"Parrot, Martha Mar.13,1838-July 16,1879"

I am making a leap that this Martha is the child Martha of Squire and Martha (Townley) Parrott. Her name is listed, in the evidence above, next to those of Martha, wife of Squire, and Squire. Her birthdate is appropriately after Abraham's (she is 11th child and he is 3rd). There is no evidence (yet) that she ever married.

"Parrot, Martha, 5732N. W. 1879. Inv. 1879" [p 5732 Morris Co, Will 1879, Inventory 1879]. Martha was born on 13 March 1838.¹ She was the daughter of Squier Parrott and Martha Townley. She made a will at Morris, New Jersey, USA, in 1879.² Martha died on 16 July 1879 at New Jersey, USA, at age 41.¹ Her body was interred at New Providence, Essex, New Jersey, USA, at Methodist Burying Ground.¹

     Mary Parrott (1) First Settlers, p 313: "Mary, who died at 13 years of age"

"Parrot, Squire ... dau Mary (dau of Squier and Martha), d Aug. 9, 1830, aged 13-2-5." Mary was born on 4 June 1817.² She was the daughter of Squier Parrott and Martha Townley. Mary died on 9 August 1830 at New Jersey, USA, at age 13.² Her body was interred at New Providence, Essex, New Jersey, USA.²

     George was born. He Founders of New Providence, p 47: "William Parrott came to New Providence before the Revolution, and settled on a large tract of land at what is now Gillette but was then reckoned tributary to New Providence. His grandson, Squier Parrott, married Martha Townley, and had a son, George Townley Parrott, who was long well known and highly esteemed as Surrogate of Union County. Another member of the family conducted for many years a mill on the Passaic at Chatham, known through all the region as Parrott's Mill." He was the son of Squier Parrott and Martha Townley.

     Catharine was born. She was the daughter of Squier Parrott and Martha Townley. She married Augustus A Boyle.^1,2

"Parrot, Squire ... son William [father here spelled "Squier"], d Mar. 4, 1830, aged 0-9-24." William was born on 11 May 1829.² He was the son of Squier Parrott and Martha Townley. William died on 4 March 1830 at New Jersey, USA.² His body was interred at New Providence, Essex, New Jersey, USA.²

     Abigail was born.² She First Settlers, p 91:

"Alexander [Cooper] married, 31st December, 1849, Abby Parrot daughter of Squier Parrot." She was the daughter of Squier Parrott and Martha Townley. She married Alexander Cooper on 31 December 1849.³

     Margaret H Parrott Gravestones, Methodist Burying Ground, New Providence NJ:

"Parrot, Margaret, dau. of Squire and Martha Townley, wife of Benjamin Kelly Apr. 10, 1825 - June 8, 1911." Margaret was born on 10 April 1825.¹ She was the daughter of Squier Parrott and Martha Townley. She married Rev Benjamin Kelly.^1,3,4 Her body was interred at New Providence, Essex, New Jersey, USA, at Methodist Burying Ground.¹ Margaret died on 18 June 1911 at New Jersey, USA, at age 86. A second reading, apparently more carefully done than Gravestones, gives her death as 18 Jun. Gravestones gives 8 Jun.¹

     Caroline Parrott Founders:

"Daniel W. [Day], who married Caroline Parrott, daughter of Squier Parrott, and was for many years a leading citizen of Summit." Caroline was born. She was the daughter of Squier Parrott and Martha Townley. As of 17 November 1847,her married name was Day.^2,3,4,1,5,6 She married Daniel W Day on 17 November 1847.^2,3,4,1,5,6

Dale Parrott sent me what appears to be a photocopy of an annotated document by George Townley Parrott. The original was typewritten but there are penciled additions. On the second page is a list of the children of Abraham Parrott and Sarah Ann Burrows. The list begins:

"1. George Townley (myself) born Dec. 17, 1856."

