Amanda Durand [Du356]

F, b. 14 October 1812
FatherAndrew Durand [Du135] b. 4 Apr 1787
Amanda Durand [Du356] There is an LDS marriage record for Amanda Durand to William Brown, 23 Nov 1846, Kane, IL that might be this Amanda (and spouse ? Brown), although the date seems a bit late for an 1812 birth.

There is a History of Rosedale Township, Jersey Co, IL that has the following item:

"William Sherman Brown was born in the town of Marion, Wayne County, Ill., March 16, 1822. He lived in his native county until 16 years of age, then removed with his father, John Brown, to Coles County. In 1843 they moved to Hancock County, and one year later to DePage County. He was married in Kane County, in 1847, to Amanda Durand. In 1854 he removed to Jersey County, and settled in Grafton, from whence he moved to his present location in Rosedale Township. He is engaged in raising grain and stock and carries on general farming. Mr. and Mrs. Brown have four children living -- Spaulding E., Laura F., William M. and Mary H. He is a member of the Baptist church, and has had the office of road commissioner, but is no seeker of office."

And the Jersey Co, IL Query Page, USGenWeb has this query, but the poster can no longer be reached at the given address:

"I'm descended from William Sherman Brown (1822-1898) and wife Amanda (Durand) Brown (1823-1895). Their children included Spaulding (1849-1911), Laura (c.1853-c.1893) and William (1858-1925). Laura married Alpheus N. Thoroman, my ancestor. All of the above are buried in the Hartford Cemetery in Grafton. ... Eric Thoroman eric@imediainc.com"

These three sources hang together nicely but the 1823 birthdate for Amanda does not correspond to our Amanda's 1812 birthdate, which might be in error, I suppose. She married (?) Brown.1 Amanda was born on 14 October 1812.2

George (or David) Durand [Du357]

M, b. 2 February 1814
FatherAndrew Durand [Du135] b. 4 Apr 1787
George (or David) Durand [Du357] Appear to have a problem here. Durand and Beach give David b 1814 with children George and Margaret. The 1850 IL Census gives the following:

"George Durand, born 1815 NY married Margaret, born 1814 NY or NJ
George W. Durand, born 1847 Illinois
Margaret Durand, born 1850 Illinois
(1850 Illinois, Jersey, Grafton Census) Not proven this is right family yet. (this a note from Carly Basped)"

This appears to match in every aspect except George being David. Could he be George David Durand?

Independent information, from George W's gravestone and from the Fairmount cemetery listing online gives his birth as 16 Aug 1847 IL. This matches. Durand Family gives David's sister as Nancy living in Grafton, IL (Nancy Durand [Du359]). He married Margaret (?). George was born on 2 February 1814.1 George was listed as the head of a family on the in 1850 Census at Grafton, Jersey, Illinois, USA.2

Almira Durand [Du360] d in infancy, according to Durand Family (and Beach, 228). However there is a marriage record for an "Almina Durant" in the Records of the Rev. John Daniel Shafer, Schoharie County, New York, 1819-1838", compiled by Lawrence V Rickard, 18:

1830: "7 Mar Ephraim Young ae 21, Middleburgh, blacksmith [277] Almina Durant ae 19, Schoharie, sponsors: Jacob Young of Schoharie"

which fits Almira Durand rather well. And, in fact, she did NOT die young, but had six children with Ephraim.

That Almira (and Amanda her sister) did not die young is supported by the 1850 US Census for Summit, Schoharie Co, NY which shows Harriet Durand living with David and Amanda Orr and with Ephraim and Almira Young and five of their children. Almira was born on 10 December 1811.3,4 She married Ephraim Young at Schoharie, New York, USA, on 7 March 1830.5

     Treat Durand [Du361] Durand Family, p 140:

"Treat Durand was for some years High Sheriff of Schoharie County, N.Y."

History of Schoharie Co, by William E Roscoe:

Under "Sherriffs", ch 6:

"Treat Durand, elected Nov., 1848 [for 3 yrs]"

Ch 11:

"Beside furnishing such worthy representatives, the town has not been backward in adding to the list of officials such men as Treat Durand, John Moran, John Sawyer as sheriffs of the County, whom we remember as far back as 1850, as being the business and progressive men of summit village."

Ch 19, "Durand's Joke":

"Benjamin Young, a brother of Gideon, Sr., before mentioned, built a house and kept a tavern in 1808 where Ira Young now resides. For many years the usual sports of horse racing, wrestling, flip drinking, card playing and many other immoral customs were tolerated seven days in a week. Uncle Ben, as he was familiarly called, was quite a horseman and kept his horses sleek and lively. Treat Durand, afterwards Sheriff of the County, lived with Uncle Ben and rode his horses while running, being a small lad. He was not satisfied with his daily fare as it consisted of too much johnny cake and supawn to suit his aspiring stomach. One day there being a crowd of bystanders and a challenge given to Uncle Ben to run horses, he requested Treat to bring out the horse and "run him." The horse not making very good time, being rather inactive, Uncle Ben asked Treat "Vat ish te mather of dee hoss?" "I don't know," replied Treat, "unless he has been fed too much johnny cake."

Young's rage knew no bounds, but the laughter from the crowd soon opened his understanding and the flip was passed at his expense, with "tam leetle tival" as a commendation for Treat's ready answer."

