Webb 1993 has "Angeline married Dr. Goddard." No question mark. She married Dr (?) Goddard.3 Angeline was born at Texas, USA, circa 1860.1,3

"The Moore family was of the Catholic faith.

John Lego married Ellen Evelyn Casey, a noted Southwestern author, who wrote very detailed books about her life. ROBERT CASEY AND THE RANCH ON THE RIO HONDO, and MY GILRHOOD AMONG THE OUTLAWS. They settled in Toyah, TX. From a publication by Alton Hughes in 1978, PECOS, A HISTORY OF THE PIONEER WEST, The Pioneer Book Publishers, Box 426, Seagraves, TX 79359, there is an excellent biography about the Moore and Casey families on pp. 309-313 with photo illustrations.

John Lego and Ellen had 5 boys: Tatum, W. E., Albert and James who died as an infant as did the first born whose name we do not know.

John was orphaned at an early age and was reared by his older sisters. Sometime in 1884 he helped drive a cattle herd to Toyah, TX where he settled. He collected some cattle and horses and ran a store in Toyah. Eh met Evelyn in 1886 when she became governess for the Tinnins. After John's death 7 Aug 1907, Ellen and the boys continued to operate their ranch about 3 miles northeast of Balmorhea, TX. In 1917 the Moore estate contained 7 and one-half sections of grazing land, 1,108 acres of irrigable land, 500 head of cattle, 100 head of horses and many farm implements, pretty good for an orphan." John was born at Brown, Texas, USA, on 11 January 1865.2,1 He married Ellen Evelyn Casey on 12 May 1889.2,3 John died on 7 August 1907 at Reeves, Texas, USA, at age 42.2,1 His body was interred at Pecos, Reeves, Texas, USA.2

"Will Book B, p. 109, 18 Oct 1823, recorded 26 Jan 1824. Names wife Anne Shaw. Children mentioned but not all named. Daughter Elizabeth, Sons John Shaw of Clermont County, Ohio and Robert Shaw of Campbell County. Executors, sons John and Robert. Witnesses, Solomon Trusdell and Jacob Trusdell."

"Came to America about 1770-1771 at age 15 (to York Co., Pennsylvania). When Revolutionary War broke out, he enlisted in the army under Lafayette, serving throughout the war. Brought his wife and family to Alexandria (Campbell Co., KY) in 1795 where he secured and improved considerable wild land. Served under General Neville and was at Trenton, Germantown, and Brandywine. In 1790 moved to Limestone, now Maysville, KY. Five years later to Campbell County, KY. He is listed in the DAR (Daughters of the American Revolutionary Patriotic Index, 1966.

The DAR record Sheet for Helen Armacost Stoecklin (one of James' descendants) says: James Shaw, born 1757, Ireland, from York, PA, married Anna Jolly. He served in Revolutionary war as a private in the Pennsylvania line in the company commanded by Capt. David Grier, of the regiment commanded by Col. Irvin. He also served under Capt. John Lord (or Lard) and Capt. John Sherrer. He served as an Indian spy."

I have not been able to reconcile these two very different descriptions of his service. See the item below from "History of Clermont Co OH" for support of the former description. I have been able to find a James Shaw from York Co PA who satisfies the second description above, but am not convinced he is our JAMES SHAW.

Also from Boyd:

"James was bound out at age 15 coming alone to America in about 1770. The family he was bound to settled in York Co., PA.

Enlisted as a private in Captain David Grier's company, Colonel Irvine's Pennsylvania regiment from York Co., PA, 4 Jan 1776. Went north in the invasion of Canada and fought in the battle of Three Rivers where 23 soldiers of his company were captured. He was wounded in the right hip. Retreated to Albany NY where he spent time in a hospital until his discharge in Dec 1776. He later served one tour of two months as a volunteer and one tour of two months as a substitute and was involved in the battles of Brandywine and Germantown. [so this description bridges both]

After his marriage the family moved to Westmoreland County, PA in December 1779. James again entered the service as a lieutenant and Indian spy and continued in such service until the end of the war (SHA-3 [I believe this cited source is "James Shaw, Campbell County, Kentucky", Margaret Strebel Hartman, self-published, 1962, Newport, KY, FHL 1,033,960, pt. 8]

