ELIZABETH C "Betsy" BELLENFANT Bellenfant Family:

"Elizabeth C. "Betsie" Bellenfant, b. 29 Mar 1787 Va. (twin), d. 30 Dec 1870 Giles Co., Tn. m. 26 Mar 1806, Rockingham Co., N.C. Willaim Thomas Sanders, b. July 1783, N.C., d. Nov 1874; both bu. in Giles Co. At a time when people were migrating from one part of the country to another and traveling much of the time by wagon, it is said that Elizabeth and her family traveled from Rockingham Co., N.C. to Middle Tennessee by carriage! In Goodspeed's History of Tennessee (Giles Co.) p. 868 Vol. 4, it was stated that William and Elizabeth, both natives of N.C., came to Tenn. in 1812, locating in Williamson Co., where they stayed for a few years, then moved to Giles County where Elizabeth died in 1872 and William Died 4 years later."

The Mary Louise Russell evidence has a marginal note by her name: "Joe Wilkinson Ancestor". ELIZABETH was born at Halifax, Virginia, USA, on 29 March 1787.3,4,5,6,7,8,2 She married WILLIAM THOMAS "Billy Jaybird" SANDERS (SAUNDERS) at Rockingham, North Carolina, USA, on 26 March 1806.9,3,10,5,6 She moved circa 1812 at Williamson, Tennessee, USA.2 ELIZABETH died on 30 December 1870 at Giles, Tennessee, USA, at age 83. Bellenfant Family gives 1872 as deathdate, incorrectly I believe..3,4,11,6,7,8,2 Her body was interred at Pulaski, Giles, Tennessee, USA, at Abernathy Cemetery.4,8

WILLIAM THOMAS "Billy Jaybird" SANDERS (SAUNDERS) William Thomas (Billy Jaybird) Sanders. Notes gathered by Alvy Smith [96] on 1990 visit to Pulaski, TN: "Sanders home - near Campbellsville - Giles County, Tennessee - on Big Creek. Big Spring - named by Indians - flows 3 million gallons per day - beginning of Big Creek. Sanders place around 500 acres - Jack White told this story - An old man told it to him. 'Sanders - a big man - strode through the canebrakes that would become Pulaski - he pledged to build a place there. Got in an argument with a man - they fought for hours - bloody and bleeding - then to a tavern - drank all night - next morning they came out arm in arm and became lifelong friends.' Jack remembers his daddy saying: 'Billy Jaybird Sanders is buried right up there with his wife, Betsie.' '' There are old records stored for safekeeping in the old court house of Wentworth, North Carolina (Rockingham County, north of Greensboro, NC). This may be a source of future information on Sanders.

The Bob Carter evidence mentions William (and James and Robert) Sanders in three Rockingham Co, NC deeds (on Great Rock House Creek) for 26 Nov 1800, 21 May 1810, and 14 Aug 1810. This is consistent with his leaving for TN ca 1812. Carter also lists a marriage bond for Robert Sanders, with William as bondsman, also in Rockingham, 28 Feb 1809, again consistent with the ca 1812 date.

More from this letter:

"I have checked the deeds and wills for Sanders and Bellanfants. Your Wm. Thomas Sanders born 1783 is likely the son of james Sanders, Sr. who settled on Rockhouse Creek by the 1770s. In 1782 he secured a state of N.C. land grant for 500 acres. He later built a grist mill on the property. By 1786 James was selling some of his land. In 1800 he sold "his son" William 363 acres. Now as Wm was only 17 years old this seems very young to receive this much land but this is what the deed says."

Bellenfant-Sanders Letters: "This gives data which Katie Witt Pulley says is from the Abernathy Cemetery near Pulaski.: William S. Sanders born July 1783 died Nov. 1874. Mrs. Elizabeth Sanders, born March 29, 1787, died Dec. 30, 1870. On marker, William Sanders and wife."

The 1850 Census five persons, color B, all born in NC, as living with William Saunders 68, Elizabeth 65, and William 21: Emily Meals 25F, Martha Ann 10F, William H 5M, Virginia F 4F, and John J 2M. And a sixth is also listed but born in Tenn: Barbary Lewis, age 6/12thF. These are presumably slaves. I have just looked at dozens of pages of the 1850 Census for Giles Co and these are the first "B"s I've seen listed for any family.

The 1840 Giles Co TN Census:

"Sanders, Wm., 1 M 10-15, 1 M 15-20, 1 M 20-30, 1 M 50-60, 1 F 10-15, 1 F 15-20, 1 F 40-50"
From the 1850 Census data:
William would be 58 M,
Elizabeth 55 F,
William 11 M.
From other data:
Mary 22 F
Minerva 17 F
This accounts for 1 M 10-15 and 1 M 50-60. Presumably the 1 M 15-20 and 1 M 20-30 would have left home by 1850, as would 1 F 10-15 and 1 F 15-20. By stretching (actually assuming a systematic mistake for females) Elizabeth would be the 1 F 40-50, Mary would be 1 F 15-20, and Minerva would be 1 F 10-15.

