Hatfield's History, pp 586-588:

"Having received a good education for the times, Mr. Clark entered into business as a surveyor and conveyancer. He made himself familiar with the common points of law, and was ever ready to aid his neighbors with legal advice gratuitously; and so obtained the name of "The Poor Man's Counsellor." He held the office of High Sheriff of Essex Co., in 1767, and of Clerk to the Colonial Assembly; he was a member of the Committee of Safety in Dec. 1774, and subsequently their secretary; he was chosen to the Provincial Congress, in September, 1775, and was elected by them, June 22, 1776, one of the Delegates from New Jersey to the Continental Congress, in which capacity he hadthe honor of affixing his name to the Declaration of Independence.

He was rechosen to Congress, in 1776, and in 1777, serving until April 3, 1778: again in 1780, 1781, 1782, 1786, 1787 & 1788. He was appointed to the first Constitutional Convention at Annapolis, in 1786; and again, in 1787, but did not attend the latter, on account of ill health. He was chosen, by the people, under the new Consstitution, to the second and third Congresses, and died before the completion of his last term. During his long public career, he proved himself the incorruptible patriot, an active and judicious legislator, a prudent counselor, and a true friend of the people.

His death was occasioned by a coup de soleil, a stroke of the sun, which he survived but two hours. Great respect was shown for his memory on the occasion of his funeral. He remains were deposited in the burying-ground of the Presbyterian church of Rahway. A stone, with the following inscription, marked the spot:

'In memory of ABRAHAM CLARK, Esq., who died Sept. 15th, 1794, in the 69th year of his age. | Firm and decided as a patriot, | Zealous and faithful as a friend ot the public, | He loved his country, | And adhered to her cause, | In the darkest hours of her struggles | Against oppression.'

...

He had long been a member of the First Presbyterian church of this town [Elizabethtown], and was one of its Trustees from 1786 to 1790. ..." Honorable George Harvey Durand was educated at Genesee Wesleyan Seminary, Lima, N. Y. prior to the time his family moved, in 1858, to Michigan. During his first year in Michigan, he taught school at Oxford in Oakland County. He then studied law in the office of Colonel William M. Fenton in Flint and was admitted to the Bar in 1858. He opened an office in Flint, where he practiced for many years. He became a director of the Flint Public Schools and served for over nine years. In 1873 he was elected mayor of Flint and re-elected in 1874 but before completing his second term he was appointed to Congress. In 1892, he accepted an appointment to the Michigan Supreme Court, to fill a vacancy until a successor was chosen.

In August 1893, he was selected by the U. S. Government to prosecute cases against officers of the Merchants' Steamship Company in Portland, Oregon, for smuggling opium and Chinese laborers into the United States. He prosecuted this case successfully, and several wealthy men were sent to prison. In 1893 he was president of the Michigan State Bar Association."

Genesee Co Bar Assn:

"George H. Durand already led a full and interesting life before the time he is credited with founding the Genesee County Bar Association. He served as Alderman and Mayor of Flint, as a Michigan Supreme Court Justice, as a Congressman, and as the president of the Michigan Bar. In spite of humble beginnings, he was a wealthy and well known man, with a handsome mansion near the site of today's Vogt's Flower Shop on Garland Street. He served on appointment of President Cleveland as special prosecutor trying several well-known opium smuggling cases on the west coast. (The City of Durand [MI] is named for him.)

George H. Durand settled into the practice of law in his home town and saw a need for the lawyers of the county to assemble from time to time to discuss issues and ideas common to the courts and to attorneys. Accordingly, the lawyers of the time began regular meetings, a set of by-laws was drawn, and the Genesee County Bar Association was founded in 1897 with Durand is its first President.

Records of the early days of the Bar are not known, and only a few news clippings gleaned from the general news of the day gives us a picture of the Bar at the turn of the century. Durand's son, Charles, was also a charter member of the GCBA; and he practiced law in the area for over 50 years - beginning a tradition of "family practice" in the GCBA that continues to this day.

...

Upon the death of his mentor, George Durand, [John] Carton wrote an eloquent and moving tribute to his late law partner, a tribute which he read to the Supreme Court and which serves as a brief biography of Durand."

From http:// www.usgennet.org/ usa/ mi/ county/ tuscola/ book/ book270-273.htm, a transcription of 1892 Portrait & Biographical Album of Genesee, Lapeer & Tuscola Counties, Chapman Bros., 270-3:

"HON. GEORGE H. DURAND. It is always interesting to trace the small things that have had their influence in changing the channel of a man's life course. Our subject, besides his high standing as a lawyer, has as a sequence to that standing, attained a political prominence that would not have come to him had he adhered to his original intention, which was to be a farmer. His course in life was changed by the influence of a lawyer, who directed his attention to a book entitled "Cowen's Treatises," which so pleased the young man that he recognized his logical tendencies and determined to adopt the law as his profession.

Although known in divers and agreeable ways, perhaps more widely so as Past Grand Master of the Free and Accepted Masons of Michigan, his reputation as an able lawyer and one to whom statescraft is familiar, is widely extended throughout this State. That he stands high in the estimation of the people in his locality is shown by the fact that they have honored him with the highest office within the gift of his district. In 1875-76 he was elected member of Congress from the Sixth District, and his constituents were fully satisfied with the ability and dignity with which he presented their claims before the general representatives of the people.

Mr. Durand is one whose face is a mirror wherein is reflected a most pleasing frankness, open-heartedness and liberality, and his honesty has become proverbial. By the people of his immediate locality he has been elected to various high positions and has served as Mayor of the city. Having struggled hard for his position, he has risen to the top of the ladder and enjoys the rare confidence of his fellow-men. Mr. Durand was born in Cobleskill, Sehoharie County, N. Y., February 21, 1838.

