"A PIECE OF SAVAGE BARBARISM
Editor Gazette: - Permit me through the columns of your weekly paper, to make known to the civilized world and to Texian soldiers in particular, the death of my unfortunate son, Frank Shaw, a native Texian, who was brutally murdered by Federal troops in Louisiana, on the 3d day of November last. The circumstances are substantially as follows: My son was Orderly Sergeant in Captain Waterhouse's Company, Lane's Regiment, Majors' Brigade of Cavalry. In the morning of the Borbeaux battle, his (Waterhouse's) and Johnston's companies, who had been on picket, a mile from the Federals encampment, marched up to a bridge on Bayou Borbeaux fronting the Federals, and were ordered to dismount and take trees. My son with two or three others, seeing a good position across the bayou, some eight or ten steps in advance of our line, ran to it, and after having fired three or four rounds each, the order was given to fall back to their horses, who having further to run by being in advance, they were captured before they got back.
At this critical moment Gen. Green and Majors came dashing up at the head of their victorious columns from the right, and repulsed the enemy, who after having taken my son some four hundred yards, fearing his recapture, brutally and inhumanly murdered him by shooting him in the head with a pistol!
I have not written this account hastily and from the impulse of the moment; but have waited patiently for the last four or five weeks hoping the first account of this sad affair which I received from my nephew, A. P. Perkins, might possibly prove incorrect as I could not believe, that there was a nation on the face of God's habitable Globe, especially one professing to be foremost in civilization and Christianity, that would have acted so barbarously: notwithstanding the poet has long since said:
"But look for ruin when a coward wins, For fear and cruelty were ever twins."
My son had met them honorably previously on many battle fields. Mr. James Holland, a member of the same company, has lately arrived at my house, with his horse and baggage. He was taken prisoner a short time previous to my son; but he saw while in New Orleans, before his escape, the prisoners who were captured with him, with whom he was well acquainted, and they informed him that they saw Frank shot in the cowardly manner described above, and for the only reason, that his feeble health would not permit him to keep up afoot, with their retreating cavalry.
I have been thus particular in detailing facts for this purpose of making it publicly khown to our brave Texian troops in the field, that these same thieves and murderers under Gen. Banks, are now polluting our Southern borders with their unwelcome presence, and I now leave it with them to decide whether or not, so cowardly and dastardly an enemy deserved the treatment of a brave and magnanimous foe?

James Shaw Jr Here is evidence for this James Shaw Jr ("the other"), from the 1850 Lincoln Co MO Census:
"571 571 James Shaw Jr 34[9?] M Farmer 1600 Missouri
Julia A "27 F Kentucky
Bethuel 5 M Missouri
William T " 4 M "
Margaret E. " 2 F "

The 1840 Lincoln Co MO census has this:
"I. James Shaw _ _ _ _ 1 _ _ _ _ _ 1 _ _ _ _ _ _" [the I. (could be J.) is the letter uppercase I]. This means 1M 20-30, 1F 5-10: a 20+ yr old man and a little girl, no wife. The little girl is a puzzle. Note, however, that if Sarah were 17 in 1850, then she would be 7 in 1840, so this fits the little sister (or other relative) hypothesis above.
He is listed 3 lines above James Shaw Sr. and 4 lines above Bethuel Shaw.
A middle name Joseph comes from the Boyd Genealogy. I have not seen it elsewhere. I have seen it attributed to his father too, however.
Nielson: c 1811, KY
Donna Syrett's webpages has his name James Joseph Shaw Jr, b. 1 May 1811 in (probably), St. Charles County, Missouri, d 1868 in Waco, McLennan, Texas.
It appears to me that Sarah J was the Bethuel Shaw's daughter and that she was claimed on the 1850 census by two different surviving brothers: James Shaw Jr and Napoleon B Shaw.
James was born at Missouri, USA, on 1 May 1811. Census looks like 34 or 39 implies 1816 or 1811 Missouri
Alma Marie Palmer says 1 May 1811 KY
Boyd Genealogy says 1 May 1811 "in (probably), St. Charles County, Missouri".1,2 James was listed as the head of a family on the in 1840 Census at Lincoln, Missouri, USA.4 He married Julia Ann Reeds at Lincoln, Missouri, USA, on 3 August 1841.5,6

