Thomas? Darling1

M, d. before 17 December 1713
Thomas? was born. He This man may not even be named Thomas. I am using the following theory:

The Luther and Martha (Bebout) Jones family had a penchant for naming their children after their ancestors:

Thomas? Darling
Sarah Darling m Peter Bebout
Martha Bebout m Luther Jones
Thomas Darling Jones m Hetty High
Martha Bebout Jones
Peter Bebout Jones

Of course, Thomas Darling Jones could be named for Sarah's brother too or for some other Thomas Darling altogether.

The following may or may not refer to the current Thomas Darling:

Hatfield's The History of Elizabeth, New Jersey, p 255:

"THOMAS DARLING was admitted one of the Associates in 1699-1700, and drew No. 150 of the 100-acre lots, near the Rahway river and N. E. of it, between Joseph Woodruff and Hurr Thompson. A Thomas Darling was at Salem, Mass., in 1690; George, at Lynn, 1650; and John Darling, who married Eliza, daughter of James Beers, was one of the early settlers of Fairfield, Ct."

The original document appears on p 244:

"In the Yeare of our Lord one thousand Six Hundred and Ninty-Nine, At a Town-Meeting (in Elizabeth Town) of the s^d Associates and those Holding under them or Some of them were admitted as Associates with them in the affores^d Premisses, all those Persons whose Names are hereinafter next mentioned (viz.) ... and to first Lot-Rights ... Thomas Darling ..."

Assuming he was admitted to being an Associate when he reached 21, places his birth at c1678, and his death at less than about 34.
He married [Widow Darling = PARROTT WIFE 2] (?).2 Thomas? Darling Inventory made on estate of Thomas Darling; his widow Mary granted administration on 8 Jan 1697/8 on 28 December 1697 at Elizabethtown, Essex, New Jersey, USA.3 Thomas? died before 17 December 1713.4

Jemima was born. She Problem here: Littell says she married Stephen Day; Wheeler says Stephen Day Jr.

Ogden Family, 96:

"140. JEMIMA OGDEN (John46, David9, David3, John1), b. _____; d. _____; 1st m. STEPHEN JOHNSON; 2d m. STEPHEN DAY, JR.

(Stephen Day, Jr., had 1st m. Polly Bonnell, dau. of Benjamin Bonnell.)

CHILDREN - First Marriage ...:

419. Jonathan Johnson, b. ____; d. ____.
420. Hannah Johnson, b. ____; d. _____.

CHILDREN - Second Marriage ...:

421. Elijah Day, b. _____; d. _____; m. Phebe Crane.
422. Electa Day, b. _____; d. infant.
423. David Ogden Day, b. _____; d. _____; m. Maria Stackhouse; dau. of Samuel Stackhouse, of Elizabethtown, N. J.."

Here's the comparable from Littell's First Settlers, 115:

"5. Stephen [Day] married, 1st, Damaris Foster; 2d, Jemima, widow of Stephen Johnson, and daughter of Justice John Ogden, of Newark, and sister of Hannah, the wife of the Rev. James Cauldwell."

121:

"8. Stephen, Jun., married Polly Bonnel, daughter of Benjamin, Esq, sister of Nancy's husband. [Note the lack of a paragraph here, which is typical of Littell.] By his 2d wife, Jemima, Stephen Day, Esq., [ie, Stephen Day Sr] had children:

9. Elijah, 2d, married Phebe Crane, daughter of John Crane, of Orange, and had a daughter Adaline, who married Charles Alling, of Newark, and had a child, and soon after died, and the child died.

10. Electa, who died in infancy.

11. David Ogden married Maria Stackhouse, daughter of Samuel, of Elizabethtown."

123:

"NOTE - Jemima, the 2d wife of Stephen Day, Esq., had by her 2st husband, Stephen Johnson, two children:

1. Jonathan Johnson, who married Abigail Bonnel, daughter of Benjamin Bonnel, Esq.
2. Hannah Johnson, who is unmarried. She lives with David O. Day, and is nearly 80 years old."

So these are nearly the same except for Stephen Day Jr v Stephen Day Sr.

I am going to hazard a guess here: The lack of a paragraph in item 8, p 121, Littell, could easily cause one to misread that the "his" in "his 2d wife" referred to Stephen Day, Jr, rather than the correct reading of Stephen Day, Esq (ie Sr). If the Ogden compilers (1907) used Littell (1852) for reference, they might have made this mistake. I will assume so until further evidence surfaces.

Hannah Ogden [Og142] Hannah Cauldwell was killed by the British in a famous death of the Revolution. It is depicted on the official seal of Union County NJ (see http://www.unioncountynj.org). Here is the account from The Ogden Family, 97:

"... His [Rev James Caldwell's] house at Elizabethtown was burned by the Hessians and Tories who tried to capture him, but he moved his family away, and as often as possible returned to preach to his people. On one occasion he preached with loaded pistols lying on his pulpit, while sentinels watched outside.

Despite the fact that his wife was cruelly shot and killed by a British soldier at Connecticut Farms, June 25, 1780, "Mr. Caldwell continued in the discharge of the various duties ot which, in these several capacities, he was called, month by month, until the autumn of 1781. ... 'The Rev^d James Caldwell departed this life, falling by the hands of a Cruel Murderer, on the 24th of November, 1781.'

...

A marble slab was placed over the graves of Rev. Caldwell and his wife in the FIrst Pres. ch. yd., Elizabeth ..." Hannah was born in 1737.2 She married Rev James Cauldwell on 14 March 1763.2 Hannah died on 25 June 1780 at Connecticut Farms, Union, New Jersey, USA.1
