James Whitaker1

M, d. 8 February 1852
Father(?) WHITAKER
James was born at England. He Lived at Greem, according to a letter from James Hargreaves in Burnley, Lancashire to his brother Henry Hargreaves in NSW, Australia, 25 February 1845. (See also his letters of 24 June 1852, 7 August 1855, and December 1857. From these can be deduced that Uncle James is James Whittaker.)

Letter of 24 Jun 1852: "Uncle James died on the 8 of february last but Cousins Bridget and Eunice live together at the same place. I read them the letter and a part of the newspaper you sent. Thomas Smith seems to be doing very well. Alice & Sarah Ann are Weavers at Drydales' Mill. I thought Sarah herself did not look so well in person as to enjoy very good health, but folks do lose their helathy appearance as they advance in age." I take all these as direct kin, including marriage, of Uncle James. In particular, Bridget and Eunice appear to be daughters of his.

Letter of 24 Jun 1854: "I have to tell you that Cousin Bridget has got married to James Lager? Farmer Hopton. her 2 daughters are living with her at Fennyfold? Eunice is living at Padiham & her child. she's like a nervious old maid. Cousin Jimmy is partner with Jack Dodgson in a loom making concern in Burnley. You will perhaps know that he married Eliza Graham for his 2nd wife." Are Bridget's two daughters from a previous marriage? Does Eunice have a child?

Letter of 8 Jul 1855: "Cousin Whitaker is dead and buried. Bridget is doing well she seems to be a good farmers wife. Elisha looks a poor torn fellow having little? ... in him with a large family. Eunice is a fretting old maid. James is partner yet with Jack Dodgson at loom making. I think his wife wears the breeches. I have herad nothing of Elon." I don't know who the death refers to. Eunice apparently is a spinster (so what is "her child" above?). I take this as evidence that Bridget, Eunice, Elisha, James, and Elon are James Whitaker's children.

Letter of Dec 1857: "Cousins Eunice & Bridget are both well. Cousin James Whitaker and family left here & gone to America to his Wife's Brother, Paul Graham." So this proves that James is a Whitaker and thus I take Eunice, Bridget, etc, to be so also. James died on 8 February 1852 at Lancashire, England.

Bridget Whitaker In a letter from James Hargreaves, Burnley, Lancashire to his brother Henry Hargreaves, Adelong Creek, NSW, 24 June 1854:

"I have to tell you that Cousin Bridget has got married to James Lager? [question mark in transcription at least] Farmer Hopton. her 2 daughters are living with her at Fennyfold?"

So she married a farmer in Hapton, a few miles from Padiham and Burnley. This is supported in the Mary Hargreaves letter (evidence) of 10 Oct 1861: "Cousin Bridget is married and keeps a farm up in Hapton and Eunice is living with her but is still simple." The last phrase is telling.

Cousin Bridget is referrred to frequently in the evidence, which indicates strongly that she is a Whitaker and daughter to James.

See text for her husband James Sager for further details about her and her children. Bridget was born at Altham, Lancashire, England, in 1808.2 She married James Sager at Lancashire, England, after 1851.2 Bridget died in 1882 at Lancashire, England.2

James died. James was born at England. He In a letter from James Hargreaves, Burnley, Lancashire, to his brother Henry Hargreaves, Adelong Creek, NSW, 24 June 1854:

"Cousin Jimmy is partner with Jack Dodgson in a loom making concern in Burnley. You will perhaps know that he married Eliza Graham for his 2nd wife."

In another letter to him of 8 July 1855:

Eunice is a fretting old maid. James is partner yet with Jack Dodgson at loom making. I think his wife wears the breeches. I have heard nothing of Elon."

I have taken this as not-so-strong evidence that Bridget, Elisha, Eunice, James, and Elon are children of "Uncle James" Whitaker, using the writer's apparent penchant for listing a name followed by close relatives. A problem here is the identity of "Cousin Whitaker". My argument makes sense if he is Uncle James, but then why call him Cousin?

James and Eliza emigrated to America c1857, to join her brother Paul. He married Eliza Graham at England.

James Sager Originally read as Lager in the James Hargreaves evidence. Recent evidence from John Sagar in England:

"James Lager is in fact James Sager - Sager / Sagar were interchangeable. I attach the part of my descent which shows where she marries in along with the references I have - Eyes Barn in Hapton is a couple of hundred yards down the hill towards the river from Fennyfold farm. The earliest known family origins are across the river in Simonstone, about a mile away, where land was bought in 1560."

Also, in Mr Sagar's code:

First Settlers lists 13 children, mother's name unknown. LDS family group sheet lists 12 children, mother's name unknown. WFT lists mother's name as Anna.

A problem with the LDS list is that the date of the marriage of Abraham 1762 is after the birthdates of five of his children. If it were a typo for 1752, then all would be well. That being so, I have put the marriage date as 1752. Of course, all this fiddling is highly suspect.

I am also having trouble with which wife of his father is Abraham's mother. The WFT evidence gives Elizabeth Sickle, but that can't be. The LDS evidence gives Geertruij Van der Hoef. The problem with the latter is that, Geertruij would have been 46 years old at the birth of Abraham. I suspect Peter had another wife between Gertrude and Elizabeth, who would be Abraham's mother.

See wife ANNE's evidence too.

Another alternative offered for spelling his name is PIETER RUTEMPS. A variant first name is PIERRE.

