Elizabeth _1,2
F, b. circa 1691
Elizabeth _ First Settlers hints at the Peter Rutan problem, 382, 414:
382: "Note. - Sarah Thompson, daughter of Thomas Thompson, married, 1st, Mr. Van Sickle, of Long Hill, and had a daughter, Elizabeth, who married Jacob Britton, son of William. ... She [Sarah, see below] married, 2d, Mr. Rutan, who had a son, Peter, who lived in Albany, N. Y..."
414: "Sarah [Thompson, dau of John Thompson] married 1st, Mr. Van Sickle, of Long Hill, and had a daughter, Elizabeth, who married Jacob Britton, son of William .... Sarah married 2d, Mr. Rutan, who had a son, Peter, who lived in Albany, N. Y.. ..."
Note that this implies that Sarah Sickle (or Van Sickle) married Mr. Rutan with son Peter. Our PETER RUTAN had a son Peter by his first marriage. His second marriage was to ELIZABETH (not SARAH) SICKLE.
Also on p 382:
"SAMUEL VAN SICKLE had children:
...
4. Elizabeth. (Is not this Elizabeth the wife of Jacob Britton.)"
So here Littell questions whether Elizabeth Van Sickle, dau of Samuel Van Sickle, is the same Elizabeth Van Sickle who married Jacob Britton.
First Settlers, 55:
"Jacob [Brittin], who married Elizabeth Van Sickle, 3d March, 1774, whose mother was sister of Thomas Thompson, of Springfield; also was sister of Elizabeth, wife of William Cauldwell."
And on p 57:
"JACOB BRITTIN ... lived on Longhill ... . He and his wife, Elizabeth Van Sickle, had children:
...
Jacob Brittin died 18th August, 1784, and his widow Elizabeth, married Jonathan Miller, of Westfield, who lived with her at Longhill till she died, 15th July, 1795, aged 41 years."
So this Elizabeth Van Sickle was born about 1754, well after our ELIZABETH SICKLE who had ABRAHAM RUTAN ca 1734.
Conclusion: The Elizabeth Van Sickle on this page of notes is not our ELIZABETH SICKLE.
Friom the NJ Calendar of Will evidence, she is a widow of Abraham Van Sickle, so she is ELIZABETH // only. Finally, we don't really know that she is ABRAHAM's mother although it is stated so by Meachem in the Rutan Vertical File.
To add to the confusion, the following item from the NJ Calendar of Wills, Vol 3, 1751-1760, the will of
Name: Abraham Sickle (van Sickle)
Date: 7 Aug 1759
Location: Morris Co.
"yeoman; will of. Wife, Sarah. Only child, Elisabeth. Real and personal estate. Executors--the wife and "Ensyn" Thomas Baker, of the Congregation of New Providence in the "Borrough" of Elizabeth. Witnesses--Jonathan Elmer, Piter Rutan, Abraham Rutan, Proved Dec. 10, 1759 [Lib. G, p. 139]"
So this must be the Sarah Thompson m1 Abraham Sickle m2 "Mr. Rutan who had a son Peter who lived in Albany" and dau Elizabeth Sickle is she who married Jacob Brittin. This item shows that the Peter and Abraham Rutan were acquainted with this family via the New Providence church (with Rev Jonathan Elmer). Elizabeth was born at New York City, New York, New York, USA, circa 1691.3 As of circa 1711,her married name was Sickle.4 She married Abraham Sickle Sr circa 1712.4 She married PETER [PIERRE] [PIETER] ABRAHAM RUTAN [Ru21] after 13 December 1744.5,6,7,8 As of after 13 December 1744,her married name was RUTAN.9,5,6

He married Sarah MANNING about 1757. Sarah MANNING was born abou 1737.

