Dr William Frederick Durand [Du625] The Durand Family:
"Dr. William Frederick Durand was the most distinguished descendant of Dr. John Durand bearing the surname Durand. ... His life was rich in important contributions to mankind made over many years.
"Dr. Durand grew up on his father's and grandfather's farm near Derby, Connecticut. At 17, in 1876, he placed tenth in a group of eighty boys taking competitive entrance examinations for admission to the U. S. Naval Academy at Annapolis. He graduated second in his class ... He received a Ph.D. degree from Lafayette College for studies there, in 1883 to 1885.
"In 1891, Dr. Durand was offered the position of director of the post-graduate school of the college in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering being organized at Cornell University. ... During thirteen years at Cornell, he invented logarithmic cross-section paper, the radial planimeter, and made great advances in the study of the marine screw propeller by extensive model tests in the hydraulic laboratory under a Carnegie Foundation grant.
"In 1904 Dr. Durand was induced by Dr. David Starr Jordan to go to Stanford University, where he taught until becoming an Emeritus Professor in 1924. Here he established an aeronautical laboratory and was appointed to the Advisory Committee for Aeronautics of the U. S. Government in 1914, later known as the NACA [and still later as NASA]. He proposed and directed the research work instigated on the air propeller. In 1916, he was made chairman of the NACA and directed the development of the Liberty engine. He served on the NACA until 1933 and again in 1941-45 when he directed development of the jet engine.
"...He returned to Stanford University in February 1919, after the end of the first World War. There, he resumed research work in aeronautics and acted as consultant on the building of many dams with generation of electricity by hydraulic power.
"After retiring from Stanford, he spent most of his time in organizing and editing the monumental 6-volume encyclopedic work entitled 'Aerodynamic Theory,' which he had conceived and to which twenty-five authors contributed. ...
"In 1917 he was elected to the National Academy of Sciences. The next year he was elected to membership in the American Philosophical Society. In 1936 he was awarded the Guggenheim Medal for research in aerodynamic theory, and the John Fritz medal for achievement in aviation. In 1938 he received the Franklin Institute Medal; in 1944, the J. J. Carty Medal; and in 1946, the Presidential Medal for Merit. In 1948 he received the Wright Memorial Trophy. In 1951 he presented to the National Air Museum of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.D., the first variable pitch propeller which he had invented and which was used on all but jet aircraft, after his invention in 1918. ...
"In 1924-1925, he was president of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and this organization induced him to write his autobiogrraphy in 1953. It was published by McGraw Hill Book Company and is entitled 'Adventures in the Navy, in Education, Science, Engineering, and in War -- A Life Story by W. F. Durand"

The W F Durand autobiography:
"I was born March 5, 1859, in Beacon Falls, Connecticut.* A year later my parents moved from Beacon Falls to Derby, Connecticut, at the junction of the Naugatuck and Housatonic Rivers, Beacon Falls being situated on the former, about eight miles above Derby.
*At the time of my birth, the village now known as Beacon Falls, was, to the best of my knowledge, not set off separately as a town under this name, but was a part of the township of Bethany. For this reason, I have sometimes given my birthplace as Beacon Falls and sometimes as Bethany."
Also:
"My early life and environment thus became that typical of New england farm and small town life in the years immediately following the Civil War .
...
In those days my own memory and conscious experience knew of no condition other than that of war and one of my keenest memories is that of being puzzled to understand what was meant when people said the war was over. ... Memories of Lincoln's assassination and of my brother home on leave for recovery from a wound in the leg stand out clearly." William was born at Beacon Falls, New Haven, Connecticut, USA, on 5 March 1859.3,4 He married Charlotte Kneen on 23 October 1883.5,6 William died on 9 August 1958 at Brooklyn, Kings, New York, USA, at age 99.7
