    for The Napanee Beaver

"Adolphustown native, was war hero and inventor.

NAPANEE - In Episode 5 of "Canada, A People's History," on CBC television, there was a reference to Henry Ruttan's memories of the Battle of Lundy's Lane, during the War of 1812.
Henry Ruttan was wounded at Lundy's Lane in July 1814 and later recalled, "I had but just taken my place in line, when I was shot through the right shoulder. I scarcely felt the shock, but was conscious that something unusual was the matter, as I was involuntarily brought upon both feet - we were all on one knee - and turned right around."

Donald Graves wrote in his 1999 book, Where Right and Glory Lead, that Lieut. Ruttan was fortunate to receive quick medical attention. The wounded were sent to Kingston by bateaux to recover. Ruttan healed well enough to return to active service, rejoining his regiment at York in late December.

In his book Graves refers to Ruttan as a "native of Northumberland County, Upper Canada." In fact, Henry Ruttan was born on his parent's farm, lot 18 of the first concession (Bay Shore Rd.), Adolphustown Township, on the 12th of June 1792.

Ruttan recounted in 1861 that "there were no schools" in Adolphustown and "what knowledge I acquired, was from my Mother, who would of an Evening narrate events of the American Rebellion and the happy lives people once led under the British laws and protection, previous to the outbreak."

After a serious childhood accident, tapping for sugar, left him without two fingers William and Margaret Ruttan must have wondered about the future of their son, Henry. Both parents died in the early 1840's and lived to see many of Henry's public successes.

In March 1815, Henry Ruttan had received his land grant, as a Loyalist son, near Grafton, in Haldimand Township, Northumberland County. He was not long in establishing himself and became a Member of the Legislative Assembly in 1821 - a post he would hold until 1827 and again from 1836 to 1841. In 1837, the year of the Upper Canada Rebellion, Ruttan was elected Speaker of the Legislature.

In 1827 Ruttan was appointed Sherriff, District of Newcastle (current counties of Northumberland and Durham), a post he would hold for thirty years.

With Ruttan's command of the 9th Military District of Upper Canada came the rank of Colonel.

One of Ruttan's greatest achievements was his invention of a ventilating system. The Ruttan ventilating system became widely used in institutional buildings throughout the U.S. and Canada. His 1862 book, "Ventilating and Warming of Buildings," is now found listed in antique book catalogues.

Col. Ruttan's obituary in the Cobourg Star, following his death on July 31, 1871, states that he had "left a name of which his children and relatives may be justly proud." "
