"My Clearwater family comes possibly from Theunis Jacobsen KLAARWATER, but for sure from Jacob, born abt.1750, probably in Guilford Co. NC. He served in Rev. War from Guilford Co. NC., and married Elizabeth ARMSTRONG there in 1776. They both died in Clinton Co OH.

Their children, some proven, some are not: James, Rachel, Ann, Polly, David, Jacob, Reuben, Dorcas, Elizabeth, Cassandra and my own ancestor, Ruth."

Gawthorp correction, posted 6 Dec 1999:

"Jacob Clearwater born abt. 1750, possibly in NY. He served in the NC Militia in 1780, unknown from which county.

It is unknown where Jacob and Elizabeth wrer married in 1776, but possibly it was Randolph Co. NC. As per Tax List, Jacob was in Randolph Co. NC in 1779.

Elizabeth died in Greene Co. TN abt. 1795-1799. Jacob died in Clinton Co. OH in abt. 1825-1828."

"James CLEARWATER (Nancy STAFFORD) is issue of Jacob/Hannah, not Jacob/Elizabeth"

[I believe the following family is not our CLEARWATERs, but include it since so many people connect the two families.]

www.mindspring.com/~conklin/family/klaar2.htm:

"Abraham Klaarwater was one of the founders of the Church of Marbletown ...

Abraham and Elizabeth's children are as follows:

If this is our JACOB, then this last reference gives his ancestors in some detail:

"As we continue with the Claarwater, Clearwater families, we will take up the subject of Abraham Klaarwater - who was the first son of Jacobus Klaarwater and Mary Deyo (daughter of Pierre Deyo and Agatha Nicoll).

Abraham, who was born in New Paltz on the 2nd of July 1699, married on 20th of October 1738 at Kingston R.D.C. to Elizabeth Schoonmaker, born in the Town of Rochester, and baptised in Inkgstonat the Reformed Dutch Church on the 8th of November 1719. She was the daughter of Frederick Schoonmaker and his 2nd wife, Eva Swartwout. Abrahma Klaarwater and his wife are buried in the Coxen Cemetery on the Bruceville ROad, Town of Rosendale, Ulster Co. [There is lots more in this reference.]

The following from LDS Pedigree Resource File CD #28:

"The following narrative was written by Wanda Hunter Peavey in her book, "The History and Genealogy of: Clearwaters = Clearwater Family in America - 1755-1983."
"Jacob 'must have growed like Topsy', for his parentage is still a mystery. However, he has left a living memorial in almost every state of the Union through his seventeen known children and their descendents.
While efforts are being made to link our ancestry with the New York Dutch Clearwater's, it is my belief at the present time, that if there is a tie, it is far back in time. Records are being searched in Holland for this connection.
William J. Clearwaters, a descendent of Jacob's son David, states that three brothers came to America in the 1600's and one brother became angry over an unpaid debt and left for parts unknown. (We question if Jacob's ancestor could have been this brother.) An excerpt from correspondence written by John F. Clearwaters, a descendent of Reuben, son of Jacob, states that four brothers of Welsh and Scotch ancestry, born in Wales, came to America about 1696. One went to New York, one to Philadelphia and two to North Carolina.
Jacob, our ancestor, was born about 1750 and according to census records of his children, he was born in North Carolina.
Information taken from Rev. John F. Clearwaters' SAR (Sons of the American Revolution) as told by Rev. James A. Clearwaters: His father, as he remembers his grandfather Rev. Reuben Clearwaters telling him: "My grandfather told me that during the War of the Revolution, the Quakers in the settlement where he was born in Guilford County, North Carolina did not enlist in the army of the patriots because they did not believe in war, even though their sympathies were with the revolution. Their families had come from Wales so as to be free to worship as Friends, and Jacob Clearwaters, his father, was a Friend preacher. (Last statement is questionable).
Jacob I had been married during the War. When Gates, Green and Morgan were having their campaign with Cornwallis, the struggle was brought into the neighborhood where these people lived, so my great grandfather, Jacob, with others of his fellow Quakers joined the American Army and fought for several months. He was a private in Captain John Johnston's Company in Colonel John Collier's regiment of North Carolina Militia commanded by John Butler, Brigadier General. His name appears on a company payroll dated December 22, 1780, which shows that he was paid from September 8th to December 22nd, 106 days - total $176. His service may have been of a non-combatant nature.
The next we find Jacob I is on the 1779 tax list of Randolph County, North Carolina in John Hinds District. He was on the 1790 Census of Guilford County, Salisbury District with one male over age 16 and 3 males under age 16 plus 6 females.
Jacob was one of the founders of New Hope Monthly Meeting (Quaker) of Greene County, Tennessee. He previously had been a member of the Center Monthly Meeting in North Carolina as we find a certificate was produced for him dated 19th of December 1795.
His daughter, Ann and Jesse Wright appeared on February 27, 1796 and declared "their intentions of marriage with each other they having consent of parents".
On December 27th, 1800, he was complained by Friends for accomplishing his marriage contrary to discipline and for frolicking and dancing. In 1802 he was complained for 'drinking to excess and fighting his fellow creatures'. "At a meeting held the 24th of May, 1806, Jacob Clearwaters had a right of membership amongst Friends but hath given away to a libertine spirit. So far as to remove out of verge of any Monthly Meeting, for which misconduct this Meeting disowns him for being any longer a member of our Society until he condemns the same to the satisfaction of Friends".
On the third day of the fifth month 1797, Ann Clearwaters and Jesse Wright were married. The above material was mimeographed by Keith Clearwaters, son of Ivan Clearwaters, from books in original handwriting of minutes of the Monthly Meeting of New Hope in Greene County, Tennessee and was found at Guilford College in North Carolina It is also printed in the Hinshaw Quaker Records.
On October 22, 1805, Jacob Clearwaters sold land in Greene County, Tennessee to Alexander Armstrong.
Jacob's first wife was Elizabeth and she died between 1796 and 1800. He married Hannah Fisher Foster on January 28, 1800, in Greene County, Tennessee. Hannah was the daughter of James and Jane Atkinson Fisher.
Marriage records of Greene County,Tennessee show son Reuben married Jane Miller January 19, 1802; daughter Dorcas married John Moore January 18, 1800; daughter Elizabeth married William Miller April 20, 1803.
A petition for a house of entertainment for Madison Township, Highland County, Ohio was received on August 8, 1815 on behalf of Jacob Clearwaters Sr. and Jacob Clearwaters Jr. It was also signed by Cephas Clearwaters and James Fisher.
Hinshaw's Quaker records of New Hope Monthly Meeting, Greene County Tennessee show Hannah Clearwaters was granted a certificate to the Fairfield Monthly Meeting Ohio December 22, 1810 and that she was received in the Fairfield Monthly Meeting, Clinton Co., Ohio August 21, 1811.
Jacob I appeared on the 1820 Green Township, Clinton County, Ohio census with one male under age 10, one male age 10 to 16, one male age 16 to 18 and one male age 18 to 28. Also there was one male age 45 plus, 3 females under age 10, one female age 10 to 16, one female age 16 to 26 and one female age 45 plus. This is the last record we have of Jacob I. Hannah appears as head of household in 1830. In the Census of Green Township, Clinton County, Ohio, there was one male age 15 to 20, one male age 20 to 30, one female age 10 to 15, one female 15 to 20 and one female 50 to 60.
Jacob must have died between 1820 and 1830. We find Hannah granted certificate to Dover Monthly Meeting, Ohio in 1825 and to Cherry Grove Monthly Meeting in Indiana in 1827. She was endorsed to Lee's Creek Monthly Meeting in 1821. Hannah Fisher Clearwaters was born January 12, 1776 and died June 27, 1845 in Westfield, Hamilton county, Indiana. She is buried in the Westfield Monthly Meeting Cemetery.
My father, Charles O. Clearwaters always stated that his father Charles W. had told him Jacob I was married twice and had 22 children. We have been able to identify 17 of those children. We have gathered much data on these children and their descendents and hope to publish a Clearwaters Family book in the near future.
We believe there is a family connection to Silvester Clearwaters born 1712, and wife Lettes born 1714, who appeared on the Sugarland Hundred, Frederick County, Maryland tax list and 1782 tax list of Loudon County, Virginia. They also listed a daughter Elizabeth born 1751.
We also have record of Benjamin Clearwaters born 1749, enlisted in Army of the Revolution in Virginia in 1776, serving for 3 years under George Washington. He married Elender Robins in 1788 in Randolph County, North Carolina. David Cottern, J.P. performed the ceremony. In 1790 he was living in Grenville County, South Carolina, one male over age 16, one under age 16 and 3 females. He died in Dickson County, Tennessee after 1848. The three known daughters were Deborah Clearwaters Raper born 1790, Rachell Clearwaters Nicholson, born 1792, and Olive Clearwaters (Thomas) Sterhens born 1794.
Note: Anyone interested or desiring more information of other descendents or can add to or correct same is urged to contact any of the following researchers: (Narrative written in 1975).