Now, the 5 in 1856 is blurred but it is definitely a 5. However, it might have been typed over (hence the blur) with a 4. The blur is consistent with both a 4 and a 5. Abraham was born on 25 January 1821.^1,4 He was the son of Squier Parrott and Martha Townley. He married Sarah Ann (Anne) Burrows on 22 December 1845.^2,4,5,6 Abraham died on 6 July 1890 at New Jersey, USA, at age 69.¹ His body was interred at New Providence, Essex, New Jersey, USA, at Methodist Burying Ground.¹

     Elizabeth was born.¹ She was the daughter of Squier Parrott and Martha Townley. As of 25 May 1838,her married name was Frazee.^2,1,3,4 She married Vincent L. Frazee on 25 May 1838.^2,1,3,4

     Mary was born. He was the son of Squier Parrott and Martha Townley. He married John Williams.^1,2

     He married Abigail "Abby" Parrott on 31 December 1849.¹

     Daniel W Day is the son of Capt, Rev Stephen Day and Elizabeth A "Betsey" Wood. He married Caroline Parrott on 17 November 1847.^1,2,3,4,5,6

     Sarah Ann (Anne) Burrows Gravestones, Methodist Burying Ground, New Providence NJ:

"Parrot, Sarah Ann, wife of Abraham, dau. of Rev. Waters Burrows Sept. 16, 1822 - Dec. 26, 1869." Sarah was born on 16 September 1822.^3,4 She was the daughter of Rev Waters Burrows Jr and Margaret Williston Wood. She married Abraham (Abram) Parrott on 22 December 1845.^5,2,6,7 As of 22 December 1845,her married name was Parrott.^5,2,6,7 Sarah died on 26 December 1869 at New Jersey, USA, at age 47.³ Her body was interred at New Providence, Essex, New Jersey, USA, at Methodist Burying Ground.³

     He married Elizabeth Parrott on 25 May 1838.^2,3,4,5

     George Townley Parrott See his father's text for evidence that he submitted historical data about his family 17 Feb 1890 - in particular, Revolutionary War data.

In fact, I believe I have a copy of this data - see the George Townley Parrott manuscript.

Another document submitted by George T Parrot, 1911 is entitled "Copies and extracts of the old records of the Presbyterian Church at Turkey (now New Providence, Union County, New Jersey), microfiche at Morristown Public Library. A cover letter is signed Geo Parrot, Elizabeth, NJ 23 May 1911.³ George was born on 17 December 1846.^4,5 He was the son of Abraham (Abram) Parrott and Sarah Ann (Anne) Burrows. George was a New Jersey Historical Society member at Elizabethtown, Essex, New Jersey, USA, on 6 February 1902.⁶ He resided at Elizabeth, Union, New Jersey, USA, on 23 May 1911.²

     Mary Francis Parrott is the daughter of Abraham (Abram) Parrott and Sarah Ann (Anne) Burrows.

     He married Glenda Ross at Newport, Newport, Rhode Island, USA, on 18 March 1965.

     William Frazee is the son of Elizabeth Parrott.

     Rosetta Frazee is the daughter of Elizabeth Parrott.

     Isabel Frazee is the daughter of Elizabeth Parrott.

     Mary Ellen Frazee is the daughter of Elizabeth Parrott.

     Abraham Parrott See the obituary for son Abraham Clark Parrott.

First Settlers gives wife's name as Margaret Birdsal.

Theory: Since the name of Abraham Parrott is Abraham Clark Parrott, it is quite possible that the father's name is Abraham Clark Parrott too. (Notice too that Abraham's brother Simeon Parrott has a son Clark Parrott.) It is possible then that he was named for Elizabethtown Associate Abraham Clark, who signed the Declaration of Independence - hence Abraham Clark the Signer. Notice that Abraham the Signer was a contemporary of Abraham Parrott's great grandparents, also of Elizabethtown. WILLIAM and ABIGAIL (SHIPMAN) PARROTT. Further note that ABIGAIL SHIPMAN's first husband was Daniel Clark of Elizabethtown. I do not know of the connection, if any, between Daniel Clark and Abraham Clark the Signer, however, so this is strictly a theory. Of course, our Abraham could simply have been named for a local celebrity, with no genetic connection. Nevertheless, I include here a brief genealogy of Abraham Clark the Signer, gleaned from Hatfield's History of Elizabeth NJ (NB, ET= Elizabethtown below):

The Glen Sanger evidence adds:

