     Arthur was born. He Arlien Sifleet: "2 Arthur d. young." He was the son of Noah Ellen and Mary H ?-. Arthur died before 1880.¹

     Samuel A Ellen Arlien Sifleet's notes:

"3 Samuel m. Jesse - lived in [?]"

His death record says he was a merchant. Samuel was born at Ohio, USA, circa 1878.² He was the son of Noah Ellen and Mary H ?-. He married Jesse (?).¹ Samuel died on 4 November 1908 at Lorain, Lorain, Ohio, USA.²

     John Alexander Ellen Arlien Sifleet: "4 John Alex." John was born at Ohio, USA, in December 1883. He was the son of Noah Ellen and Mary H ?-.

     May [Mary] A C Ellen Arlien Sifleet: "5 May - m. Harry Langton, Cleveland." May was born at Ohio, USA, in December 1875. She was the daughter of Noah Ellen and Mary H ?-. Her married name was Langton.² She married Harry Langton at Cleveland, Cuyahoga, Ohio, USA.²

     He married May [Mary] A C Ellen at Cleveland, Cuyahoga, Ohio, USA.²

     She married Samuel A Ellen.¹

     Russell Ellen Arlien Sifleet's notes:

"s. Russell, died as child"

His death record shows that he died at 5 from drowning. Russell was born circa 1897.² He was the son of Samuel A Ellen. Russell died on 17 March 1902 at Residence, Lorain, Lorain, Ohio, USA.² His body was interred at Woodland.²

     WILLIAM PARROTT The following inscription is from notes obtained from Arlien Sifleet (Mrs Alexander Corwin Sifleet, deceased, formerly of 95 Fairmount Av, Chatham, NJ). The notes were sent to my mother EDITH SMITH (her niece) and then passed to me several years later. We do not know where this inscription is located nor who the great grandson is:

"In memory of Wm Parrot and Abigail his wife, son of Sam. Parrot of Elizabethtown. He was born there 9/19/1714 & was one of the 1st settlers in this locality. Lived near (now) Union Village where he d. 11/1784. It is believed he & his wife were buried in neighboring Pres. Church yard, with which church he was actively identified - erected 1911 by a great grandson."

This establishes ABIGAIL as WILLIAM PARROTT's wife and SAMUEL PARROTT as his father (if the inscription is valid).

Here are the records showing the close association of WILLIAM PARROTT and his family with the New Providence Presbyterian Church. These are the notes kept by Rev Jonathan Elmer, 1763-1793:

This establishes that WILLIAM PARROTT was in the New Providence area as early as 1757.

Fro Aunt Arlien's notes, p 5:

Wm Parrott - became member of Pres. Church, New Providence in 1769 & gave as his contribution toward Rev. Jonathan Elmer's pastorage - 2L-10s."

I suspect this is a renewal of membership, or an event marking some eventful change in the church, because he was clearly associated with the church as far back as 1757.

From First Settlers of Passaic Valley by Littell, p 312:

"WILLIAM PARROT lived where Ezra Wilcox now does, and owned 200 acres of land, including that now owned by Ezra Wilcox, Abraham Valentine and David A. French, extending from the River to the Stony Hill Road. It was divided between his sons William and Thomas. He married the widow of Daniel Clark, and had children:

1. William, Jun. who married Catherine Williams, daughter of John Williams, of Northfield, in Livingston Township, and sister of Zophar Williams.

2. Thomas, who married, 20th December 1786, Rosannah Rutan, daughter of Abraham Rutan; she died, and he married, 2d. September 9th, 1824, Abigail Meeker, daughter of Isaiah Meeker. He lived on Long Hill, and was a Justice of the Peace of Morris county. He died 21st September, 1840. His 2d wife died 1st July, 1846, aged 79 years.

3. Samuel, who married, 18th August, 1783, Polly Thompson, daughter of Thomas, of Long Hill. He with his family, removed to the Lakes, New York."

p 75 of First Settlers:

"DANIEL CLARK, by his 1st wife, had children .... Daniel Clark's 1st wife then died, and he married, 2d, Miss Shipman, and had other children: [listed are Stephanus, Jabez, Keturah, Deborah, and Abigail]" So this establishes the surname of WILLIAM PARROTT's wife as SHIPMAN. The inscription establishes her first name as ABIGAIL. There is no evidence that he had more than one wife.

p 191 of First Settlers:

"JACOB JENNINGS, who married Phebe Ball, daughter of Nathaniel Ball ... lived where William Parrot lately lived and died ...."

p 37 of First Settlers:

"Peter Bebout, married, 2d, Sarah Darling, half-sister of William Parrot, Sen., and had other children"

p 421 of First Settlers:

"THOMAS THOMPSON, ... and Abigail Ross ... had children: 1. Polly, who married Samuel Parrot, son of William, Sen."

From Hatfield's History of Elizabeth, p 571:

WILLIAM PARROTT is listed as one of the second round of settlers of New Providence [informally, Turkey] NJ, which essentially became a separate town, from Elizabeth, in 1794, institutionalized in 1809. The settlers, first and second rounds, all settled within the first 40 years, but it is not clear what the starting date for this 40 years is. My reading suggests that these settlers moved in during the 40 years from 1736 to 1776, or 1738 to 1778. From the Morristown records above, we know that WILLIAM arrived before 1752.
     
