Samuel G B "Green" Raley1
M, b. circa 1829, d. 1901
Samuel G B "Green" Raley A Raley Story:
"-1850-
The 1850 U.S. Census record from Clarke County, Mississippi, on page 299, Dwelling and Family Number 50 shows: Green Railey, 21 years old, a farmer, born in Alabama. His wife is listed as Mary, no age given, but she was born in Alabama and they were married this year, 1850.
From this same record, on page 294, a Sam Railey and wife Elizabeth are listed with both of them born in South Carolina, but all of their children being born in Alabama. This family is probably Samuel G. B.'s Uncle Sam.
Samuel G. B. Raley, known as Green, and his bride went to Clarke County, Mississippi the year they were married and lived near his Uncle Sam Railey.
-1860-
The next record is the 1860 U.S. Census record from Mobile County, Alabama, Number 186, dated 5 July 1860, Page 33, Family Number 276, Line 26. Samuel G. B. Raley, age 32, laborer, born in Alabama and his wife, Mary A., age 27, also born in Alabama. Two children are listed as being born in Alabama: J.T., age 6 (John Thomas) and S. D., age 1 (Samuel David).
No records of land ownership have been located so, from the above records we surmise that Green did not farm very long in Mississippi before returning to Alabama and the populated area of Mobile. From the above records, we find Samuel G. B. as being born in 1828 in Alabama and Mary A. as being born in 1833 in Alabama. John Thomas Raley was born in 1854 and Samuel David was born in 1859.
On 10 Oct. 1861 Samuel G. B. Raley enlisted as a Private in Co. F. 2nd Battalion, Ala. Light Artillery, Confederate States Army for a period of 12 months at age 32.
He was listed on the Company Muster Roll as a private in Capt. Goge's Co. by Capt. C. P. Goge. This organization was designated at various times as: Goge's Co., Alabama Artillery, Co. E., Hallonquists Battalion of Light Artillery, Co. E. and Co. E., 2nd Battalion Light Artillery.
Green's Civil War record, as it appears on the Muster Rolls, is as follows:
1. 1 Dec. to 31, 1861 - present
2. 27 Jan to 31, 1862, employed on extra duty: a teamster for public wagon
3. 28 Feb. to 30 Apr. 1862 - Transferred on 16 Apr. 1862 to Co. F., 2nd Batt., Lt. Art.
4. 30 June to 31 Oct. 1862 - Lumsden's Company, Ala. Lt. Art. This organization was designated at various times as: Co. F., Lt. Art. Bttn., Lumsden's Co., Ala., Lt. Art., Lumsdens Company 1st Regiment Reserve Art. and Co. F, 2nd Bttn, Ala. Lt. Art.
5. 31 Oct. to 31 Dec. 1862 - present
6. 31 Dec. 1862 to 28 Feb. 1863 - present. During the month of February, Green was assigned extra duty again driving a Government Wagon as a teamster from 1 Feb. to 28 Feb. It doesn't say where or what was transported.
7. 28 Feb. to 30 Apr. 1863 - present
8. 30 Apr. to 30 June 1863 - present
9. 30 June to 31 Aug. 1863 - present
10. 31 Aug. to 31 Oct. 1863 - present
11. 31 Oct. to 30 Dec. 1863 - present. Beginning 20 Dec. 1863 until 20 Jan. 1864, he was absent for a 30-day furlough.
12. 31 Dec. to 28 Feb. 1864 - present
13. 29 Feb. to 30 Apr. 1864 - present
There is no further record of him on any Muster Roll. He appears on the Roll of Prisoners of War as follows:
1. Samuel G. B. Raley, Private Lumsden's Co., Alabama Light Artillery Residence 22 May 1865 is Jasper County, Miss. Of Companies G and C, 12 th Regiment Mississippi Cavalry, Confederate States Army, commanded by James Lyles, Captain.
2. Surrendered at Meridian, Mississippi by Lt. Gen. R. Taylor, C.S.A. to Maj. Gen E.R.S. Canby, U.S.A. 22 May 1964.
3. On 4 May 1865 he was paroled at Mobile. The Roll is dated 22 May 1865, Mobile, Ala.
From this record we find that he may have been a prisoner of war for about a year from 22 May 1864 until 22 May 1865. He may have been a prisoner from only 4 May until 22 May 1865, the record is not clear.
...
Following his release after the Civil War, Green took his wife, Mary A., and his two sons, now 11 and 6 years old, to Texas. Somewhere in Texas two more sons were born to them. Frank was born in 1868 and Robert Lois was born on 8 Oct. 1870. Their mother died when these two boys were very young, not in childbirth but sometime between 1872 and 1879. She was from 39 to 45 years old at the time.
-1880-
In the 1880 U. S. Census from Frio County, Texas, dated 10 June 1880 Page 11, Family Number 8093, we find: Railey, S.G.B. age 45 widowed farmer, born in Ala. and his father was born in Ala. The children listed are: Sam, 18 years old, single, mail carrier, born in Ala; Frank, 12 years old, attending school, born in Texas; and Robert, age 10, attending school, born in Texas."
Samuel was born at Alabama, USA, circa 1829. 21 in 1850 census

The last two items are inconsistent: more than a year has passed but the age hasn't increased.
