Benjamin is probably his brother, d 1790.

This places the four brothers in New Brunswick, Benjamin for the latter date only (Jun 1780) and the other three on both dates (Apr 1779 and Jun 1780). He resided at New Brunswick, Middlesex, New Jersey, USA, in April 1779, North Ward.³ He resided at New Brunswick, Middlesex, New Jersey, USA, in June 1780, North Ward.³ He married Catharine Pitt on 6 November 1780.² James died at New Jersey, USA.^2,1 James's will was probated at Middlesex, New Jersey, USA, on 23 March 1781.¹

     She married James Ogden [Og367] on 6 November 1780.¹

     Phebe was born on 22 October 1749.^1,2 She was baptized at First Presbyterian, New York City, New York, New York, USA, after 22 October 1749. Religion: Presbyterian.^1,2

     Pvt Benjamin Ogden [Og369] NJ Calendar of Wills, 1781-1785, p 293:

"1781, March 23. Ogden, James, of Middlesex Co. Int. Adm'r - Benjamin Ogden. Fellowbondsman - William Ryder; both of said Co. Witness - Joseph Robinson. Lib. 24, p. 72."

Benjamin is almost surely James's brother, d 1790. So this places him in Middlesex Co 23 Mar 1781.

This places the four brothers in New Brunswick, Benjamin for the latter date only (Jun 1780) and the other three on both dates (Apr 1779 and Jun 1780).

Ogden Family, p 148:

"BENJAMIN OGDEN ... b Oct. 27, 1751; d. bet. Feb. 1 and Mar. 1, 1790; m. LEAH ____ [list of children]"

NJ Newspaper Notices, p 351:

"17 August 1790
...
William Ryder and James Drake, New Brunswick, adv. for sale a farm, late the property of Benjamin Ogden, deceased, in Middlesex County, upwards of 200 acres on South River about a mile and a half from its mouth, with a shad fishery."

So clearly Benjamin lived in Middlesex Co on the farm described, and two of his sons-in-law are taking care of the sale of the property.

Apparently JOHN and brother Benjamin were Privates in the NJ Militia. Stryker has the following under State Troops and Militia, Privates, pp 706-7:

"OGDEN, BENJAMIN. Middlesex.
...
OGDEN, JOHN. Middlesex."

This is not much to go on, and I have no corroborating evidence that these are indeed our Benjamin and JOHN but time and place indicate so. The NARA has Revolutionary War service records for Pvt Benjamin Ogden and for both a Lt John Ogden and a Pvt JOHN OGDEN (making an assumption based on slim evidence). Here is Benjamin's; see JOHN for his.

     JOSEPH OGDEN 2d [Og19] From The Ogden Family by W O Wheeler, p 60:

"JOSEPH OGDEN, 2D (Joseph, John), b. _____; d. Jan. 1720; m. _____ JOANNA BAKER, b. July 7, 1681; d. _____.

The proprietors of East New Jersey deeded land in Elizabethtown to JOSEPH OGDEN on Jan. 20, 1697-8. On Mar. 15 of that year he gave receipt for his share of his father's estate.

He subscribed L[pounds]00-6-9 to the minister, Rev. John Harriman's support, Mar. 11, 1700-1; the same year he joined with others in a petition to the King for a more suitable Governor."

The "others" including notably, his cousin Jonathan Ogden, 2d (see pp 57-58 for further info on this rowdy event").

The Family Group Record evidence does not list Nathaniel as a child, but two IGI Records do so, and so does Wheeler's book.

East Jersey Deeds, pp 278-9:

"1697-8 Jan. 20. Confirmation to Joseph Ogden, son and heir of Joseph Ogden of Elizabeth Towne dec'd, in right of his late father, of 90 acres in said town, as follows: 1, a lot, S. E. Benjamin Price senior, S. W. Benj. Price junior, N. E. the great meadow, N. W. unsurveyed; 2, a piece of the great meadow, S. Isaac Whitehead and Jonathan Ogden, E. Joseph Bond, N. and W. unsurveyed meadow; 3, another piece by Oyster Creek, E. Benjamin Price senior, W. Isaac Whitehead, N. said creek, S. unsurveyed."
JOSEPH was born at Elizabethtown, Essex, New Jersey, USA, circa 1677.^2,5 He bought property at Elizabethtown, Essex, New Jersey, USA, on 20 January 1698.^4,3 He married JOANNA BAKER circa 1705.^1,2,6 JOSEPH died in January 1720 at Elizabethtown, Essex, New Jersey, USA.^2,7

     JOANNA BAKER From The Ogden Family by W O Wheeler, p 60:

"JOSEPH OGDEN, 2D (Joseph, John), b. _____; d. Jan. 1720; m. _____ JOANNA BAKER, b. July 7, 1681; d. _____."

