     John Durand [Du428] Durand Family, 151:

"John Durand followed a career in railroading, starting in the Hartford and New Haven Railroad as a young man. Later, he was with the Cleveland and Pittsburgh Railroad of which his father-in-law was the first president. In 1865 he took charge of the Pan Handle Railroad, and in 1872 he became connected with the Houston and Texas Railroad. After retiring, he lived in Rochester, N.Y., where he was a banker and financier." John was born at Cheshire, New Haven, Connecticut, USA, on 3 June 1819.² He married Martha Boyd Stewart on 3 October 1856.³ John died on 24 November 1891 at Avalon, Allegheny, Pennsylvania, USA, at age 72.³

     John Stewart Durand [Du779] Durand Family, 216:

"John S. Durand was educated at the Wilson school in Rochester, N.Y. and at the Hopkins Grammar School in New Haven prior to entering Yale University. He graduated from Yale in 1881, and from the Columbia University Law School in 1883. He was admitted to the Bar in New Yrok City, and with Mason W. Tyler formed the firm of Tyler and Durand with offices at 146 Broadway. This partnership lasted until 1903, when Mr. Tyler died.

John S. Durnad practiced alone from 1903 to 1919, specializing in surrogate's practice and corporation law. John Bowen, who had been with him many years, became a partner in 1919, and Walter S. Byrne and Harry F. Byrne became partners in 1922.

John S. Durnad authored several articles on medical jurisprudence in which he was an authority. He was a director for many years of the New York Transfer Co., the Ginnel Manufacturing Co., the Metals Chemical Co., Ltd. of Canada, and the Harmil Corporation. He was a member of several societies, such as the American Historical Association and the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society, and he was a member of the Union League, Universiyt, Yale, and Columbia Clubs. He was a Mason and member of Kane Lodge, and he was a member of All Angels' Episcopal Church. His home, for more than 30 years, was at 124 West 79 Street in New York City, and he spent his summers at Belgrade Lakes, Maine." John was born at Cincinnati, Hamilton, Ohio, USA, on 30 October 1859.² He married Emma Louise Weber at New York City, New York, New York, USA, on 16 April 1887.¹ John died on 19 May 1923 at New York City, New York, New York, USA, at age 63.¹

     Harry Stewart Durand [Du1022] Durand Family, 248:

"Harry S. Durand graduated from Yale University in 1913. During the 1st World War, he served as an ensign in the U.S. Navy. He was a financier associated with Mackay & Company, 14 Wall Street, New York City. He was an active yachtsman and horseman."

He died of a heart attack while fighting a brush fire on his country estate at Harrison, NY.

"Gene [McClure] ... was officiating at the Mid-Amateur Championship. The tournament was being held at The Stanwich Club which was the summer estate of Edwin Holmes who was my great grandfather. The estate was called Semloh Farm, which is Holmes spelled backwards. My grandmother, Mildred Holmes, grew up here and eventually married Harry Durand."

"Harry Durand's wife, Mildred Holmes (my grandmother), was daughter of Edwin T. Holmes and granddaughter of Edwin Holmes, a co-founder of the Bell Telephone Company with Alexander Graham Bell. Edwin Holmes, and his son Edwin T., invented the telephone switchhook, but never patented it. Edwin once controlled some 90+% of all the telephone wires in the United States. I have a copy of the book he wrote describing his career and involvement with what eventually became AT&T."
