SAMUEL PARROTT1,2,3

M, d. before 1728
SAMUEL PARROTT The following is from notes obtained from Arlien Sifleet (Mrs. Alexander Corwin Sifleet, 95 Fairmount Avenue, Chatham, NJ). The notes were sent to my mother Edith Smith (her niece) and then passed to me several years later.

"In memory of Wm Parrot and Abigail his wife, son of Sam. Parrot of Elizabethtown. He was born there 9/19/1714 & was one of the 1st settlers in this locality. Lived near (now) Union Village where he d. 11/1784. It is believed he & his wife were buried in neighboring Pres. Church yard, with which church he was actively identified - erected 1911 by a great grandson."

We do not know where this inscription is located nor who the great grandson is.

Another item of hers is:

"Eleanor Parrot ... was d. Sam Parrott of Troy (s. Sam Parrot of Elizabethtown N.J. who was of Eliz - as early as 1704 & who has the record of births & deaths in his family now being in possession of Mrs. Mary Smith, Troy Hills N.J. stating his oldest child was born there) born in Eliz 10/8/1716 d. in Troy 11/29/1788 & Eleanor Alling d. & only child of Joseph Alling but traditionally earlier of Eliz."

This places SAM PARROTT in Elizabethtown in 1704.

Parritt Homestead:

"In 1745 Eleanor married Samuel Parrit, born October 8 1716 second son of Samuel Parrit by his second wife, of Elizabethtown. There is a book still in existence, now owned by Miss Mary Smith, a descendant, which belonged to Samuel Parrit Sr. in 1704, and in which he recorded the births and deaths of his two children by his first wife, her death, his second marriage, and the births of his seven children, two girls and five boys."

This is the first strong evidence that he had two wives. It also implies that WILLIAM b 1714 was SAMUEL's first son by his second wife.

The LDS evidence for Sarah Darling gives her birth date as abt 1728. This means that SAMUEL's wife married Mr Darling before then. So presumably she was widowed by SAMUEL, which therefore establishes a limit to his deathdate. However, several references speak of SAMUEL marrying the "widow Darling". This is confusing. If indeed he married an already widowed "widow Darling" in 1713, then Sarah Darling could not have been born in 1728. I will assume for now that the LDS evidence is inaccurate.

Another Arlien Sifleet note, p 6:

"N. J. Historical Society
...
New Sec - Vol.4 - 1919 P. 128-
"Thus runs the deed for "[Beverwyck]" --
...--On the s. by lands now & lately owned
by. Robt Ogden, Benj. Smith, Benj. Howell, & Sam'l Parrott."

This appears to strongly connect Robert Ogden and Samuel Parrott, who were contemporaries in Elizabethtown.

For what it's worth, Aunt Arlien has this conjecture on P 8R:

"I believe that the Parrots originally came from Connecticutt."

I have tentatively assigned the following children to SAMUEL because they all appear in a single list in Arlien Sifleet's notes, all from a single church, Whippany Presbyterian Church, and all at approximately the same time [the ? entries we are the tentative ones]:

Sarah Darling m ca 1749 [from previous marriage]
Samuel Parrott m bef 1749
WILLIAM PARROTT m bef 1760
?Richard m bef 1761
?Mary m 1755
?Phebe m 1753
?John m 1765
?Martha m 1765

From Parrott Talk Trilogy, p 108, comes this (new to me) information about SAMUEL PARROTT:

"Samuel PARROT, md (1) _____________, (2) Dec 17, 1713, the widow DARLING. He died July 17, 1713 (?) [1713 underlined, clearly this does not make sense given the the m2 date].

Issue (by first wife):
John, born presumably not in Elizabethtown May 12 1703.
Martha, born March 10, 1704 in Elizabethtown. Lived ____ months 4 days.
Samuel, born December 1706. Died May 1, 1715.

Issue (by second wife):
William, born Sept 19, 1714. Died November 14, 1784 (New Providence), md. Abigail (SHIPMAN) CLARK.
Samuel, born Oct 8, 1716.
Thomas, born July 18, 1719.
Richard, born March 3, 1720/21.
Mary, born Oct 31, 1723.
Martha, born Sept 12, 1726. Md. 1738 (sic) David LOCEY.
(The dates of birth of the above are from a copy of the record of the births made by Samuel PARROT, in possession of Raymond T. PARROTT of Summit, New Jersey.)"

This matches quite well, except for ?Phebe, the tentative tree I had put together from other sources which would look like this before the new information:

Samuel PARROTT, b bef 1704, md (1) _________, (2) the woman who would become Mrs DARLING (ie, I have her widowed by PARROTT). He died bef 1728.

Issue (by first wife):
Child 1
Child 2

Issue (by second wife):

Parrott Talk Trilogy:

"The earliest known of the New Jersey Parrott's was Samuel PARROT of Elizabethtown. It is not known whether he was directly an immigrant from England or France, or whether he came to Elizabethtown by way of Massachusetts or Philadelphia. At early times the name PAROT, PARRAT, PARRET, and PERIT are found in both these localities."

Also:

"The early genealogy of the PARROTT family seems at the present almost impossible to trace. They are of Huguenot descent and there is a tradition that they went to France to England on the revocation of the Edict of Nantes. Another tradition has it that one of the family was a very beautiful woman who became a member of the household of the Queen of England. (Newark Evening News N. J. Genealogy #3103).

SAMUEL was born. He married [Parrott wife 1] (?) before 12 May 1703.4,3 SAMUEL PARROTT Sam'l Parrat is menitioned in long list of persons with debts paid from the estate of Samuel Shepherd. Woodbridge is near Elizabethtown, near the south end of Staten Island (but on the mainland).

Mr Shepherd appears to have been a wealthy man. A thought is that he might have been instrumental in bringing a group of people from England, perhaps including Huguenots such as Samuel Parrott. Just theorizing. on 7 December 1709 at Woodbridge, Middlesex, New Jersey, USA.5 He married [Widow Darling = PARROTT WIFE 2] (?) on 17 December 1713.3 SAMUEL PARROTT mentions 18 acres bought of Samuel Parrett on 14 November 1715 at Elizabethtown, Essex, New Jersey, USA.6 He Mary Parratt is witness to will of Joseph Marsh, along with Samuel Whitehead and Mary Whitehead on 17 August 1722 at Elizabethtown, Essex, New Jersey, USA.7 SAMUEL died before 1728.8