She is listed as "Of Elizabeth, Essex, New Jersey" in the Joseph-Joanna family group sheet evidence.

An LDS Individual Record (AFN: M3K1-BC) has as her parents both John BAKER - Alice or Ann Pearse or PIERCE and(!) Nathaniel BAKER - Catharine (Catalyntje) SCHELLINGER. As we shall see below, the John BAKER - Ann PIERCE parentage seems unlikely.

An old manuscript genealogy by Francis Hatfield (of History of Elizabeth NJ fame), Genealogy of John Ogden and His Brother Richard Ogden of New Jersey (undated), in the NY Historical Society library has the following note:

"Joseph Ogden b ab 1657 m. ... Joann (dau. of Nathaniel) Baker of E. Hampton, L.I. She was b. 7.7.1681.2 d. [unreadable]"

Joanna and Joseph Ogden are proved to within the reliability of the Ogden Book, but her connection to putative parents John and Alice (Pierce or Pearse) Baker is in doubt. Since this connection might bring in the whole Plymouth Colony connection, it should be taken with caution, until further evidence or stronger evidence is found.

In this regard, I have located a reference to a John Baker in Elizabethtown in 1702 in Dawes-Gates II:543: "... on September 11, 1702, he [John Little] witnessed the will of John Baker of Elizabeth." This is more likely Joanna's father (if indeed her father's name is John) than the John Baker of Yarmouth MA. This reference points to the sources History of Elizabeth, NJ, E F Hatfield, 1868, and to Calendar of Historical Manuscripts at Albany NY, E B O'Callaghan, 1866, and to the New Jersey Archives, Ser. I, XXI and XXX.

Of course, Capt John Baker is one of the four original Patentees of Elizabethtown, along with JOHN OGDEN and two others, pp 32-3 of Hatfield, and pp 63-4. This John d 1702 (cf paragraph above), had a wife and 8 "other Persons" in his family. Hatfield also records, p 312, a John Baker in Elizabethtown in 1729, listed in the Index as John Baker Jr.

On the Francis Baker website, I found a Joanna Baker, granddaughter of Francis Baker. She is daughter of William B Baker m Mercy Lawrence, not John Baker m Alice Pierce. Furthermore, she is b 18 Feb 1706 in Yarmouth MA, and m 25 Sep 1726 to Michael Phillips in Harwich, Barnstable, MA. It's looking very grim for John-Alice or Francis-Isabel. NB William B Baker's first wife was Mary Pierce. So, it appears that the Francis Baker and Abraham Pierce families were combined and did generate a Joanna Baker, but she cannot be ours. Wrong place, wrong time. This casts grave doubt on the John-Alice family group sheet evidence.

I am still doubtful as to the Nathaniel BAKER- Catharine SCHELLINGER parentage too. However, their LI location seems more consistent with the Ogden family than the other putative parents with their MA connection.

JOANNA was born at ?Elizabethtown, New Jersey, USA, on 7 July 1681.^5,6,7 She married JOSEPH OGDEN 2d [Og19] circa 1705.^8,5,9 JOANNA died on 26 May 1714 at age 32.^5,4

     Joanna Ogden [Og96] Ogden Family, p 89, lists their children as: John, Joanna, Rebecca, Mary, Hannah, Phebe, and Eunice Meeker:

"JOANNA OGDEN (...), bap. June 2, 1706; d. _____; m. ... JOHN MEEKER, JR., b. _____; d. _____; son of John Meeker and ..., Hannah Ogden, his wife."

John Meeker is Joanna's 2d cousin.

NJ Will 1761-1770, p 311 [for her brother Joseph]:

"1761, April 22. Ogden, Joseph, of Borough of Elizabeth, Essex Co., cordwainer; will of. Wife, Esther. ... To children of my sister, Johannah, deceased, the other 1/2, viz., John Meeker, Joanna Baldwin (the wife of Nathan Baldwin), Rebecca Squire (the wife of David Squire), Mary Potter (the wife of Amos Potter), Hannah Hicks (the wife of Samuel Hicks), Phebe Meeker (the wife of Stephen Meeker), and Unis Alling (daughter of John Alling), share and share alike. ... Proved May 30, 1761. Lib. H, p. 63."

This will is the only clue we have that Joanna married a second time, because Eunice Alling is listed as both a child of Joanna and a dau of John Alling.