"Abraham Parrott was a School Master. He died just before Abraham Clark Parrott (the Grand Father of Glen Sanger) was born." Abraham was born at New Jersey, USA, on 22 January 1810.^3,4 He was the son of WILLIAM PARROTT and ELIZABETH "Betsey" HAND. He married Margaret Burchard at Gurnsey, Ohio, USA, on 9 November 1837.^5,1,6 Abraham Parrott appeared on the census of 1840 at Monroe Twp, Guernsey, Ohio, USA; 1M 20-30, child consistent with dau Elizabeth Ann b 1839; father in same county.⁷ Abraham died on 2 May 1853 at Athens, Athens, Ohio, USA, at age 43.³

     SYLVESTER PARROTT Arleen Sifleet notes say he is buried in Coolville, Athens Co, Ohio, but an email from Dale Parrott to me on 21 Jan 1998 says, "I have visited the graves of Sylvester and Henrietta Parrott in Alvarado Indiana, as well as some of their children's graves in Metz and Angola." He has, in fact, sent a photo of their gravestones there.

Headstone engraved: "S. Parrott, Died Jan 16, 1855, E. ?Y 4M 5D" The tombstone calculator computes from this the birthday of 11 Sep 18??. So the year must be 43Y to be consistent with 11 Sep 1811 birthdate (if that year is indeed correct).

Note that this makes his birthday 11 Sep 1811 and NJ his birthplace. SYLVESTER was born at New Jersey, USA, on 11 September 1811.^7,8,9 He was the son of WILLIAM PARROTT and ELIZABETH "Betsey" HAND. He married HENRIETTA OGDEN [Og2206] at Richland, Ohio, USA, on 17 March 1836.^10,11,4,5 SYLVESTER was listed as the head of a family on the in 1840 Census at Springfield Twp, Richland, Ohio, USA.¹² He moved after 1844 at Steuben, Indiana, USA.¹³ SYLVESTER was listed as the head of a family on the in 1850 Census at Crawford, Ohio, USA.¹⁴ SYLVESTER died on 16 January 1855 at Alvarado, Steuben, Indiana, USA, at age 43.^15,16 His body was interred at Alvarado, Steuben, Indiana, USA, at Alvarado Cemetery.³

     Abigail Parrott Arlien Sifleet's notes give her husband as Daniel Hoffman, and so does First Settlers, but this is inconsistent with the Dale Parrott evidence that she married D T Goodrich.

The Dale Parrott evidence (see some of it below) gives this: Daniel and Abigail had 5 boys and 5 girls, a girl and a boy dying in infancy.

Abigail Parrott was born in Morris county, New Jersey, Nov. 15, 1813, and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. W. Goodale, July 31, 1899, aged 85 years, 8 months and 14 days. In 1817 she moved with her parents to Washington county, Penn., where in 1831 she was married to D. T. Goodrich. ...

The Steuben Republican, October 28, 1885, p. 1. obituary is further evidence for Daniel. Abigail was born at Morris, New Jersey, USA, on 15 November 1813.² She was the daughter of WILLIAM PARROTT and ELIZABETH "Betsey" HAND. She married Daniel T Goodrich in 1831.² Abigail died on 31 July 1899 at Steuben, Indiana, USA, at age 85.² Her body was interred on 2 August 1899 at Metz, Steuben, Indiana, USA.²

     Electa Parrott First Settlers of Passaic Valley has her name as Electa and husband's name completely unknown.

Her husband is listed as ? Sumner from Bridgewater, Ohio in Arleen Sifleet notes. But the Thomas email evidence discounts this and give Nathan Huffman as her husband.

Electa was born at New Jersey, USA, in 1816.^5,6 She was the daughter of WILLIAM PARROTT and ELIZABETH "Betsey" HAND. She married Nathan Huffman at Richland, Ohio, USA, on 21 November 1834.^7,8 Electa died circa 1858 at Crestline, Crawford, Ohio, USA. Death computed from 1813 + 45y.⁹ Her body was interred at Crawford, Ohio, USA, at Talbet Cemetery.^1,10

     Thomas Parrott Although this doesn't quite say so, surely Thomas is their son:

A census listed Thomas as head of household at Hanover Twp, Richland, Ohio, USA, in 1840.³ He married Margaret _ before 1848.² Thomas Parrott appeared on the census of 1860 at Coolville, Athens, Ohio, USA.⁴ He bought property at Athens, Ohio, USA, on 7 June 1862.⁵

     Her married name was Marlow.^1,2 She married Jonah [James] Marlow.^1,2 Anne was born at [West] Virginia, USA, circa 1819.^3,4,5 She was the daughter of WILLIAM PARROTT and ELIZABETH "Betsey" HAND.

