gordon, who was Florence Scott of Maury County - she lives at 2308 Dixie Place, Nashville, and may be able to tell you something about it. It is my understanding that the Ballanfant, who possible came over with LaFayette, was a sailor on the ship and whether it was this first John, I can't know. But the family the sailor married into wasn't so proud of the fact, they didn't know who he was, or anything about his family (sounds snooty doesn't it)"

Bellenfant Family:

"John Bellenfant, French soldier, was said to have come to this country with Marquis de LaFayette in 1777 and served in the American Revolution with him. One story is that John was a sailor on the ship that brought LaFayette to America and perhaps served in the Navy during the war. (So far, none of the colaborators in this project have discovered any "official" record of his service - only references in county histories, in the Bellenfant Bible, and by family tradition.) After the war was over, John (or Jean) decided to stay in America and settled in Virginia - some have said in Petersburg, others have said Fairfax County. Soon after the war, perhaps 1784/5, he was married to Louisa (Lucy) Yeomans (or Emmons) of Virginia, presumably the daughter of Drewry (Drury) Yeomans, Sr. as her seven children shared, as legatees, in his estate. (Court Minutes, Rockingham Co., N.C., Nov. Term, 1804, p. 25; May term, 1805, p. 57, 60; also from papers in John Bellenfant estate file at N.C. State Archives, Raleigh, N.C. in the Rockingham Co. estate files arranged alphabetically.)

The twins were said to have been born in Fairfax Co., Va. At least two children were born in Halifax Co., Va. where John had bought 118 acres of land on 16 Aug 1787 (Deed book 14, p. 160). Another tract was bought in Halifax Co. when sold for taxes there, recorded 18 April 1788. In 1792 John bought 310 acres of land in Rockingham Co. N.C., and he may have moved there soon after this transaction. (Deed Book C, p. 147, Feb. 15, 1792). Deed book E, p. 332 showed record of sale of this property 26 Oct 1798. There is a story that Louisa had been on a visit with her husband's people in Marseille, France and was on board ship on route home again when she died in giving birth to a daughter. The child, born 23 Aug 1727, was named "Mourning" because of this incident. Louisa was buried at sea.

There was a Sarah "Sally" (Ray) Bellerphant whose name appeared in Rockingham Co Will Abstracts - (1785-1865) - for 1805, 1846, and 1860, dau. of James Ray. There is a question as to whether she may bve been a second wife of John Bellenfant. No identification for her have we found.

John Bellenfant died before May, 1802, since Rockingham Co, N.C. Court Minutes at that time, p 251-262, recorded guardians appointed for his minor orphans. Concering John's death, there is a story that a store in Petersburg, Va., which he owned (?) and operated, caught fire and that he died as a result of injuries in fighting the fire. However, since he had resided in Rockingham Co., N.C. during the 1790's and since guardians were appointed for his orphan children in Rockingham Co., it is reasonable to think he died in that county. Another story was that John had worked at foundry in Rockingham Co. where there was a fire and that he died as result of fighting the fire."

Regarding connection with Lafayette: Another possibility is that Bellenfant came to America as part of the French army, under Rochambeau, that helped in the Revolution, 1780-1783.

Joe Cowden Bellenfant death email:

"This is the Bellenfant Line: Joe Cowden Bellenfant, son of Sam Jones Bellenfant and Sammie Edmonds, son of Joseph Watson Bellenfant and Matilde Seay, son of John Bellenfant II and Jane Mary Scales, son of our Original John Bellenfant and Louise Yoeman." [see also Sally Ray, 2d wife, entry]

The following deeds are abstracted in Rockingham County, North Carolina, Deed Abstracts, 1785-1800, by Irene B. Webster:

38: "C:147. William Johnson & wife Sarah to John Bellenfant for 120 pds 310 A on River bank adj James Ray, George Peay, Covington, Adam Tate. Feb. 15 1792. George Peay Sr, John May, Thomas Peay."

"Jesse R. Gililland went to Ill. about 1862 then to Calif. in 1864. Because he did not want to take sides during the Civil War. Annie died in 1867 and requested her good friend, Eliza Ferrel, to marry Jesse and care for the children. Jesse was at one time: Pike County coroner for 2 yrs. Also Justice of the Peace.

Mrs. Webb also sent a copy of several pages from the "History of Audrian County, Missouri'', published by the St. Louis National Historical Company, 1884, pp 602-606. This includes the following explanation of Jesse's Civil War years:

"Accordingly, during the second year of the war 'Squire Gililland went to Illinois, and from there in 1864, determined not to become mixed up with the strife in any way, he went to California, where he remained until after the restoration of peace. His position as to the war was one of great embarrassment. Sympathizing with the South, but patriotically attached to the Union, on the platform of the Constitution and the Union, he would have stood up sword in hand by his Southern kindred and friends; but outside of the Union he could not go. Still holding the ties of natural affection more sacred than all other earthly interests, he could not strike down his own sons and kindred who fought under the three-barred banner of the Confederacy, and he therefore determined to take no part in the struggle.''

"Joseph and Lucy Winn Gatewood are the parents of Robert Hay Taliaferro Gatewood who married Mary Agnes Gililland. Their Grandson, Dale Gatewood shared this information with me from his Data Base. There is a question regarding the middle name of Jesse Richardson Gililland. Dale lists it as Robert and our family has always listed it as Richardson. There is no positive proof for either name." The latter might be J. R. Gililland since we know he was a blacksmith.

