Nathaniel Bonnell1
M, b. 1697, d. 18 November 1763
Father | Nathaniel Bonnell b. c 1670, d. 4 Sep 1736 |
Mother | Mary ?Searing |
Nathaniel Bonnell NB. This is Nathaniel Bonnell 1st of First Settlers, p 46.
Day Upon Day, p 43:
"Nathaniel Bonnel III, our ancester, the eldest son of Nathaniel II and Mary Bonnel, was the third of that name and the first to be designated Captain for his service in the Revolution [but this can't be the reason: Nathaniel III died in 1763, before the Revolution]. Nathaniel III was born at Elizabeth in 1696. He moved to "Turkey", now New Providence, some time after 1737. His tombstone in the Madison graveyard is inscribed: "Here lies Capt. Nathaniel Bonnel, who departed this life Nov. ye 18th, Anno Domini 1763 in the 67th year of his age."
He married Hannah (or Joanna) Miller of Westfield, N. J., born at Elizabeth in 1702, d. Feb. 1, 1793. She was the daughter of Samuel Miller and Elizabeth Thompson. All of their children were born in Elizabeth.
Their children were: --
1. ______(b. 1720, d. 1750, m. Samuel Crane)
2. Benjamin (b. 1723, d. 1798) m. Rachel Van Winkle
3. Jane (b. 1725, d. 1735)
4. Betsy (b d. ) m. Capt. Israel Ward
5. Nathaniel IV. (b. 1731, d. 1809) m. Elizabeth Allen
6. Mary (b. 1732, d. ) m. Elijah Woodruff
7. Abigail ( b. 1735, d. 1824) m. Aaron Allen
8. John (b. 1737, d. 1817) m. Sarah Carter
9. Sarah (b. 1741, dl. 1822) m. Samuel Roberts"
This Nathaniel III is the first Nathaniel listed in Littel's First Settlers, p 46:
"NATHANIEL BONNEL, 1st, came from Long Island to Elizabethtown - was one of the first company of the "Elizabethtown Associates," and from thence he removed to Passaic River, above Chatham, and there settled. He married Hannah Miller, of Westfield, and had children:
1. Benjamin (Esq.) who married Rachel Van WInkle.
2. Nathaniel (Capt.) married, 1st, Elizabeth Allen; 2d, in 1775, Mary Simpson.
3. John married Sarah Carter.
4. Sarah married Samuel Roberts.
5. Betsey married Capt. Isaac Ward.
6. Abigail married Mr. Gardner.
7. Mary married Elijah Woodruff."
These two accounts agree in many respects, but there are a few inconsistencies:
a. Littell's first Nathaniel Bonnell is too young to be an Elizabethtown Associate. I believe he confused Nathaniel III with Nathaniel I.
b. Littell's reference to Nathaniel III coming from Long Island is puzzling. According to Day Upon Day, he came from Elizabethtown; and Nathaniel I came from New Haven to Elizabethtown.
c. Littell designates Nathaniel IV "Capt", not Nathaniel III. Surely it is Nathaniel IV who fought in the Revolutionary War. Especially since Nathaniel III died in 1763!
d. Children Jane and ____ are missing from Littell's list for Nathaniel III (=1st).
He married Hannah (Joanna) Miller.2,3 Nathaniel was born at Elizabeth, Union, New Jersey, USA, in 1697.1 He moved after 1737 at New Providence, Essex, New Jersey, USA.3 Nathaniel died on 18 November 1763 at New Jersey, USA.3 His body was interred at Madison, Morris, New Jersey, USA.3

Rev Elias Riggs [Wa76] First Settlers, p 341:
"Elias [Riggs], born 1st April, 1770, who was a presbyterian minister, and preached a few years at Perth Amboy, and came to New Providence in October, 1806, and was installed the 16th June, 1807, and continued in the ministry there till his death, which occurred the 25th February, 1825, aged 54 years, respected and beloved by all his people."
If, indeed, this lineage pans out, with Rev Elias Riggs and our BETHUEL RIGGS both descended from the same Riggs of MA, then remarkably, and surprisingly, both sides of my family would have New Providence in common in the early days.
First Settlers, p 342:
"REV. ELIAS RIGGS, (son of Preserve) married Margaret Congar, daughter of David Congar, of New Windsor, Orange county, New York, and widow of David Hudson, of Newark, who was son of David Hudson, of Mendham, brother of the wife of Preserve Riggs, and had children:

Elias was born at Mendham, Morris, New Jersey, USA, on 1 April 1770.2,3 He married Margaret Conger at Essex, New Jersey, USA, on 14 June 1808.4,5 Mary "Polly" Parrott and William Williamson were married by him at New Providence, Essex, New Jersey, USA, on 5 April 1817.6,7,8,9,10 Elias died on 25 February 1825 at New Providence, Essex, New Jersey, USA, at age 54.11,12 His body was interred after 25 February 1825 at New Providence, Essex, New Jersey, USA, at New Providence Presbyterian Church.13
