"The traceable family history of the John Baker family begins in South Carolina where John was born during 1781. He spent his childhood there as he grew toward maturity and he was then united in marriage with a South Carolina girl. Then, like so many of their peers, the Bakers began a life of mobility as they began to move westward in search of a better life for themselves and their children.
By the early 1800's they had found their way into Kentucky and John Baker's first two sons, Aaron (1805) and Sheppard (1810) were born there. From there the family moved into Tennessee for a time and then on to Southeastern Missouri, to settle on Crooked Creek, near Marble Hill in what is now Bollinger County. There two more children were born, Frances "Frankie" Baker (1815-1845) and Jonathan Baker (1817). Also, the Federal Census of 1830 for Cape Girardeau County, Missouri, records another unknown son, younger than the aforementioned Sheppard, who did not migrate into Northwest Arkansas with this historic family.
Another even happened in the life of John Baker while the family was still in Missouri. Evidently his first wife died and he was united in marriage with Nancy Bolin.
On October 11, 1832, the growing Baker family left their homes on Crooked Creek to begin a journey by wagon train into the Northwest Arkansas Ozark Geographical Region. The family members who made that trip were as follows: John Baker and his second wife, Nancy (Bolin) Baker, and their three children, Willie Elizabeth Baker (1828), Jackson Baker (1829), and Benjamin Baker (1830); John Baker's son, Aaron Baker and his wife, Barbara (Schell) Baker, and their four children, John Sherman Baker, Fannie Baker, Mary Baker, and Frederick Baker; and John Baker's teenage children by his first marriage, Frances "Frankie" Baker and Jonathan Baker.
This historic family crossed the Kings River, at the mouth of Keel Creek, on January 1, 1833. Three days later they selected a home site south of Osage Creek, about three miles west of what would become Berryville, Arkansas, in an area that became known as the Shady Grove region of Carroll County. Their journey had been a long one as they traveled by way of Springield, Missouri, Bentonville, Arkansas, Fayetteville, Arkansas, and on across the prairie lands toward Hindsville. From there they followed the less timbered ridge tops northeast to the headwaters of Keels Creeks. There they crossed the Kings River and on to their new homesite in the Osage Valley.
After his arrival, John Baker established a hand-operated, steel grain mill in the western part of Carroll County and that mill provided a needed agricultural service for other early settlers."

There are several problems with the JOHN BAKER genealogical research, so please read the following.
There are several sources of evidence for this family, sometimes conflicting: from Jo Ann Locher Johnson (based on estates), from researcher George Miller, from World Family Tree #0249 (compiler unknown) on Family Tree Maker's collection of trees distributed on CDs, from Jenny Long's GEDCOM, from an article by Jim Lair and a book by him, and from The Shoecobbler's Kin by Lorena Shell Eaker.
He is John Baker in JoAnn Locher's evidence. She lists the following children, in this order: William, Aaron, Sheppard, James, Jonathan, Frances ("Franky") as the heirs Willie Elmey Johnson Baker and John Baker. Jo Ann, in an email, says that the book "The Shoecobbler's Kin" by Lorena Shell Eaker proposes that Aaron might be William Aaron, but Jo Ann's evidence, an estate settlement, separates the two. Jo Ann lists a second wife Nancy Bolin.
He is Jonathan Baker in the George Miller evidence that lists the children, in this order: Aaron, Sheppard, Francis, Jonathan, Willie, Jackson, Benjamin, Solomon Richard, Sarah Jane. George has these as children of Agnes Denny b 1789 in VA (perhaps) and lists a second wife Elizabeth Nancy Boren.
He is Jonathan "John" Baker in the WFT evidence. Here his first wife is listed as "Sheppard" (presumably her surname, since there was such a family in the area at the time), with children in order: William Aaron, Sheppard, Frances "Frankie", and Jonathan. The second wife is listed as Elizabeth Nancy Bolin with children Willie Elizabeth, Jackson, Benjamin, Solomon, and Sarah.
Another piece of evidence, the Sheppard family tree for the Cape Girardeau County, MO area lists Sarah Sheppard b 4 Dec 1804 married "1)_______Baker 2)James W. Bennett". This is the right time and place for her to have married Jonathan "John" Baker as her first husband, but this fact does not show up in the other trees other than the one "Sheppard" entry as first wife in the WFT evidence. There is therefore a mystery here. Conceivably John Baker married three times (say, to Sarah Sheppard, Willie Elmey Johnson, then Elizabeth Nancy Bolin) but this would require Sarah Sheppard to have divorced, an unlikely event considering that these people were all apparently quite strong Baptists.
Other researchers also believe John had 3 wives, but they are listed as Willie Elmey Johnson, Agnes Denny, and Nancy Bolin, in that order. Jim Lair's article claims Agnes and Jonathan married in Wayne Co., KY on 27 Nov 1813, but this implies Frances and Jonathan are not Willie Elmey's children, contradicted by her father's estate.
The unusual name Sheppard Baker makes sense if one of his grandparents had the surname Sheppard. We know that Willie Elmey was dead by 1823 (from her father's estate), which is consistent with the WFT listing of children born from 1828 on (1825 on in George Miller's tree) to be assigned to wife Elizabeth Nancy Bolin. It also makes some sense that Sarah's children (assuming she was wife number one) would be listed as Willie's heirs, as they were in her father's will. But perhaps it makes more sense to assume they are Willie's children, and that one of them, Sheppard, was named to honor the first wife's family. Notice that the two girls mothered by Nancy Bolin are named Willie and Sarah, perhaps in honor of the first two wives? But there remains the mystery of what happened to Sarah Sheppard before she went on to marry James Bennett and be buried in the Bennett cemetery. And why is she not listed at all by several sources? How does Agnes Denny, who IS mentioned by several sources, fit into all this?
Jenny Long's evidence adds another possible wife to the mix: Susan Kennedy (and also "Unknown Sheppard" as another wife). Jonathan married her, according to this evidence, in Williamson County, Texas, 14 Oct 1802. Nobody else mentions this woman. The place is suspect.
Summary: Don't trust the wives in this entry. Some of them can't be right. My current belief: wife 1 is Willie Elmey Johnson, wife 2 is Nancy Bolin. No additional evidence points to Susan Kennedy. The evidence for ? Sheppard is slim. Although a Jonathan Baker must have married Agnes Denny in 1813, there is no strong evidence linking this Jonathan with our John. In fact, it might be a confusion of Jonathan with John that is the source of this probable error. The David Johnson (Willy Elmey's father) estate evidence is the strongest proof that Agnes could not have been John/Jonathan's wife at the stated time, as argued above.
Because of the arguments above I have removed two of the marriages from the database: the marriage of 14 Oct 1802 to Susan Kennedy and the marriage of 27 Nov 1813 to Agnes Denny, as of 8 Mar 2000.
Also, since the documentation actually supports only the name John, I have changed the name JONATHAN "John" BAKER to JOHN BAKER. Not only is this consistent with the known documentation, but it does not encourage us to confuse John and Jonathan, which are nearly always treated as distinct names.
Finally, since the sources I trust do not use Elizabeth in the name of the second wife, I shall drop that now, awaiting further evidence to the contrary.