     Simeon S Parrott From Dale Parrott's website:

"Simeon Parrott Dead 1818 - 1904

Simeon Parrott, one of our most aged residents, died at his home, a short distance southwest of town, at 4 o'clock a. m. , on Tuesday of this week, aged 86 years. The funeral services will be held at his late residence this (Thursday) afternoon at 1:30 sun time, the interment to be made in River Cliff cemetery.
Mr. Parrott was well known and highly respected citizen and his death is mourned by the entire community. His life was one of rare activity and his long career one of usefulness. He retained his vigor until a ripe old age and has left behind him a glowing record of his achievements. For some time he has been in poor health, but he met sickness with the same brave spirit with which he met all life's battles and made a gallant fight against death. The aged gentleman's esteemed wife, after a union of over fifty years preceded him to the better land but a few years ago.

Mellville Parrott ... is a son of Simeon S. and Mary Hiddleson Parrott, the former of whom was a native of Washington county, Pennsylvania, and the latter of whom claimed Morrow county, Ohio, as the place of her birth. Both were born in the year 1818, and the father came to Morrow county, Ohio, in the year 1837, settling on a farm near Mount Gilead. Mrs. Parrott came to this county with her parents, as a young girl, and her marriage was solemnized in September, 1840. To this union were born the following children: Nelson, Clark, Mellville, Louise and Dora. Nelson and Clark are both deceased; Mellville is the immediate subject of this review; Louise is the wife of N. N. Hiskett, and resides in Morrow county; and Dora married I. M. Lautz, of Vinton county. Simeon S. Parrott died in 1904 and his cherished wife was sumoned to eternal rest in 1901.

Mellville Parrott was reared ot the sturdy discipline of the home farm which was situated one mile southeast of Mount Gilead ..."

Simeon was born at Washington, Pennsylvania, USA, in 1818.¹ He was the son of WILLIAM PARROTT and ELIZABETH "Betsey" HAND. He moved in 1837 at Mount Gilead, Morrow, Ohio, USA.³ He married Mary Hiddleson at Morrow, Ohio, USA, in September 1840.⁴ Simeon died on 15 November 1904 at His home, Mount Gilead, Morrow, Ohio, USA.⁵ His body was interred on 17 November 1904 at Mount Gilead, Morrow, Ohio, USA, at River Cliff Cemetery.⁶

     Daniel was born at Ohio, USA. Daniel died. He was the son of WILLIAM PARROTT and ELIZABETH "Betsey" HAND. Daniel Parrott Arleen Sifleet notes, p21 (of my transcription) say ``lived in Chilhowie [?], Missouri, Johnson Co.''.

     He married Pauline Galloway.

     He married Anne Parrott.^1,2 Jonah was born at [West] Virginia, USA, circa 1818.³ He appeared on the census of 1850 at Wood, [West] Virginia, USA; Living with Anne's parents, William and Elizabeth Parrott.⁴

     Margaret Burchard Her last name is given as Birdsal in First Settlers of Passaic. My aunt Arleen Sifleet's notes had it as Birdsall. I am casting my vote for Burchard, given by a direct descendant, Glen Sanger. This is supported by the obituary for her son Abraham Clark Parrott on Dale Parrott's website.

Since Abraham died 1853 , I wonder if Margaret (Burchard) Parrott is this one and she married again. Margaret was born at Ohio, USA, circa 1814.² She married Abraham Parrott at Gurnsey, Ohio, USA, on 9 November 1837.^3,1,4 Margaret Burchard appeared on the census of 1860 at Coolville, Athens, Ohio, USA; A few doors from her former husband's parents and brother.⁵ Margaret died in January 1889 at Hall, Nebraska, USA.^6,7

     Lt JOHN MITCHELL PARROTT [Og3594] He is listed with his father and mother in the 1850 OH census, Crawford Co, Jackson Twp.

