Peter Laurie Reid Malcolm Ward's genealogy:
"More about Peter Laurie Reid:
Burial: Cornelian Bay cemetery
Christening: 1 December 1833, Hobart
Occupation: Photorapher
More about Sarah Caroline Seabrook:
Baptism: St Luke's, Old Street, London; Lamb's Abode, Finsbury, London
Burial: Cornelian Bay cemetery"
Sharon Brennan's notes:
"Sarah Caroline and Peter Laurie Reid had six children.
1. Louisa Alice 7 June 1858
2. Isabella Emily 11 December 1860
3. Male 14 January 1863
4. Henry William 6 September 1864
5. Emma Laura ?
6. William Albert 1868
Births of the Reid children do not appear to have been registered. However, birth notices for two of the boys appeared in the Mercury in 1863 and 1864 and a death notice for Isabella appeared in 1862. It seems that Henry is the male born on the 6th September 1864 as when he married in January 1887 he was 22 years old but the announcement of his marriage in The Mercury (23/2/1887) states that he was the second eldest son of P.L. Reid. The birth certificate of one of William’s children suggests that William was born in 1868 or 1869 and states that he was born in Launceston. From this it can be assumed that there was a third son, (the first born son) who may have died before December 1893 when Peter Laurie Reid made his will. (I may be mistaken about this).

TEA AND COFFEE WAREHOUSE
172 Elizabeth St (between Patrick and Warwick St)
From 1852 until 1862 Peter Laurie Reid ran a store at 172 Elizabeth Street, Hobart. Advertisements in The Mercury in 1862 announced that P.L.Reid had opened a Post Office in addition to his grocery and Ironmongery stores. As well as selling stamps and delivering letters three times a day, he lent and invested money, took orders for firewood, attended auctions, collected rents, and obtained good positions for servants. He also opened a general agency and registry office. Later in 1862 he moved his registry office to 44 Murray Street.
On the 6th April 1862 Peter Laurie Reid’s father James of 115 Forest Road, Hobart died. James, a builder had been born in Scotland. His death was reported in The Mercury on the 8th April. The death of Sir Peter Laurie, Alison Reid’s uncle was reported in the same paper. He was the oldest member of the Court of Alderman in London and had been Lord Mayor of the City of London. Three days after his father died, Peter Laurie Reid’s daughter Isabella died in Franklin. It seems that his wife Sarah Caroline had been visiting her sister Emma Dawson at Franklin. While there her 16 month old daughter Isabella died of acute diarrhoea. Her death was recorded by her uncle Dr William Lee Dawson who was the registrar in Franklin and it was reported in The Mercury on the 23rd April 1862.
In June 1863 Reid’s registry office business was for sale. He then opened a photography business, P.L. Reid & Co. in partnership with Matthew Patrick Dowling. In 1864 this partnership ended in a bitter dispute. Reid and Dowling conducted their debate in the Hobart Town press.
In 1864 the family lived at 10 Elizabeth Street in a house and shop owned by John Lord and valued at £60. This shop was two doors from the Derwent Tavern and three up from the Advertiser newspaper (Hobart Town Gazette, 1864).
During the mid 1860’s Peter Laurie Reid worked as a travelling photographer and in 1867 he opened the London Portrait Gallery, St John Street, Launceston. While there his two youngest children were born. He is remembered for his landscape photography. The Mitchell Library in Sydney have many carte-de-visite views of Launceston and surrounding districts. They are of a very high artistic and technical standard. Many family photos taken by Peter Laurie Reid also survive.
Peter Laurie Reid died on the 18th April 1911 at his residence 12 Andrew Street, North Hobart aged 77 years and was buried at Cornelian Bay Cemetery. His estate, valued at £6649-10-11, was left to his widow Sarah, his children Henry, William, Louisa and Emma and his grandchildren.
Peter was born at Hobart, Tasmania, Australia, in 1833.3 He was baptized at Hobart, Tasmania, Australia, on 1 December 1833. Religion: (an unknown value).1 He married Sarah Caroline Seabrook at Chalmer's Free Church, Hobart, Tasmania, Australia, on 10 September 1857.4 He made a will in December 1893.2 Peter died on 18 April 1911 at Hobart, Tasmania, Australia.3 His body was interred at Hobart, Tasmania, Australia, at Carnelian Bay Cemetery.1
