"The following Obituary appeared in the Grand Island, Nebraska Independent, Newspaper, upon the death of Sen. George C. Humphrey (Jan. 28, 1846- June 22, 1925). Humphrey was my maternal great-great grandfather.
The Honorable George C. Humphrey, state senator for the district comprised of Hall, Howard and Greeley counties, passed away at his home at 103 East 8th Street in Grand Island Nebraska. He passed away Monday morning at 10:55 am at the age of 79 years, four months and 24 days. Arrangements for the funeral are awaiting the replies from relatives. Humphrey had been more or less ill since early in the legislative session but his condition did not become serious until about two months ago. Heart trouble was given as the cause of death.
Sen. Humphrey was born at Coolville, Ohio, Jan. 28, 1846. Both of his parents died when he was still very young. He was “bound out”. With the first family he remained until he was about 13. He spent a year with another family. Then a year and a half with a third family. About this time the Civil War was on and at the age of 15 years and nine months he enlisted for three years. At the end of the term he enlisted again and was Honorably discharged after the war. He was in 16 battles and was never wounded. He was taken prisoner and so kept as a prisoner for over a month. Then in 1866 he became a pioneer coming west. He returned to Ohio two years later for his bride, going by team and returning, on his honeymoon trip, in the same manner. During his life in the army he was engaged in the battles of Monterey, Shaws Ridge, McDowell, Franklin, Strasburgh, Cross Keys, Cedar Mountain, Freeman’s Ford, White Sulfur Springs, Waterloo Bridge, second Bill Run, Aldie and Chancellorsville, Virginia Gettysburg, PA, Camp Baldwin, Florida Gainesville and John’s Island, South Carolina.
In February 1866 he left Ohio for Junction City Kansas, where he stayed until June of that year. He went from there to in Iowa remaining there until February 1874 when he moved Nebraska. He married Ms. Margaret Jane Perot at her home near Coolville, Ohio Nov. 5th 1868. To reach his bride he drove alone with the mule team in the spring wagon from Iowa to Ohio in 22 days, and he was married and started back on Nov. 8 having his wife and her sister Carolyn along on the return journey. He arrived at his home in Iowa December 5th having spent 26 days on the way of this union there were born five sons and four daughters Charles J. of York, Nebraska, George H. of Grand Island, Paul V. of Portland, OR Thayer of Lincoln, J. Leslie of Grand Island and Gertrude of this City and Mrs. W. L. Parsons of Mason City Iowa. Two daughters Mary O. and Anna Maude have preceded him in death.

He still owns the same property. Mrs. Humphrey died February 15th 1899. to with him as his farm was rented, he moved to Grand Island in October 1901. He remarried in Omaha Jan. 181902, Mrs. Charlotte the flowers, who died March 13th 1916. There were no children by the second wife.
