From Bob and Fran Schuler email:
"You asked about Michael Wade and Riley Green Hamptons membership in The Texas Rangers. I will quote from the Hampton manuscript compiled by Nancy and Lloyd Hampton several years ago. 'Michael served for 4 years with the CSA in the Civil War. He enlisted first on 2 Mar, 1861, in the Minute Company of Coryell Co, TX State Troops, under Capt. Samuel Friend. The principle duty of the company was to patrol the Northwest boundary of the county for frontier protection. Later in 1861 he joined the Mounted Rangers, 28th Brigade, Coryell Co., Texas State Troops under Capt. William Clements.' This group was then called to active duty against the Union. I don't think they were part of of The Texas Rangers, per se."
From The Men Who Wear the Star, pp 130, 132:
"... Ford, supported by Ranger companies under Tobin, Capt. Peter Tumlinson, and Capt. Wade Hampton, had attacked Cortina's line from the front." [in reference to the Mexican "bandit" Cortina (he was much more sophisticated than that description might indicate) and the so-called Cortina War, put down by the Rangers]
"Tobin was elected major.... The men of Joe Walker's company refused to serve under Tobin, and he ordered them mustered out along with the companies of Wade Hampton and a captain named Herron." [this after Cortina was neutralized]
Michael was born at Carroll, Arkansas, USA, on 13 May 1839.3,4,5 He married Mary Ann Williamson at Coryell, Texas, USA, on 19 May 1859.3,4 Michael died on 5 March 1925 at Hamilton, Hamilton, Texas, USA, at age 85.4 His body was interred at Coryell, Texas, USA, at Pearl Cemetery.4
