Joseph Berner Cited in Pedigree Resource File, by Gary T Horlacher:
"BOOK: "Annals of Barnerville" by Chauncy Rickard:
The dark and troubled days of the Revolutionary War were raging with bloody fury on the frontier. The Cobleskill settlement had been burned. Cherry Valley had been massacred and the settlement wiped out. Joseph Berner's ambition for an immediate settlement was restrained for a time, while he sojourned with the little which was salvaged of the Cobleskill settlement. Joseph Berner came a single man. During the days of danger and death in the Cobleskill settlement he had met and become enamored with Catharine Borst, daughter of Jacob Borst and sister of Joseph and Lieutenant Jacob Borst who had displayed such outstanding bravery and patriotism in the battle of and burning of the Cobleskill settlement a short time before. When the roar of the Revolutionary canon had ceased and the clouds of death and destruction rolled away, Joseph Berner and Catharine Borst were united in marriage. The groom of 20 years of age with his bride of 22 years of age now came to make the beginning of the Berner settlement, where the residence of Morgan Myers now stands. Here the first clearing was made, and here the pioneer couple began life together about the year 1784."

CHAPTER XXIII: HISTORY OF THE TOWN OF COBLESKILL
"BERNER SETTLEMENT.
In the orchard near Dr. Werner's residence stand two tomb-stones that mark the graves of Joseph Berner and his wife, the first settlers of the place. Mr. Berner was born in 1755 and settled upon the farm now owned and occupied by Peter Myers, and was soon followed by his brother George. A permanent settlement was not made until the close of the Revolution, as frequent invasions of the enemy made it hazardous, being quite a distance from others. Mrs. Berner was a daughter of Jacob Borst, and sister of Joseph and Lieutenant Jacob. Berner built a grist-mill about the year 1789, where Dr. Werner's barn now stands, and a few years after removed it to the site of the old paper-mill. His son, David I., became the possessor and built a larger mill where the present Quackenboss mill now stands, which was burned. In the year 1810 Joseph Berner placed the first burr stone in his mill that was used upon the Cobleskill, it being removed from Alexander Boyd's mill in Middleburgh, to give room for a larger one, which the increasing grain crop of that section demanded. The early built mills were very small, containing but one run of stone, that being either a common sand-stone or a "Sopus," scarcely over two feet in diameter. Fall and spring freshets made it necessary to rebuild several times within a few years, but not being particular about the architectural beauty of the structures, the losses were not considered heavy. Mr. Berner was fortunate in escaping from the Indians in the winter of 1782, as related by author Simms and verified by Jeremiah Berner, the only son of the old patriot at present living, he having arrived at the age of eighty in full possession of his mental, as well as physical faculties."

Hans (Hannes) J (John) Barner There are a lot of ?'s here because Mr Cady is used for much of the evidence. Unfortunately, Mr Cady is notorious for errors in his work. Nevertheless he is often right too, so at least his information can be taken as a potential starting point for later verification.
Charlotte Taylor Luckhurst transcribed Henry Cady's records and says: "Evidently Mr. Cady considered Berner and Barney the same family." I do too.
I will try consistently to place ?'s before facts backed only by Cady. Hans was born on 4 November 1780.2 He was baptized at Schoharie, Schoharie, New York, USA. Religion: (an unknown value).2 He married Anna (?Hannah) Borst on 16 November 1801. Cady is untrustworthy. Here it matches other sources on 3 out of 4 facts, so I am supposing the 4th fact is true too..2,3,4 Hans died in 1872. Cady fact (implies treat skeptically).1

David I Barner 66 M [presumably all b NY]
Nancy Barner 48 F
Marthy Dings 12[19?] F
Martha Dings is his granddaughter by daughter Catherine.
Curiously, David appears to be listed in 1850 NY census for Delaware Co too:
1850 NY Census, Delaware Co, Harpersfield, roll 494, p. 164, dwelling 122, family 133:
Joseph H. Barner 32 M W Farmer 2000 NY
Margaret Barner 32 F NY
Mary Barner 3 F NY
Maria Barner 1 F NY
David I. Barner 65 M W Laborer NY
Peter Dins 41 M W Laborer NY
Peter Dings is father of Martha Dings and husband of David I Barner's deceased daughter Catherine. Perhaps David I. was on a visit and got caught by both census takers.

Primary sources have her birth as 7 Oct 1786, her marriage to Adam Lawyer 14 Jun 1806, and it was her sister Anna who married Peter Halenbeck. Catharina was born at Schoharie, Schoharie, New York, USA, on 7 October 1786.2,4 She married Adam Lawyer at Lutheran Church, Cobleskill, Schoharie, New York, USA, on 14 June 1806.2,5 Catharina Barner died on 3 May 1870 at age 83.6 She was buried after 3 May 1870 at Lawyer Cemetery, Carlisle, Schoharie, New York, USA.7