Named for his uncle Rev John Mitchell m Ann Ogden, HENRIETTA's sister.

From his obiturary (via Dale Parrott):

"John Mitchel Parrott, son of Sylvester and Henriettta Parrott, was born at Ontario, Richland County, Ohio, March 25, 1837.

In 1853 he moved to Steuben County, Ind., where he resided until August of 1861, when he enlisted in Company A, 44th Indiana Volunteers. He was attached to the Army of the West and participated in the battle of Shiloh and Fort Donaldson. After serving 1 year he was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant and transferred to the 74th Indiana.

On December 21, 1862, he was married to Mary Hortense Durand at Galion Ohio. After residing in Galion and Akron until 1867, he moved to a farm in Metz, In. In 1875 he moved with his family to Bryan, Ohio where he has since resided.

He leaves two daughters to mourn his loss: Mrs. Alice Sifleet of Berea, Ohio and Mrs. Jenny Niederaur of Bryan, Ohio. A son Edward Anson died in early childhood.

He passed away at the home of his daughter Mrs. Alice Sifleet at Berea Ohio, on February 14, 1919."

"David O. Parrott 1844 - 1925

David O. Parrott, son of Sylvester and Henrietta Parrott, was born at Crestline, Ohio, March 26, 1844, and died at the home of his son, Lee, in South Bend, December 17, 1925. When a small child his parents came to Stueben county, locating near Metz. Here he lived for a number of years, later moving with his family to a farm near Pleasant Lake.
In 1866 he was married to Mary Brandeberry, who preceded him in death nineteen years ago. To this union were born three children, Louella A. Cross, Clyde and Lewell E. Parrott. Clyde and Louella passed to the higher life some years ago. One son, two brothers and numerous other relatives survive who are richer because of their memories of him.
For many years, in connection with his farm life, he worked at the trade of carpenter. As a workman he was conscientious and painstaking. He was unassuming in his relation to his fellowmen, yet all recognized his integrity and kindliness of spirit. His life was not without its sorrows, but these he bravely and unflinchingly. Carrying his own cares easily, he was sympathetic and tender to those who were burdened. He met adversity with courage. His day of service for others ended suddenly when he suffered a serious accident. This prevented him from further activity in the affairs of life, but in his inactivity he was both cheery and content. For long years God had been his friend and the sunset of life found him certain of the "joy which cometh in th morning."

"Orson F. Parrott

      Orson F. Parrott, son of Sylvester and Henrietta Ogden Parrott was born Dec. 7, 1850, in Richland county near Crestline, Ohio, and died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Clarence Dally near Hamilton, Ind., on March 6 1935, at the age of 84 years two months and 26 days.
      He with his parents moved from Ohio to Steuben county, Ind., when a small boy. His parents died when he was very young. He was one of a family of eight, all having preceded him in death except one brother Henry, of Angola.
      On January 3, 1875, he was united in marriage to Mary E. Dally. to this union were born four children, Maggie A., wife of Doctor A. T. Ingalls, of Los Angeles, Cal., Ethel J., wife of Clarence F. Dally, of Otsego township, Carl O., of Jackson, Mich., and one son dying in infancy. He united with the Church of Christ at Metz in 1876.
      He was a very kind and loving husband and father and was of a very quiet disposition and had many friends.
      He is survived by his wife, two daughters, one son, seven
grandchildren and two great - grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
      Funeral services were held at the Metz Church of Christ on March 8 at 10:30 a. m., Elder J. O. Rose officiating. Internment at Metz cemetery."