LDS evidence also lists Pierre as his name.

Name: Abraham Sickle (van Sickle)
Date: 7 Aug 1759
Location: Morris Co.

"yeoman; will of. Wife, Sarah. Only child, Elisabeth. Real and personal estate. Executors--the wife and "Ensyn" Thomas Baker, of the Congregation of New Providence in the "Borrough" of Elizabeth. Witnesses--Jonathan Elmer, Piter Rutan, Abraham Rutan, Proved Dec. 10, 1759 [Lib. G, p. 139]"

Abraham is probably ABRAHAM, PETER's son. Rev Jonathan Elmer was pastor of the New Providence church where both attended. We know that Sarah, the widow, proceeded to marry a Mr Rutan with son Peter in Albany, but don't yet know which Mr Rutan that is. (See text for ELIZABETH, PETER's wife.)

The Hoyes of Maryland, 97-8:

"Pierre (Peter) Rutan, son of Abraham I, was baptized at New Paltz, N.Y., in 1691. Pieter Rettan married Geestruy Van der Hoef, Nov. 7, 1713. (Hackensack Church Record).

Joseph Frazee and Peter Rutan were among the earliest settler at New Providence, N.J., in 1736. Peter Rutan of Morris Co., N.J., made his will June 28, 1774; proved Aug. 7, 1774. His son and heir was Abraham. (N.J.Archvies). Peter Rutan resided at Elizabethtown, N.J., where he owned lots 28 and 29 of 100 acres each."

I believe the 1736 date in New Providence comes from Hatfield's History of Elizabeth NJ, 571:

"New-Providence
...
The settlement of this attractive portion of the town dates back, as previously stated, mainly to the period of the second general allotment of lands to the original Associates, or their legal representatives, 1736-8.
...
The earliest settlers were, -- [a list of 38 men] ... Joseph Frazee... Peter Rutan..."

So this doesn't quite say Peter was in New Providence in 1736 but implies that he was there, probably, in 1736-8.

Cornelis Breyandt moved "to the neighborhood of Elizabethtown, where he made his will" on 2 Oct 1720 (proved 19 Dec 1720), with one witness being Peter Rutan. This suggests, but doesn't prove that Peter moved to this area earlier than 1736, say about 1720. [Source: Collections of the New Jersey Historical Society, Vol. IX, Newark, 1916, repr. Clearfield Co., Baltimore, 1989, p 51]

"Rutan, John, & Catharine Jones, March 20."

Hoyes of MD, 98:

"John Rutan, son of Abraham II, married Catherine Jones of New JErsey in 1774 and "went west". In 1787 he was listed as a settler on Military Lots 3284, 3285, 3286 on the Blooming Rose, two miles south of Selbysport, Maryland. These lots he purchased from the State for six shillings, six pence [p 99] for each lot of fifty acres. This land made an excellent stock farm, known in recent years as the Runbaugh place. The Rutan log house was by the spring on the east side of the Blooming Rose road opposite the present farm house. Most of the neighbors -- Coddingtons, Frazees, VanSickle, Savage -- were also from New Jersey.

John Rutan was a typical pioneer settler; he had a large family, plenty of land and other very moderate resources. In 1798 he was assessed in Sandy Creek Hundred with 150 acres of land, one horse and seventeen cattle. His children may have attended either the Blooming Rose or Selbysport school. The Rutans were among the first members of the Methodist Congregation at Friend's, nearby. Rutan girls were noted singers in the neighborhood. W. Scott Friend told us that they often sat in the evening on the bluff overlooking the Youghiogheny River and sang hymns heard for miles over the quiet valley.

The Rutans planted a fine apple orchard on the slope above their home; some of the trees still [1942] bear fruit; the "Rutan Pippin" is the last of the Rutans on the Blooming Rose. The family graveyard is at the upper side of the orchard. Here stands a modest sandstone monument with a bronze tablet inscribed to the Pioneer settlers, John Rutan and Catherine Jones, 1787, erected by the descendants of Mary Rutan and William W. Hoye, in 1935.

Children of John and Catherine Rutan:

(1) Sarah, b. Apr. 10, 1775, m (???) Moore.
(2) Peter, b. Nov. 18, 1777. Descendants at Arrolton, Ohio.
(3) Daniel, b. Aug. 24, 1779.
(4) Andria, b. Aug. 24, 1779.
(5) David, b. Dec. 22, 1782. m. Esther (???).

(7) Isaac, b. Oct. 29, 1788. m. Hannah Pearson, 1809.
(8) Mary, b. Mar. 7, 1792, d. 1842. m. Wm. W. Hoye
(9) Catherine, b. Apr. 17, 1794.

Isaac Rutan died in Maryland, leaving two children.

Daniel Rutan bought 101 acres of "Shepherds Tent" near the Sanging Ground but abandoned it and went West about 1835.

John Rutan died at his home February 7, 1838. His will was probated, March 13, 1839. Witnesses were John Frantz, Stephen P. Rutan, Joseph J. Frantz, and Danile J. Hoye. David Rutan inherited the home farm upon the death of his mother.

The pioneer, his wife Catherine, and probably Isaac and Anne are buried in the farm graveyard.

David Rutan was Justice of the Peace of his District in 1814. In 1845 he sold the remainder of the Rutan farm, 64 acres, to John Slicer. All the Rutans left Maryland except Mary, who married W. W. Hoye."
