Sen George C Humphrey He was a Senator in the Nebraska State Legislature.

From Glen Sanger evidence:

"George Humphrey served in the Civil War."

The following from the extensive Humphrey website, http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/m/o/l/Lawrence-Molcyzk-NE/:

"The following Obituary appeared in the Grand Island, Nebraska Independent, Newspaper, upon the death of Sen. George C. Humphrey (Jan. 28, 1846- June 22, 1925). Humphrey was my maternal great-great grandfather.

The Honorable George C. Humphrey, state senator for the district comprised of Hall, Howard and Greeley counties, passed away at his home at 103 East 8th Street in Grand Island Nebraska. He passed away Monday morning at 10:55 am at the age of 79 years, four months and 24 days. Arrangements for the funeral are awaiting the replies from relatives. Humphrey had been more or less ill since early in the legislative session but his condition did not become serious until about two months ago. Heart trouble was given as the cause of death.

Sen. Humphrey was born at Coolville, Ohio, Jan. 28, 1846. Both of his parents died when he was still very young. He was “bound out”. With the first family he remained until he was about 13. He spent a year with another family. Then a year and a half with a third family. About this time the Civil War was on and at the age of 15 years and nine months he enlisted for three years. At the end of the term he enlisted again and was Honorably discharged after the war. He was in 16 battles and was never wounded. He was taken prisoner and so kept as a prisoner for over a month. Then in 1866 he became a pioneer coming west. He returned to Ohio two years later for his bride, going by team and returning, on his honeymoon trip, in the same manner. During his life in the army he was engaged in the battles of Monterey, Shaws Ridge, McDowell, Franklin, Strasburgh, Cross Keys, Cedar Mountain, Freeman’s Ford, White Sulfur Springs, Waterloo Bridge, second Bill Run, Aldie and Chancellorsville, Virginia Gettysburg, PA, Camp Baldwin, Florida Gainesville and John’s Island, South Carolina.

In February 1866 he left Ohio for Junction City Kansas, where he stayed until June of that year. He went from there to in Iowa remaining there until February 1874 when he moved Nebraska. He married Ms. Margaret Jane Perot at her home near Coolville, Ohio Nov. 5th 1868. To reach his bride he drove alone with the mule team in the spring wagon from Iowa to Ohio in 22 days, and he was married and started back on Nov. 8 having his wife and her sister Carolyn along on the return journey. He arrived at his home in Iowa December 5th having spent 26 days on the way of this union there were born five sons and four daughters Charles J. of York, Nebraska, George H. of Grand Island, Paul V. of Portland, OR Thayer of Lincoln, J. Leslie of Grand Island and Gertrude of this City and Mrs. W. L. Parsons of Mason City Iowa. Two daughters Mary O. and Anna Maude have preceded him in death.

Humphrey filed on a 160 acre Homestead in the south flat Township March 4th 1874 and later purchased it from the Union Pacific railroad company, a quarter section adjoining the old Homestead. He still owns the same property. Mrs. Humphrey died February 15th 1899. to with him as his farm was rented, he moved to Grand Island in October 1901. He remarried in Omaha Jan. 181902, Mrs. Charlotte the flowers, who died March 13th 1916. There were no children by the second wife. Mr. Humphrey has held the following offices in whole county: member county Board of Supervisors 1894 to 1895: represented the 27th session of Nebraska Legislature, 1901, deputy collector Internal Revenue Service, district of Nebraska 1902 to 1915 inclusive a period of service lasting 13 years in seven months. He was elected Hall County assessor of Hall County in the fall of 1916 for the term of four years

He was brought minded and generous. Ever since its organization Mr. Humphrey has been deeply interested and a oil member of the grand army of the republic. He attended nearly all of the encampments and became prominent in the department of Nebraska. He was commander of the Nebraska department for 1915 through 1916 and was prominently mentioned in several national encampments. He was also a member of the I 0 0 F. of Doniphan, Lodge No. 86. He was a member of the Doniphant Deuel chapter No. 11 R. A. M.: Mount Lebanon commandery No. 6, Knights Templar, AOUW, and Modern Woodmen.

In politics Mr. Humphrey was a staunch Republican. of the he was just old enough to cast his first full for Abraham Lincoln in 1864. Like every other man in public life he met at times with divisions of opinion but he was always fair when an majority. He was awful he was always cheerful in the acceptance of results when the mine or went in the minority. He had goodwill towards all.

In religion he was a member of the congregation will church. He was interested in all civic affairs. He was a very generous financial support or for every good public movement. In a recent sketch of him published in the independent he was quoted as saying that in the evening of his life it was his privilege to look back upon a wonderfully well spent in perfect day. The Bibical benediction, “Well

done good and faithful servant is today also certainly applicable."o. George was born at Coolville, Athens, Ohio, USA, on 28 January 1846.1,3 He married Margaret Jane Parrott at Her home near Coolville, Coolville, Athens, Ohio, USA, on 5 November 1868.2,4 He married Charlotte D Flowers at Omaha, Douglas, Nebraska, USA, on 18 January 1902.5
