PETER MILLS [Mi1]1

FatherSir PETER WOUTERS VAN DER MEULEN
PETER MILLS [Mi1] The Peter Mills family has been documented very carefully, since I entered the Mills data here, by Helen Schatvet Ullmann, CG, FASG, in her "Descendants of Peter Mills of Windsor, Connecticut." It should be consulted for the most accurate details.

Stiles (Windsor), 494:

"The progenitor of the Dutch family of Mills in America was Sir PETER WOUTERS VAN DER MEULEN of Amsterdam, Holland. His knighthood was conferred upon him for distinguished services to the public in the improvement of dykes and canals. His eldest son, PETER VAN MEULEN, b. in Holland, 1622, emig. to America from Leyden, where he was studying for the ministry in that University. About 1650 he there joined the refugees who had come thither for conscience's sake, from Eng., and thus aroused the displeasure of his father, who disinherited him. In Col. Rec., Vol. I (office of Sec'y of State, Hartford, Conn.), it is stated that, by his own requenst, his name was changed to Peter Mills, Van der Meulen, being in Dutch "the man of the Mill." He m. (1) Dorkas Messinger of W., who was b. 23 Sept., 1650, and d. 18 May, 1688; (2) Jane Warren of Hartford, 10 Dec., 1691; he d. 17 Apl., 1710 (one account says 12 Apl.), 1702. He had a lot in Haddam, Conn., before 30 Nov., 1669. It is not known that he ever lived in H., but 13 Mch., 1670, the town of H. voted to Thomas Shailler "the lote that was Peter Milese's the douchemanes." (Had. Rec., 1st Bk.) - D.W.P. As a tailor, he is frequently mentioned in MS. of Rev. Timothy Edwards of (East) Windsor. He sett. in W. nr. the present east part of Bloomfield, eastward of the res. of the late Samuel J. Mills, and near the confines of Windsor Plains."2 He married Dorkas Messinger.1 PETER was born at The Netherlands (Holland) in 1622.1 He married Jane Warren on 10 December 1691.1 PETER died on 17 April 1710.1