The following should put an end to the NY Clearwaters being the ancestors of JACOB CLEARWATER:

http://www.mindspring.com/~conklin/family/clowater.htm:

"1. Frederick1 Clearwater was a son, and probably the first or second child, of Abraham Klaarwater and Elizabeth Schoonmaker, which would mean that he was born in either 1739 or 1741 at Marbletown, NY. Elizabeth's parents were Frederick and Eva Schoonmaker. On July 7, 1765, a Frederick Clearwater "young man" was the sponsor of Wenyntie, a daughter of Abraham Clearwater and Elizabeth Schoonmaker. A Frederick is listed as a son in Abraham’s will of 1776. As there was no other Frederick living in the area, this Frederick is identified here as the brother of Wenyntie.

On January 30, 1776, Frederick Clearwater, along with Jacob, Joseph, Thomas, Isaac, and Daniel (all Clearwaters), and others signed a petition in connection with the election of a Captain at Marbletown. These Clearwaters were likely all brothers, and the children of Abraham and Elizabeth.

On the Muster Roll of the King's American Regiment (Loyalist force from NY) between 1777 and 1783, there are four Clearwaters listed: Daniel, Frederick, Isaac, and Jacob. The following detail is available: August, 1777, Capt. Fuge's Company - Frederick Clearwater in General Hospital, Jacob Clearwater dead July 15, 1777; August, 1777, Capt. DePeyster's Company - Isaac Clearwater dead July 26, 1777. Frederick Clearwater and Daniel Clearwater appear together in Capt. Gray's Company at Lloyd's Neck, Long Island, NY in November of 1779, at Georgetown in March of 1781, at Savannah in May of 1782, and at Flushing Fly in 1783. Are these the same Frederick, Jacob, Isaac and Daniel Clearwaters who signed the 1776 Marbletown petition? Loyalists Abraham, Daniel, Frederick, Isaac, and Jacob Clearwater all had their New York estates confiscated."

From the above it appears that the NY Jacob is definitely NOT the NC JACOB CLEARWATER, for the very simple reason that Jacob was a Loyalist and JACOB a Patriot. Furthermore, this Jacob Clearwater died 15 Jul 1777 - end of that line presumably.
JACOB was born at North Carolina, USA, circa 1755.1,3,2,6,7 He married ELIZABETH ?ARMSTRONG at Greene, Tennessee, USA, circa 1776. Both the Davis/LaMaster and Maunu/Niska genealogies give ELIZABETH ARMSTRONG m c 1776 as a wife of JACOB..8,2,7,9,10 JACOB served in the military at Guilford, North Carolina, USA, in 1780.3 JACOB was listed as the head of a family on the in 1790 Census at Greensboro, Guilford, North Carolina, USA.4,11 JACOB registered to pay taxes at Greene, Tennessee, USA, in 1798.12 He married Hannah Fisher at Greene, Tennessee, USA, on 28 January 1800.13 JACOB died in 1820 at Clinton Co, OH.8,3 His body was interred at Shawangunk, NY, at Reformed Church of Shawangunk. I am not positive this is the same Jacob Clearwater, but the name is unusual, the place could be right (Ulster Co), and our JACOB was a Revolutionary War Veteran..14