There is also a Duke Sanders in the 1840 Census, 20-30 M, and a John Sanders, also 20-30 M, who don't match with known Sanders kids. WILLIAM was born at Rockingham, North Carolina, USA, on 15 July 1783.5,6,7,8,9,3 He bought property at 363 acres on Great Rock House Ck, Rockingham, North Carolina, USA, on 26 November 1800.10 He married ELIZABETH C "Betsy" BELLENFANT at Rockingham, North Carolina, USA, on 26 March 1806.11,12,13,14,8 He moved circa 1812 at Williamson, Tennessee, USA.15 WILLIAM was listed as the head of a family on the in 1840 Census at Giles, Tennessee, USA.4 WILLIAM died in November 1874 at Giles, Tennessee, USA, at age 91.5,3 His body was interred at Pulaski, Giles, Tennessee, USA, at Abernathy Cemetery.5,3

Deed Book AA, p. 255); said to have gone to Mississippi to live. Perhaps soon after this land transaction. Wife Sarah, b. c1811, Tn. Giles Co. Tn. census of 1850 gave children ... . [Added in handwriting: Lorenzo D. Sanders married Sarah Spivey. This family moved to Lee Co. Miss]"

Additional info from Elizabeth Witt White 1/1997:"This family moved to Tupelo, Lee Co. Mississippi about 1860. Both are buried in the Beulah Smith Cemetery next to the Old Free Will Baptist Church about 8 miles north of Tupelo."

1850 TN Census, Giles Co, District 13:

"Lorenzo D. Saunders, age 41, sex M, profession (prof) Farmer, value of real estate 7800, place of birth (pob) NC
Sarah, 39, F, pob Tenn, over 20 and unable to read or write
William H., 19, M, prof Farmer, pob Tenn, attended school during year

Sarah E., 5, F, pob Tenn, attended school during year
Salona A., 4, F, pob Tenn, attended school during year
Josaphine, 2, F, pob Tenn
Robert, 28, M, prof Wagoner, pob Tenn"

The last entry is most likely his brother Robert who was born Aug 1821, TN who would have been 28 at census time.

1840 Giles Co TN Census:

"Sanders, L. D. 2 M 0-5, 1 M 5-10, 1 M 10-15, 1 M 20-30, 2 F 0-5, 1 F 20-30"

Using the 1850 census data:
Lorenzo D would be 31 M
Sarah 29 F
William H 9 M
George W 3 M
Joseph H 1 M
This accounts for 2 M 0-5, 1 M 5-10, 1 M 20-30 (with a stretch), and 1 F 20-30. The 1 M 10-15 would probably have left home by 1850. But the 2 F 0-5 in 1840 are unaccounted for in 1850. Lorenzo was born at Rockingham, North Carolina, USA, on 29 November 1808.4,5,6,7 He married Sarah "Sally" Spivy (Spivey) at Maury, Tennessee, USA, on 14 July 1829.5,8,9 Lorenzo was listed as the head of a family on the in 1840 Census at Giles, Tennessee, USA.3 He bought property at Giles, Tennessee, USA, on 31 December 1859.10 He moved circa 1860 at Tupelo, Lee, Mississippi, USA.11 Lorenzo died after 1860 at Tupelo, Lee, Mississippi, USA.12 His body was interred at Tupelo, Lee, Mississippi, USA, at Beulah Smith Cemetery.11

Lucy E Sanders Bellenfant Family: "Lucy Sanders, b. c1810; m. - - - Parks; no known children." This is the total reference to her. It differs substantially from the other evidence. See below. The Parks marriage is iffy. See sister Minerva who did marry a Parks.

There is evidence that Yearly/Yearley/Early/Yelly Bolin/Bowlen/Bolling is her husband (or a 2nd husband). See Jo Ellis Email evidence, quoted below. NB. The evidence has become much stronger with the Jackson Bible evidence - see main text for husband Yearly Bolin.

"My late husband's 3rd great grandmother was a LUCY SAUNDERS/SANDERS b @1807 in NC. Around 1825-26 she married Yearley/Early/Yelly Bolin/Bowlen in presumably Giles Co. TN (Their first child was born there in 1826). Nothing has ever been mentioned that she wed before Mr. Bolin and we know she did not after his death.

