Robert Gililland p 1 of Gililland Research notes:

"Robert:
1850 - Lincoln Co; MO Census
b. 1807, m. Ann Moore, b. 1809, KY.
Children: Ben - b. KY, John - b. MO, 1830; Mary A, Martha 12, Eliz. 10, Wm. H 8, Robert D. - 6, Matilda 3, Geo. W. - 5 mos. [ambiguously 1800 KY - Robert - age 43, but this might be a separate census listing]"

p2:

"I believe our John [JOHN RICHARDSON GILILLAND] is the older brother of Mathias, perhaps Robert. They can probably be found in KY or PA. They were too young to serve in the Rev. War but their father could have served. Land Applications list the names of wife and children, birth dates and place of birth. I have not searched these."

From Kentuckians in Missouri evidence:

p 151: Under "SIMPSON COUNTY" [place of origin in KY]:

"BIRTHDATE: 27 May 1830, NAME OF BIOGRAPHEE: Benjamin A. Gililland, PARENTS/BIRTHPLACE/BIRTHDATE: Robert & Annie (Moore) Ky10/Ky09, SOURCE/PAGE: LINC 543, FIRST MO.CO. [empty], DATE: 1830"

where source "LINC" is: " 'History of Lincoln County, Missouri, From the Earliest Time to the Present ...', Chicago: The Good speed Publishing Company, 1888."

[Listed under "Gilliland" (sic) in index]

From "The Loving Irish - The Gillilands", p 142, quoting the 1850 Lincoln Co, MO Census:

"Robert, age 43, wife Ann Moore. He was a farmer. b. Kentucky, 1810. His wife was b. 1809. All their children were b. Mo., except Benjamin, age 23, b. Kentucky. The rest were: John R., 20; Mary A. 14; Martha, 12; Elizabeth, 10; William H., 8; Robert D., 6; Matilda, 3: and George W., 5 months. Census taken Sept. 11, 1850"

The 1830 Lincoln Co Census has:

Robert Gilliland 2M <5, 1M 20-<30, 1F 20-<30

[quite difficult to read]

Note that the 1850 data implies that, for 1830, Robert would be 20 (or 23), Ann would be 21, Benjamin 3, John R just born and no others. This is consistent with the 1830 census data.

The 1840 Lincoln Co Census has:

Robt Gililland 2M 5-<10, 1M 30-<40, 2F <5, 2F 5-<10, 1F 30-<40

The 1850 data implies that, for 1840, Robert would be 30 (or 33), Ann would be 31, Benjamin 13, John R 10, Mary 4, Martha 2, Elizabeth either just born or not yet born. The parents fit, the 2 youngest daughters fit, but the others don't. We might account for the 2M simply having been put one column wrong, but the 2F 5-<10 are a puzzle.

The Gililland Tree website lists:

"Robert Gilliland KY m Annie Moore Simpson KY
Robert Gilliland 43 M (1807) KY
Anne 43 M (1807) KY came to Lincoln Co 1830 [clearly should be F]
Benjamin 22 M (1828)
John R. 20 M (1830)
Mary A. 14 F (1836)
Martha 12 F (1838)
Elizabeth 10 F (1840)
William H 8 M (1842)
Robert 6 M (1844)
Matilda 3 F (1847)
George W. 5mo. M (1849)"

Robert Gililland's will, 21 Mar 1873 lists his wife Anne and the following children:

1. Benjamin A Gililland
2. John R Gililland
3. Charity E Holly
4. Elizabeth F. McGlossen
5. Matilda M VeerKam or VeerKamp
6. Robert S Gililland
7. George W Gililland
8. Martha Ross

and his grandson Stephen D Hudson.

Here is my reading of the 1850 MO census, Lincoln Co., District No. 49, roll 404, p 421, dwelling 420, family 420:

"Robert Gilliland 43 M Farmer 2000 Kentucky
Ann " 43 F " [KY]
Benjamin " 22 M Mechanic " [KY]
John R " 20 M Laborer Missouri
Mary A " 14 F " [MO]
Martha " 12 F " [MO]
Elizabeth " 10 F " [MO]
William H " 8 M " [MO]
Robert D " 6 M " [MO]
Matilda " 3 F " [MO]
George W [or N or M] " 5/12 M " [MO]." Robert was born at Simpson, Kentucky, USA, circa 1807. The Gililland Research evidence gives his birthdate as 1807. The LDS family group sheet evidence gives his birthplace as Indiana PA, 1807. The birth info for wife Annie is in agreement between the different evidences, but not for Robert, so it is still in question.