The Shaw family moved to Limestone (now Maysville), KY in 1796, but shortly after settled near Alexandria, Campbell Co, KY where he secured and improved considerable wild land. He and was [sic] listed in 1800 as a taxpayer (1 Sep) from Campbell Co., KY. They were the only Shaws in county. Appointed Surveyor of the road from Mrs. Stevenses to the sag on the ridge on the Washington Road in the room and precinct of Timothy Raredon. Ordered that he keeps the same in repair according to law. Newport, Campbell County Court Order Book A, p. 262, June 1801. Others were called to help. p. 265, July 1801.

Purchased from Benjamin Beall, 382 3/4 acres being on Wells Creek (aka 12 Mile Creek). Campbell County Deed Book C, p. 193, 30 Sep 1807. Witnessed by John Shaw.

His home was near Robert Shaw.

Maintained Reuben Blanchard, orphan, four months and 10 days at $15 per month by order of Campbell County Court. Paid $65 and $15 for funeral expenses.

James completed papers for a Revolutionary War pension in 24 Jul 1822 but they were never submitted. He lists his estate as 300 acres of hilly land worth not more than $100. 1 horese ($25), 3 cows ($15), 10 sheep ($5), 6 hogs ($6), 2 bears ($20), household and kitchen utensels ($15), 1 plough ($2), 1 axe ($1), 3 hoes ($1); total $190 (SHA-3 [see above])."

History of Clermont Co OH, p 400:

"In this neighborhood also settled about the same time John Shaw, who was born in York Co., Pa., July 15, 1779. His father was James Shaw, who did valiant service in the Revolution, serving under Gen. Neville, and was at Trenton, Germantown, and Brandywine. In 1790 he moved with his family to Maysville, Ky., and five years later to Campbell County, of the same State, about three miles west of New Richmond, where he opened a large farm and lived until his death. Of his six sons, John, the eldest, purchased a tract of land in Ohio about 1800, having been led to see its beauty and fertility before the country was settled, while hunting on this side of the river. ... [See son John for more of this reference]"

NB, "three miles west of New Richmond [Clermont Co, OH]" is about halfway between New Richmond OH and Alexandria KY [Campbell Co], just over the Ohio River in KY.

Maureen Webb 1993:

"Annie [SHAW] had an aunt, Jane Shaw, who married Jonathan Riggs. Jonathan was a General in the War of 1812. Annie's father, James Shaw was b PA and d in TX. His father was James Shaw, his mother was Anna." [Jonathan got his generalship in the Black Hawk War, not 1812]

The 1800 Westmoreland Co PA Census has this entry:

This means 1M 26-<45, 3F <10, 1F 16-<26. Our JAMES was supposedly in KY by 1800. This data doesn't fit very well anyway, except for him; he would have been 43 in 1800. Supposing his son JAMES had stayed in PA, then his age in 1800 would be 19 and his wife 15, so it is unlikely that this entry was for him either. The following puts JAMES (Sr) in KY in 1800.

From our other data, in 1810, we would have JAMES aged 53, ANNA 51, JAMES 29, Jane 23, John abt 21, Elizabeth abt 6, plus 4 other F and 3 other M children. It is probably safe to assume that JAMES, Jane and John have left home, and perhaps several others. This would leave at most 5F and 3M at home. The data above shows 4F and 2M at home in addition to the parents.

For future reference, we note that there is a Robert Shaw family in the same county as James Shaw in the 1810 Census.

The DAR Lineage evidence gives it as 1758, Ireland.

When Cornwallis advanced into N.C he took his Comp^y into the field to harrass the rear of the British army until it crossed the Yadkin.

