Louvencia (Lourencia) Elvirene Weaver1,2,3,4
F, b. 8 October 1829, d. 15 December 1927
Father | Cannon Roar "C R" Weaver |
Mother | Abigail Bolton (Bolten) |
Louvencia (Lourencia) Elvirene Weaver Shady Grove Cemetery listing: "Baker, Elvirene - wife of J. S. - Oct. 8, 1830 - Dec. 15, 1928"
Shoe Cobbler's Kin lists here as Elverene Elizabeth, but descendant Wesley C Smith has her as Louvencia Elvirene. When quizzed about her name, he gave this answer (email 14 May 2001):
"Elvirene was always called by her middle name and the family was mostly illiterate, so her first name was never written except by census takers or on some legal papers. Most of my family has it as Louvincia as it is on her Confederate Widow's application. The census records are very hard to decipher. In 1850, her mother called her Loriny, which was mis-read by a transcriber as Loving. On some census records it is Laurancy or Lorancy. Her name could have been Lourincia. So, take your choice. Perhaps it's best to just call her Elvirene! One thing I'm sure of, her name was not Elizabeth unless she had a third name she never used.
Evidently, the confusion comes from some unknown historian who received some bad info and recorded it and that was picked up by others. Lorena Eaker, Alice Baker Gentry, Jim Lair, among others have used this. They also have Cannon R. Weaver, Elvirene's father, as Cannon O. Weaver. It is C.R. or Cannon R. on his pension application, tax records, census records, and on the documentation that I sent you. I don't know where the O. comes from, but it persists. Many of them have Cannon's wife as Abigale Coley, but he says in his pension application that he "married Abigail Bolten in Humphreys Co., TN".
Another thing that many have wrong is Elvirene's death date. I understand it is even off by one year on her gravestone. I have the death announcement from the Berryville newspaper which says: DIED - At the home of her daughter, Mrs. I. P. Price, 2 miles west of Berryville, Arkansas, Thursday, December 15, 1927, at 4:00 a.m. -- Mrs. J. S. Baker - aged 98 yrs., 2 months, and 7 days." Louvencia was born at Near Memphis, Memphis, Shelby, Tennessee, USA, on 8 October 1829.5,6,3,4 She married John Sherman Baker in 1854.7 Louvencia died on 15 December 1927 at Home of dau Mrs I P Price, Carroll, Arkansas, USA, at age 98.7,1,4 Her body was interred at Carroll, Arkansas, USA, at Shady Grove Cemetery.1