Hon, Capt John Shaw History of Clermont Co OH, p 400:
"In this neighborhood also settled about the same time John Shaw, who was born in York Co., Pa., July 15, 1779. His father was James Shaw, who did valiant service in the Revolution, serving under Gen. Neville, and was at Trenton, Germantown, and Brandywine. In 1790 he moved with his family to Maysville, Ky., and five years later to Campbell County, of the same State, about three miles west of New Richmond, where he opened a large farm and lived until his death. Of his six sons, John, the eldest, purchased a tract of land in Ohio about 1800, having been led to see its beauty and fertility before the country was settled, while hunting on this side of the river. In 1804 he married Nancy Morin, a daughter of Edward Morin, and having improved his land somewhat came to live in the spring of 1808, occupying the present Ira Ferguson's place. He served a short time in the war of 1812, and rendered prominent service as a public man. He died in July, 1847, and his wife twenty years later, having reared a family of ten children. Of these James, the eldest, became a member of Gen. Austin's Texas colony, where he followed his avocation as a surveryor while that State was yet a Territory, and helped achieve its independence by fighting in her army and serving in her Congress, distinguishing himself as a military man and as a legislator. John, the second son, yet resides near New Richmond. He married a daughter of Gen. Clayton Webb, of Hamilton County, who settled there in 1789. He was a member of the last Constitutional Convention, and served in the Legislature. William, the third son, married a duaghter of William Nichols, and was also a legislator. He yet resides in Ohio. The next two sons, Robert and Joseph, removed to Missouri, where the latter was for many years the principal of the Lexington schools. The former was killed by bushwhackers in 1862. Jonathan R., the youngest son, married a daughter of Johnson Wyatt, and yet lives on part of the old Shaw farm. Of the daughters of John Shaw, Sr., one had Nathan Nichols for her first husband, and for her second Elijah Penn; others married John Nichols, Ira Ferguson, and Robert Davis, - the latter of Indiana."
So the Rev War Abstracts correctly state that JAMES SHAW's eldest son represented Clermont Co OH.
History of Clermont Co OH, p 72:
John is appointed or elected county Commissioner (one of three):
"1815. - John Shaw, Ohio township, three years"
p 83: "November term, 1815, John Shaw appeared as the commissioner elected in place of Amos Ellis, whose term had expired."
p 88: A James B Shaw is mentioned (with a portrait near the back of the book), but I don't think this is the same James Shaw. There is also a picture (engraving) of the "J. W. Shaw" place. I'm not sure who this is either.
p 127: "The years 1828 and 1836 having been omitted [from a previous table] in their order, and being Presidential years, when political excitement ran high, we give a brief summary of the results of their October votes: In 1828, for Congress, James Findlay, 1617; David K. Este, 818; for two representatives, John Shaw, 1681; John Emery, 1554; Thomas Gatch, 874; Orho Pearre, 674..."
p 129: "REPRESENTATIVES. The following are the representatives in the Legislature from Clermont County, with years of election. From 1851 the term was two years, instead of one.
...
1828. - John Shaw, Ohio township; John Emery, Miami township."
p 132: "In addition to the foregoing many former citizens of Clermont achieved distinction in other States. ... Hon. James Shaw was a hero in the struggle for Texan independence, and a Congressman of that republic ..."
p 164: "In her legislative history Ohio has ever been distinguished for her zeal and success in the cause of popular education ... its senator, Thomas Morris, and representatives, John Shaw and John Emery, who labored with their votes and voices for the still better laws of later days, which laid broad in the State the foundations of that magnificent system of common schools we enjoy, unequaled in perfect strength and solidity by that of any State in our Union."
p 198: "In the struggle for the perpetuation of the rights wrested from Great Britain, or in the war of 1812-15, the county contributed liberally of the best element of its population to the number of several hundred men. These constituted companies commanded by ... and John Shaw, of New Richmond. ... Of Capt. John Shaw's company Elijah Nichols was first lieutenant, Hugh Ferguson ensign..."