Boyd Genealogy:

"While a resident of Morris County, NJ, he enlisted in 1776 and served at various times, amounting to five months in all, as a private in Captain Jared Condict's company in Colonel Ford's New Jersey regiment. He then went to Wilkes County, NC and served as Lieutenant with NC troops under Captain Benjamin Cleveland and when Captain Cleveland was wounded, he took his place as Captain. Was in the battle of Ramsour's Mill and arrived at the battle of King's Mountain at the close of the battle and assisted in guarding the prisoners taken there. His entire service as a Captain amounted to 18 months. There is no official record of his service." [cited source is RIG-3 which I believe is: "History of the Baptists in Missouri, R S Duncan, Scammell & Co, St Louis, FHL 6,049,699, pp 84, 214, 219-220.]

Problems with the accounts above: Benjamin Cleveland was a Captain until 1778 when he became a Colonel, although Col Benjamin Cleveland was indeed at Ramsour's Mill in 1780. Notice that the pension file entry does not give the first name of "Capt. Cleveland". I suspect that this is Benjamin's brother Larkin, who was wounded on the Cawtawba. However, the history I am reading gives Larkin's rank as Lt not Capt. One thing is very clear, however: Col Benjamin Cleveland was very much in the heat of battle at King's Mountain and was not wounded and nobody took his place. There WERE many Tory prisoners taken after the King's Mountain battle and they had to be guarded and moved, so this part of BETHUEL's story makes sense.

The "Moravian" towns are Salem, Bethabara, and Bathania NC, all now parts of Winston-Salem, NC. The Moravians are a religious sect originally from Europe.

The court-martial referred to in the pension file is the controversial one held 14 Oct 1780 at Bickerstaff's on the march of the prisoners from King's Mountain to Salem. About 30 were condemned and 9 actually executed, just after the trial. Col Benjamin Cleveland was a leader in this event. A Tory diary entry of the event describes the executions as "a sacrifice to their infamous mock jury".

"At the age of eighteen, Bethuel Riggs was converted to Christ and became a Baptist. After the Revolutionary War he moved to Georgia, where he lived for some years. There he began his ministry; traveling and preaching extensively. Long before that state was densely populated he traveled from settlement to settlement and preached to poor sinners, warning them with tears in his eyes to flee the wrath to come.

While still a young man, he, in company with a large colony, came across the Indian country to Kentucky. The trip was made during the early Indian wars. While crossing the mountains and the unsettled portions of country, the emmigrants were in great peril. But they used every precaution and were watchful and vigilant, and finally reached Kentucky in safety. Bethuel settled in Campbell County opposite the city of Cincinnati, Ohio.

1800 taxpayer (1 Sep) for Campbell Co., Ky. Only Riggs in the county.

While living in this place a somewhat rare incident occurred in his life. There were some restrictions in the territorial laws concerning marriage. One day a couple came to his house wishing to be married. Owing to the above named restrictions they could not be married in the territory. An expedient was thought of, which was to get into their canoes and go out into the river. And this they did, and when about midway in the Ohio River, Elder Riggs married them, and they went on their way happy.

In 1809 he came to Missouri and first settled on Dardenne Creek, in St. Charles County, where he lived for eight years. He then moved north and settled north of Troy, Missouri, by the Sulpher Lick Spring. This spring possessed some excellent medical qualities. Here he organized Sulpher Lick Church and served as pastor several years. He spent much of his time itinerating, preaching over large portions of Lincoln and adjoining counties. Later he moved to Monroe County, where he lived for awhile preaching in the settlements in the Salt River country. From there he moved to Illinois, to Ohio and finally back again to Missouri. He was buried by the side of his wife in Lincoln County.

A 1821 taxpayer Bedford Twnship (SW corner of county), Lincoln Co., MO.

Bethuel was a delegate to the first meeting of the Missouri Baptist Association on 24 Oct 1818. He was elected to the Board of Managers of the "United Society for the Spread of the Gospel" to set up missions and schools for both whites and indians in the west. The meeting was in St. Charles County, MO.

