"To my Smith Cousins,

Last night at 3:00 a.m. when I couldn't sleep because I knew I had more information on Jesse R. Smith. I went crazy tearing through my packed boxes. I was looking for a letter that my uncle Benjamin Billups wrote to me in 1969. I found it. He had been doing research on Jesse Smith for 8 years. Jesse was his great grandfather. He died in 1978 and I know that he had quite a lot of information. I am sad to say it is lost to me but this might help you in our search. I am going to copy this to you word for word. Here Goes!

Jesse Richard Smith was born in 1820 in Alabama, of parents, both of whom were born in North Carolina. Family legend says he was in Texas prior to the War of Independence; that he was the oldest boy in the wagon trains fleeing across the Trinity ahead of the Mexican Army under Santa Ana; that he was later a bridge guard.

Jesse R. Smith served from May 18, 1846, to Oct. 2, 1846 in Capt. Herbert's Co., 1st Regiment, Texas Mounted Rifles (Hay's Texas Rangers) in the Mexican War, mustering out at Monterey, Mexico. On 15 Feb. 1849, he married Elizabeth M. Harrison at Brenham, Washington Co., Texas. Family legend says he was an Indian fighter, either as a member of the Texas Rangers or one of the frontier units which existed in Texas. He was wounded, (the maner is not clear) in the hip in one such encounter, crippled, and walked with a cane the last years of his life.

He was living in Atascosa Co. in 1860, lived some portion of his life in San Aba Co., and in 1880 was living in Runnels Co., a rancher. In 1884, when his wife died, he was in Abilene, Texas. About 1890 he with his sons and their families, moved to New Mexico, settling in the Cloudcroft area of Otero Co., New Mexico. He died in 1905.

Children of Jesse R. Smith and Elizabeth Mary Harrison were:

2. William L., born 27 Nov. 1852. Disappeared after an encounter with James Wesley Hardin, about 1880.
3. Samuel O., born 11 Apr. 1856. Died Douglas, AZ.
4. Cordelia Josephine, born 12 May 1858, married Phineas Watkins Hudman.
5. Sophrona Parilee, born 23 Mar. 1860, at Pleasantown, Atascosa Co., Texas, married Benjamin Monroe Hudman, on 8 April 1888 at Lookout, Lincoln Co., New Mexico. Died, Pasadena, Ca. 1935.

      1. Ernest - died in infancy.
      2. Jesse Earl Hudman - married Elizabeth Scott, died 1964.
      3. Emmett Eddy Hudman, died Pasadena, Ca., 1936, married Ophelia Maples.

7. Benjamin Benton Smith, born 22 Sept. 1867 in Texas, married a daughter of Jim Gilliland, one of the principals of the Lincoln Co. War in New Mexico, settled near Cliff, N.M. rancher. Children: Ray, died Las Cruces, N.M., in 1964; Benjamin B., living 1966 in Globe, AZ.
8. Jesse R. Smith, born 11 Sept. 1867, twin of Benjamin B.

This is mostly new information, and a wealth of it. There is a bug or two, however: Jim Gililland was the brother of BEN SMITH's wife, dau of WILLIAM FRANKLIN GILILLAND. RAY SMITH died in 1964 but not in Las Cruces, NM; he died in Delta, CO.

A followup posting on 6 Jul 2001, also by Sherry Thompson, adds these details (from another letter form her uncle):

"Jesse R. Smith
Born in Alabama, on the same day, same year as Benjamin Turner Hudman
...
Family legion says that he was a Texan prior to the War of Independance, that he was the oldest boy in the wagon train leaving San Antonio before the battle of the Alamo in Feb., 1836.

From his pension record it is ascertained that he was enrolled in the 1st Regiment, Tx. Mounted Rifles on 18 May 1846 at Point Isabel, Texas on 7 June took part in the fighting around Monterey, Mexico and was mustered out 10 Oct. 1846 at Monterey.

He was an Indian fighter and Johnny Ben Hudman says it was by getting dragged by a horse during an Indian fight, another Minnie Lois Hudman says that he was wounded by an arrow in an Indian fight, resulting in a broken hip.

