Benjamin A Gililland1
M, b. circa 1828
Father | Robert Gililland b. c 1807, d. 1873 |

Benjamin A Gililland The Loving Irish, p143: "In the 1850, Lincoln Co., Mo. Census, given in the first part of this section [see main text for his father], we note a child under #1 - Robert Gilliland, who was Benjamin A., 23 in 1850. Mrs. Marylou Crocker, 1154 Crocker St., Empire, Oregon, 97421, is the great granddaughter of Matilda, b. 1847, daughter of Robert and Annie Moore Gilliland. She says that Benjamin A. was b. May 27, 1830 (her Matilda's bro.) in Simpson Co., Kentucky. In "The History of Lincoln Co. " (Mo.) in 1888, a Benjamin A. Gilliland states his great grandfather ... "came from the boggy part of Ireland at an early age and found a home in Kentucky." [references a letter from Loren A. Gilliland, 1903 Christine Av, Bossier City, LA, 3 Sep 1964 to the author Martrue H Greenwood]
From Kentuckians in Missouri evidence:
p 151: Under "SIMPSON COUNTY" [place of origin in KY]:
"BIRTHDATE: 27 May 1830, NAME OF BIOGRAPHEE: Benjamin A. Gililland, PARENTS/BIRTHPLACE/BIRTHDATE: Robert & Annie (Moore) Ky10/Ky09, SOURCE/PAGE: LINC 543, FIRST MO.CO. [empty], DATE: 1830"
where source "LINC" is: " 'History of Lincoln County, Missouri, From the Earliest Time to the Present ...', Chicago: The Good speed Publishing Company, 1888."
So these two agree on birthdate, but the 1850 Census info in The Loving Irish does not, giving his age as 23 in 1850. There is a problem if 1830 is his birthyear because that is the birthyear (approx) for his brother John R, age 20 in the 1850 Census, taken 11 Sep 1850. The most likely solution is that John R was born in 1831-1835, say, and his age was reported incorrectly to the Census.
My reading of the 1850 census (see Robert Gililland text) gives Benjamin 22 b KY, ie b ca 1828 KY. Benjamin was born at Simpson, Kentucky, USA, circa 1828. Obviously conflict here between the Census and the Kentuckians in Missouri evidence. I wonder if the 27 May 1830 date is a typo for 30 May 1827?.2,3,4,5