Sulpher Lick Baptist Church was organized eight or nine miles NW of Troy, MO by Elder Bethuel Riggs, in his own private house near a large spring called Sulphur Lick, close to the north fork of the Cuivre River in the year 1823. There were four original members. Stout's Settlement Baptist Church in Lincoln County was organized 16 Jun 1821 by Elders Bethuel Riggs and Jesse Sitton (Lincoln Co. History, p. 475). "The following information from: C. Ray Riggs [address], 1980:

N J Publications B, Vol 2 Lists Bethuel Riggs buried in Hamilton Co., OH. American Publications B, Vol 1 p 231, N J; Vol 2 p 97; Vol 78 p 73. N J Sec. in Court Records 1780 on KY in the Campbell Co., N C Library.

Bethuel enlisted in 1776 in N J, moved to Wilkes Co., N C and was with the Kings Mountain Men in the War of 1812. He was over 60 yrs old."

This is partially correct. He enlisted in 1776 in NJ, moved to Wilkes Co NC and fought in the Battle of Kings Mountain (in the Rev War!)

Pioneer Families of MO, p 182:

"...Rev. Bethel Riggs, a baptist preacher, of Campbell Co., Ky. In 1812 he removed to Missouri, and settled within the present limits of Lincoln county; and in 1813 he organized the Sulphur Springs Baptist Church. His son Jonathan married Jane Shaw, of Campbell Co., Ky., and they had ten children - Samuel, Franklin, Tucker, Clinton, Nancy, Epsy, Lucinda, Matilda, Eliza, and Sally. Samuel was killed in Texas, by a runaway team. Franklin died in Wisconsin. Tucker lives in California. Clinton lived in Louisiana, Mo. Nancy married James Shaw. Epsy married Eli H. Perkins. Lucinda married a lawyer, named Raymond. Matilda married John Massey. Eliza married John Mitchell. Sally married Daniel Draper. ..."

The line on back from here needs to be independently validated. It now depends solely on family records at the LDS familysearch site.

From Revolutionary War, Official Roster of the State Troops and Militia (Stryker, p 407):

"RIGGS, BETHUEL. Private, militia; Captain, ditto."

Thus he was ultimately a Captain of the Morris Co Militia during the Revolutionary War.

Bethuel Riggs was a Captain in the Revolutionary War. He applied for his pension on 27 Aug 1832 from Hamilton Co. Ohio.

He was also a Baptist Minister. His Grand-daughter Olive Webb Trail was quoted in the "Missouri Baptist Biography",vol. IV, pp 245-47 (pub 1919) saying that Bethuel Riggs assisted in organizing the Sulfur Lick Baptist Church in Lincoln, Missouri.

Rev. Bethuel RIGGS, born 13 Dec 1757, Mendom Township, Morris Co, New Jersey (father: Isaac RIGGS, mother: Mary PIERCE), married abt 1778 Nancy LEE, and died 25 Jul 1835, Lincoln Co, Missouri. I pasted together this biography from several sources but most of it is from a book on early Baptist ministers of Missouri. "FOUR-MILE & TWELVE-MILE BAPTIST CHURCH, CAMPBELL CO, KENTUCKY

Two early Baptist churches in Campbell County were served by pioneer preacher Brother Bethuel Riggs. In 1799, he served Four-Mile Baptist Church located near today's town of Camp Springs. A record book held by the First 12-Mile Baptist Church revealed...

The Baptist Church constituted at Brother Bethuel Riggs on 4-Mile Road on this 28th of December 1799 to be called 4-Mile Baptist.[1]

In 1817, John Stevens was minister of Four-Mile Church; the following year, he served at First 12-Mile Church organized on September 18, 1818. The original church and cememtery were located on an island in 12-Mile Creek. Most of the Island Cemetery's gravemarkers have been washed away in flooding of the Ohio River. A second cemetery was located on a hilltop behind the church. This hilltop cemetery was in use until 1927; its oldest marker was dated 1827.
     
It well may be our early Herbert and Spaulding ancestors were buried in the two cemeteries since both families belonged to each church. Both Josiah Herbert and Aaron Spaulding became members at Four-Mile; but Aaron Spaulding and his family later moved to Twelve-Mile near today's town of California, Kentucky. The church at Four-Mile no longer exists; First Twelve-Mile can be visited and is designated a "Ky. State Historic Site."

