There is a good chance that Sarah is Sarah Thompson, dau of John Thompson (cf First Settlers 57, 382, 414). Estimates for her dates are 1720-1800 (based on 1712-1803 for her older brother Thomas and c1729-1794 for her younger sister Elizabeth). We know she married Mr Rutan as her second husband (and that he had a son Peter of Albany), and that her other two husbands were both of Long Hill, near where our RUTANS of New Providence area lived. Peter Rutan Jr's dates are c1720-c1754, which means Sarah would have had time to marry a third time, as we know she did. However, the son Peter of Albany (sounds like he was already grown) doesn't fit this picture.
NO! The theory above doesn't work. The will of Abraham Sickle (see text for ELIZABETH //, wife of PETER RUTAN) is dated and proved in 1759, so his wife Sarah Thompson could not have married Peter Rutan Jr in 1741, especially since Peter died in 1754!

CLAUDIN [CLAUDE] RUTAN [Ru1] Much of the information here for this family comes from RUTTAN, or:
"10 Generations of the Descendants CLAUDIN RUTTAN" at
http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Prairie/5864/ruttanbook.htm. I believe the author to be Mark Oliver Ruttan of Canada.
I use the number scheme from this reference to keep track of the RUTANs. Eg, CLAUDIN RUTAN is [Ru1], the first item listed in reference RUTTAN.
The RUTTAN author in turn refers often to Ruttan 1986 or:
"Ruttan, Henry N. (1986) A Part of the Family of Ruttan, 1590-1986. This is probably the most significant history on the family, particularly in Canada. It was published by Emery Publishing of Ottawa, Ontario. Its 248 pages contain a considerable amount of information of the Ruttan family, but sadly, few sources are given. Still, it is packed with names, dates, places, and biographical notes. It has a great index."
A note on the spelling of the surname:
It is usually RUTTAN for those branches, mostly in Canada, who descended from Loyalists in the Rev War, and RUTAN, mostly in the US, from Patriots. I will use the RUTAN spelling.
Here are the notes on CLAUDIN RUTAN from source RUTTAN:
"1. Claudin RUTTAN Furrier was born about 1564 in Saint-Mihiel, Lorraine, France. Died about 1613 in Saint-Mihiel, Lorraine, France.
ORIGINS: "The Ruttan family were huguenots who fled from France after the massacre of St. Bartholomew in 1572 and went to England, then back to Holland where they amassed a large fortune." (Reaman, 1964 pp. 218-219) [I do not know this reference]
ORIGINS: "Dumont, a Judge of Saint-Mihiel, author of Nobiliaraire de Saint-Mihiel, printed in 1864 at Nancy, quotes an earlier author, one Dom Pelletier, who wrote Nobiliaire de Lorraine, as placing the Rutants among the aristocratic families of France for over a century and as saying that it had been indicated probably without proof, that the family came from England. Dumont goes on to say that the first of the name in Sain-Mihiel were of the middle class and were entirely engaged in commerce where by their knowledge and energy they prospered. He suggests that the first of the name could have been one Philippe who, in 1506, was a leading draper or cloth merchant. Ferri, said to be a son of Philippe, had a son Jean, who had four sons, Nicolas, Jaques, Jean, and Pierre. Dumont provides biographies of these four and of another member of the family named Florentine, who were enobled by Charles III, Duke of Lorraine, between 1567 and 1599. We are told by Dumont that Jean, in 1554, lent the Town of Saint-Mihiel fifty gold crowns to present to the Duchess of Lorraine and that in 1589 the Abbe of Saint-Mihiel bought from Jaques 'quantities of Buckram and Silk and Gold thread' required by Abbe Merlin for uniforms for his soldiers at the time of the Holy League. Many other Rutants are recorded as being appointed to high civil and military positions. So far as the writer knows, no evidence has been found that proves that the Rutans or Ruttans of America and Canada are direct descendants of the Rutants of Lorraine. But in the final paragraph of his record of Florentine and his family, Dumont states that it was often said that there were in Saint-Mihiel many other Rutants, noblemen and commoners, who had not been listed in his book for lack of certainty. He mentions one Blaise Rutant, by profession a dealer in trimmings of lace and braid, who being unable to make a living in Saint-Mihiel, obtained permission to move to Metz, which he did in 1608. Dumont adds, 'he was a son of Claude.' Dumont closes by saying that, in 1636 other Rutants, descendants of Ferri, left Saint-Mihiel in order to avoid persecution as Protestants. The earliest documented records of the ancestors of the Rutan or Ruttan family of North America were found in the Saint-Mihiel civil registers of the year 1590 where Claudin Ruttan, furrier, and Catherine, his wife, are recorded as parents of Claude at his baptism on October 19, 1590." (Ruttan, 1986 pp.9-10).
