Col Hiram Smith Although he is usually referred to as Col Smith, I have not found evidence of his being a Colonel in the Revolutionary War. However, he definitely was a Lieutenant in the Continental Army:

Officers & Men in the Revolutionary War, Part II, Digest and Revisions, p 29:

"Smith, Hiram. Private, Continental Army; Serjeant, ditto; Lieutenant, ditto."

Also, Part I, Official Roster of State Troops and Militia, p 457:

"Smith, Hiram. Ensign, Captain Hinman's company, "Eastern Battalion," Morris."

Perhaps he was a Colonel in a later conflict?

Parritt Homestead:

"On January 15 1833 Col Hiram Smith was granted a pension of $101.66 per year for having served a private, sergeant and lieutenant in the Army of the American Revolution. On April 27 1833 he died. his tombstone is to be found in Parsippany Cemetery.

The March before his death he had drawn up an agreement between his two sons Hiram Smith Jr. and Samuel P. Smith, by which the lands which were of their mother Eleanor Smith deceased should all come into the possession of Samuel and should belong to him. An article of some interest in this agreement provided that Jack, a negro servant who had served Samuel P. Smith seven years should now serve Hiram J. seven years and then become the joint property of both Hiram and Samuel P. and that they were to be equally responsible for his support and maintenance the rest of his life. The document was witnessed by Walter Kirkpatrick."

Richard Smith evidence:

"Lt. Col. Hiram Smith, born 1756, died 1833. It is from this man that we are all descended. At the age of 20 he entered the Continental Army as a sergeant. His report of his various services - Albany, Johnstown, Ft. Stanwix, For Schuyler, Ticonderoga - is all interesting. (I have always heard that it was at Ticonderoga that he received his Colonelcy.) My great grandfather, often referred to as "Col. Hiram" or "Senior", married first Eleanor Parritt (I can't locate that date.) She was the only daughter of Samuel Parritt, and she came from Albany. Her mother was the daughter of Joseph and Eleanor Allin, Alling, or Allen. Colonel Hiram Smith was a man of affairs in his time and community. He was Justice of the Peace, Member of the State Assembly, Sheriff, County Judge, Major of N. J. Militia, and Trustee of the Parsippany Presbyterian Church. He possessed commanding presence and great dignity of bearing. After marriage to Eleanor Parritt they lived in the Smith homestead on Whippany Road with a porch 2 stories high known to us as Florence Smith's house. They had 8 children, all of whom lived to maturity. After Eleanor Parritt Smith's death in 1810, this site became the household of Col. Hiram and his second wife, Susan Ten Eyck, daughters Nancy and Addie, son Hiram and his wife (Mary Allen Osborn) and their 6 children. Susan Ten Eyck Smith was the widow of Dr. Henry White Darlee of Parsippany. Through this "second consort" we have inherited several fine pieces of furniture. A mirror with a golden eagle atop of it hangs beside me as I write; a settee is now at the Richard Smith Baldwin house. About 1830 grandmother decided that they had better have their own home; so grandfather bought from a Mr. Cobb a house on the ridge about a mile away that is now owned and occupied by my nephew, Richard Smith Baldwin."

Also, this evidence says that he and his 2d wife had no issue.

Parsippany Gravestones:

"Col. Hiram Smith (Revolutionary Soldier) 1756 Apr. 27, 1833." Hiram was born in 1756.3 He married Eleanor ["Nelly"] Parrott at Troy Hills, Morris, New Jersey, USA, on 14 October 1778.4,5,6 He married Susan Ten Eyck after 22 December 1810. His first wife died on this date.3 Hiram applied for a military pension at New Jersey, USA, on 15 January 1833.6 Hiram died on 27 April 1833 at New Jersey, USA.6,7 His body was interred at Parsippany, Morris, New Jersey, USA, at Parsippany Cemetery.6,7

Phebe Parrott The marriage attribution here is suspect. The "logic" is this: This is the only Phebe Parrott I did not have paired up with a husband. First Settlers refers to Phebe Parrott, wife of Caleb Potter. She is the right age, right religion, and living not too far away to make the match to the current Phebe make sense.