The present 12-Mile Church is located on Twelve Mile-Oneonta Road, California, Kentucky, on the site of a structure built in 1836. Membership lists of 4-Mile Church date from 1814 to 1820; while 12-Mile Church date from 1825 to 1933. The two church membership lists gives insight into our extended family's residence and dates of church attendance]:

So Bethuel performed marriages, after 1811, in Mason Co, KY. He may have lived there too. Mason Co is deduced from the entries on either side of this one. The following is probably the info on which this is based (to within a misspelling):

NB, Mason Co KY is separated from OH by the river. Campbell Co KY and Hamilton Co OH lie across the river from one another (and Cincinatti is in Hamilton Co). Mason Co is 2-3 counties east on the river from Campbell Co.

1810 Campbell Co KY Census has:

Our other data would have BETHUEL, in 1810, aged 53, NANCY aged abt 50, Jane abt 30, Elizabeth abt 28, MARY abt 25, Jonathan 21, Peggy abt 20, Sarah abt 18, Rebecca abt 16 or 17, Samuel abt 14, Nathaniel 11. Assuming all children above 19 have left home, the census gives 2M and 3F still at home (plus 1 older male = ?). Our data gives, in addition to the parents, 2F and 2M possibly still at home.

For future reference, we note that the 1810 census lists the following Riggs families in the same county as Bethuel:

James, John, and Lanathan [could this be Jonathan?] Riggs.

NJ Genesis, Oct 1968, p 681:

Revolutionary Soldiers in Hamilton County, Ohio, Robert D Craig, p 29:

"BETHUEL RIGGS
Born in 1757 in Morris Co, N.J. and entered the service in 1776 as a drafted soldier under Col Ford to guard military stores at Old Red Stone Fort. Was sent to N.C. and was at the battle of Ramsour Mills 20 June 1780. Riggs was regularly appointed Captain and marched with his command to King's Mountain, in the battle of 7 Oct 1780. After the war he became a prominent Baptist preacher and itinerant through N.C., Penn, Ky, Missouri, and Ohio. He died in Anderson Township in 1835."

There is not a Redstone VA that I could find. However, there is a Redstone TN, located right on the border with VA. This record for BETHUEL in VA appears in no other that I have found, so this might not be our BETHUEL. On the other hand, his Rev War whereabouts are known in 1776 and 1780, so this 1778 appearance is not inconsistent with what else is known. The record does read, however, as if he were sent from NJ to NC. No mention is made of his stopping in VA. Futhermore, this is a militia listing, not a Continental Army listing.

Note, also curiously, that BETHUEL's pension file mentions his duty: "Entered the Service in fall 1776 as a drafted soldier in N.J. under Capt Condict & Coln. Ford guarding military stores at old Red Stone fort for a short time then went to Wilkes Co NC in the fall of 1776". This Red Stone fort appears to be in NJ! I'm confused.

I have found a mention of an old Red Stone Fort on the internet at: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~morgansociety/david.htm which places it near the home of the Morgans who settled north of Trenton, on the Delaware, in what is now Hunterdon Co NJ.

I note that the Boyd genealogy refers to LDS Ancestral File # 1DXG-G3, which is the same as I refer to here by Bethuel-Nancy Riggs, Family Group Sheet, downloaded from www.familysearch.org.

The King's Mountain Men, p 242:
"Riggs. Bethiel was born at Towbridge, New Jersey, 1757, and enlisted in that state, 1776. He moved to Wilkes county, North Carolina, and took Cleveland's place at King's Mountain, when the latter was wounded. After the battle his company guarded the prisoners to the Moravian town. He was a Baptist minister."

This is the first mention I've seen of Towbridge NJ, which I cannot find, but presumably in Morris Co. The Cleveland he replaced would probably be Larkin Cleveland, known to have been injured. P 159 of the reference above has this to say about him:

"Larkin [Cleveland] was a brother to Benjamin [well-known], and while on his way to King's Mountain encountered a party of tories at Loveday Shoals and was wounded."

