William (2) Twining William Twining is mentioned on p 271 and p 278 of Stratton's "Plymouth Colony: Its History & People 1620-1691", and Willm Twyneing on p 445 is probably the same person (but it might be his father).

p 271: "William Twining had married his [Josiah Cooke's] stepdaughter Elizabeth Deane."

p 278: "The children of Stephen and Elizabeth (Ring) Deane were Elizabeth (married William Twining and had children), Miriam (married John Wing as second wife but no issue), and Susanna (married first Joseph Rogers and second Stephen Snow, and had children by the second husband)."

Dawes-Gates, pp 306-307:

"Daniel [Doane, father] was a Deacon of the First Church of Eastham for many years, probably succeeding his father. During his incumbency and before 1695, disaffection arose in the minds of some of the church members, and, undoubtedly, sadness in his home, because of the conversion of a number of people, including his son, Daniel, to the Friends' faith. Because of this, the latter man removed, before 1700, to Newtown, Pennsylvania, thus creating the first break in the family circle, as well as being the first to forsake the church of his fathers. It is stated that William Twining [son of William] of that town, who was a Deacon, and whose daughter Daniel Doane appears to have married, was excommunicated from the church for this cause and also emigrated to Pennsylvania." William was born at Gloucester, Gloucestershire, England, on 25 October 1619.1 He married Elizabeth Deane at Eastham, Barnstable, Massachusetts, USA, on 25 October 1703.1,3 William died on 4 November 1703 at Newtown, Bucks, Pennsylvania, USA, at age 84. Burial is given as "11 Jan 1703 Place: , Newtown, Bucks, Pennsylvania" but this is before the death date. Date might be 11 Jan 1704 but that seems to be quite a long time after the 4 Nov death..1

In January or February 1632/33 the court gave him permission to build a grist mill with monopoly rights if he could handle all the colony's needs, but on condition that he charge no more than one pottle out of every bushel of ground grain ...      His body was interred at Leiden, Zuid-Holland, Netherlands.2 William Ring Stratton p 344:

"RING, MARY - The William Ring who turned back to England in 1620 on the Speedwell [because of a leak, see below] with Robert Cushman ... probably died later in Leiden. It was most likely his wife, Mary Ring, who witnessed the betrothal of Samuel Terry in Leiden in 1614 ..., and she is probably the Mary Ring who arrived at Plymouth ca. 1629 with children Elizabeth, Susanna, and Andrew ... a tentative pedigree [shows] that William Ring quite likely was the man of that name of Pettistree, County Suffolk, who married at Ufford, County Suffolk, 21 May 1601 Mary Durrant of Ufford; a daughter Elizabeth was baptized at Ufford 23 February 1602/03. Mary Ring died at Plymouth 15 or 19 July 1631, and in her will she named her daughters Elizabeth Deane and Susan Clark, her son-in-law Stephen Deane, a child of Stephen and Elizabeth Deane, and her son Andrew Ring, who was a minor. She named her friends Samuel Fuller and Thomas Blossom as overseers of the will ..; both Fuller and Blossom had been members of the Leiden congregation. Son Andrew married (1) Deborah Hopkins daughter of Mayflower passenger Stephen Hopkins and (2) Lettice (_____) Morton, widow of John Morton. ..."

Stratton p 20:

"Though the settlers continued from England in two ships, the Speedwell had to return to England due to dangerous leaking, and the Mayflower continued alone. According to Capt. John Smith, writing in 1622, 'They left the coast of England the 23 of August, with about 120 persons, but the next day the lesser ship sprung a leake, that forced their return to Plimoth, where discharging her and 20 passengers, with the great ship and a hundred persons besides sailers, they set saile againe the Sixt of September.' Among the twenty who stayed behind were Robert Cushman, one of the Separatist leaders, and William Ring, of the Leiden congregation. Cushman wrote of the short but frightful voyage aboard the Speedwell, 'Poore William Ring and my selfe doe strive who shall be meate first for the fishes.'" William was born at Houghton, Lancaster, England, in 1565.2 He married Mary Durrant at Ufford, Suffolk, England, on 21 May 1601.3,2 William died in 1621 at Leiden, Zuid-Holland, Netherlands.2

