Sarah Jewel1

F
Sarah died. Sarah was born. She First Settlers, p37:

"Peter Bebout married, December 1st, 1767, Sarah Jewel, and had a son, Ebenzer [sic]"

I believe this is simply an error. See the next entry:

New Providence Presbyterian Records, Marriages, 1747:

"Bebout, Ebenezer, & Sarah Jewell, Dec. 23."

So Ebenezer married Sarah Jewel, not his (assumed) father.

Samuel Parrott1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8

M, b. 8 October 1716, d. 29 November 1788
FatherSAMUEL PARROTT d. b 1728
Mother[Widow Darling = PARROTT WIFE 2] (?)
Samuel Parrott From Arlien Sifleet's evidence:

"Eleanor Parrot ... was d. Sam Parrott of Troy (s. Sam Parrot of Elizabethtown N.J. who was of Eliz - as early as 1704 & who has the record of births & deaths in his family now being in possession of Mrs. Mary Smith, Troy Hills N.J. stating his oldest child was born there) born in Eliz 10/8/1716 d. in Troy 11/29/1788 & Eleanor Alling d. & only child of Joseph Alling but traditionally earlier of Eliz."

Parritt Homestead:

"In 1745 Eleanor married Samuel Parrit, born October 8 1716 second son of Samuel Parrit by his second wife, of Elizabethtown." This makes WILLIAM b 1714 the first son of SAMUEL.

Also:

"Here Eleanor Alling and her husband lived and here their children were born, Phebe, Elizabeth, Susanna, Charity, Joseph, Ann, Mary, Eleanor, Samuel 1st, Samuel 2nd, and Archibald. I can find no Rebecca, wife of Ebenezer Farrand on the list. If she is a sister of these as some claim, she must be a half sister by a former marriage of Samuel Parrit Jr. as Rebecca was born 1740, five years previous to his union with Eleanor Alling. So far we can find no record of such a marriage. [But cf ?Phebe and ?Rebecca]

Of Eleanor's eleven children, we see six reach maturity. After her death which occurred August 7 1787 her husband's following in November one year later ..."

So dying young or in infancy were Susanna, Mary, both Samuels and Archibald.

I am equating the Eleanor Alling of Arlien's notes with the Helen of "Sam + Helen Parrot" elsewhere in her notes, Eleanor being a form of Helen. The dates make sense, the locale makes sense (Whippany, Troy Hills, and Hanover are all within 4 miles of one another), and the religion makes sense (Arlien copied her notes from Presbyterian church records in these towns). All the children's names are supported by other evidence so I think I am justified.

Here are the notes for children of Sam + Helen Parrot in the evidence:

"Whippany Pres. Church Records

Joseph - s. Sam + Helen Parrot 7/17/1754
Anne - d. " " 6/23/1756
Charity - d. " " 10/29/1752
Phebe+Eliz. d. " " 1/22/1749"

These are baptism dates rather than birth dates as some of Arlien's notes show.

Joseph Alling (Allen) (Allin) Arlien Sifleet's notes:

"Eleanor Alling d. & only child of Joseph Alling"

See evidence for son-in-law Samuel Parrott.

From Alling evidence:

"Joseph Allen (Allin), b. presumably in 169_ or 170_, traditionally at Elizabethtown, but no confirmation of this is found; d. 1753-60 in present Troy Hills, Morris Co. He is first mentioned in a deed of July 2, 1725, to Gershom Mott as owning land next that conveyed, on Parsippany (now called Troy) Brook in Hanover tp. (HuCt I, rev.: 74). He was perhaps the earliest of the pioneer residents of the Parsippany-Troy Hills area to acquire land there after the West Jersey Proprietors, in 1715, took up their apportionments in that part of the Colony. His home, of which the foundation site was identifiable within living memory, was on the present Beverwyck Road, South, closely adjacent to the residence, still standing, built by his grandson, Dr. Joseph Parritt, and inherited by the latter's sister Eleanor, wife of Col Hiram Smith, whose descendants have since, as late as 1942, owned and occupied it as a Smith homestead. A small brook nearby is referred to in a road survey of 1762 as "Joseph Allen's Brook". (MsPO). In March, 1726/7, Joseph Allen was chosen constable for Hanover tp. In 1737, spelling his name "Allin", he mortgaged 110 acres of his farm next Parsippany (Troy) meadows, and paid off the mortgage in yearly instalments for the next ten years. (HuCt 2:165; HuMT C:15). In 1747/8 and 1749 he was Overseer of the Poor in Hanover tp., and is last mentioned on Aug. 31, 1753, in the diary of Rev. Jacob Green of Hanover, as furnishing a load of hay. (MrCt 1:212,243; Princeton Univ.Lib.Mss.). He left no will, his property descending to his only daughter. In a Court order in 1801, referring to the above land, his name is given as "Joseph Alling", but the only specimen of his signature found to date omits the final "g". (MrD A:228; L:1)."