First Settlers, p 328:

"Mr. Caleb Potter died 27th May, 1799, aged 49 years. His first wife died 25th April, 1771, aged 31 years [implies she was b 1740]"

The 1740 birth is a problem however, since her putative parents were married in 1745. Could her death year be off by 10 - ie 1781? This would imply her b 1751, which matches her m 1770 and her parents m 1745. Her baptism in 1749 could also mean that she was born b abt 1749 rather than abt 1740.

The d 1771 has another problem. She was married 1770, but had two children. Something is not right! Again, if it were 1781 instead, then everything works.

Marriages, 1770:
"Potter, Caleb, & Phebe Parrat, April 23."

Colonial and Revolutionary Morris County, p 112:

"Others [doctors of colonial Morris County] were ... Dr. Joseph Parrott of Troy Hills ..."

Parritt Homestead:

"Dr. Parritt then built a second house, still larger on the same site. It is said in the large parlors of this house he drank himself to death in grief over the death in 1795 of his brother Archibald, of whose attachment for Adrianna Von Beverhoudt, and whose untimely death by drowning off Long Island Mrs. B. S. Condit has already told you.

Never having married, the estate, after his decease, wich occurred in 1801 was placed in the hands of a Commission consisting of Aaron Kitchell, J. Silas Condit and Benjamin Burroughs of Morris County, appointed June 1801 by Elisha Boudinot, 4th Justice of the Supreme Court of New Jersey, to be divided between his three remaining sisters, Elizabeth who married in 1767 Henry Howell, born 1747, son of Charles Howell and Deborah Jessup of Orange County; Ann, wife of John Cobb; Eleanor, wife of Col. Hiram Smith; and the heirs of Charity the deceased wife of Silas Parritt. at this date the entire estate including a tract of Parsippany Woods comprised about 520 acres. The Homestead Farm consisted of about 440 acres, in the neighborhood of two hundred acres less than the original farm of Mr. Alling."

(?) was born. He The Carroll Co (Jim Lair) evidence gives a possibility, not proved:

"Several members of the Baker family who have done extensive genealogical research believe that John Baker's grandfather was Isaac Baker, and that he lived with his wife and children - six sons and three daughters - near Baltimore, Maryland. Then, in 1765, when the danger of Indian attack began to diminish, the Isaac Baker family moved into the beautiful Holston River area of Southwest Virginia, between the Cumberland and Appalachian Mountains.

In later years, Isaac Baker died and was buried in Bristol, Tennessee. Isaac Baker's six sons were: William Baker, Isaac Baker, Jr., Joshua Baker, Evan Baker, John Baker, and Thomas Baker. A local history states that of that group William and John Baker were hunters and explorers of both Kentucky and Tennessee."

So one of these sons would be our Mr BAKER by this theory.

Green Wade Hampton1,2,3,4,5,6

M, b. 12 December 1793, d. 27 December 1878
Green Wade Hampton From the Schuler Family Group Sheet evidence:

"Notes:
1820 Wayne Co.KY census
1828 Dec 25 Cumberland Co, KY, Sulpher Creek, Land deeded to Sara and Green Wade Hampton by Isaac Riddle.
1830 Cumberland Co,KY census
1850 Green Wade HAMPTON was a wagonmaster in Barry Co. MO census
1850 LaClede Co MO census
1860 Carroll Co AR census
1850 Census/Goodspeed says he was born in Maine"

Green had two other wives: Sarah Johnson and Mary-Miriam Bryant.

The following interesting note was supplied by Alva M Smith. It is an item from "Madison County Musings", Spring 1985, an article about Pleasant M Johnson:

"In January, 1837, he [Johnson] was elected the first Sheriff of Madison County [AR], an office he held until the elections of 1844. One of his last duties as Sheriff, Pleasant Johnson escorted a man by the name of Green M. Hampton to the State Penitentiary at Little Rock."