"First Baptist Church of Laddonia - Was organized on the 3d of December, 1878. The names of the first members are: ... Jesse R. Gililland, Eliza A. Gililland..., James Gililland, and Lucinda A. Gililland."

The latter two are probably Jesse's son James Allen Gililland and his first wife Lucinda Roberta Self. However, a few lines further down the same page:

ANN "Annie" SHAW From 1993 Webb evidence:

"1840 U. S. Census lists the family of James Shaw, St. Chas. Co., MO and TX.

The History of Audrain County MO lists Annie Shaw, wife of J.R.Gililland and his family, occupations, and both of his marriages and the children of each. Annie had an aunt, Jane Shaw, who married Jonathan Riggs. Jonathan was a General in the War of 1812. Annie's father, James Shaw was b PA and d in TX. His father was James Shaw, his mother was Anna.

John Chester Swanson wrote a Personal History about, the Gilliland's, his family. His mother was Annie Lizzie Gililland, a daughter of Jess and Annie Shaw Gililland. Annie's twin brother was James Allen Gililland. John Chester Swanson, THE WAY IT WAS FOR THE SWANSONS - 1904-1987; 1990; Published by his daughter after his death, a well documented Personal History. [Copy in poss of Mrs Webb]

LDS Microfiche #N-0388, Apr 1984, MO, Batch M515341 Serial Sheet #0489 lists the marriage and sealing to spouse dates."

Lincoln Co Marriages, p 18:

"Jesse R. Gilliland to Ann Shaw 1 May 1839"

But we have a potential problem here. The following is from the Webb Family evidence, by Ellen Sayers Lanza:

"Uncle Jimmie Shaw and Aunt Polly had among their family twin boys, Bob and John Shaw, who came to Texas at an early day and settled in or near Bistro (Bastrop) Country [sic]. Annie Shaw married a man by the name of Rainey and moved to Austin in the early days. The family became prominent in financial and social circles; the present banking commissioner is of that Shaw Family."

So who is this "Mr Rainey"? Did Ann marry twice? Is there a confusion of Ann Shaw's?

Donna Syrett's site has nothing to say about Ann Shaw. ANN was born at St Charles, Missouri, USA, on 17 October 1817. A Raley Story (1982) gives birth as 1817 Lincoln Co MO. 1850 census implies c1817

Boyd Genealogy says "in (probably), St Charles County, Missouri".1,5,6,7,8,9 She married JESSE RICHARDSON GILILLAND at Lincoln, Missouri, USA, on 1 May 1839. A Raley Story gives date as 1 May 1838.
Pamela Butler gives 1 may 1838.
Nielson: 1 May 1838, Lincoln Co, MO.1,10,5,7,11,12,13,9,14 As of 1 May 1839,her married name was GILILLAND.1,10,5,7,11,12,13,9,14 ANN died in 1867 at Laddonia, Audrain, Missouri, USA. Nielson: 1867, Lincoln Co, MO.1,5,13,15

MotherDORCAS CLEARWATER
JOHN HENRY MOORE The Wm-Rosetta Gililland Family Group Record contains the following:

Credits for sources: Coles County, Illinois 1850 Census, Crawford County, Illinois, 1850 Census, Brown County, Texas 1870 Census, San Saba P.O.(?), p. 76.

His mother is credited to Tennessee Marriage Records III, Green County, Tennessee.

Possible sisters are Elizabeth (b 1798) and Lucinda.

He was married three times. His second wife's surname is Allison or Anderson. His third wife's surname was also Montague. Mrs Webb has this written beside her name: "Crawford County, Illinois''.

The 1993 Webb Gililland evidence has this:

"1850, 1855, and 1860 U.S. Census lists the John H. Moore family in Coles Co., IL.
!CENSUS: 1850 U. S. Census, Coles Co., IL, Salisbury Pct. #88; In LDS Library.
!CENSUS: 1855 U. S. Census, Coles Co., IL, Twnshp 11, Rio East, p 49.
!CENSUS: 1860 U. S. Census, Coles Co., IL.
By 1870 the family was in San Saba, Brown County, TX.
!CENSUS: 1870 U. S. Census, Brown Co., TX, p 76. NOTE: Age 66 b TN, Mary age 4[?] b IL, farmer owns real estate $700.

NOTE: In 1850 Census of Crawford Co., IL there is James A Moore, possibly a brother to John H., and Elizabeth Moore age 60, b N C. She may be the mother of both.

NOTE: The "Allison" listed with this family is male, b Abt 1847, no record of him after the move to TX. Susan and Catherine may be children of a former marriage since John is some 23 years older than Mary.

This family left IL around 1853 and walked to TX. They had a wagon pulled by a milk cow with a goat tied to the back. It took 2 years for the trip and they may have lost a child on the way. Census records indicate that they settled in San Saba, Brown County, TX. Living family members have no memories of this family. (1975)."
JOHN was born at Tennessee, USA, in 1804. A Raley Story (1982), same researcher, gives birth as 1804 NC.3,4 He married MARY MONTAGUE at Illinois, USA, circa 1848. Date is deduced from first child's birthdate of 1849. IL comes from A Raley Story (1982) only, and is not backed up by the same researcher's 1993 data. This might be Coles Co or Montague Co IL..5,6,4 He moved circa 1855 at Brown, Texas, USA. Listed in the Brown Co, TX 1870 census. See daughter Rosetta's obituary for evidence that this move occurred ca 1855..1,7 JOHN died after 1870. Listed in the 1870 Brown Co, TX census.