Col Hiram Smith Although he is usually referred to as Col Smith, I have not found evidence of his being a Colonel in the Revolutionary War. However, he definitely was a Lieutenant in the Continental Army:

Officers & Men in the Revolutionary War, Part II, Digest and Revisions, p 29:

"Smith, Hiram. Private, Continental Army; Serjeant, ditto; Lieutenant, ditto."

Also, Part I, Official Roster of State Troops and Militia, p 457:

Perhaps he was a Colonel in a later conflict?

Parritt Homestead:

"On January 15 1833 Col Hiram Smith was granted a pension of $101.66 per year for having served a private, sergeant and lieutenant in the Army of the American Revolution. On April 27 1833 he died. his tombstone is to be found in Parsippany Cemetery.

The March before his death he had drawn up an agreement between his two sons Hiram Smith Jr. and Samuel P. An article of some interest in this agreement provided that Jack, a negro servant who had served Samuel P. Smith seven years should now serve Hiram J. seven years and then become the joint property of both Hiram and Samuel P. and that they were to be equally responsible for his support and maintenance the rest of his life. The document was witnessed by Walter Kirkpatrick."

Richard Smith evidence:

"Lt. Col. Hiram Smith, born 1756, died 1833. It is from this man that we are all descended. At the age of 20 he entered the Continental Army as a sergeant. His report of his various services - Albany, Johnstown, Ft. Stanwix, For Schuyler, Ticonderoga - is all interesting. (I have always heard that it was at Ticonderoga that he received his Colonelcy.) My great grandfather, often referred to as "Col. Hiram" or "Senior", married first Eleanor Parritt (I can't locate that date.) She was the only daughter of Samuel Parritt, and she came from Albany. Her mother was the daughter of Joseph and Eleanor Allin, Alling, or Allen. Colonel Hiram Smith was a man of affairs in his time and community. He was Justice of the Peace, Member of the State Assembly, Sheriff, County Judge, Major of N. J. Militia, and Trustee of the Parsippany Presbyterian Church. He possessed commanding presence and great dignity of bearing. After marriage to Eleanor Parritt they lived in the Smith homestead on Whippany Road with a porch 2 stories high known to us as Florence Smith's house. They had 8 children, all of whom lived to maturity. After Eleanor Parritt Smith's death in 1810, this site became the household of Col. Hiram and his second wife, Susan Ten Eyck, daughters Nancy and Addie, son Hiram and his wife (Mary Allen Osborn) and their 6 children. Susan Ten Eyck Smith was the widow of Dr. Henry White Darlee of Parsippany. Through this "second consort" we have inherited several fine pieces of furniture. A mirror with a golden eagle atop of it hangs beside me as I write; a settee is now at the Richard Smith Baldwin house. About 1830 grandmother decided that they had better have their own home; so grandfather bought from a Mr. Cobb a house on the ridge about a mile away that is now owned and occupied by my nephew, Richard Smith Baldwin."

Also, this evidence says that he and his 2d wife had no issue.

Phebe Parrott The marriage attribution here is suspect. The "logic" is this: This is the only Phebe Parrott I did not have paired up with a husband. First Settlers refers to Phebe Parrott, wife of Caleb Potter. She is the right age, right religion, and living not too far away to make the match to the current Phebe make sense.

First Settlers, p 328:

"Mr. Caleb Potter died 27th May, 1799, aged 49 years. His first wife died 25th April, 1771, aged 31 years [implies she was b 1740]"

The 1740 birth is a problem however, since her putative parents were married in 1745. Could her death year be off by 10 - ie 1781? This would imply her b 1751, which matches her m 1770 and her parents m 1745. Her baptism in 1749 could also mean that she was born b abt 1749 rather than abt 1740.

The d 1771 has another problem. She was married 1770, but had two children. Something is not right! Again, if it were 1781 instead, then everything works.