NJ Cal of Wills, 1730-1750, pp 329-30:

"1730, Dec. 24. Meeker, John, Jun'r, of Elizabeth Town, Essex Co., cooper; will of. Children - Joanna, Rebekah and Mary, all under age. Expected child. Real and personal estate. Executors - wife, Joanna, and relatives, Robert Ogden, Esq., and James Meeker. Witnesses - Samuel Whitehead, Joseph Chandler, Stephen Hindes. Proved March 22, 1730-1. Lib. B, p. 198."

So John and Joanna had 4 children before he died. This calls Wheeler's entry for No 96 Joanna Ogden into full question because:
1. It has 7 children for the pair; 2. John is not listed in the will so he is either the expected child, in which case his birthdate has to be wrong, or he is not John's son (unlikely given his name); 3. finally, John Alling, second husband, is not mentioned (and he is starting to look very likely).


She was baptized on 2 June 1706. Religion: (an unknown value). Probably Elizabethtown NJ.³ She married John Meeker Jr [Og91] before 24 December 1730. Husband's will date 24 Dec 1730..^4,2 She married ?John Alling after 24 December 1730. Her first husband's will dated 24 Dec 1730.^5,6 Joanna died before 22 April 1761. She is "deceased" in her father's will of 22 Apr 1761.^7,8,9

     John was born. He See text for his wife Joanna Ogden for his will and questioning of whether Phebe and Hannah are his children. He married Joanna Ogden [Og96] before 24 December 1730. Husband's will date 24 Dec 1730..^2,1 He made a will at Elizabethtown, Essex, New Jersey, USA, on 24 December 1730.¹ John died before 18 February 1731. "Grandson, John Meeker, onlyh son of son John, deceased." Will dated 18 Feb 1730, which I am assuming is old style, given the other dates in the same source (eg, inventory of estate is made 17 Mar 1730-1)..³ John's will was probated at Elizabethtown, Essex, New Jersey, USA, on 22 March 1731.¹

     JOSEPH OGDEN [Og5] The Ogden Family by W O Wheeler, p 47:

"JOSEPH OGDEN (John), b. Nov. 9, 1642 (?); d. before Jan. 15, 1690; m. _____SARAH WHITEHEAD, b. _____; d. _____; dau. of Isaac Whitehead.

JOSEPH OGDEN is named in 'Hatfield's Hist. Elizabeth' as one of the 'five full grown boys' of John Ogden who came with their father to Elizabethtown, N. J. in 1665, being fourth in the list. For probable birthdate, see under No. 77, John Ogden, p. 76. About Dec., 1667, Joseph and Jonathan Ogden and many others petitioned the Governor and Council to have their lands laid out to them 'according to the Agreements made by the inhabitants and consent of the Governor with them, as may more fully appear in the Town Records.'

On Oct. 27, 1676, Joseph applied for his allotment of 90 a. of land according to the concessions, and upon this date Gov. Carteret granted a warrant for the same. Action was delayed, for on May 14, 1683, Joseph petitioned the Council for the 90 a. which he had formerly 'pitcht upon.' The record then states, 'It is ordered that Joseph Ogden give an accompt to this board wherefore the late Surveyor gen'all Executed not a Warr(t) of this quantity of Land the 27th Oct. 1676 And alsoe of the Land he pitches upon that the Councell may give their further resolution in the p(r)mises.' Later, July 14, 1684, the Surveyor General was directed to 'lay out and survey unto the said Joseph Ogden Ninety acres of Upland and Meadow in proportion.'

In 1682 he is named as one of the overseers of his father, John Ogden's will."

The item 77 on p 76, mentioned above:

"... agrees with record in an old Bible owned by Mrs. Cortland Drake of Mendham, N.J., and which was doubtless the family Bible of 'Good Old John.' [John, The Pilgrim] It descended to John through his gr. father Janathan, son of John [The Pilgrim]. On a blank page at the beginning of te Book of Psalms is written 'Jonathan Ogden, his book 1697.' In another place 'John Ogden son of Jonathan Ogden Dec'd His Bible given him by his grandfather Ogden in the year 1724.' At the end of Revelations is 'Nov. 9 1642, my son [name unreadable] was born by gods providence.' This birthdate is probably that of his son Joseph, - at all events proving that this rare old Bible printed in 1599 was once the property of John Ogden [The Pilgrim]."