He was believed to be living in San Saba County in 1860 when Sophronia P. was born. A few years later, they evidently moved to the vicinity of San Antonio, then to Abilene, where they were living about 1875. He was in Runnels County on 2 June, 1880 at the time of the census. He was living at Content, Runnels Co., on F3b. 17, 1887 when he filed an application for a pension on basis of this Mexican War Service. He was living in Cloudcroft, N.M. on 1 Dec. 1902. The last record of him, the cancellation of his Pension on Feb. 4, 1906, which state that his pension was last paid on 4 Nov. 1902, and the claim was dropped because of failure to claim the money. Pension Certificate was #3,337.

Death:
He died near Cloudcroft and is buried in Cox Canyon, in a small community graveyard on the Talley or Bonnell ranch property. This cemetery is opposite the old Sawmill site."

"I did not know that Polk was in Elizabeth's name. I thought her maiden name was Harrison. I assumed this because of the marriage record of Jessie R. and Elizabeth Harrison in Washington County, Texas. Also, there is a James Harrison in their home in the 1860 Census that I thought may be her brother. Also, an E. B. Harrison family is in the next dwelling in the 1860 Census, and a couple other reasons I thought her name was Harrison. Sophronia's family show her maiden name as Harrison. There is so much we do not know. I have never looked for records in Waco. I can see where Jesse R. bought 320 acres for $320 in 1862 in Atascosa County then sold it to E. B. Harrison in 1866 for $320, same legal description. He bought three lots in Pleasanton in 1866 for $200, sold two of them in 1868 for $160. In 1870 they (J. R. and Elizabeth M.) sold stock (cattle) for $3,000. There is a Benjamin and Catherine Smith family in Washington County that I feel might be Jesse's parents, but no proof."

The only one of these that is definitely ours is the last one. Not only is it for Jesse R (but it has Jesse K written above it), but Herbert's Co, 1st Texas Mounted Volunteers matches his pension file information as relayed in Benjamin Billups letters (see above). One thing is clear: his rank was Private.

NARA Seattle had the Mexican War Pension Index, but not the pensions themselves. Here is the index entry for JESSE, on microfilm series T317, roll 11, Roby, Thomas-Smith, John:

His dau Mary E Goodsell, in 1880 TX Census, is listed as having her father from MS, her mother from AL (qv)..13,14,15,4 He moved on 2 March 1836 at Texas, USA. Jesse was granted a "second class headright" to 640 acres for those who became citizens of the Republic of Texas during its first year and a half - that is, between founding day 2 Mar 1836 and 1 Oct 1837. The headright was granted by the Land Commissioners of Montgomery Co but the land Jesse chose was in Henderson Co..16 He bought property at Henderson, Texas, USA, on 7 December 1841. Actually not a deed but a headright to land granted to him conditionally on 2 Aug 1838 and unconditionally on 7 Dec 1841 with land surveyed Oct 1840..16 JESSE served in the military at Texas, USA, on 18 May 1846.17 He sold property at 640 acres, Henderson Co., TX, Huntsville, Walker, Texas, USA, on 29 August 1848. Land is in Henderson Co, TX, but Jesse signs the deed in Walker Co, TX and the deed is attested the same day in Huntsville, Walker Co, TX. It says Jesse is "of Washington County"..16 He resided at Washington, Texas, USA, on 29 August 1848. See deed of this date, which states his residence is Washington Co..16 He married ELIZABETH MARY HARRISON at Brenham, Washington, Texas, USA, on 15 February 1849.18,19,20,21 JESSE was listed as the head of a family on the on 1 June 1860 Census at Atascosa, Texas, USA.4 JESSE was listed as the head of a family on the on 1 June 1870 Census at Pleasanton, Atascosa, Texas, USA.22,3 JESSE was listed as the head of a family on the on 1 June 1880 Census at Tom Green, Texas, USA.6 JESSE was listed as the head of a family on the on 1 June 1880 Census at Runnels, Texas, USA.5 JESSE applied for a military pension on 1 March 1887.