The 1850 Census info quoted in The Loving Irish evidence gives his age as 43 (implies 1807) but then says he was born 1810!
.7,8,2,9,10,11 He married Anne "Annie" Moore circa 1826. Son Benjamin b abt 1827.12,11 Robert was listed as the head of a family on the in 1830 Census at Lincoln, Missouri, USA.3 Robert was listed as the head of a family on the in 1840 Census at Lincoln, Missouri, USA.4 Robert was listed as the head of a family on the in 1850 Census at Lincoln, Missouri, USA.11 Robert died in 1873 at Lincoln, Missouri, USA.10

"Alexander Hantrum Gililland born in Lincoln Co., Mo Dec. 12, 1813 died March 13? 1896? aged 72 Ys 2 Ms 22 Ds". The middle A in Alexander looks more like an I and the first letter of Hantrum might be an M or an N instead. The death date that makes sense with the birthdate and age is Mar 3, 1886.      ?Jane Sanders (Saunders) Tentative. Although she is not listed in the Sanders Family Bible, it is known that James Sr lived with her when he was over 100 years old. He also deeded her two slaves, Nancy and Lucy, 12 Oct 1810, and another one, Sofae, in 1829 at ages 104 and 113, respectively. So she is a close relative if not a daughter. The census calculations evidence supports her as his daughter and also a birthdate of 1792. If this is indeed the case, then her mother was 51 at her birth and her father was 76. But he did live to just a few months shy of 118.

From Teresa Wilson Wiese's Family Group Sheet evidence:
"Jane is a relative of our Saunders family. James Sr.was living with her on the 1830 Census (We know he was over age 100 at that time, which is also shown on the Census). Certain deeds in Rockingham Co. imply that Jane was a daughter of James, Sr. Additional research is needed to determine the above relationships." A theory of hers is that Jane might have married someone with the surname Saunders, thus keeping her maiden name. "Or was she the daughter-in-law of James Jr. and Sarah marrying an unknown child? [This doesn't fit with the census calculations evidence.] She may even have been a second wife of James Jr. If Sarah died early, James Jr. may have remarried. ... We do know that Sarah lived until at least 1806 (deed). [So this theory doesn't seem to fit.] It is possible that Jane was a wife of John Sanders, son of James Sr. and brother of James Jr. ..."

The Family Group Sheet evidence cites a census record showing that Jane's household in 1830 consisted of "1m. 5-10/1m. 10-15/2m. 15-20/1m. 20-30/1m. 100+/ 1f. 0-5/ 1f. 30-40". The 100+-year-old was James Sr. and the 1f. 30-40 is Jane herself (presumably about 38), leaving a family of 5 male children and 1 female child. Further evidence is cited (deed) that has James Sr deeding her two slaves Nancy and Lucy on 12 Oct 1810, Rockingham Co, NC.

From Teresa Wiese's Lorenzo Dow Sanders evidence: "I ... wonder why Jane was not mentioned in the Bible record. Even if the names were added at a later date (and they probably were), the family at that time would know about Jane. If she had died young, then she might have been forgotten by family members (though Elenor was remembered). But Jane lived for many years and even moved with Reason Saunders and family to Tennessee. A descendant of Jane (Nina) has stated that she believes Jane was not a Sanders but was Jane Galloway before she married into the Sanders family."

The 1850 Giles Co, TN census has Jane Saunders, age 58, F, b NC living with Claibourn Saunders, 25, M, Teamster, b NC. ?Jane was born at North Carolina, USA, circa 1792.1,2,5 She married an unknown person before 1820.2 ?Jane died at Giles, Tennessee, USA.6

John Saunders The problem is to establish John as brother to James Sr, and hence Robert as James Sr's father.

From Teresa Wilson Wiese's Robert Saunders Family Group Sheet:

"John Saunders (b. abt. 1715 and m. Sarah Cox) is believed to be the brother of our ancestor James Sanders, b. 1716. John was the son of Robert Saunders (b. abt. 1690, of York and Halifax Co., VA). Mrs. Ann King, who has done extensive research on this Saunders/Sanders family (and is considered by most to be the foremost researcher of the Saunders family of the Southern U.S.), has stated that circumstantial evidence leads her to believe James and John were brothers. James and John both lived near each other in Halifax Co. Virginia (on the South side of Childry's Creek) and both used the same mark on trees (I S - the "I" having a line through the center) to denote their land. (However, the reader should be made aware that the "I" with a line through the center seemed to be a symbol used to denote the letter "J" during this time period. Since both men had the same initials, "J. S.", it is possible they were just using their initials to mark their land. However, in defense of the belief that these men were brothers, a quick glance of other land deeds in this county does not show any other men with the same initials using the same symbols as John and James did, for their mark.It is also very unlikely that two men, with the same surname, who live near (or possibly even next to) each other on the same side of the same creek in the same county at the same time would use the same bymbol to mark their land, if they were not related. Imagine the confusion if both claimed the "Red Oak tree marked with an I.S." denoted their own property!) Another piece of evidence in support of the theory that James and John were brothers (or at least related), is that they both left Virginia and moved to the same area of North Carolina at about the same time. James moved first, arriving by 1767, and John by 1770 (per land deeds in Rockingham Co. N.C. and Halifax Co. VA). The similarity of naming patterns also helps to establish a possible relationship between James and John. Both James and John named sons, Robert, William, James, and John.
