"JAMES CAULDWELL, with his wife Mary, emigrated from Ireland, about the year 1732, when his son William was six years old, and settled on Long Hill, on lot, No. 30, addition of the Elzabethtown lots, which it appears he drew.

From tradition among the families, it would seem, and I am led to believe, that James Cauldwell's wife was Mary Gaston, sister of the father of Hugh Gaston, of Peapack.

Hugh Gaston, was brother of Capt. William Logan's wife, and probably also brother of the wife of Thomas Kirkpatrick, at Liberty Corner. His children called him Uncle Hugh Gaston, and Mr. Gaston, Mrs. Logan, and the old Kirkpatrick family claimed kin to the Cauldwell family.

JAMES CAULDWELL, had children:

JOSEPH "George" (GERSHON) HORWITZ (DLOOGACH)1,2

M, b. circa 1860, d. 9 November 1930
Father(?) DLOOGACH
JOSEPH "George" (GERSHON) HORWITZ (DLOOGACH) ALVIN HORWITZ told me his name was not really George, it was JOSEPH, but he went by George. And SAMUEL E HORWITZ's death certificate backs this up ("Father's Name: Joseph Horwitz"). Gershon is another name he went by, Hebrew equivalent for George.

According to my (Alvy 3) wife, he came from southern Russia, border of Turkey. He lived in Italy for a while. When he entered the country, officials changed his name from Deluggage (or Delukitch, or something like that) to Horwitz. He is Sephardic.

Letter from Ron Howard (Horwitz) to Al and Bert Horwitz, 13 Aug 1986:

"Booba (Bessie Braunstein) was born in Kiev (about 1871) With a name like Braunstein, it seems to me her ancestry must have come from Germany. One brother was Hymie who had only one son (Irving Bernstein - he changed his name). My mom didn't know the name of another brother, but I believe it was Ike, who had 2 sons and 1 daughter (Beatrice), the one you reached in Syracuse.

George Horwitz (Gershon) was born in Roumania near the Russian border. My father used to laugh over a name change from "Dloogach" but he was serious when he spoke of a cousin with that name. So it very well may have been Dloogach before Horwitz. (I suppose they took Horwitz because it is such a good American name!).

The oldest brother was Chaim. His only child was Louis Horwitz whom I knew well and admired. Louis was a Shakespearean scholar, self taught. He married Rose and they had 7 children (3 daughters, 4 sons). (Leah, Mildred (Mickey) Abrams & Edith, Ed, Dan, Victor and Leonard

The next brother, Schlome, had six children: Sarah Harry, Frieda Shaw, Sam (Aunt Ray's husband), Elsie Felder and Ida

Gershon fathered: Rachel, Anna, Samuel, Harry* (died in infancy) Celia* (died as a little girl), Mary, Victor and Morris (the last 2 born in Syracuse because Booba had left Gershon to live with her parents, but he followed her there. They later returned to Cleveland. He was a "Momma's boy." Any money he made (very little) he gave to his mother. You may recall a photo of Booba's mother with a turned mouth. That happened when she fell down the steps carrying Aunt Ray who was then an infant.

*Booba said there was a fire and she gathered her children up. In the excitement, she dropped Harry in the snow. He got pneumonia & died. Booba said Gershon had a violent temper, as you no doubt heard. She said he stepped on Celia's back and she developed spinal meningitis. Who knows? According to Aunt Ray, Booba used to agitate Gershon & rub him the wrong way. I do know that the older children, incluidng your father, took him to court when they were still minor's, for non support. With all this they gave him every respect when he was ill (Aunt Ray took care of him at her house - cancer) & when he died they buried him next to a brother - his wish.

There was a 4th brother who lived in an insane assylum (Perhaps Gershon belonged there also). He was unmarried. His name ???

Booba was 8 when she came here ..." JOSEPH was born at near "Russian" border, Romania, circa 1860. Samuel Horwitz death certificate says Russia..3,4,2 He married BESSIE BROWNSTEIN (BRAUNSTEIN) at Cleveland, Cuyahoga, Ohio, USA, on 29 May 1887.5,6 JOSEPH filed for divorce from BESSIE BROWNSTEIN (BRAUNSTEIN) at Cleveland, Cuyahoga, Ohio, USA, in April 1908.5 JOSEPH died on 9 November 1930.7 His body was interred on 10 November 1930.4

BESSIE BROWNSTEIN (BRAUNSTEIN)1,2,3

F, b. circa 1871, d. 1951
Father(?) BRAUNSTEIN
BESSIE BROWNSTEIN (BRAUNSTEIN) Related to me (Alvy (3) Ray Smith) by her grandson Alvin Horwitz: After her divorce, she married a Mr. Goldfaden through an arranged marriage with a marriage broker (orthodox jewish). They lived in Norwich CT and ran a junkyard.

Goldfaden's daughter (by a previous marriage) married a Mr. Land, father of Edwin Land, founder of Polaroid. So, Edwin Land's grandmother married my (Alvy Ray Smith) wife's great grandmother.
Mr. Land, Edwin's father, helped the Goldfadens run the junkyard business.

From "Land's Polaroid: A Company and the Man Who Invented It" by Peter C. Wensberg (Houghton Miflin, Boston, 1987), p 20: "Edwin Herbert Land was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, a cradle of American industry, on May 7, 1909, to Harry and Martha Land. He went to Bridgeport public schools until his family moved to nearby Norwich .... His father had a prosperous salvage and scrap metal business ..."

Alvin met Edwin Land himself during the war. He was then involved in building bombsites for the military, but he explained plans for Polaroid to Alvin and offered him the opportunity to order some of its stock when it issued. The price was $5 per share, with a minimum order of 100 shares. Alvin had absolutely no money at the time, but figures he would easily be a millionaire now if he could have invested $500 then.

BESSIE was known as "Booba" by her grandchildren. BESSIE was born at Kiev (Kviv), Kyyv, Ukraine, circa 1871. Samuel Horwitz death certificate says "Russia".4,3,5 BESSIE immigrated, circa 1879.