Entire Family and Friends Join Celebration for Estimable Citizens on Sunday

During the past week in the home of Mr. & Mrs. Henry S. Parrott happiness has reigned supreme. To them has been given the blessed privilege their golden wedding anniversary and also Mrs. Parrott's birthday.
All of their children were present and all of the grandchildren except one, Robert Parrott; Mrs. Elizabeth Schiefer and her daughter Margaret came from their home in Galion, O. last Friday; Mr. and Mrs. W. S. Schiefer and daughter Miriam , of Syracuse, Ohio; Mr. and Mrs. Herbert C. Parrott and son Ted, of South Bend, also daughter Mildred of Ann Arbor, Mich., and Mr. and Mrs. Emmett Parrott and daughter Alice Marie, of St. Joseph, Mo. arrived Sat. Their youngest daughter, Prof. Alice, of Tri-State College, resides in the family home with her parents.
It was a happy reunion, the first in five years that Mr. and Mrs. Parrott have had their family together and once again on Saturday and Sunday the group gathered around the board in the family home in this city.
Sunday afternoon at a reception held in honor of the day, relatives, neighbors, and friends called to extend felicitations to the bride and groom of a half a century. Nieces and nephews came from near-by towns as well as from Angola, and Mrs. Parrott's Sunday school class called in a body. Mr. and Mrs. Parrott were recipients of a number of gifts, honoring them and the occasion. Dainty refreshments were served by the daughters and granddaughters.
On the 14th of Feb. 1881 Henry S. Parrott and Jennie Anspaugh came to Angola in company with their friends, Homer Robinson and Miss Jennie Lash, and , in a double wedding ceremony were married by the past of the Christian Church, Elder A. S. Hale. Both Mr. and Mrs. Robinson have past away.
Mr. and Mrs. Parrott spent the early years of their married lives and reared their family on their farm in Williams Co., Ohio, near Columbia. They became prominent citizens in that community and made many friends, still enjoying and extended acquaintance in their old neighborhood, which hold them in high esteem.
In 1921, Mr. and Mrs. Parrott, because of failing health, left the farm and and came to Angola, where they purchased the Mrs. Clara Burkhart residence on W. Maumee St. Here as in Williams, Co., they have made friends in the community and the Christian church, where they are devoted and consistent members.
We extend congratulations and best wishes to Mr. and Mrs. Parrott, and trust they may enjoy health and happiness for many years yet to come.

"I can tell you Henry Sylvester passed away in 1936. Grandma passed away in 1949. Grand pa passed away after an illness and was living with Alice Ann at the time. Grand ma stayed with Alice In Angola Indiana, till her death in 1949. (the year I graduated from high school.)

My sister Alice Marie Ross remembers Grand pa and how stern he was. She and Miriam Blazer got paddled for sliding down the banister at the house on Maume St in Angola. ... Ron Parrott."

Dale Parrot's Genealogy lists m 16 Feb 1881, but his obits and history page gives newspaper evidence that it was 14 Feb 1881..^3,2 Henry died in 1936 at Angola, Steuben, Indiana, USA. One piece of evidence gives death year as 1936.^8,9,10,11,5 His body was interred at Metz, Steuben, Indiana, USA, at Metz Cemetery.⁶

     Samuel Maxwell "He was a blacksmith at Alvarado. On account of failing eyesight he sold his shop in 1881 and bought a farm in Pleasant Township, near Crooked Lake. After three years he sold that place and on March 6, 1884, moved to a farm four miles southeast of Fremont, was there four years and then located on a farm one mile south of Alvarado in Richland Towhsnip, where he spent the rest of his days." Samuel was born at Wayne, Ohio, USA, on 12 December 1839.² He married Elizabeth J Parrott [Og3598] at Steuben, Indiana, USA, on 20 April 1865.^3,4,5 Samuel died on 2 November 1895 at his home, Edon, Williams, Ohio, USA, at age 55.^6,7 His body was interred on 4 November 1895 at Edon, Williams, Ohio, USA.⁸

     Dr Charles W Goodale The obituary used in evidence here was quoted in a letter from Dale Parrott to Alvy Ray Smith, 23 Jan 1998. Charles was born at York Township, Steuben, Indiana, USA, on 11 May 1844.² He was the son of Burdette B Goodale. He married Margaret Ann Parrott [Og3596] at Metz, Steuben, Indiana, USA, on 5 September 1869.^3,1,4 Charles died on 5 January 1905 at age 60.⁵ His body was interred on 7 January 1905 at Metz, Steuben, Indiana, USA, at Metz Cemetery.^1,6

     Mary was born. She was the daughter of John Brandeberry and Louisa Townsend. She married David Ogden Parrott [Og3595] on 23 April 1866.^2,3 Mary died circa 1906.⁴