So this would make 9 Nov 1642 Joseph's birthdate, and this is probably the source of the information recorded in the IGI. But notice the doubt in this date. The footnote on p 47 of Ogden Family quotes Hatfield that JOSEPH [and others] "had grown to men's estate since 1665", this written in 1673. This means that JOSEPH would have to have been born aft 1644 (but before 1652), inconsistent with the biblical date above.

So far as the birthplace is concerned, Wheeler says "America". Under son John Ogden, Jr's entry he has the following:

"His father, John Ogden, Sr., was one of the immigrants who grought their families to eastern Long Island, probably landing at Southampton early in the year 1640. The family is supposed to have soon removed to Stamford, Conn., where they remained about three years, and then returned to Long Id., being in Hempstead in 1644, and again at Southampton in 1647. From this locality he moved with the family to Elizabethtown, N.J., in 1665."

If this is accurate and if JOSEPH's 1642 birthdate is accurate, then his birthplace would be Stamford, CT. If 1644, then Hempstead NY, and if 1650, then North Sea NY. So the best we can do is state CT or LI, NY. In any case, Elizabethtown, NJ, and Bradley Plain, England, the two IGI birthplaces must both be wrong.

Hatfield's History of Elizabeth, pp 158-160 adds JOSEPH's name to a list of oath takers. See text for his father for the details. This indicates that he came of age between 1665 and 1673. But, it appears that he was 23 in 1665, so perhaps "coming of age" was not the reason for his name not appearing then.

Furthermore, on Hatfield pp 122-123, JOSEPH petitions for a resurvey of his land. Hatfield dates this petition "in the early part of December, 1667". So presumably, JOSEPH had come of age by then, being a landowner. We know, from p 91 of Hatfield that JOSEPH's land bordered some of that of Benjamin Price Jr, and, from p 89, some of that of John Parker.

On pp 182-4 of Hatfield, we find JOSEPH dragging his feet about getting his property resurveyed, against his will. He was supposed to apply before 15 May 1675, but did so on 27 Oct 1676.

"1690-1 Jan. 15. Letters of administration on the estate of Joseph Ogden of Elizabeth Town dec'd intestate, granted to his wife Sarah [page] 261"

NJ Calendar of Wills, 1670-1730, p 345:

"1690 June 25. Ogden, Joseph, of Elizabeth Town. Inventory of the personal estate of (L167.15.6); made by Isack Whitehead and William Elisson. Essex Wills

1690-1 Jan. 15. Administration on the estate granted to his widow Sarah. N. J. Archives, XXI, p. 183." JOSEPH was born at Stamford, CT or LI, NY, on 9 November 1642.^1,2,6 He moved in 1665 at Elizabethtown, Essex, New Jersey, USA.⁷ He took an oath of allegiance at Elizabethtown, Essex, New Jersey, USA, on 11 September 1673.⁸ He married SARAH WHITEHEAD before 1677.^9,1,10,11,5 JOSEPH died before 25 June 1690 at Elizabethtown, Essex, New Jersey, USA.^1,12,4,5 JOSEPH's will was probated at Elizabethtown, Essex, New Jersey, USA, on 25 June 1690.^4,13

     SARAH WHITEHEAD Vital Records of New Haven, p 12.

" SARAH was born at New Haven, New Haven, Connecticut, USA, on 3 January 1656.^5,2,3,6 As of before 1677,her married name was OGDEN.^7,8,5,9,10 She married JOSEPH OGDEN [Og5] before 1677.^8,5,9,7,10 As of before 10 December 1702,her married name was Brown.¹¹ She married William Brown before 10 December 1702.¹¹ As of before 1705,her married name was Sayer.¹¹ She married Francis Sayer before 1705.¹¹ She married Azariah Crane before 3 March 1721.¹²

     ?JOHN BAKER The marriage should be accepted with caution until further evidence is found because the Pierce family of the Plymouth Colony is brought in through the wife [Abraham Pierce or Pearse was on the Anne, the third ship into Plymouth Colony with colonists, in 1623, according to the Stratton source]. The uncertainty of the wife's name adds to the caution, as does the marriage date in this evidence, of 1712, which is after all the children are born, including Joanna (b 1681), and which is the death date for John!

