     Electa Johnson First Settlers, p 195: "Electa [Johnson], born 25th December, 1797, married 26th April, 1815, Abraham R. Colwell, son of John Cauldwell, and went to Urbana, Ohio, and died 15th November, 1826." Electa was born on 25 December 1797.¹ She married Abraham Rutan Colwell on 26 April 1815.² Electa died on 15 November 1826 at Ohio, USA, at age 28.¹

Peter was born at New Providence, Essex, New Jersey, USA, on 16 February 1792.^1,2 Peter died on 16 November 1847 at Urbana, Champaign, Ohio, USA, at age 55.^2,3 His body was interred at Urbana, Champaign, Ohio, USA.²

     Robert M Cauldwell First Settlers p 69: "Robert M. married his cousin Betsey Cauldwell, daughter of Abraham." Robert was born at New Providence, Essex, New Jersey, USA, in 1794. Date and place, LDS only.^1,2 Robert died in 1840 at Ohio, USA.² His body was interred at Ohio, USA.²

     Mary Cauldwell First Settlers, p 69: "Mary, born 14th Feb. 1757, married Nathaniel Littell, son of David."

Mentioned in father's will as Mary Little. Mary was born at Morris, New Jersey, USA, on 14 February 1757. LDS gives place as "By Passaic River, Morris Co, Nj".^3,2 Mary died on 8 January 1823 at New Jersey, USA, at age 65.²

     David was born in January 1718.¹ David died on 2 August 1790 at age 72.¹

     Robert Cauldwell First Settlers, p 69: "Robert, born 13th Sept. 1762, married Mary Ball, born 25th Aug. 1763, daughter of Joseph."

First Settlers, p 31: "and whose daughter, Mary [Ball], married Robert Cauldwell, son of William Cauldwell, of Passaic Valley, and went to Ohio"

Mentioned in his father's will. Robert was born at Morris, New Jersey, USA, on 13 September 1762. LDS evidence gives place as "By Passaic River, Morris Co, Nj".^1,2 Robert died in February 1841 at Near Covington, Warren, Indiana, USA, at age 78. Covington is now in Fountain Co.² His body was interred at Warren, Indiana, USA.²

     She married Milton Rutan.¹ She married Isaac Mars. Hannah was born at New Providence, Essex, New Jersey, USA, circa 1811.²

     Asahel [Azel] Byram Colwell First Settlers, p 70: "Azel [Cauldwell], married Jane Stewart; lives near Hill Grove, Darke Co., and had children: 1. Dennis; 2. John; 3. James McNab; 4. Electa; 5. Martha; 6. Catherine." Asahel was born at New Providence, Essex, New Jersey, USA, on 25 December 1813.² He married Jane Stewart in 1835.^3,4 Asahel died on 13 August 1873 at Eagleville, Harrison, Missouri, USA, at age 59.² His body was interred at Harrison, Missouri, USA.²

     Benjamin was born at Darke, Ohio, USA, in 1815.¹ He married Matilda Plummer in 1837.² Benjamin Ludlow Colwell died before 13 March 1903 at Wood River, Hall, Nebraska; Correspondent Judy Simpson, who sent the obituary, adds note that Benjamin died 27 Feb 1903.

ALMOST FOUR SCORE AND TEN.
A Former Resident of DeWitt County Dies at His Home in Nebraska, Aged 87 years.

The following is from a Wood River (Neb.) paper. The deceased lived in this county many years, and two of his sons, Milton and Oren, live in Clinton.

Grandpa Colwell on last Friday, after several weeks of suffering and pain from the ravages of disease, passed away, at peace with God and man, and his soul took its flight to the great beyond. On Monday friends were permitted to view the remains at the home from 10 to 1, and at 2 o’clock funeral services were held in the Presbyterian church, conducted by Rev. J. C. Irwin, in the presence of an unusually large number of relatives and friends who came to pay a last sad tribute of respect to the sterling worth and many Christian virtues of the deceased. The floral decorations were very beautiful. Rev. Irwin spoke very feelingly of the many admirable qualities of mind and heart of the deceased and reviewed his life’s history in a pleasing manner. The services over at the church, the funeral cortege formed and, despite the very bad condition of the roads, a large number attended the last sad rites at the Wood River cemetery, where all that was mortal of Grandpa Colwell was consigned to Mother Earth.

