Father(?) WHITAKER
Mary was born. She In all of the evidence letters she is referred to only as "Aunt Mary". This assignment of surname is suspect. There is a chance, that she is a Hargreaves - ie sister of father Richard Hargreaves rather than of mother Bridget Whitaker. There is even the possibility that she is a sister of Susannah Blomley's mother, although this seems to stretch the definition of aunt.

My assignment of Mary to the Whitakers is based on the flimsy evidence that she is referred to by the letter writer James just after he refers to Uncle James, who is definitely a Whitaker. The letter writer tends, I believe, to list kin in successive sentences.

The letter of 24 Jun 1852 says, "Aunt Mary is very cant at her age and was glad to hear from you. I only saw William her Son as the others were ....... home at the time I called." So Mary has at least a son William.

The letter of 24 Jun 1854 says, "Aunt Mary is Mary is very gaunt & Cousins on her side are all well. Mary is almost worried with children. I have to tell you that Cousin Bridget ..." Then he mentions in succession Eunice and "Cousin Jimmy". This is evidence, possibly, that Aunt Mary is a Whitaker, because Bridget, Eunice, and Cousin Jimmy are (children of Uncle James Whitaker). Mary (see below) is another of Aunt Mary's children.

The letter of 8 Jul 1855 says, "My Aunt Mary is yet living and is as well as one could expect. Elly, William, Mary & Jimmy & Anthony are near her at Lowerhouse they are all married I believe and steady." Again, using the author's tendency to list kin in adjacent lines, I take this as evidence, coupled with the references to William and Mary above, that these are Aunt Mary's children. Mary died in February 1861 at Lancashire, England.3

There is even the possibility that she is a sister of Susannah Blomley's mother, although this seems to stretch the definition of aunt.

My assignment of Ann to the Whitakers is based on the flimsy evidence that she is referred to by the letter writer James just after he refers to Uncle James, who is definitely a Whitaker. The letter writer tends, I believe, to list kin in successive sentences.

The letter of 24 Feb 1845 says, "My cousins wish to be remembered in my letters to you & my Uncle James at Greem in particular. I have sent them a copy of the letter I received last December and they always wish to know something about you. My Aunts and Cousins are well and wish to be remembered in my letter but particularly Cousins of my Aunt Ann's family. They are always very particular in their inquires about you. I have wrote to Bury to inform them of what has happened in our Family." So this is the only evidence I have that Aunt Ann and Uncle James might share surnames: the fact that they are in succeeding sentences. The reference to Bury is contrary evidence, however, because it is the Blomleys who apparently live in Bury.

The letter says, "I have seen Ruth Smith & have had correspondences with her, but she keeps wavering [about whether to go to Australia]" I surmise that she is kin and hence perhaps one of Thomas and Sarah Smith's six children.