He married Catharine about 1584 in France. Catharine was born about 1568 in Saint Mihiel, Meuse, France.
They had the following children:
+2 i. Blaise RUTTAN
+3 ii. Claude RUTTAN"

The Hoyes of Maryland, 95-100, is about the Rutan family:
95: "The history of the Rutan family takes us back to the religious wars and persecutions in France. The Rutans were French Huguenots, the tenets of whose faith were similar to those of the Scotch Presbyterians and English Puritans.
In 1559 the Huguenots, then a strong religious and political minority in France, held their first General Synod in Paris, but under Charles IX occurred the massacre of St. Bartholomew when some 6,000 Huguenots were murdered, followed by a religious-political civil war, until Henry of Navarre renounced Protestantism and became King of France. King Henry then issued the Edict of Nantes, which guaranteed freedom of conscience and of worship to the dissenters, who increased in numbers and became influential in trade and industry. But Louis XIV determined to stamp out forever the Huguenots
96: nots of France. After some years of persecution and disorder, in 1685 he revoked the Edict of Nantes, saying, "I have forbidden any exercise within my kingdom of the religion men call reformed."
It was during this period - when Huguenot churches were destroyed, private property confiscated, men sentenced to the galleys and prisions, women forced into convents, children taken from their parents and placed in Jesuit schools, mobs and soldiers turned loose on the people who would not be "converted" - that about one million good citizens of France, most of them after terrible risks and hardships, escaped from their native land to neighboring countries and to America.
Such is the European bakcground of the Rutans.
The first family record we have is of Ferry Rutan, mayor of St. Mihiel in 1534. Mob violence first struck at St. Mihiel and the Rutant family fled to Metz, where they established themselves in their various prusuits of good citizenship.
When this mob violence hit the city of Metz the Rutant family escaped with a party of friends to Manheim, Lower Palatinate, Germany. Even there they were harassed by the French so they went ot Holland and thence to America, landing at Boston and traveling thence to New York.
The historian [?] of the Rutan family gives the genealogy of the immigrant as follows: (1) Ferey Rutant, Mayor of St. Mihiel in 1534. (2) Claude Rutant I, merchant of St. Mihiel. (3) Cluade Rutant II, draper in Metz. (4) Abraham Rutant, born in 1634."
NB. I don't know who this "historian" is. The other sources do not support the genealogy just given.
Here are two notes from Hoyes of Maryland, p 95:
"NOTE:-- (1) Letter from Taton-vassal, Mayor of St. Mihiel, 1936:
... A superficial research has permitted me to find at St. Mihiel the presence of a noble family Rutant, whose members were magistrates from 1521 to 1641, and especially I find a Ferry Rutant who was Mayor from 1534, and whose nephew, or rather a descendant, was exempt from the tax in 1659, "because of his rank of the privileged."
(2) Letter from the Mayor of Metz, dated July 24, 1936:
There are no more members living in Metz. The old parish and Protestant registers and the state records in our libraries often mention the family Rutant or Rutan, including the brothers Blaise and Claude, sons of Claude Rutant. Claude Rutant II - protestant, draper, father of Judith, Marie, Jean, Danile, Abraham, Sara.
(3) "History of the Huguenot Emigration to America" says:
It was probably from the neighborhood of the same town (Metz in Lorraine) that Abraham Rutan, one of the Huguenot settlers at New Paltz, escaped to the Palatinate.
Also: "Refugees of the name Ferry Rutan and Blaise Rutan fled at an earlier day (about 1560) from persecution in St. Mihiel to Metz." "
CLAUDIN was born at St.-Mihiel, Meuse, Lorraine, France, circa 1564.1 He married CATHERINE (?) at France circa 1584.1,4 CLAUDIN died before 21 April 1613 at St.-Mihiel, Meuse, Lorraine, France. Dead at son's wedding on this date.1,5