+62 i. John RUTAN
63 ii. Mary RUTAN was born about 1762.
64 iii. Sarah RUTAN was born about 1764."
The Hoyes of Maryland, 100:

which appears to have been a lot on Patterson Creek surveyed by George Washington and granted by Lord Fairfax in 1748 to John Rutan. John Rutan, Jr., and others of that settlement, moved to Westmoreland Co., Pa., prior to 1778. In the census of 1790 Rutan was listed there as head of a family of six."
RUTTAN is wrong since two children are listed born after John's will, proved in 1761. I have used 1753 as their marriage date estimate to allow birth of 5 children before 1761. I have listed the children in the order they first appear in John's will. ABRAHAM BOUDAT RUTAN [Ru14] NB. He is listed as Abraham B Rutan in RUTTAN. The B is, I think, just an indication that this is the second Abraham born to these parents.
[NB No, source no. 1259, Heritage Matters, gives his name as Abraham Boudat RUTAN [1658-1713]"]
LDS evidence gives birthplace as "Of Metz, Lorraine, France", but WFT gives it as St Michiel, Alsace, France. Birthdates are 5 May 1656 and 1658, respectively. Clearly a problem here. I am tentatively going with the LDS version. Caution. The CLAUDIN RUTTAN book seems most authoritative. It gives only a baptism date, in Metz, Lorraine, France:
"CHRISTENING: An extract from the register of infant baptisms in the Reformed Church of Metz reads : "June 10, 1658. Abraham, son of Daniel Rutan and of Anne de Bize, his wife. Godfathers Abraham Boudat and Paul Cluien, godmothers Marie Bancelin and Susanne Pilon." (Ruttan, 1986 p. 7)"
Also
"Died on 19 May 1713 in New Barbadoes, Bergen, New Jersey."

p 37:
"October 14, 1683. Baptised two children of Pierre Doyau _____ and [one] named Peter, the other Mary. Abraham Rutan, Godfather, and Mary Petilon, Godmother, to the first, of the other Abraham DuBois, Godfather, and Margaret Doioie (Doyau), Godmother."
p 38:
"September 23, 1684. Baptised a child of Abraham Ruton [Rutemps] and Marie Petilon, named Daniel. Godfather, Louys DuBois, Catherine Blancon [Blanjean], Godmother."
"March 20, 1685-6. Baptised a child of Abm. Ruton [Rutemps], named Paul. Hugh Frere, Godfather, Hagar Meckel, Godmother."

p 40:

"October 24, 1691. Abram Rutemp and Mary Petilon, his wife, had a boy baptised called Peter. Godfather, Peter Guimar, Godmother, Esther Hasbrouck."
p 43:
"Recapitulation by translator of names of French families, or Surnames of the record in their order:
DuBois, Rutamps (or Ruton)..., Petilon..."
At this point I am thinking there might be two Abraham Rutan's being confused, one from New Paltz NY and the other from New Barbadoes NJ. But it is possible that the NY Rutans moved, via New Barbadoes, NJ to Elizabethtown NJ. The birthdates of the children other than those listed above is consistent with this hypothesis. The RUTTAN book (see quotes below) backs this too.
From Stitt, p 8:
"Doubtless many of the other Patentees [of New Paltz NY] found a refuge in the Palatinate for a longer or shorter period. It need scarcely be observed that to this circumstance of their brief sojourn in the Palatinate, New Paltz, derives its name - Palatinate being the English of Paltz."
Elsewhere, I have seen that Pfaltz, the Palatinate, is on the Rhine in Germany.
This first quote from the RUTTAN book quotes the source "(Ruttan, 1986 pp. 10-11):
"BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE: "While living in Metz, Abraham was a minor and no records of his life there have been found. Probably about 1670, he went into Germany, as did many other Huguenots, and settled in or near Mannheim in the Palantinate where he is believed to have joined the Hasbrouck Party and journeyed with them via Rotterdam, Amsterdam, and England to America, arriving in the town of Boston in early 1675.
Abraham, so far as is known, was the first and only of our name to have emigrated from Europe to America in these times. The Hasbrouck Party sailed on to New York and travelled on, reaching Ulster County in July 1675. They moved on to Esopus, the area around Kingston in Ulster Couty on the west bank of the Hudson River, where, in 1677, New Paltz was founded. Abraham settled there and the first record of him in Americas is as a sponsor, on October 14, 1679, at the baptism of a daughter of Peter Deyo, one of the "Douzaine" (the twelve families that established New Paltz) at Kingston, New York. In 1680, the exact date not known, Abraham married Marie Petilion (or Peteljon) who is believed to have come to America in the same group as Abraham. Their children were amongst the first to be baptized in the French Church, which had been established in 1683 at New Paltz.
On September 1, 1689, Abraham took the Oath of Allegiance to the English Crown. By indenture dated October 26, 1699, Abraham bought a parcel of land and meadow in New Barbadoes in the County of Essex in the Province of East New Jersey from Thomas Noell of the City of New York, merchant, and Hannah, his wife. There he and Marie and likely some of their children lived and it seemed prospered, until he died on May 19, 1713. Marie (Mary) died later that same year. With the exception of a parcel of land that had been given to their eldest child, Daniel, and some other small bequests, her will dated February 19, 1712 (or possibly 1713?) directed that her estate be distributed in equal proportions amongst her children. While there is some disagreement among researchers, it appears that Abraham and Marie had twelve children, the first five of whom are recorded as being baptized in the French Church at New Paltz." "
This second quote from the RUTTAN book quotes the source "(From a genealogical record of the Rutan Family assembled by Howard Rutan, posted to GenWeb on the Internet by Warren Simmons).":
"BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE: "The first known of the Rutan family (in America) is one Abraham Rutan who came to America from Platz-Loraine in 1677. Loraine at that time belonged to France and it was on account of religious persecution that Rutan and a party of friends first went to Manheim, Lower Pallalinate [sic], Germany, from there to Holland and from there to America, landing at Boston, Massachusetts, in 1677 and settling at New Platz [sic], Ulster County, New York. Abrahma Rutan married Marie Patiljon who was supposed to have come from Lorraine with the Rutan party. We have no record of her family, however, earlier than 1678 when Marie joined the Dutch Reformed Church of New York City. The date of the marriage of Abraham Rutan and Marie Patiljon is unknown. The earliest church records that we have are recorded in the Dutch Reformed Church, New York City, when in 1860 [1680?] Abraham Rutan was Godfather for Racheal, the daughter of Abraham Hasbrouck, and also for Samuel, the son of Moses DeGrave." Hoyes of MD, 96:
"Abraham Rutan accompanied Abraham Hasbrouk from Manheim to Holland, thence to America. In 1675 Hasbrouk and eleven other French refugees obtained a patent for a large tract of land in Ulster County, New YOrk, south of Kingston, which they settled and named New Paltz. In 1677 Abraham Rutan was living in New Paltz. He married Marie Petilion, a French girl who had crossed the ocean with the Hasbrouk party; the records show that in 1678 she joined the Dutch Reformed Church of New York City.
At New Paltz the settlers built their houses on the village street, as was the custom in France, advisable also for defense from the Indians. Some years later they replaced the log cabins with well built stone houses, such as they had in France. Several of these original settlers' stone houses are still in use as residences in New Paltz; one is the village museum; the old fort of two stories is a tourist or visitors' home.
The church at New Paltz was formed "after the manner and difficult discipline of the Church of Geneva, followers of John Calvin." It was called the Walloon Protestant Church. Services were held in the French language for fifty years; thereafter in Dutch.
Father Abraham and Mother Marie Rutan are buried in the old French Church (Bellville) graveyard at Hackensack in unmarked graves.
Children of Abraham Rutan and Marie Petilion baptized in the New Paltz Church:
(1) Daniel, baptized Sept. 23, 1683. Godfather, Louys Dubois.
(2) Paul, baptized March 20, 1685. Godparents: Hoghe Frere, Agaer Mchel.
(3) Davide, baptized Apr. 17, 1688. Godparents: Pier Dygle, Genve Vylar.
(4) Ester, baptized May 14, 1690. Godparents: Abraham & Ester Hasbrouk.
(5) Pierre, baptized Oct. 24, 1691. Godparents: Pierre Quimer, Ester Hasbrouk. Died, Aug. 5, 1690, a daughter, aged six months.
The last record we have of Abraham Rutan in the New Paltz Church is in 1695, when he is named godfather of a son of Moses De Grave. After this he is found in New Barbadoes (Hackensack), Bergen County, New Jersey, where in 1699 he bought a tract of land of Thomas Noel. In 1707 he bought a "parcel of land from Bartholomew Feuert, paying five pounds and a more valuable and greater consideration."
At New Barbadoes the family attended the Belville Church; in the records of that church are the following names of children of Abraham and Marie Rutan, but no dates of their births or baptisms are given: (6) Susan; (7) Sara; (8) Maria; (9) Catharina; (1) Abraham; (11) Samuel.
Abraham Rutan's will (see appendix [see below]) was signed September 10, 1712, and proved May 19, 1713. Mary Rutan, his widow, made her will February 19, 1713, and it was proved June 12, 1713."

