(?) BAKER1,2

M
Father?ISAAC BAKER
(?) was born. He The Carroll Co (Jim Lair) evidence gives a possibility, not proved:

"Several members of the Baker family who have done extensive genealogical research believe that John Baker's grandfather was Isaac Baker, and that he lived with his wife and children - six sons and three daughters - near Baltimore, Maryland. Then, in 1765, when the danger of Indian attack began to diminish, the Isaac Baker family moved into the beautiful Holston River area of Southwest Virginia, between the Cumberland and Appalachian Mountains.

In later years, Isaac Baker died and was buried in Bristol, Tennessee. Isaac Baker's six sons were: William Baker, Isaac Baker, Jr., Joshua Baker, Evan Baker, John Baker, and Thomas Baker. A local history states that of that group William and John Baker were hunters and explorers of both Kentucky and Tennessee."

So one of these sons would be our Mr BAKER by this theory.

Green Wade Hampton1,2,3,4,5,6

M, b. 12 December 1793, d. 27 December 1878
Green Wade Hampton From the Schuler Family Group Sheet evidence:

"Notes:
1820 Wayne Co.KY census
1828 Dec 25 Cumberland Co, KY, Sulpher Creek, Land deeded to Sara and Green Wade Hampton by Isaac Riddle.
1830 Cumberland Co,KY census
1850 Green Wade HAMPTON was a wagonmaster in Barry Co. MO census
1850 LaClede Co MO census
1860 Carroll Co AR census
1850 Census/Goodspeed says he was born in Maine"

Green had two other wives: Sarah Johnson and Mary-Miriam Bryant.

The following interesting note was supplied by Alva M Smith. It is an item from "Madison County Musings", Spring 1985, an article about Pleasant M Johnson:

"In January, 1837, he [Johnson] was elected the first Sheriff of Madison County [AR], an office he held until the elections of 1844. One of his last duties as Sheriff, Pleasant Johnson escorted a man by the name of Green M. Hampton to the State Penitentiary at Little Rock."

Mrs Smith suggests that this is Green Wade Hampton, that the script M and script W are often confused. We do know that Green's wife Frankie Baker died about 1845 and their three children were raised by a succession of relatives from that time on. If Green were in prison, this would explain why he didn't raise them. Some researchers call him the "Black Sheep" in the family. Perhaps this is why.

Bell Co TX Bios:

"Green Wade HAMPTON

Posted by Fran Schuler 18 Sep 1999. Here is an earlier posting by the same:

"This fellow moved around a lot. He was born in VA 12Dec1793, according to 1820 Census. He lived in Wayne Co. KY in 1828. Goodspeed 1850 census says he was born in Maine. One of his wives was Frankie BAKER, born 1814 in MO, another was Sarah ?, another was Mary BRYANT. (George W. HAMPTON married Martha BRYANT in Barry Co, MO in 1849.) Green Wade married Frankie in Carroll, AR in 1838. He was a wagonmaster in Barry Co, MO in 1850.

He died in Three Forks, Bell, TX on 27DEC1878. I would like to find his parents and exchange information with anyone interested.

There is a FamilySearch Ancestral File (LDS) that gives Green Wade HAMPTON and Frances "Frankie" BAKER as parents of Michael Wade HAMPTON. It also lists Wade HAMPTON and Anna BAKER as his parents. Unfortunately, the data for these two sets of parents don't match:

GWH b 12 Dec 1793 VA; WH b 28 Mar 1818 SC
GWH d 27 Dec 1878 TX; WH d 11 Apr 1902 SC
FB b 1814 MO; AB b c 1822 OK
FB d 1845 AR; AB d 1846
and so forth

Whereas GWH and FB married and died in Carroll Co AR, where Michael Wade Hampton was born, WH and AB appear to have no connection with AR. In a way, this is unfortunate for us, because WH is descended from a quite prestigious family of war heroes. Here is his lineage, youngest first:

Wade Hampton m Anna Baker
Wade II Hampton m Ann Fitzsimmons
Gen Wade Hampton m Harriet Flud
Anthony Hampton m Anne Elizabeth Preston
John II Jr Hampton m Margaret Wade
and more

"Gen" Wade Hampton was a Col in the Revolutionary War. In fact, he and his brothers Richard and Henry were all colonels in that war, and their brother Edward was a captain. This is from "King's Mountain and Its Heroes" by Draper, 83. Our BETHUEL RIGGS fought in this same battle of King's Mountain.