Mrs Smith suggests that this is Green Wade Hampton, that the script M and script W are often confused. We do know that Green's wife Frankie Baker died about 1845 and their three children were raised by a succession of relatives from that time on. If Green were in prison, this would explain why he didn't raise them. Some researchers call him the "Black Sheep" in the family. Perhaps this is why.

"This fellow moved around a lot. He was born in VA 12Dec1793, according to 1820 Census. He lived in Wayne Co. KY in 1828. Goodspeed 1850 census says he was born in Maine. One of his wives was Frankie BAKER, born 1814 in MO, another was Sarah ?, another was Mary BRYANT. (George W. HAMPTON married Martha BRYANT in Barry Co, MO in 1849.) Green Wade married Frankie in Carroll, AR in 1838. He was a wagonmaster in Barry Co, MO in 1850.

There is a FamilySearch Ancestral File (LDS) that gives Green Wade HAMPTON and Frances "Frankie" BAKER as parents of Michael Wade HAMPTON. It also lists Wade HAMPTON and Anna BAKER as his parents. Unfortunately, the data for these two sets of parents don't match:

GWH b 12 Dec 1793 VA; WH b 28 Mar 1818 SC
GWH d 27 Dec 1878 TX; WH d 11 Apr 1902 SC
FB b 1814 MO; AB b c 1822 OK
FB d 1845 AR; AB d 1846
and so forth

Whereas GWH and FB married and died in Carroll Co AR, where Michael Wade Hampton was born, WH and AB appear to have no connection with AR. In a way, this is unfortunate for us, because WH is descended from a quite prestigious family of war heroes. Here is his lineage, youngest first:

Wade Hampton m Anna Baker
Wade II Hampton m Ann Fitzsimmons
Gen Wade Hampton m Harriet Flud
Anthony Hampton m Anne Elizabeth Preston
John II Jr Hampton m Margaret Wade
and more

"Gen" Wade Hampton was a Col in the Revolutionary War. In fact, he and his brothers Richard and Henry were all colonels in that war, and their brother Edward was a captain. This is from "King's Mountain and Its Heroes" by Draper, 83. Our BETHUEL RIGGS fought in this same battle of King's Mountain.

There is also a famous Gen Wade Hampton but he is of later vintage. The following is from the webpage: http://www.moc.org/Articles/scmain.html

"Gen. Wade Hampton, was appointed in May 1864 to replace J. E. B. Stuart as commander of Robert E. Lee's cavalry corps. When Gen. William T. Sherman's army invaded South Carolina in 1865, Hampton returned to his native state in a vain attempt to rally forces of resistance.
...
Reluctant to abide by a surrender he did not negotiate, Wade Hampton similarly did not admit defeat in politics. His election as governor in 1876 (after a disputed, often violent campaign) signaled the end of Reconstruction in the South. The former Confederate cavalry leader then won election to a seat among former foes in the U.S. Senate."

This matches the footnote on p 83 of King's Mountain and Its Heroes, mentioned above, which talks about a SC newpaper article written in 1843 by Col Wade Hampton Sr, father of "the present Senator Hampton, of that State." Since this was published in 1881, this is surely the same Senator, and General, mentioned above. Note that our Green Wade Hampton d 1878 and his son Michael Wade Hampton seems to have spent much of his life in AR and TX, not SC. I suspect that Wade Hampton was a popular name to give kids after both the Rev and Civil Wars.

Re "Gen" Wade Hampton in the LDS records, there is this entry in the Columbia Encyclopedia, 6th edition:

"In the War of 1812 the battle of Chateaugay was fought (1813) on the banks of the river in Quebec between an American invading force of 7,000 under Gen. Wade Hampton and some 750 Canadians and Native Americans. The Americans were defeated and had to abandon their plan to attack Montreal."

