JOHN "The Pilgrin" OGDEN [Og1=Ogxxxvii] William Ogden Wheeler has written extensively on the Ogdens, and in particular, on John the Pilgrim. Here is a list of the section titles from his chapter on John:

Here are some excerpts from "Brief Early History of Elizabeth" from www.elizabethnj.org/historyBriefHistory.htm:

"On October 28, 1664, the Indians of Staten Island sold to John Bailey, Daniel Denton and Luke Watson, a tract of land lying between the Raritan River and the Passaic River, extending westward from Newark Bay. The tract extended about 34 miles between the two rivers and about 17 miles westward from Newark Bay, comprising 500,000 acres. It included what is now the City of Elizabeth.

The purchase price was 20 fathoms of trading cloth, two "made" coats, two guns, two kettles, ten bars of lead, 20 handsful of powder, and 400 fathoms of white wampum. The purchase price was payable in one year after the territory was occupied, indicating that even this small sum was difficult to meet in those early days.

Permission to purchase from the Indians was granted by Colonel Richard Nicolls who was Governor of all the territories in North America. Colonel Nicolls was Governor by virtue of appointment by the then Duke of York, who had been granted the territories in North America by King Charles the Second of England.

The deed of conveyand from the Indians was delivered on December1, 1664 to John Baker, JOHN OGDEN, John Bailey and Luke Watson (Denton having sold his interest to Baker and OGDEN). The four grantees took possession of the tract by building at least four houses before April 1665 and thus the settlement and development of Elizabeth began."

JOHN OGDEN is my (Alvy (3)) g^9 grandfather.

Another extendsive source on the Ogdens, starting with JOHN OGDEN, is Hatfield's History of Elizabeth.

Hatfield's History of Elizabeth, pp 56-7:

He is established as an original Associate of Elizabethtown:

"The most reliable statement of the names of the original Associates is found in Elizabeth Town Book, B, [the original book was lost] some fifty years after the settlement of the town, and is thus expressed:

'Richard Nicolls, by virtue of the Power and Authority vested in him by .....James (then) Duke of York &c Did thereby Grant Bargain Sell and Confirm unto Capn John Baker (then) of New York, John Odgen (then of North-Hampton, and ..... John Baily and Luke Watson, and their Associates the Premises afores^d - In ffee-simple, which same Associates (together with them the s^d Baker, Ogden, Baily, and Watson (equally seised each to a Third Lot-Right in the pmisses) were, the said John Baker, John Ogden, Jn^o Baily, and Luke Watson, and with them ...' "

He also took the following oath:

"The Oath of A Leagance and Fidelity taken by the Inhabitants of Elizabeth Town and the Jurisdiction thereof beginning the 19th February 1665.

You doe sware upon the Holy Evangelist contained in this book to have true faith and Alegiance to our Soveraing Lord King Charles the Second and his Successors and to be true and fiathful to the Lords propryetors their Successors and the Government of this Province of New Jarsey as long as you shall Continue an Inhabitant under the same without any Equivocation or Mentall Reservation shatsoever and so help you God.

Mr John Odgen sen^r
..."

Hatfield, pp 158-160: Relates how John Ogden was made "schout" [cf mayor, I believe] of Elizabethtown when the Dutch took over. Also:

"...the commission ... reported that, on the 11th of September, they had administered the oath of allegiance to the inhabitants of the several towns. They rated "Elizabethtown" at "80 men, 76 of whom have taken the oath; the remainder absent." the names are recorded as follows:

John Ogdon senior
...
Jonathan Ogdon
...
Isacq Whithead sen^r
Isacq Whithead jun^r
...
John Ogdon jun^r
Joseph Ogdon
David Ogdon
Benjamin Ogdon
...

Two more sons of John Ogden, Joseph and Benjamin, had come to years... Isaac Whitehead's son, Isaac, also..."

Also, wirth respect to his sons' coming of age, p 65:

"He [JOHN OGDEN] was among the very first, with his five full-grown goys, John, Jonathan, David, Joseph and Benjamin, to remove to the new purchase and erect a dwelling on the town-plot." So apparently there is a distinction between "come to years" and "full-grown".

Continuing, p 66:

"Three of his sons, John, Jonathan, and David, took the oath of allegiance, Feb. 1665/6, and were numbered among the original Associates. The house-lot of John, Jr., contained four acres ... He had, also, twelve acres ... also, sixty acres ... also, nine acres ..... Jonathan had a house-lot of six acres ... bounded by his younger brother, Joseph .... He had twenty two acres ... also eighty four acres ... also, fourteen acres .... David's house-lot contained five acres .... He had, in addition, sixty acres ... also eight acres ..." So it appears that JOSEPH had land at the same time as his brothers but did not take the oath and was not made Associate. Curious.