Under "Supervisors", ch 22:

"1858 -- Treat Durand"

Under "Names of Citizens Who Assisted and Contributed Toward the Publication of the History of Schoharie County, With Personal Statistics":

"Durand Treat, p o remington, Jasper county, Ind."

[I believe that this is where Treat Durand lived at the time of the compilation of the history book - ie, that p o stands for post office. Nearly all of the other (hundreds of) contributors lived in Schoharie Co, as would be expected. All the addresses begin with p o.]

Gazetteer of Schoharie Co, 1872-3:

"DURAND, Treat, (Schoharie) prop. of the celebrated hub and spoke factory, saw and planing"

Durand Family has Treat's wife assigned the wrong parents, I believe. The assigned parents, Reuben C Wetmore and Martha Olmsted, are her brother and sister-in-law, according to LDS records. Both are children of Reuben B Wetmore and Sylvia Howard. The Wetmore Genealogy (see below) backs this up.

Wetmore Genealogy, p 508:

"Mr. [Treat] Durand was for some years High Sheriff of Schoharie county, where he now (1861) resides (Schoharie C. H. P. O.). His father, Philo M. Durand, of Oxford, New Haven co., Ct., married Harriet, dau. of William and Elizabeth (Dykeman) Livingston, of Livingston's Manor, Albany co., N.Y., b. Sept. 30, 1792 ..."

Note that this is almost verbatim what appears in Durand Family.

(cont), p 509

"...Mr. Durand's grandfather was Ebenezer Durand, who came from France in 1768, had Polly, Andrew, Philo M., Isaac Philander, David, Ebenezer, William, Samuel, Hiram."

The following attributed quotes were copied from the Web:

"Schoharie Republican, March 6, 1862

this village. Sheriff Bouck will take possession on or

Barber Schoharie Wills, Deaths, Cemeteries, etc, p 46:

"Durand, Treat d. Oct. 14, 1889, aged 76 yrs, Luth. Schoharie

Almira, his wife, d. Mar. 31, 1850, aged 39 yrs"

1855 Census Schoharie (Davenport), Town of Schoharie, District B, 136:

"45.357B DURAND Treat [age]43 [birthplace]SCHOHARIE
45.357B DURAND Polly 28 SCHOHARIE
45.357B Harvey 17 SCHOHARIE"

Note that this disagrees, for birthplace, with Durand Family. It gives
Treat b c 1812 Schoharie Co NY, Polly b c 1827 Schoharie Co NY and Harvey b c 1838 Schoharie Co NY.
Treat was born at Hartford, Hartford, Connecticut, USA, on 4 July 1813. 1855 Census b c 1812 Schoharie Co NY. An LDS marriage record has this as 20 Jul 1833, , Hartford CO, CT. 30 Jul 1833 is from Harvey Durand's applications to the Society of Colonial Wars. Wetmore has it 20 Jul 1833 and Harvey cites Wetmore so his date is probably a typo..14,15,16,13 Treat was listed as the head of a family on the in 1840 Census at Summit, Schoharie, New York, USA.17 He resided at Schoharie, New York, USA, in 1848.2 He married Polly Boughton after 1 June 1850. This is the "Mr. Harvey Durand, No. 5 W. 47th. St., New York" to whom Frederick Durand Beach, genealogists of the Durand family, sent the set of letters that my family has passed down for several generations. It was he who gave Mr Beach his list of EBENEZER's children, by his first wife who is presumably POLLY MILLS. See the letter of 23 Nov 1898: "I had not a full list of his [EBENEZER II] until I received yours."

General Register of the Society of Colonial Wars, 1899-1902, p 76:

"983 DURAND, HARVEY, New York. 2709
5th from Dr. John Durand.
8th from Hon. Richard Treat.
7th from Capt. Isaac Johnson.
7th from Alexander Bryan.
7th from Capt. Peregrine White.
6th from Capt. Johannes Dyckman.
6th from Thomas Wetmore."

The two numbers are, respectively, the NY State Society No and the General Society No.

See also Dr John Durand text for additional quote from p 622 of this same book.

See father Treat Durand for 1855 census evidence.

Wetmore, 508 (published 1861): "Is general bookkeeper in the National Bank at Albany, N. Y." This is ambiguous but appears to refer to Harvey. It can't be Almira because she was dead by 1848, or Sylvia, d. 1835. The style of the article is such that Treat's biography is treated further below and not indented. This leaves the floating sentence referring to Harvey.

The applications and affidavits to the Society for Colonial Wars contain much information. From the initial application, affidavit signed 25 Mar 1899, Harvey gives his occupation as "Member of New York Stock Exchange". Following is a substantial portion of his supplemental application, affidavit signed 18 Feb 1901:

Amanda Durand [Du362] Durand Family, p 76: "d in infancy" is an error. She married David J. Orr and had several children.

That Amanda (and ALmira her sister) did not die young is supported by the 1850 US Census for Summit, Schoharie Co, NY which shows Harriet Durand living with David and Amanda Orr and with Ephraim and Almira Young and five of their children. Amanda was born on 21 May 1819. Durand and Beach give 3 Apr 1820. Headstone implies 21 May 1819..3,4,5 She married David J Orr before June 1840.6 Amanda died on 9 February 1853 at Schoharie, New York, USA, at age 33.5 Her body was interred at Summit, Schoharie, New York, USA, at Old Summit Cemetery.5