So it might well be that Col Wade Hampton in the Rev War went to become Gen Wade Hampton in the War of 1812. Indeed, from the HAMPTON-L Archives online:

"Civil War General Wade Hampton was the son of Wade Hampton II
who was the son of Revolutionary War General Wade Hampton who was the son of Anthony and Elizabeth Preston Hampton who was the son of John and Margaret Wade Hampton who was the son of John and Mary Mann Hampton who was the son of Thomas Hampton b. 1623 who was the son of William, arrived VA 1620, and Joanne Hampton. I have dates, spouses, children, etc... for the three Wade Hamptons, but not from memory." [except I believe the Rev War "Gen" was only a "Col" - Alvy]

Ellsberry marriage records for Barry Co, MO have all these:

Green W Hampton to Mary Bryant, 1 Aug 1850
George W Hampton to Martha Bryant, 16 Apr 1849
Aaron E Hampton to Jerusha A Johnson 5 Apr 1855

perhaps all brothers, and perhaps Mary and Martha are sisters?

William Baker A confusion in the John and Willie Elmey Baker family is son William. Does he or does he not exist? Several sources list William and Aaron as separate sons; some list William Aaron as one son. What seems to be the definitive evidence, David Johnson's estate papers, lists two separate sons, William and Aaron as heirs of Willie Elmey (Johnson) Baker. By comparison, the First Families of Carroll Co, AR evidence does not list William but says "it is known that Aaron Baker sometimes signed his name as "William Baker" during his younger years."

The Carroll Co, AR, First Families evidence, which doesn't list William or James, says, "the Federal Census of 1830 for Cape Girardeau County, Missouri, records another unknown son, younger than the aforementioned Sheppard, who did not migrate into Northwest Arkansas with this historic family."

Correspondent Alva M Smith takes Aaron Baker to be William Aaron Baker. She lists two William Bakers in the Cape Girardeau 1830 MO Census:

"P. 463
William Baker 0 1 1 0 0 1, 1 1 0 0 1
...
Page 466
*William Baker 1 0 0 0 1, 0 0 0 0 1
*I took this as my William Aaron Baker & his wife Barbara Shell Baker (B: 15 Feb 1804) and there son John Sherman Baker B: 1 Aug 1828"

She also points out that John Baker on p 466 and William Baker on p 466 are neighbors. A more readable rendering of the second William's census data is 1M 0-5, 1M 20-30, 1 F 20-30.

Frank Baker 1983:

Willie Ellen 1836 MO
Frederick J. 1837 MO
Thomas B. 1839 MO
James 1842 MO
Mary A. 1844 MO
Jonathan 1848 MO
Aaron 1850 MO"

Letter from Alva M Smith, 24 Jun 2001 (in which she passed to me the Frank Baker 1983 evidence):

"Please notice there at the bottom of enclosure #1. "Who is this one".

This just has to be John Baker and Willie Elmey Johnson Baker's oldest son!! I always assumed William Baker was the oldest child for he is named 1st in these court records as heirs of Willie Elmey Baker.

William Baker born 1805 fits the 1830 Census MO Cape Girardeau Co. 1 0 0 0 1 - 0 0 0 0 1. William coulw be 25 years old; Elizabeth would be 23 yrs. old; son uder five years old. This son by 1850 would be 20 to 25 years old and has already left home. I wonder wht his name was. This Census states William Baker was born in TN. I know some of the Baker reserchers state "John Baker was in Tennessee for awhile."

The names William & Elizabeth give their children are names we find in our John Baker & Aaron Baker Families except Thomas B. I check my 1830 Census MO Cape Girardeau Co page 466 John Baker was #3, William Baker was #4. ..."

This seems to be a pretty good argument, so I will enter this family. William was born at Tennessee, USA, circa 1805. He is listed as William Aaron Baker in Long GEDCOM. The birthplace and date, 1808 KY, come from this evidence alone. But this appears to be Aaron's data..7,5,6 William was listed as the head of a family on the on 1 June 1850 Census at Cape Girardeau, Missouri, USA.8 William died. Long GEDCOM gives 1894, Carroll Co, AR but we have no other corroboration and this appears to be brother Aaron's data..7

?ROBERT SAUNDERS Tentative. NB. The problem here is proving that this Robert is father of our James Sr. The logic proceeds as follows: As shown below, John is clearly Robert's son. Then it is argued that John and James Sr must be brothers (see arguments in Text for John).