There seems to be a bit of confusion between all these references to King's Mountain, perhaps because there were so many relatives of Col Benjamin Cleveland also in the battle. There is no record that Col Cleveland was wounded. Since he was so prominent in the battle, it is unlikely that any such wounding would have gone undocumented. Larkin, his brother, was a Lt, not a Capt. There was a Capt Robert Cleveland, another brother but I do not see that he was wounded. Here is yet another story of Lt Larkin Cleveland's wounding. He is almost certainly the person BETHUEL replaced, but of course this does not justify BETHUEL's being named Capt.

King's Mountain and Its Heroes, 185:

"But a worse accident befell Lieutenant Larkin Cleveland, a younger brother of the Colonel. It was some ten miles from Crider's Fort, crossing the Brushy mountain, to Lovelady's Ford of the Catawba. While crossing the river, Lieutenant Cleveland, with the advance, after having passed a narrow defile between a rocky cliff and the stream, was shot by some concealed Tories in the cliff, severely wounding him in the thigh. The Loyalists had learned of Colonel Cleveland's march, and had resolved on his destruction, hoping thereby to cripple the expedition and possibly defeat its object. Colonel Cleveland and his brother very much resembled each other in size and general appearance; and the Tories probably mistook the latter for the Colonel. ... Though he in time recovered, he was a cripple for life."

Also, 375:

" "The victory at King's Mountain, " observes Bancroft [from his History of the United States, x, 340], "which in the spirit of the American soldiers was like the rising at Concord, in its effects like the success at Bennington, changed the aspects of the war. The Loyalists of North Carolina no longer dared to rise. It fired the patriots of the two Carolinas with fresh zeal. It encouraged the fragments of the defeated and scattered American army to seek each other, and organize themselves anew. It quickened the North Carolina Legislature to earnest efforts. It encouraged Virginia to devote her resources to the country south of her border. The appearance on the frontiers of a numerous enemy from settlements beyond the mountains, whose very names had been unknown to the British, took Cornwallis by surprise, and their success was fatal to his intended expedition. He had hoped to step with ease from one Carolina to the other, and from those to the conquest of Virginia; and he had now no choice but to retreat." "

Curious note: Early Ohio Settlers: Purchasers of Land in Southwestern Ohio, 1800-1840, 272:

[purchaser] Riggs, Bethuel (B) an unknown date 1836 [date] Dec. 08 [residence] Dearborn (Ind [R T S = range township section] 02 03 18"

But our BETHUEL d bef 1836, so who is this Bethuel? NB Dearborn Co IN is just across the stateline from Hamilton Co OH (where BETHUEL is buried). The (B) after Bethuel above refers to the IN counties in which he purchased land.

Are we sure BETHUEL d bef 1836?

"Left a wife Susannah and children who were not named. His wife and brother James Shaw were his executors. Witness to the will were John T. Overall and Napoleon B. Shaw on 11 Apr 1842.

Bethuel's brother that was mentioned in his will was James Shaw Jr."

"On the 1850 Census, a son of James Shaw Jr is shown as Bethuee, born in 1842, the same years as Bethuel's death. I believe that Bethuel's widow Susannah married Bethuel's brother Napoleon around 1843. Napoleon's 1850 Census record makes sense if you attribute the first four children to an earlier marriage." Bethuel was born at Campbell, Kentucky, USA, on 1 November 1809. Some sources give OH, which doesn't make much sense, but I am not convinced of Campbell Co KY either. At least it is consistent with parent's marriage place..4 He married Susanna (or Susan) Smith at Lincoln, Missouri, USA, on 10 March 1832.5,6,7 Bethuel was listed as the head of a family on the in 1840 Census at Lincoln, Missouri, USA.8 He made a will at Lincoln, Missouri, USA, on 20 October 1842.3 Bethuel died on 16 March 1844 at age 34. Syrett gives before [will of] 20 Oct 1842, but this doesn't make sense.4,3

"SHAW, JAMES - Born in Clermont County, Ohio, August 8, 1808. In Headright Certificate No. 2 issued to him in 1838 by the Board of Land Commissioners for Brazoria County for one league and one labor of land it is simply state that he came to Texas before march 2, 1836. In the 1874 Year Book of the Texas Veterans Association, of which he was a member, it is stated that he arrived in Texas in 1835.

