ABIGAIL [= Widow Clark] SHIPMAN1,2,3

F, d. before 17 March 1787
     ABIGAIL [= Widow Clark] SHIPMAN WFT Vol.2 Tree #1087 gives her surname as SHOPMAN, but the Passaic Valley First Settlers book also Arlien Sifleet's notes give its as SHIPMAN.

See the text for her husband WILLIAM PARROTT to see the argument for SHIPMAN. She was Daniel Clark's 2d wife and widow and came to the marriage having had 5 children.

There is an interesting candidate for ABIGAIL SHIPMAN who was in the right area at about the right time. She was daughter of Benjamin Shipman and Charity Morris, and was born 7 Nov 1735. Her next oldest sibling, Stephen, was born 23 Apr 1738 in Newark, Essex Co, NJ. They were Presbyterians. I have no evidence that this is our ABIGAIL, however. Source: www.familysearch.org.

There are two ABIGAIL SHIPMANs, p 376, First Settlers, to be considered, but neither is mentioned as Daniel Clark's wife. Furthermore, the first Abigail Shipman here gets married in 1772 (too late) and moves to Kentucky and the second one gets married in 1817 [way too late]. So neither of these is our Abigail.

Another ABIGAIL SHIPMAN I have found, but probably too remote to be ours, is daughter of Stephen Shipman, of Glastonbury CT, d 20 Jan 1746-7, will date 1 Jul 1746, wife Mary, sons Daniel, Stephen, Jonathan, David, daughters Mary, Hannah, and Abigail, will recorded 3 Mar 1746-7 (Probate Records of CT). I have no evidence relating this Abigail to ABIGAIL. ABIGAIL was born.4 She married Daniel Clark before 1740.5,6 As of before 1740,her married name was Clark.6,5 She married WILLIAM PARROTT after 21 April 1756.2,7,8 Her married name was PARROTT.2,7 ABIGAIL died before 17 March 1787 at Essex, New Jersey, USA.5,9,10

  6. [S12] John Littell, First Settlers, Passaic Valley, Using information from First Settlers I have deduced several things from this complicated argument:

    1. James Doty b 16 Jan 1756
    2. So father John Doty m2 Sarah Clark > 16 Jan 1756
    3. Their 1st child Daniel Doty b 23 Mar 1765
    4. So John Doty m2 Sarah Clark < 23 Jun 1765
    5. So they married sometime in range 16 Jan 1756 - 23 Jun 1765
    6. I will use 1765 under the assumption that they had children immediately upon marriage

    7. Assume Sarah Clark was at least 16 years old at marriage to Doty
    8. So Sarah Clark b <= 1749 from Daniel Clark's 1st wife

    9. Then Daniel Clark's 1st wife died and he m2 Abigail Shipman
    10. So Daniel m2 Abigail >= 1749

    11. Then Daniel and Abigail had 5 children. 4 of them (at least) married. The marriage dates are 1771-1776.
    12. Assume they all married at >= 16 yrs of age. Then the earliest birth had to be <= 1756.
    13. So Daniel m2 Abigail in the 1749-1756 range.

    14. Daniel then died and William m Abigail.
    15. William and Abigail had their 1st child William Jr 21 Sep 1760
    16. Again assume that the children came immediately upon marriage.
    17. So William m Abigail 1759-1760.

    18. So Daniel died before 1759-1760.

     Stephanus Clark Half-brother to THOMAS PARROTT.

First Settlers, p 75:

"Stephanus, who married, 28th May, 1776, Keziah Doty, daughter of George, and removed to the State of Ohio."

"STEPHANUS CLARK, (4th child of Daniel) and Keziah Doty, had children:

1. Polly, who married Jeremiah H. Osborn, 3d March, 1795, as his 2d wife. ... 2. Israel; 3. Elmer; 4. Sally."

and on pp 501-2:

"STEPHANUS CLARK, (son of Daniel) and Keziah Doty, had children:

1. Polly, who married Jeremiah H. Osborn, in Ohio, as his second wife....
2. Debby married John Bridge, son of Benjamin.
3. Sally is unmarried; lives at the Wabash, Indiana.
4. David married Phebe Allen, daughter of Joseph....
5. Israel married _____ _____.
6. Elmer, who is a new light preacher."

Curiously, on p 141: "Betsey [Doty] married, 22d March, 1794, Stephanus Clark, Jun., and went to Ohio. [See Stephanus Clark]." But the Stephanus Clark entries do not mention Stephanus Clark Jr. I will list him as Stephanus Clark's son but leave the question of his mother open.

"THOMAS SCUDDER, brother of Richard, lived where George Townley lately lived and owned that farm of 100 acres, sold to Mr. Townley, and with his family removed to the west. He married, 5th April, 1773, Abigail Clark, daughter of Daniel Clark ... and had children:

1. Sarah, who married, 10th September, 1793, Nathaniel Jennings, son of Jacob. ...
2. Jotham; 3. Abigail, who married _____; 4. Ruth; 5. Clark;
6: Jane baptized 24th September, 1789; 7. Daniel Clark.

Old Mrs. Scudder, the mother of Richard and Thomas Scudder, died 10th April, 1784."

From New Providence Presbyterian Records, Baptisms, for 1785:

"Scudder, Sarah, Jotham, Abigail & Ruth, children of Th^s., "on his wife's Account", Oct. 28."

For 1787:

"Scudder, a child of Thomas, "on his wife's account", April 8. "Named _____".

For 1789:

"Scudder, Jayne, daughter of Th^s., "on his wife's Account", Sept. 24."

For 1795:

"Scudder, Daniel Clark, son of Th^s., "on his wife's Account", Oct. 18."