When a boy our subject went to Moorehouse, Hamilton County, N. Y., and lived in the inspiring altitude of the Adirondack Mountains from six until fourteen years of age, and thence went with his family to Livingston County, N. Y., where he was brought up on a farm near Mt. Morris. He attended the common schools and finished at Lima College, where he spent two terms and then engaged in teaching for one winter. Thinking to better his condition, in the fall of 1856 George H. Durand came to Michigan and in the spring of 1858 located in Flint. He at once began the study of law under Col. Fenton, but made his headquarters at Goodrich.

Our subject was admitted to practice at the Genesee County bar in 1858, when he located permanently in this city, and although his practice has bee large here it has not been confined to this point alone, but has extended throughout the State. Aside from his regular law practice, Mr. Durand has held numerous local offices as well as more exalted positions. As a lawyer he is recognized as able and painstaking, having a broad grasp of the philosophy of the law. He has been interested in many important cases which have shed lustre on the jurisprudence of the State. He has been Alderman and School Director, and was Mayor during the term of 1873-74, and in the last-named year was nominated member of Congress on the Democratic ticket. He held this position during 1875-76, and then retired in order to give his attention exclusively to the law. While in Congress he served as Chairman of the Committee on Commerce."

Margaret A "Maggie" Durand [Du722]1,2

F, b. circa 1837
FatherRev George Harvey (Henry) Durand [Du374] b. c 1813, d. 19 Nov 1895
MotherMargaret McMillan b. c 1817, d. Nov 1880
     Margaret A "Maggie" Durand [Du722] Durand Family, p 206:

"Lived (in 1900) at 686 East 48th Place, Chicago, Ill."

History of Saginaw Co (Cooke), p 277:

"The lower grades were taught by the Misses ... Maggie A. Durand."

There are several apparently related items on the LDS FamilySearch site www.familysearch.org, but they disagree with one another and do not cite sources:

FamilySearch Pedigree Resource File, CD No 22, Pin No 953535:

"Margaret A. Durand
...
Birth: abt 1837 Place: of , Connecticut, USA
Spouse: John Phelps Williams ...
Marriage: abt 1857 Place: of , Connecticut, USA"

This almost agrees with Durand Family (b 1844 NY spouse John P Williams).

FamilySearch IGI v4.02, film no 452137, Reference no 67032:

"Margaret DURAND
...
Birth: Abt. 1864
Of Chicago, Cook, Illinois
...
Spouse: John Phelps WILLIAMS"

This diverges substantially from the Durand Family (b 1844 NY).

FamilySearch IGI v4.02, film no 47014:

"Margaret DURAND
...
Spouse: John Phelps WILLIAMS
Marriage: 8 Apr 1885
, Cook, Illinois"

This has the same husband as the others but the 1885 marriage date seems quite late. Might it be a transposed 8 Apr 1858? If so, this would fit with the b c 1837 but not the Durand Family's b 1844.

FamilySearch Ancestral File v4.19:

"Husband's Name
John Phelps WILLIAMS (AFN:1Q1C-06D)
Born: Abt 1830 Place: Of , Connecticut
Married: Abt 1857 Place: Of , Connecticut
...
Wife's Name
Margaret A. DURAND (AFN:1Q1C-07L)
Born: Abt 1837 Place: Of , Connecticut
Married: Abt 1857 Place: Of , Connecticut"

This m c 1857 supports the conjectured transposition above (8 Apr 1858). But none of this is satisfactory evidence. There is lots of info on the FamilySearch site for John Phelps William's pedigree.
Margaret was born at New York, USA, circa 1837.3,4,5 She married John Phelps Williams circa 1857.6,7,5

Lorenzo Thurston Durand [Du723] Durand Family, p 206:

"At the age of 17, Lorenzo Thurston Durand entered the offices of J. Brousseau to study law for a year, which he continued for three more years in the offices of Webber and Smith in Saginaw. In 1870, he graduated from the law department of the Univeristy of Michigan and became assistant to the Honorable Dwight May, attorney general of the State. After a year, he entered practice in East Saginaw. In 1878, he became prosecuting attorney of Saginaw County. Later, he was associated with Frank Emerick and, until 1887, with John M. Brewer. He was attorney for many companies and banks and a member of the Board of Public Works and of St. John's Episcopal Church.

Ref: 'Bench and Bar of Michigan', 1897, pp. 266-68."

History of Saginaw Co (Mills), p 210:

"... until 1878 when Mr. Durand was elected prosecuting attorney of Saginaw County by a large majority. He was scarcely twenty-nine years of age, but his conduct of the office was so satisfactory to the public that he was re-elected by a handsome majority in 1880 in a county that usually in presidential elections sent Republican candidates to office."

p 212:

"In 1902, however, he was persuaded to accept the Democratic nomination for governor, and made a strong campaign against the late governor Aaron T. Bliss, being defeated by a small majority. A short time after he was given a complimentary vote for the United States Senate by the State Legislature." I'm unsure what this last statement means. Does it mean he was elected Senator from MI?

Political Graveyard:

"Durand, Lorenzo Thurston (1849-1917) Son-in-law of John Moore; brother of George Harman Durand. Born in Morehouseville, N.Y., December 9, 1849. Democratic candidate for Governor of Michigan, 1902. Died August 7, 1917. Burial location unknown." Lorenzo was born at Morehouseville, Hamilton, New York, USA, on 9 December 1849.2,3,4,5,6 He married Florence C Moore on 15 February 1872. Chapman's history gives her name as Flora C Moore and date as 1872. Mills's history gives date as 16 Feb 1872..7,8,9 Lorenzo died on 7 August 1917 at Saginaw, Saginaw, Michigan, USA, at age 67.10
