Pearl Latham
F, b. circa 1895, d. after 1964
Pearl Latham Pearl's folks, the Lathams, lived about 2 miles north of Mayhill, on the Penasco. Her 1st husband was Claude Posey. This family lived at Mayhill while we were growing up. Children: Gladys, Edwin, Alvin, and Ginevieve. I remember the family lived at Edgewood for a while and Pearl has told me that they tried to raise beans there--but dried out. I don't remember when Claude died, but Pearl was working in California when she and Dad started going together, I think. As we had known Pearl for a long time we Smiths called her Pearl, but our kids called her Grandma Pearl. She and Alvy III became great friends when he lived with them and worked one summer in Colorado. She found that he had a great appetite and she liked to cook. I don't remember just when she died, but after Dad died in Colorado, she sold out and came back to New Mexico--finally settling in Ruidoso.
She married Claude Posey. Pearl was born circa 1895.1 She married ALVY RAY "Ray" SMITH at Arizona, USA, circa May 1945.2 Pearl died after 1964 at New Mexico, USA.

Martha S Wilkerson Her parents' names are from the Giles County Cemetery Book, which lists A Y Wilkerson as her father. From the same Book, listed under the Wilkerson Cemetery, I obtained the information for Allen Y Wilkerson whom I assume is her father, since his dates are about right. This cemetery is located on Highway 64W, at Bodenham right on Weakley Creek Road, bear right on Ham's Creek Road, on Joe T Parker's farm. According to notes gathered by Alvy Smith (2) in Pulaski in 1990, she grew up in Giles County on her parents' place on Big Creek, a few miles north of Pulaski.
From Elizabeth Witt White note:
"Martha Wilkerson's parents were Allen Y. and Lethia Puryear Wilkerson from Granville Co. N.C." Martha was born on 6 November 1821.3 She married Thomas S Williamson before 23 October 1861. This was quite a coincidence as Grandmother Lucretia was born in Kimble Co--on Bear Creek. Dorothy said that there was not a community of Bear Creek but the cemetery was a pretty country cemetery, some 10 miles west of Junction.
Lela was the last living member of the Miller family--she was 94--Lelsa was a nice person--was a school teacher for a while. I am making a leap here, that needs further verification. I noted that wife Frances had moved from Tennessee to Missouri (Dorothy Lee Parrish evidence). This meant to me that she probably married David Harris in this country, perhaps even in MO. I could not find a listing for any Biarden's in the Missouri Marriages book (one Bierden) but I did find a listing for David Harris married to Francis Burden, and the timing, in 1825 works for Sina Harris b 1827:
p 98, Missouri Marriage Before 1840:
"Harris, David to Frances Burden 23 Oct. 1825, Char"
where "Char" is the marriage records source "Chariton Co. - Marriage Records of Chariton Co., Mo. 1821-52, by Elizabeth Prather Ellsberry"
As further evidence, witness this IGI Record from the LDS www.familysearch.org site:
"David HARRIS, Sex: M, Marriage(s): Spouse: Frances BEARDEN Marriage: 23 Oct 1825 Chariton, Missouri, Batch No 8932102, Sheet 26, Source Call No 1553576, Type Film" [downloaded 10 Mar 2000]. DAVID was born at Carolinas, USA, circa 1800.2 He married FRANCES BIARDEN (BURDEN)(BEARDEN) at Chariton, Missouri, USA, on 23 October 1825.3,4 DAVID died on 26 December 1848 at Williamson, Texas, USA.2

David "Dave" Sheppard Baker "Will, Frankie and Walter were the only ones of Dave and LIzzie's children to have children." Faye Miller Lewis evidence.
Baker's Crossing History:
"In October of 1883, Dave and Lizzie bought a 117 acre tract of land straddling the river from John A. Beckett, paying one thousand dollars, an exorbitant amount of money for the times.
They had six children by then. ...
The little house had the only wooden floor in the country. Young people walked long distances to dances held there, walking barefoot to save precious shoes for dancing. Babies were put to bed in the cellar, while their parents stomped to the country music overhead. Some walked as far as twenty miles, arriving in time to dance the night away.
Lizzie came to the crossing with a babe at her breast. In 1886, Frank was born. He lived only seventeen days, and is buried in the small graveyard by the house. Walter Henry, the last of Lizzie's children was born in 1888.
During the 1880s ... a post office [was] started .... The post office was called Norris, and Lizzie Baker was postmistress. Eventually Comstock and Juno were thriving communities. There was a mail route from Comstock to Ozona. The school and post office were no longer needed at Baker's Crossing. Both were shut down about 1895.
Lizzie sent Walter, her houngest son to San Antonio to attend Draughn's Business College in 1905. There he met Lois Selema McClane, the girl he was to marry. She was the youngest daughter of John McClane ...
Lizzie died in 1912, leaving the home place to Walter. The following spring he moved his family to the ranch from Uvalde, where he had owned and operated a livery stable.
...
Walter and Lem, as she was affectionately called, had three children in Uvalde, and two more after they moved to the ranch. ... Jim, the older son.... Perry, the younger.... A daughter, Ruby, was born in the home. Lem's last baby, a little girl, was stillborn and is buried in the little graveyard by Frank.
...
... Dave had sold out to his sons in 1909 .... In 1937 he came home, suffering from diabetic gangrene. Walter and Lem nursed him until his death in June of that year.
Lem died in her sleep at the old home in 1956. The ranch ... was divided by Walter and his two sons in 1969. ... After breaking his [Walter] hip in a fall, he was moved to Del Rio where his daughter Beth cared for him until his death in 198?.
Walter, his daughter Ruby, and his grandson, Sheppard were all born in the home at the Crossing. His son Jim died in 1971. He left Pedro Trevino [one of the old grants making up the ranch] to his wife, Mary Joyce. She remarried in 1976 and her husband, Leslie Hughey, remodeled ... the house .... They had two children, Jonathan and Anna Marie ...."
Frank Baker's reading of the 1880 Census Zavala Co. TX:
"Baker, David 30 M TX
Elizabeth 34 F TX
Linnie E. 10 TX
Joseph 8 M TX
James R 6 M TX
George W. 4 M TX
Thomas 1/12 M TX"
He identifies David Baker with the son of our SHEPPARD BAKER. This census partially matches this family from other sources. David and Elizabeth match, as do children James R and George W, but missing from the census are William b 1872, Sheppard b 1878, and Frances b 1880 from the previously obtained list and that list does not contain these children from the Census: Linnie E b c1870, Joseph b c 1872, and Thomas b c May 1880. Since the previously obtained list differed on birthdates for James and George, I am going to assume that its dates are untrustworthy, that the Census is more-or-less accurate, and that this family is indeed our David's family. So I will just add the 3 additional children suggested by the census and their dates even though the dates contradict some of the dates of the other children. This is a bit of a mess, so should be taken with full caution.
David was born at On a farm, Williamson, Texas, USA, circa May 1850.3,4,5,6,7,2 He married Elizabeth "Lizzie" Catherine Long at Running Brushy, Val Verde?, Texas, USA, on 23 December 1869.8,9,10,11,12 He moved circa 1872 at Vance, Real, Texas, USA. David was listed as the head of a family on the on 1 June 1880 Census at Zavala, Texas, USA.2 He was move in October 1883 at Bakers Crossing, Val Verde, Texas, USA.10 David died on 11 June 1937 at Bakers Crossing, Val Verde, Texas, USA.8,13,14,15,11 His body was interred in 1937 at Comstock, Val Verde, Texas, USA.16
