"Horace Bradford B/11-12-1852 in Cass Co. In
MR/Sarah Erickson 01-01-1873 by Rev. Sylvester
Durand, He D/06-1932 at Waterville Mn."

It is not clear from this where the marriage was performed. Many of the people in the Oblinger Index are from Peru, IN. N.B. Note that Cass Co is right next to Peru, Miami Co, IN. It is also not clear that this is our Sylvester Durand, but the timing and location are right. Note that the death refers to Horace Bradford [Oblinger], not Sylvester.

Here's another Oblinger reference, a letter from Uriah Wesley Oblinger to Thomas Family, 11 Jul 1881, from the Nebraska State Historical Society, Lincoln NE:

"Sibley Co Minn
July 11^th 1881
...
Sabra is at Sylvester Durands at present having her eye doctored at present ... but I had to take her out of school and have her eye treated.

It is the duct that leads the excess of tears through the nostril that is stopped up & has caused a tumor under the inner corner of the right eye ... When the Doctor first examined he thought the duct permanently closed ... & he had taken her to another occulist & held council & they had decided they could dilate the duct & make a natural eye out of it. they had set last tuesday or wednesday to perform the operation, but I have not heard how they succeeded. I left some some [sic] postal card with the Doc' with my address so he would keep me advised of her condition her health ... I went to Waterville & got Sabra ... the reason I left Sabra n Waterville was to have her near the Doctor. She goes to see the doctor by herself every day. Horace's Wife & Mrs Durand will have to draw cuts to see who will keep her when her eye gets well.

[envelope: Mrs Maggie Thomas, Onward Cass County, Indiana]"

There is reference to a Sylvester Durand in the "Early History of the Disciples" by A S Hayden, but the dates don't seem right. This is a history of a religious movement in the Western Reserve of OH in the "second quarter of the nineteenth century", apparently a reaction to Mormonism in part. Most of the dates in the book seem to hover around the 1830s. Our Sylvester was b NY ca 1832.

MN Burials:

"Durand, Sylvester, section:235, death date: 14/DEC/1919, cemetery: Sakatah, township: Waterville, county: Le Sueur, notes: age 94 yrs. 6 mos. 1 day. Sister - Mrs Samuel Reynolds"

This creates a problem, implying a birthdate of 13 Jun 1825, BEFORE the birthdate 20 Feb 1827 of the last known child of first wife of his father. Census evidence says he is born 1828-1832, so something is wrong. A death age of 84 rather than 94 would work just fine.

Mrs Samuel Reynolds is his sister Harriet Ann Durand (born of the second marriage, as is, presumably, Sylvester). Sylvester was born at New York, USA, circa 1830. 1850 census gives age 18, implies c 1832; 1870 census gives age 42 implies 1828; 1875 census gives age 46, implies c 1829. But the cemetery evidence gives exactly 13 Jun 1825! Only the cemetery date does not fit, oddly enough, with Samuel's second marriage. 20 Feb 1827 is the last known birthdate for child of first wife.

Now if he were 84 rather than 94, this would all make sense..8,2,1 He married Mariah (Maria, Moria, Mearia) Long at Miami, Indiana, USA, on 11 July 1852.1,9 He resided at ?Cass Co, IN, on 1 January 1873.4 He resided at Waterville, Le Sueur, Minnesota, USA, on 11 July 1881.6 Sylvester died on 14 December 1919 at Waterville, Le Sueur, Minnesota, USA.8,10 His body was interred on 15 December 1919 at Waterville Twp, MN, at Sakatah.10