"I tended to connect her to Wm and Elizabeth Bellenfant Sanders for several reasons. To my knowledge they were the only Sanders family in Giles in the early 1800's. Lucy was born in NC, the state they came from. Her age was right to be their daughter. She also named a son LORENZO DOW BOLIN. However I have no proof she is "your" Lucy.

"'My' Lucy married Mr. Bolin. They lived in Giles Co until shortly after 1850 when they moved to Stone Co, MO. Lucy and Yelly had 13 children which seemed to remain in the MO., TX, OK area.

Two unusual names that Lucy and Yelly named their twins were Tranquilla and Fountain Ella."

For what it's worth, Stone Co, MO is just across the stateline from Carroll Co, AR.

The following additional information is from a photocopy of p 868 of Goodspeed's ``History of Tennessee (Giles County)'':

"HON. JAMES C. SANDERS, a native of Tennessee, was born in 1816, and is the fourth of eight children born to William and Elizabeth (Bellanfant) Sanders. The parents are natives of North Carolina, and immigrated to Tennessee about 1812, locating in Williamson County, where they remained a few years, after which they permanently settled in Giles County. Here the mother died in 1872, and the father too passed from life about four years later. Our subject passed his early life on the farm and in the district schools. He lived with his father having entire control of the farm until about forty years of age. [Note that this would be about 1856, as the Civil War is just about to break out.] He was bitterly opposed to secession and stood firm for the Union. [For perspective, Tennessee seceded in 1861. Pulaski, Tennessee, was the birthplace of the Ku Klux Klan after the Civil War (a fact of which it is not proud)] During the war he remained at home as quiet and peaceable as man could be under lilke circumstances. In 1865 he married Catharine Parsons, a native of Tennessee, born about 1830, and the daughter of James W. and Massie (Gordon) Parsons. Our subject began life a poor man, had but poor advantages for an education and yet he is a good neighbor and an energetic, industrious citizen. In 1869 he was elected to the State Legislature to represent the counties of Marshal, Lincoln and Giles. At the end of two years he returned home and confined himself to the farm until 1884, when he was again called upon to appear before the people as an independent candidate for representative, and was duly elected for the years 1885 and 1886. Mr. Sanders resides in the Twelfth District, on an excellent farm of about 500 acres, which is fairly improved.''

See also the entry for William Henry Callaway. He also raised his nephew William H Callaway, after the death of his (Callway's) father. I believe Callaway's mother was Minerva Sanders, Jim's sister.

The 1850 TN (Giles Co) Census lists the following person living with the John Phelps family:

"James C. Sanders, 30, M, Wagoner, b Tenn" This is probably our James C although the age doesn't quite jibe with the 1816 birthdate (which would make him 33 at the census).

The 1870 census gives this:

"[Household] 53
James C. SANDERS 53 M W Farmer/Legislator 12000 6000 TN
Catharine C. 39 F W Keeping House TN
Nancy FAUGHT 19 F W TN 17
Elizabeth 16 F W TN 17
James W. PARSONS 75 M W 1000 200 VA"

Elizabeth Witt White has written over a copy of this census a "Parsons" after Catharine C., a "Wyatt" over the W. in James W., and "h/o Massey Gordon Parsons" next to James W PARSONS. James was born at Bodenham, Giles, Tennessee, USA, on 23 October 1816.6,1,7,8 He married Catherine C "Kate" Parsons on 6 December 1865.1,9 He became Robert J Sanders's adoptive father at Giles, Tennessee, USA, after 7 December 1886.4 He became Lucy E Sanders's adoptive father at Giles, Tennessee, USA, after 7 December 1886.4 He became Amos Belefant Sanders's adoptive father at Giles, Tennessee, USA, after 7 December 1886.4 James died on 13 January 1902 at Giles, Tennessee, USA, at age 85.6,1,7 His body was interred at Giles, Tennessee, USA, at Sanders family cemetery.6

However, I am all but convinced that she married William Henry Callaway, whose son William Henry (2) came to live with his Uncle, the Hon Jim Sanders after the death of his father. We know that Callaway's wife's name was Manerva from the 1850 Giles Co TN census.

Researcher Elizabeth Witt White of Pulaski, Giles Co, TN agrees with this analysis (letter of 14 Apr 2000):

"I am enclosing the Census records of Giles Co for the years 1850-1860-1870 for Manerva Sanders and her two husbands. She married William H. Calloway about 1848 or 1849, as she had daughter Elizabeth in 1850 aged one year. Then she had son William H. aoubt 1851 or 2. William H. Calloway died and Manerva later married James M. Park. After William H. Calloway died was when James Sanders most likely became guardian for these two children."

This places the husband Johnson in serious doubt. The Wilkinson Bellenfant source has Parks for Lucy Sanders husband and Johnson for Minerva. Perhaps these are reversed?
