"My father was born in Philadelphia in 1909, the son of William Gorham, and Dessa Durand. Dessa was from Peru, Indiana. She had three sisters who all left home when they were young, and went on the stage. Dessa stayed home for 20 years, leaving only after the death of her invalid mother, whereupon she went to Boston and met and married William Gorham. William came from a family which included both a Mayflower passenger and a signer of the American Constitution among its ancestors. By the mid-nineteenth century, however, this branch of the Gorham family had come down in the world. Charles's grandfather, Charles Edward Gorham, lived and worked for most of his life as an artisan in St Johnsbury, Vermont. As a boy, he had fought on the Union side in the Civil War. Charles Edward appears to have been proud, in a straightforward way, of his own military service and of his illustrious forbears. For his son William and his grandson Charles, this military and patriotic family history retained an important role in their interior lives and in their self-definitions of themsleves as masculine men.

William left rural Vermont for Boston, where he attended art school and went on to work as a newspaper illustrator in Boston, Philadelphia and finally in New York City, where the family settled permanently in 1917.

Charles was the eldest of three boys. Though outwardly they were a normal 'All American' middle-class family, for Charles the circumstances of his childhood appear to have been extremely damaging. He himself laid his childhood and adolescent problems at his mother's door: writing in 1943, a year after her death, he says: .... It was during the Depression that he became a socialist. He and my mother met in 1935 or 1936 when they were both working for the Works Project Administration's Writers' Project.

My mother, Ethel Ruth Bloom, was the daughter of immigrant Eastern European Jews who settled in Rochester, an upstate New York town with a substantial Jewish community. Both my grandfather, William Bloom, and my grandmother, Sarah Bernstein Bloom, were radicals. ...

My parents ...were married in 1938. ..."

Footnote 14 adds that this occurred in NJ. She married William Gorham at Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts, USA, before 1909.¹ Dessa died in 1942.¹

     Edna was born at Peru, Miami, Indiana, USA, on 8 January 1883.^1,2 She married Earl Lee Huntington at Omaha, Douglas, Nebraska, USA, on 2 January 1908.²

     Demas? (Daniel?) Durand (Du386) The first name is difficult to read on the U.S. Census, 1840, Branch Co., Michigan, roll 302, p. 73. Demas? was born at Michigan, USA, circa 1840.²

     Elizabeth was born. She married Zebulon Riggs [Ri54][Wa28].^1,2

     Nancy was born in 1856.¹ Nancy died in 1892.¹

     Martha was born.

     Bethuel Shaw Donna Syret's Shaw site says that the 1850 census shows Bethuel b 1842 to James Shaw Jr. Since Bethuel Shaw (Sr) died about then, perhaps he (Jr) was named in honor.

Her note:

"Bethuel's brother mentioned in his will [of Oct 1842] was James Shaw Jr. On the 1850 Census, a son of James Shaw Jr is shown as Bethuee, born in 1842, the same year as Bethuel's death."

I read this census as Bethuel b ca 1845 MO however. If the elder Bethuel died in 1844 as Maureen Webb says, then the namesake theory still holds. Bethuel was born at Missouri, USA, circa 1845.^2,3

     Sarah J Shaw See father's text for census details. Since she is 17 when her father's wife is 27, he must have been married before. Or she is a relative and not a daughter. Sarah was born circa 1833.^2,1