That Francis Baker m Isabel Twining had a son John is not in doubt. Whether it is our John Baker is the question. See text with Joanna Baker, putative daughter of John Baker. ?JOHN was born at Yarmouth, Barnstable, Massachusetts, USA, on 1 May 1645.^1,2 He married ?ALICE (?ANN) PIERCE (PEARSE) at Yarmouth, Barnstable, Massachusetts, USA, before 3 June 1673. The John-Alice Baker family group sheet evidence lists 1712 as the marriage date, but this is after all 10 children listed are born. Their birthdays extend from 1672 to about 1685..^3,1,4 ?JOHN died on 2 July 1712 at Sandwich, Barnstable, Massachusetts, USA, at age 67.¹ His body was interred at South Dennis, Barnstable, Massachusetts, USA.¹

     ?ALICE (?ANN) PIERCE (PEARSE) p 338: In an article on Abraham Pierce: "He died before 3 June 1673, when administration of his estate was given to his son Abraham, Jr., who granted twenty-two acres of land to his brother Isaac, and twenty shillings each to his sisters Rebecca Wills, Mary Baker, and Alice Baker (PCR 5:116-17). There is a published, but inadequately documented family history, Ebenezer W. Peirce, The Pierce Family of the Old Colony: or the Lineal Descendants of Abraham Peirce, Who Came to America as Early as 1623 (1870)."

PCR 5:116-17 refers to "Records of the Colony of New Plymouth in New England", edited by Nathaniel B Shurtleff and David Pulsifer, 12 volumes (Boston, 1855-61; reprinted as 12 volumes in 6 books, New York, 1968). ..."our most valuable source of knowledge for the history of Plymouth Colony" according to Stratton, author of "Plymouth Colony: Its History & People: 1620-1691".

The John-Alice Baker family group sheet evidence lists only "Of Yarmouth, Barnstable, Ma" as her birthplace, so it might well not be. It also lists her deathdate as 1673, before the 1712 marriage date it also lists!

Finally, it lists her name as "Alice Or Ann Pierce or Pearse (Pierce)". The trustworthy "Plymouth Colony: Its History & People 1620-1691" mentions that Abraham Pierce has a daughter (p 338) Alice Baker, so that spelling is used here.

See text for Joanna Baker, which casts further doubt on this John-Alice family connection. She was christened at Barnstable, Massachusetts, USA, on 21 July 1650. The evidence gives "Barnstable, Barnstable, Ma" as the place..¹ ?ALICE was born at Yarmouth, Barnstable, Massachusetts, USA, on 21 July 1650.¹ She married ?JOHN BAKER at Yarmouth, Barnstable, Massachusetts, USA, before 3 June 1673. The John-Alice Baker family group sheet evidence lists 1712 as the marriage date, but this is after all 10 children listed are born. Their birthdays extend from 1672 to about 1685..^3,1,4 ?ALICE died in 1673 at Yarmouth, Barnstable, Massachusetts, USA. Death date looks suspicious relative the better founded marriage date (actually the date her father's estate is divided up)..¹

     Joseph Ogden 3d [Og97] Ogden Family p 60:

"JOSEPH OGDEN, 3D, b. 1709; d. Apr. 29, 1761; m. Feb. 17, 1734-5, ESTHER (Conklin) BAKER, dau. of Lewis Conklin, of Easthampton, L. I., and wid. of David Baker. She was bap. at Easthampton, Sept. 3, 1704. (No record of children.)"

NJ Will 1761-1770, p 311:

"1761, April 22. Ogden, Joseph, of Borough of Elizabeth, Essex Co., cordwainer; will of. Wife, Esther, 1/3 of personal and use of my real estate. To First Presbyterian Church of Elizabeth Town, L100. My brother, Daniel Ogden, 1/2 of the rest of moveables. To children of my sister, Johannah, deceased, the other 1/2, viz., John Meeker, Joanna Baldwin (the wife of Nathan Baldwin), Rebecca Squire (the wife of David Squire), Mary Potter (the wife of Amos Potter), Hannah Hicks (the wife of Samuel Hicks), Phebe Meeker (the wife of Stephen Meeker), and Unis Alling (daughter of John Alling), share and share alike. Since no children are mentioned in this will, presumably there were none.

Oddly, brother Nathaniel is not mentioned at all. He lived in New Brunswick and New York City and was, we believe, still alive in 1761.
Joseph was born in 1709.^3,4,5 He married Esther Conklin on 17 February 1734.⁴ He made a will at Elizabethtown, Essex, New Jersey, USA, on 22 April 1761.⁶ Joseph died on 29 April 1761 at Elizabethtown, Essex, New Jersey, USA.^3,4 His body was interred at Elizabethtown, Essex, New Jersey, USA, at Presbyterian Burying Grounds.⁷ Joseph's will was probated at Elizabethtown, Essex, New Jersey, USA, on 30 May 1761.⁶

     He married Mary (?).¹ Daniel was born. Family record sheet gives ca 1704..² Daniel died after 22 April 1761. Will of his father dated 22 Apr 1761.³