For what it's worth: Carroll Co became official 1 Nov 1833 by an act of the US Congress. It was formed from the western part of Izard Co, effective 25 Dec 1833..8 JOHN was listed as the head of a family on the on 1 June 1850 Census at Carroll, Arkansas, USA.12,14 JOHN died in 1862 at Osage Valley, Carroll, Arkansas, USA.29,30,18 His body was interred in 1862 at Carroll, Arkansas, USA, at Baker-Bussey Cemetery.31

"Frances "Frankie" Baker (1815-1845) was united in marriage with Green W. hampton during 1838. After their marriage the couple lived one-fourth of a mile east of the present location of the Shady Grove Cemetery. Three children, Michael Hampton (1839), Riley G. Hampton (1841), and Marzella [perhaps Maryella] Hampton (1843), were born to their union there.
Frances "Frankie" (Baker) Hampton died during 1845, and she was buried across the lane from her home on the north edge of the "Barth Place." Her children when [sic] to live with their grandparents, John and Nancy Baker. [This is recorded in 1850 Census of Carroll Co AR]
Seven years after their mother's death, the teenage Hampton children went to Coryell County, Texas, to live with their uncle and aunt, Washington and Willie (Baker) Perryman, who had lived in Texas since 1852.
Micahel Hampton was united in marriage with Mary Ann Williamson during 1859; Frances Hampton married Andrew P. Cox in 1861; and Riley G. Hampton married Julia Ann Williamson during 1866. Michael and Riley both joined the Confederate Army during the Civil War, after the War they both became Texas Rangers and farmers and ranchers. Each of the three Hampton children had ten or more children of their own and many descendants still live in the Coryell County, Texas area - (NOTE: The Heritage Center in Berryville has a copy of a Coryell County, Texas History that was graciously given by the publishers of this volume and that work contains more information on the Hampton family for those who are interested.)"

After the birth of those children the Perryman family moved to Coryell County, Texas during 1852. There other children were born and they included: Charity Perryman (1853), California Perryman (1854), George W. Perryman (1856), Thomas R. Perryman (1859), David W. Perryman (1861), and Willie V. The census above is provided by Frank Baker who identifies this Jackson with our Jackson son of JOHN BAKER.
The census data was passed to me via Alva M Smith, who questions the NC birth state above (our Jackson was b MO) and hence by implication the evidence altogether. She adds this note: "I have a Jackson Baker paying taxes (poll) in 1853 in Carroll Co. AR Prairie Twp!! Listed along with John Baker, Aaron Baker, and Jonathan Baker. Source: Carroll County AR Prairie Twp Land & Personal Tax Records."
Note that Jackson 21 in 1850 AR Census implies b ca 1829, and that Jackson 32 in 1860 TX Census implies b ca 1828. That is pretty close for census data. We know that our Jackson d in TX, so that fits, although the evidence is not strong. We could argue that Jackson didn't leave Carroll Co AR until after he paid taxes in 1853, but the Census above has his son John b ca 1851 in TX. It is possible that he maintained land in AR but lived in TX.
This seems to be just murky enough to wait for further confirmation before entering the census data above as our data.

Solomon Richard Baker From Carroll Co, First Families, evidence:
"Soloman and Sarah Baker, John and Nancy Baker's twins, were born during 1835, in Carroll County, Arkansas, and they grew up in the Shady Grove area.
Solomon Baker went to California during the days of the "Gold Rush" and he was united in marriage with Virginia Melton circa 1860. Their children were: William P. Baker (1863), John Baker (1866), Lee Baker, Nancy Baker, Mary Baker (1871), and Charles R. Baker (1875). The Baker children were all born in Madison County, Arkansas, but the family moved to central Oklahoma where Solomon Baker died during 1889, and he was interred in the Allen Cemetery, in Pontotoc County, Oklahoma. After his death the family moved to Coal County, Oklahoma, where several of them found employment in the cola mines. Several members of Solomon Baker's familiy moved to Ada, Oklahoma, during the early 1900's, and their descendants continue to live there."