In 1677 David des Marest purchased of the Indians a large area of land on the Hackensack River for himself and companions. Rutan and Des Marest doubtless met in Manheim. Abraham Rutan, about 1699, moved from New Paltz to the Demarest colony in New Jersey, where he appears to have resided on the west bank of the Hackensack River."

Abram Rutan is sponsor for child Abram born to Moses de Graaf and Hester La Maitre, baptized 9 Jun 1695 at the old church in Kingston [p 44, item 848]

pp 147-9: "A Rool of the Names and Surnames of them that have takin the oath of allegiance in ye county of Ulster, by ordr of his excely: ye Governor; ye ffirst day of Septembr anno Qe: Domini 1689- ":
p 148: "Rutton, Abraham"
Jean and Abraham Hasbrouck were brothers, Huguenot refugees who brought a party of settlers to New Paltz. In Jean Hasbrouck's last will and testament, written 26 Aug 1712 in New Paltz, Ulter Co, NY, proved 14 Aug 1714 is the following item:
"6th. I give to my daughter Mary and to her order or heirs the sum of fifty-seven pounds current money of New York due to me from Abraham Rutan according to bond forty-two pounds and from Pieter DuBois according to bond fifteen pounds. I also give to her all that she has heretofore had from me, and she shall make no further claims on my estate."9,10,11
ABRAHAM was born at Metz, Moselle, Lorraine, France, on 5 May 1656. WFT: 1658, St Michiel, Alsace, France
LDS: 5 May 1656, Of Metz, Lorraine, France
I am going with the LDS tentatively.12 He was baptized at Metz, Moselle, Lorraine, France, on 10 June 1658. Religion: (an unknown value).13,14 ABRAHAM immigrated, before 7 April 1679. Destination: New Paltz, NY.2,15 He married MARIE [MARY] PETILION at Bergen, New Jersey, USA, on 7 April 1679. WFT: ca 1680 New Paltz, NY
LDS: 1712/1713, New Barbadoes, NJ
The LDS dates cannot be right since the birthdate of child #1 is 23 Sep 1684
These are death dates.
Huguenot Register gives her name only..1,16,17,18,19 He resided at New Paltz, Ulster, New York, USA, in 1684. Births of five children to Abraham Rutan and Mary Petilon are recorded for these years in New Paltz..3 He resided at New Paltz, Ulster, New York, USA, in 1695.20,21 He bought property at New Barbadoes, Bergen, New Jersey, USA, in 1699.22 He bought property at New Barbadoes, Bergen, New Jersey, USA, in 1707.22 He made a will at New Barbadoes, Bergen, New Jersey, USA, on 10 September 1712.23,24 ABRAHAM died on 11 February 1713 at New Barbadoes, Bergen, New Jersey, USA, at age 56.1,25,18,7,26 ABRAHAM's will was probated at New Barbadoes, Bergen, New Jersey, USA, on 19 May 1713.7,24
[NB No, source no.
Also
"Died on 19 May 1713 in New Barbadoes, Bergen, New Jersey."

p 37:

p 38:
"September 23, 1684. Baptised a child of Abraham Ruton [Rutemps] and Marie Petilon, named Daniel. Godfather, Louys DuBois, Catherine Blancon [Blanjean], Godmother."

p 40:
"August 3, 1690. A daughter of Abram Rutemp died, aged about 6 months."