Benjamin L. Colwell was the oldest person in Wood River and was certainly a man among men, as a brief review of his life will demonstrate. He was born in Darke county, Ohio, in 1815, where he grew to manhood, when he moved to Champaign county, Ohio, where he lived until June 18, 1850, when he moved to DeWitt county, Ill., Jan. 18, 1850 and resided until 1872, when he moved to Nebraska. [These dates don’t make sense.]

He was married in 1837 to Miss Matilda Plummer and of this union ten children were born, seven of whom survive: Milton R. Colwell and Oren T. Colwell, of Clinton, Ill; Mrs. N. T. Brittin, Mrs. N. C. Burkerd, Mrs. Chas. Brocklehurst, Mrs. Truman Taylor and Will Colwell, together with the aged wife and mother to mourn the loss of kind and affectionate husband and father. Of his children, there are 26 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. The deceased’s marriage with Miss Plummer, 66 years ago, was a most happy one and was much longer and more fruitful than is usually allotted to husband and wife. Early in life the deceased embraced the Christian religion and was ever a faithful worker in his Master’s vineyard. When he came to Wood River he was one of the prime movers in building the Presbyterian church of this place, of which he was a faithful and consistent member up to the hour of his death. Mr. Colwell started in life with little or nothing, but by industry, thrift and good judgment he soon had a competence and of this competence he was always liberal in helping the poor and needy and aiding every worthy cause. Of book learning he had little, but nevertheless he was an educated man for he was a deep student and a keen observer of nature and profited greatly thereby.

The life of Mr. Colwell in many respects was one well worthy of emulation. A Christian man, always honorable, liberal, charitable and unassuming; he was a useful citizen wherever he lived, and in his passing away, at the ripe old age of 87, he leaves behind none but who are glad to commend his life and to believe that as his soul took its flight to Him who gave it, the portals of the pearly city opened wide and the greeting was: “Well done, good and faithful servant, enter thou into the joy of the Lord.”.³

     Charlotte was born at New Providence, Essex, New Jersey, USA, circa 1817.¹ She She is not mentioned as an heir in the chancery court record of 7 Aug 1834, so probably died before her father did. She is probably the child in First Settlers who died in infancy. on 7 August 1834.

     Phebe died at Champaign, Ohio, USA.¹ She Named for her grandmother. Phebe was born at New Providence, Essex, New Jersey, USA, circa 1819.¹

     Mary was born at New Providence, Essex, New Jersey, USA, circa 1821.¹

     John was born at New Providence, Essex, New Jersey, USA, on 29 July 1824.¹

     He married Lucinda Rutan.¹ Peter was born at New Providence, Essex, New Jersey, USA, on 24 February 1825.² Peter died on 19 July 1903 at Champaign, Ohio, USA, at age 78.² His body was interred at Mechanicsburg, Champaign, Ohio, USA.²

     ?Jane Cauldwell This is an error. Judging by the birthplace, I am guessing that this is Jane Stewart, the wife of Azel (qv). Katharine D's email gives Jane Stewart's birth as 1817, however. She suggests that this might be Jane Ward wife of William Johnson Colwell (First Settlers, 70). ?Jane was born at Near Hill Grove, Darke, Ohio, USA, in 1836.²

     Jane was born at Pennsylvania, USA, circa 1817.¹ She married Asahel [Azel] Byram Colwell in 1835.^2,1

     Phebe was born circa 1734.¹ As of before 1768,her married name was Johnson.¹ Phebe died on 18 November 1788.¹

     Sally was born.

     Jane was born.

     Daniel was born.¹

     Anna was born on 2 September 1771.¹ Anna died on 6 March 1828 at age 56.¹