John Doane1,2

M, b. circa 1590, d. 21 February 1686
Father?John Doane
Mother?Lydia (?)
John Doane Stratton pp 282-3 [much of this is derived in turn from Dawes-Gates pp 299-301]:

"John Doane was born ca. 1590 (he called himself aged about eighty-eight in his will, dated 16 May 1678, given below). He arrived at Plymouth probably between 1628 and 1632. There is no record of him being at Leiden, but he served as a deacon in the Plymouth Church. He was an Assistant in 1632/33, but he was 'freed from the office' on 2 January 1633/34 so that he could devote his full time to his church functions. He still served on various government committees, including the one that revised the laws in 1636, and he later became a deputy for Plymouth. ... He was one of the men appointed to buy land at Nauset from the Indians, and he became one of the first settlers there. ...

" His earliest known wife was called Ann in a 1648 deed, but in a later deed (of 1659) his wife was Lydia ... His inventory in 1686 was sworn to by an Abigail Doane, whom some have taken as a third wife, though Dawes-Gates 2:305 has good arguments to show that Abigail was more likely his daughter. Torrey suggests that wife Ann might have been a Perkins. In his will dated 18 May 1678, inventory taken 21 May 1686 and sworn to by Abigail Doane 29 May 1686, he named his 'loving wife', daughter Abigail, sons John, Daniel, and Ephraim, and granddaughter Margaret Hicks, and he left the remainder of his estate to 'all his sons and daughters' .... He described himself in the will as 'aged eighty and eight or there about,' and in the inventory he was said to have died 21 February 1685/86, 'aged about a hundred years' - thus in eight years he had aged twelve years, which is a typical overstatement of age which occurred in these times as someone began approaching the century mark. His daughter Lydia married Samuel Hicks; Abigail married Samuel Lothrop (in 1690 - she was unmarried in 1686 when Doane's will was sworn to); son John married (1) Hannah Bangs and (2) Rebecca Pettee; Daniel married (1) unknown and (2) Hepsibah (Cole) Crispe; and Ephraim married (1) Mercy Knowles and (2) Mary (Smalley) Snow .... Dawes-Gates 2:302 gives good reason for believing that John Doane's ward, Joseph Harding, was his nephew, and Joseph's mother, the widow Martha Harding, was Doane's sister. ..." John was born at Manchester, England, circa 1590.3,4 John immigrated, circa 1630. Destination: (an unknown value).5 He married Ann ?Perkins before 1648.6 He married Lydia (?) before 1659.6 He made a will at Massachusetts, USA, on 16 May 1678.7 John died on 21 February 1686 at Eastham, Barnstable, Massachusetts, USA. Place is given in LDS evidence only..6,3

Martha Doane1,2

F, d. 1633
Father?John Doane
Mother?Lydia (?)
Martha was born. She Dawes-Gates, II:302:

"The other child to receive shelter in his [John Doane's] home in 1633 was probably his own nephew. That year John was made the administrator for and presented an inventory of the estate left by the widow Martha Harding, who is believed to have been his sister, and who left to his care, her son Joseph even though she had adult harding relatives living in the community. This fact, with the added ones that John had advanced over 9 pounds to her before her death and that this Joseph Harding was complained of in 1652 for 'carrying an Indians gun Vnto the smith to bee mended in his vnkels name,' justifies a belief in their close relationship."

Plymouth Colony, 297:

"HARDING, MARTHA - Widow Harding was on the 25 March 1633 tax list for the minimum amount, nine shillings. Martha harding died before 28 October 1633 and John doane presented her inventory and was administrator on behalf of her son .... Her inventory was valued at a little over 20 pounds, and among her debts were 20 bpounds to three of her husband's brothers in England. It was noted that she died without a will, leaving one son to the custody of Mr. John Doane ..., and Dawes-Gates 2:302 [see above] gives good reason to think that she may have been Doane's sister. Her son, Joseph harding, later married Bethiah Cooke ..., daughter of Josiah Cooke..." She married (?) Harding.3 Martha died in 1633 at Plymouth, Plymouth, Massachusetts, USA.4