On pp 182-4 of Hatfield, we find JOHN dragging his feet about getting his property resurveyed, against his will. He was supposed to apply before 15 May 1675, but did so on 1 Oct 1678.

The Ogden Family, p 47, gives his birthdate as 1654, but as I read its argument, I believe it should be 1652. This is consistent with his being 13 in 1665 and "of age" [21] in 1673. Here is the footnote from that page:

" "Hatfield's Hist. Elizabeth" makes this early mention of Benjamin Ogden: "Two more sons of John Ogden, Joseph and Benjamin, had come to years." After speaking of other young residents, it is stated, "these all had grown to men's estate since 1665." This entry is made in 1673, showing that Benjamin was about 13 yrs. of age when he came with his father to Elizabethtown, N. J., in 1665. On Sept. 11, 1673, he was one of the Elizabethtown settlers who swore allegiance to the Dutch."

However, I do not understand the logic of his being 13 in 1665. Benjamin was born in 1654.3,4 He married Hannah Woodruff circa 1679.5,1 He made a will at Elizabethtown, Essex, New Jersey, USA, on 9 July 1722.6,7 Benjamin died on 20 November 1722 at Elizabethtown, Essex, New Jersey, USA.3,8 Benjamin's will was probated at Trenton, Mercer, New Jersey, USA, on 30 November 1722.6,9

Abraham Clark Parrott From Dale Parrott's website:

"Abraham Clark Parrott

A.C. Parrott. farmer and stock raiser in Section 14, South Platte Township, homesteaded eighty acres in 1876, and located on his farm in January, 1877. He was born in Virginia in 1853, early became familiar with the details of farm life, received his education in Ohio, and when twenty four years of age came to Hall County, Nebraska, where he engaged in farming on his present property. He erected a sod cabin in the spring of 1877, and lived in that until the fall of 1883, when he erected a good frame house, improved the place, set out an orchard and now has his farm in a good state of cultivation. He was married in Hall County, Neb, in 1879, to Miss Marion Gray, a native of Wisconsin, and the daughter of Robert and Rachel (Chambers) Gray. natives of Ogdensburg, N.Y Mr. Grey moved to Walworth County, Wis, at an early day, and in 1878 emigrated to Hall County, Neb, settling in South Platte Township, where he purchased a partly improved farm. He died in Hall County, March 20, 1888, but his wife is still living and makes her home in South Platte Township. Mrs. Parrott had three brothers in service during the late war, Dallas enlisted in the artillery, and was all through the war. His death occurred in Montana, in August, 1880. Bruce enlisted in 1863 in the cavalry, took cold, came home and died with the consumption. Leslie enlisted in 1863 in the infantry service, was in active duty for some time, and was coming home by way of the Atlantic when the vessel in which he took passage was lost with all on board. After his marriage Mr. Parrott settled where he now resides, has a well improved place, likes the State, and is one of its prominent citizens. He is not active in politics, but votes with the Republican party. To his marriage were born five children: Robert, Luda, Georgia, Ora, and Johnny (who died in infancy). Mr. Parrott is the son of Abraham and Margaret (Burchard) Parrott, natives of Ohio. After their marriage the parents settled in Virgina and remained there some time, the father engaging in teaching school. His death occurred in May, 1853. The mother died in Hall County, Neb, in January, 1889. They were the parents of six children, A.C. being the youngest. One of these children, William, was in the service, He enlisted in Company I. One hundred and Sixteenth Ohio Infantry, under Gens, Hunter and Sheridan, and was in the battles of Winchester, Cedar Creek and others. He was taken prisoner, confined at Libby, Belle Isle and Castle Thunder, and was in the prisons of the South for several months. He received a gun shot wound at Cedar Creek. Our subject was among the pioneer settlers of Hall County, and has always taken an acttive interest in all that relates to the good of the community.

HISTORY OF NEBRASKA, BIOGRAPHICAL AND HISTORICAL MEMOIRS OF NEBRASKA. ADAMS, CLAY, HALL, AND HAMILTON COUNTIES. PRINTED 1890."

This says he was born in VA in 1853. Dale Parrott's genealogy gives "b 12 Feb 1853, Coolville, Virginia-WV". There is a bit of a mystery here. It is true that WV was part of VA until 1863 - ie, when Abraham was born. But Coolville is clearly in OH, although only about 5 mi from the border of WV (formerly VA). This probably means that he was born on a farm in VA, a few miles outside of Coolville (and across a river from it!)

Glen Sanger:

"Abraham Clark Parrott, is buried in the same lot, in the Cedar View Cemetery in Doniphan, Nebraska, his wife Marion Eusevia Gray and infant son Johnnie is also buried in the same plot."