The Robert Saunders Family Group Sheet by Teresa Wilson Wiese cites the following:

"OTHER SPELLINGS OF NAME: Sanders

"SOURCES FOR PARENTAGE: Robert was the son of John and Sarah Saunders as proven by the two 1766 deeds (f), and will of his father (e)

"SOURCES FOR BIRTH AND DEATH: Date of birth is an estimate. Date of death is believed to be shortly after the 1766 deeds (a), though this is not known for certain. No other mention of Robert has been found after 1766. [Mrs. King believes he may have been living with his son John in Halifax Co. at the time of the above deeds (a)]

"SOURCES FOR MARRIAGE: Miss Spratley is believed to be his wife per the will of a John Spratley that mentions his granddaughter, Mary Saunders, Daughter of Robert Saunders. (See source (c))

...

"PLACES OF RESIDENCE: Robert was probably born in York Co. since his father was there in 1677. Robert was still in York in 1711 and referred to as "Mr. Robert Saunders of Williamsburg", York Co, Virginia in his father-in-law's will in 1728. The two deeds in 1766 imply he was in Halifax Co. Virginia at that time. (see below)

"NOTES: From "William and Mary College Quarterly XIV" p147, "5. ROBERT SAUNDERS, (John1), lived in Williamsburg, and probably married Miss Spratley, for in his will dated April 28, 1728, John Spratley, of Surry refers of "his granddaughter Mary Saunders, daughter of Mr. Robert Saunders, of Williamsburg." He had issue: 39 John Saunders.

"WILL: No actual will has been found although the two deeds in 1766 probably were intended for the same purpose.

24 Feb 1700 - York Co, VA - Will proved (b)(c)

NOTES:
According to EARLY SETTLERS OF ALABAMA by Co. J.E. Saunders, this John was the son of Edward. Note the following from EARLY SETTLERS...:

"John Saunders, planter (1677) of Hampton Pa., York county, Constable in 1677 (succeeding William Wade). Surveyor of highways, with Henry Lee and John Cosby, 1682; patented land in Goochland, 1690; progenitor of the Hyde-Saunders and Williamsburg-Saunders line; (will proved 1700; large estate). Married Sarah, daughter of Peter Hargreave, who died 1684, and his estate divided (1685) by Robert Booth, Wm. Clopton and John Mihill (prominent men of York) between John Saunders (the administrator) and Robert Roberts, who married Mary, the other daughter of Peter Hargreave. Robert Roberts d.105 (his son, Robert Roberts, was sheriff, 1712. --Records) Children mentioned in above will (1700):
Christable, "now wife of Samuel Waddem"--John, Edward, Robert, George, Hargreave, Peter, Sarah, and Susannah Saunders.
Of these, John and Edward Saunders made a deed (1707) to William Barber, gent, which John's wife Mary, also signed: George and Robert Saunders "acknowledged" a debt (1711) to William Timson, who was a large merchant; and Hargreave Saunders (with guardian Henry Atkinson) was not of age in 1712. (Records) The son John Saunders, married (before 1707) Mary, daughter of Robert Hyde (d.1718)...."

The follinw is from WILLIAM AND MARY COLLEGE QUARTERLY. HISTORICAL MAGAZINE. VOL.XIV p.145:

"JOHN SAUNDERS lived in York Co., Virginia, and his will was proved Feb. 24, 1700. It disposes of a large estate in money, slaves, and land. issue named in the will 2Christabel, wife of Samuel Waddow; 3John; 4Edward; 5 Robert; 6George; 7Hargrave; 8Peter; 9Sarah; 10 Susannah. There is a deed recorded in Yorktown from John and Edward Saunders, in 1707, disposing of land to William Barber, "inherited from their mother, Mary Risle, daughter of John Risle," but reserving "the burial place of their mother and father, forty feet square." It is probable that the other children were by a second wife, a daughter of Peter Hargrave."