There is also a famous Gen Wade Hampton but he is of later vintage. The following is from the webpage: http://www.moc.org/Articles/scmain.html

"Gen. Wade Hampton, was appointed in May 1864 to replace J. E. B. Stuart as commander of Robert E. Lee's cavalry corps. When Gen. William T. Sherman's army invaded South Carolina in 1865, Hampton returned to his native state in a vain attempt to rally forces of resistance.
...
Reluctant to abide by a surrender he did not negotiate, Wade Hampton similarly did not admit defeat in politics. His election as governor in 1876 (after a disputed, often violent campaign) signaled the end of Reconstruction in the South. The former Confederate cavalry leader then won election to a seat among former foes in the U.S. Senate."

This matches the footnote on p 83 of King's Mountain and Its Heroes, mentioned above, which talks about a SC newpaper article written in 1843 by Col Wade Hampton Sr, father of "the present Senator Hampton, of that State." Since this was published in 1881, this is surely the same Senator, and General, mentioned above. Note that our Green Wade Hampton d 1878 and his son Michael Wade Hampton seems to have spent much of his life in AR and TX, not SC. I suspect that Wade Hampton was a popular name to give kids after both the Rev and Civil Wars.

Re "Gen" Wade Hampton in the LDS records, there is this entry in the Columbia Encyclopedia, 6th edition:

"In the War of 1812 the battle of Chateaugay was fought (1813) on the banks of the river in Quebec between an American invading force of 7,000 under Gen. Wade Hampton and some 750 Canadians and Native Americans. The Americans were defeated and had to abandon their plan to attack Montreal."

So it might well be that Col Wade Hampton in the Rev War went to become Gen Wade Hampton in the War of 1812. Indeed, from the HAMPTON-L Archives online:

William Baker A confusion in the John and Willie Elmey Baker family is son William. Does he or does he not exist? Several sources list William and Aaron as separate sons; some list William Aaron as one son. What seems to be the definitive evidence, David Johnson's estate papers, lists two separate sons, William and Aaron as heirs of Willie Elmey (Johnson) Baker. By comparison, the First Families of Carroll Co, AR evidence does not list William but says "it is known that Aaron Baker sometimes signed his name as "William Baker" during his younger years."

The Carroll Co, AR, First Families evidence, which doesn't list William or James, says, "the Federal Census of 1830 for Cape Girardeau County, Missouri, records another unknown son, younger than the aforementioned Sheppard, who did not migrate into Northwest Arkansas with this historic family."

Correspondent Alva M Smith takes Aaron Baker to be William Aaron Baker. She lists two William Bakers in the Cape Girardeau 1830 MO Census:

"P. 463
William Baker 0 1 1 0 0 1, 1 1 0 0 1
...
Page 466
*William Baker 1 0 0 0 1, 0 0 0 0 1
*I took this as my William Aaron Baker & his wife Barbara Shell Baker (B: 15 Feb 1804) and there son John Sherman Baker B: 1 Aug 1828"

She also points out that John Baker on p 466 and William Baker on p 466 are neighbors. A more readable rendering of the second William's census data is 1M 0-5, 1M 20-30, 1 F 20-30.

Frank Baker 1983:

"Who is this one?

Cape Girardeau, MO. 1850 Census

William Baker 1805 TN
Elizabeth 1807 KY
Sarah 1832 MO
Willie Ellen 1836 MO
Frederick J. 1837 MO
Thomas B. 1839 MO
James 1842 MO
Mary A. 1844 MO
Jonathan 1848 MO
Aaron 1850 MO"

Letter from Alva M Smith, 24 Jun 2001 (in which she passed to me the Frank Baker 1983 evidence):

"Please notice there at the bottom of enclosure #1. "Who is this one".

This just has to be John Baker and Willie Elmey Johnson Baker's oldest son!! I always assumed William Baker was the oldest child for he is named 1st in these court records as heirs of Willie Elmey Baker.

William Baker born 1805 fits the 1830 Census MO Cape Girardeau Co. 1 0 0 0 1 - 0 0 0 0 1. William coulw be 25 years old; Elizabeth would be 23 yrs. old; son uder five years old. This son by 1850 would be 20 to 25 years old and has already left home. I wonder wht his name was. This Census states William Baker was born in TN. I know some of the Baker reserchers state "John Baker was in Tennessee for awhile."

The names William & Elizabeth give their children are names we find in our John Baker & Aaron Baker Families except Thomas B. I check my 1830 Census MO Cape Girardeau Co page 466 John Baker was #3, William Baker was #4. ..."

This seems to be a pretty good argument, so I will enter this family. William was born at Tennessee, USA, circa 1805. He is listed as William Aaron Baker in Long GEDCOM. The birthplace and date, 1808 KY, come from this evidence alone. But this appears to be Aaron's data..7,5,6 He married Elizabeth (?).8 William was listed as the head of a family on the on 1 June 1850 Census at Cape Girardeau, Missouri, USA.8 William died. Long GEDCOM gives 1894, Carroll Co, AR but we have no other corroboration and this appears to be brother Aaron's data..7