Mr. Shaw was a member of Captain William H Smith's Cavalry Company at San Jacinto and on May 24, 1838, was issued Donation Certificate No. 621 for having participated in the battle. On April 10, 1838 he was issued Bounty Certificate No. 2828 for 320 acres of land for having served in the army from March 7 to August 4, 1836. Sometime after the battle he was promoted to First Lieutenant of the Company.

Mr. Shaw served as a member of the House of Representatives in the Second Legislature representing Milam County and in the Third and Fifth from Burleson County. He was a Senator in the Six, Seventh and Eighth Congresses from the district composed of Milam and Robertson Counties. In 1855 he was elected to the Senate of the Legislature from the district composed of Burleson and Brazos Counties.

Mr. Shaw was married to Nancy A. Riggs. Their children were (1) Frank, (2) Sophia, and (3) Travis Shaw.

Mrs. Nancy Riggs Shaw, wife of James Shaw the San Jacinto veteran, was born May 18, 1811, and died at Lexington, Texas, August 8, 1877. Mr. Shaw was next married to a Mrs. Kray a widow and to this union was born one child, William Guthrie Shaw, who now lives in San Antonio. Mr. James Shaw died February 14, 1879, and was buried by the side of his first wife in the Early Chapel Cemetery near Lexington, Lee County, Texas. Mr. Shaw was a member of the Texas Veterans Association. Mrs. Shaw and her son by her first marriage, James Kray, were living at La Grange in 1905. The following was published in the Galveston Gazette, January 13, 1864:

[Following this is a newspaper transcription of an article by James Shaw describing the "brutal murder" of his son Frank Shaw, on 3 Nov 1863 by "Federal troops" in LA in the morning of the Borbeaux battle, at Bayou Borbeaux.]"

He represented MILAM COUNTY in the Third and Fifthe COngresses, and later in the Senate of the Republic. He was a farmer and planter and spent the last years of his life at Lexington in what had been originally Washington County, where he died on February 14, 1879."

These are two different James Shaws. The first is the son of John; the second is the son of John's brother, JAMES SHAW.

This implies James Shaw (Jr) was b ca 1808 OH and married Nancy in Lincoln Co. He must have almost immediately moved to TX because Franklin b ca 1838 TX.

Notice that James is living near Joseph b ca 1825 MO and that JAMES SHAW b 1781 PA, is living with him. I am convinced this is our JAMES SHAW because of the birthplace and date match and because we know that JAMES died in Burleson Co TX. So he would be living with his nephew, son of his brother John Shaw.

I believe Joseph is JAMES's son, cousin to James.

I believe this James Shaw was b ca 1808 OH m 15 Aug 1837 Nancy Riggs b ca 1811 MO; they had children Franklin b ca 1838 TX, Sophronia b ca 1840 TX and Travis b ca 1842 TX.

The 1880 listing is for a young James Shaw 24 m Martha 24, Thomas Shaw 20 is in the same household. James and Thomas are brothers whose father was born in New Mexico. I have not yet [Feb 2002] placed these two.

One of my sources lists these as children of James Shaw and Nancy Riggs: Ann, Samuel, Smith, Eliza, William, Martha, Susannah, Ibby. I can find no supporting evidence for these children, except perhaps William. James had a son William by a second wife.

"Adeline Shaw, one of Uncle Jimmie's daughters, married John Roff. He went to California at an early date and was lost from his family for over 20 years. Adeline, having concluded that he was dead, married George Clair. By George Clair, Adeline had one son, named Orried B. Clair. After Orried had grown to be several years old, John Roff suddenly returned and claimed his wife. George Clair, who was a Catholic, and a good man, at once left for parts unknown, and so far as the family is concerned was never heard of afterwards. Adeline Roff moved to Bastrop in Lee County, this State, where she lived and died. Orrie B. Clair came to Grayson County when a young man and married Viola webb, one of Uncle Cyrus's daughters. By Orrie, she raised a large family and passed on. Claire died just a few years ago in Wichita Falls, Texas."
