"Nathaniel Riggs was born 5 Aug 1798 in Newport, Campbell, KY and died 5 June 1869 in Provo, Utah, UT. He was the son of the Rev. Bethuel Riggs & Nancy Lee. Nathaniel was married first to Rachel Welding or Weldon in about 1818 in KY, they had at least 7 children that I know of. Rachel divorced Nathaniel in about 1833 in Missouri, after he joined the L.D.S. Church (Mormons). Nathaniel's father Bethuel helped her get the divorce. Bethuel Riggs was a very well known Baptist minister. Nathaniel then married to Hannah Parsons in about 1838 and they had at least one daughter that I know of. They were divorced in about 1850, in Utah. Nathaniel then married Anna Reynolds in about 1851 in Utah. They had 5 children. Lanza Riggs Genealogy says UT..^9,1,10,11 Nathaniel was divorced from Hannah Parsons at Utah, USA, circa 1850.¹ He married Anna (Annie) Reynolds at Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah, USA, on 19 January 1852. The LDS evidence says "Sld 19 Jan 1852" which means Sealed I believe..^9,1,12,5 Nathaniel died on 5 June 1869 at Provo, Utah, Utah, USA, at age 70.^2,1,5 His body was interred on 7 June 1869 at Utah, Utah, USA.⁷

I am from their son James Riggs (1774 - PA) who married Katherine Hathaway in 1796 in Kentucky. Somewhere along the way the family ended up in Kentucky.      Silas Riggs Oops. Seems to be a problem here. Different sources assign Vashti Mason to different sons of ISAAC and MARY. I'll just leave them both for now. Ugh. Silas was born at Washington, Pennsylvania, USA, on 17 August 1771. One of the references gave Washington Co, MD. Boyd Genealogy gives Washington Co, PA which is consistent with Isaac's deathplace.

Confusingly, the researchers also report that John, like his father, also married a FRANCES COLBURN, who was the daughter of Isaac Colburn and Mary Lewis and was born about 1719. Entries recently submitted to the IGI show this marriage as having taken place about 1738. However, these were submitted only as estimates, not extracted by the LDS from records, and one of the researchers [S52] states there is no proof of this marriage."

An extensive Riggs genealogy from JOHN [Ri60] on down is compiled by Ellen Sayers Lanza from near Morristown NJ. She has this to say about her proofs: "Most of what I have I got from the IGI & Mormons. Also, there is a lot of info on FTM CD's. Not saying all of it is reliable." I refer to this as the Lanza Riggs Genealogy.

The Lanza Riggs Genealogy lists only these children:

I notice that her data is often very near that of the Boyd Genealogy, so perhaps both are taking evidence from a common source.

I also note that the Boyd Genealogy refers to LDS Ancestral File #3GRF-53 and that I do too, via source John-Francis II Riggs, Family Record Sheet, downloaded from www.familysearch.org. Perhaps this is the common source.

NJ Rateables, Mendham Twp, Morris Co NJ, NJ Gen Mag 45:127:

"John Riggs 36; 2h, 6c, 2p; ex (hh, 30; 1h, 1c, 0p; L1700)"

meaning he had, in 1778, 36 acres, 2 horses, 6 cows, 2 pigs, and was exempt from service; and in 1780, he was a householder with 30 acres, 1 horse, 1 cow, no pigs, and had 1700 pounds out at interest.

Mendham Twp, Morris Co NJ Records, 87 (I:129):

"Nov. 24 1787 ...................Benjamin Leonard [Ear Marks]
N.B. This mark was formerly John Riggs Mark and since taken by William Johnston and now BENJAMIN LEONARD'S mark"

I believe this means that John Riggs, for whatever reason, no longer has cattle.      JOHN RIGGS [Ri19][Wa14] Despite what Wallace says below, there is an NYC marriage license dated 19 May 1705 on p 90 of the NY Gen & Bio Record, vol 98: 1705: "Riggs, John - Frances Colburne - 19 May L.7:267"

So although there is general agreement among the sources that JOHN married 19 May 1705, they differ in place: (1) New York City, (2) Trenton NJ, (3) Mercer Co NJ.

Wallace, p 9:

"14. John Riggs^4 (son of Edward,^3 Edward, ^2, Edward^1) was born at Newark, N. J., about 1679. A license at Trenton shows that he married Frances Colburn May 19, 1705, and tradition gives the following four sons.

Edward, b. about 1713.
Christopher, b. about 1715.
John, b. about 1717.
Jedediah, b. about 1720."

RIGGS Surname Study:

"9. JOHN RIGGS (EDWARD, EDWARD, EDWARD)

Wallace states that John was born "about 1679". However, Wallace always lists children in the order in which they were born and Edward and Joseph, listed either side, are shown as being born about 1668 and about 1675. So it is possible that there was a printer's error in Wallace's book and John was born in 1669 or 1670.

Wallace states that John married FRANCES COLBURN by licence at Trenton, Mercer Co. NJ on 19MAY1705, and that tradition gives 4 sons who Wallace names with approximate years of birth. Recent researchers [S33][S52] add that Frances was born in 1688 at Trenton, Mercer Co. NJ, and quote specific dates for the births of their 4 sons at Trenton, which Wallace was unaware of:

     He married an unknown person .^3,6 EDWARD RIGGS [Ri7][Wa3] RIGGS Surname Study, by Geoff Riggs (the 2 Jan 2002 version):

"7. Edward Riggs was alledgedly born in Roxbury MA about 1636.

Neither Wallace nor Abbott [S48] found any record of a marriage, but both reported that Edward's wife's name was MARY. Torrey [S45] reported her as "MARY [MUNN]?" This is probably based on the fact that a 'Daniell Munne' of Milford made an oral will prior to 13JNE1666 leaving his estate to Mary 'Rigs' [S72] which, if one makes the reasonable assumption that Mary was Daniel's married daughter, implies that Edward married MARY MUNN(E) prior to 13JNE1666.

This casts doubt on a statement made by a recent researcher [S33] that Edward married twice: that a MARY BROWN, born in 1639 at RRRoxbury, was the mother of his ten children and that MARY MUNN his second wife, also born in 1639, died in 1689. The first child was born about 1662 and the last about 1685 (see below), so if MARY MUNN married Edward prior to 13JNE1666 and did not die until 1689 as the reseracher states, she would have been the mother of at least 7 of these children. The statement may have been an attempt to reconcile the probability that Edward married MARY MUNN with a possible reference elsewhere to him marrying a Brown (if, he could have been confused with his brother Joseph who married Hanna Brown).

In 1667, Edward and his family followed his father Edward's family from Derby CT to Newark NJ, where they were amongst the original settlers - he and his brother Joseph were the first to obtain grants of outside lands from the town authorities. He was assigned a home lot in Newark and, though he was not as educated as his two younger brothers, he succeeded in accumulating other landed property there, which he wubsequently distributed among his children. In his land conveyances, he was often designated as a "planter"

No record has been found of his death, but he was still alive in 1700 when he was part to a deed.

Wallace states that "In Mr Conger's collections he gives the following children from tradition, but their order and approximate dates are arranged here as circumstances and a few known facts seem to direct."