I am tentatively assigning the following children to WILLIAM. They are listed together in a single list in Arlien's notes, from a single church, Whippany Presbyterian Church, and the timing is right [a ? marks the tentative entries]:

"William Parrott came to New Providence before the Revolution, and settled on a large tract of land at what is now Gillette but was then reckoned tributary to New Providence. His grandson, Squier Parrott, married Martha Townley, and had a son, George Townley Parrott, who was long well known and highly esteemed as Surrogate of Union County. Another member of the family conducted for many years a mill on the Passaic at Chatham, known through all the region as Parrott's Mill."

He resided at Morris, New Jersey, USA, on 21 December 1752, This does not prove he lived in Morris Co but only that he was present at an inventory there, Morris Twp, to be specific, on this date..¹³ He married ABIGAIL [= Widow Clark] SHIPMAN after 21 April 1756.^5,12,14 He moved before May 1757 at New Providence, Essex, New Jersey, USA.^15,16 WILLIAM PARROTT lived on 9 February 1764 at Essex, New Jersey, USA; Executor of will of John Decamp; ABRAHAM RUTAN is a witness; John leaves money to "Society of Turky."¹⁷ He resided at New Providence, Essex, New Jersey, USA, in 1769.¹⁰ WILLIAM was listed as a member of a church at New Providence, Essex, New Jersey, USA, in 1769.^5,18 He lived on 11 February 1772 at Borough of Elizabeth, Essex, New Jersey, USA; William Parrat Sr executor of will of William Bartlen; proved 30 June 1772.¹⁹ He left a will on 8 November 1784 at Essex, New Jersey, USA; sons William, THOMAS, and Samuel mentioned; no daughters mentioned.²⁰ WILLIAM died on 14 November 1784 at New Providence, Essex, New Jersey, USA, at age 70.^5,21,2,12 His estate was probated on 7 December 1784.²²

He was a private in the Morris County (New Jersey) Militia, pensioned in 1833. Source: Arleen Sifleet's notes. Her notes read as follows:

"Wm in Essex b. 9/21/1760 d. Morris 3/27/1836 16 yr. Hanover Co. until after father's death - petition 2/27/1890 filed in Wash D.C.

"Wm Parrot - His Service: One month from 10/1/1776 in Col Jack Ford's command, then early in November 1776, he with his whole company was called out under his Capt and Col. Ellis Cook of one month (but emergency required 3 months) for guard duty at Elizabethtown, N. J. and neighboring landing places used by the enemy when crossing in boats from Staten Island and was there when after the capture of Fort Washington (11/16/1776) and evacuation of Fort Lee (11/18/1776) General Washington retreated through New Jersey into Pennsylvania.

"As the main army passed by the place where Parrot was stationed, he, with his company, fell in the rear of the army and accompanied it to Plainfield where he was stationed until 3 months expired, and he returned home.

"Under the same officers he was out for 1 month in January and February 1777, in the vicinity of Plainfield and Springfield, the enemy then occupying New Brunswick, to guard the lines and was in a skirmish at Lamptown (?) and another at Quibbletown (?) [these are Arleen's question marks]. After the British occupied Philadelphia (9/26/1777) the Americans continued to hold the forts in the Delaware below the city to prevent the war transport vessels passing, but the fleet soon attacked there, and Parrot, with his company, was ordered to new(?) fort, but before he arrived it had surrendered in 11/1777. During the period covered by 1777-78-79-80-81, besides the places mentioned, he was under Capts Kitchen, Brown, Laryton, Bates, Husman at Elizabethton several times, at Monmouth in the battle (6/28/1778 an excessive hot day), at Haddenfield, Hackensack in a skirmish, at Morristown guarding prisoners, at Connecticut Farms when burnt (6/6/1780), at Springfield when burnt (6/13/1780), Amboy, Acquackneck (?), and when the Pennsylvania line revolted (1/1781), besides some sources not specified in 1781 & 2.

It is possible to interpret Arlien's notes to imply that William Jr first married Phebe Wade 11 Sep 1777. If so, she must have died shortly thereafter, because he married "Katy Wms" 15 Jul 1779. She has the marriage to Katy Wms listed twice, both same date, same church, but both crossed out. Why? I have tentatively entered the marriage to Phebe Wade.

George Townley Parrott's manuscript:

"William and Thomas Parrot possessed [crossed and "owned" written above in pencil] the farm of their father ["William Senior" written above] after his death. And I was informed that my [preceeding phrase completely crossed out; "My" inserted] Grandfather Squier Parrot was born on the old farm, but that in his early boyhood his father ["William Parrot" penciled in above] moved with his family across the river into Morris County about 3 miles from the old farm and had a place on the Passaic Valle road where he said William Parrot and his wife lived an died. ["He" penciled in] was iin the war of the Revolution and drew a pension, father tells me, up to time of his death, he recalls going with him ("his grandfather" penciled in) to Morristown where it was paid him ["him" crossed out]. William Parrot died Mch 27, 1836. aged 75 years 6 mos. Catherine Parrot his widow - Died Mch 15, 1850 Aged 897 yrs. 1mo. 17 dys."

From NJ Calendar of Wills, 1786-1790, p 174:

"1787, March 17. Parrot, Thomas, of Essex Co. Ward. Son of William Parrot, of said Co., deceased. Said Ward, being out of wardship of Abigail Parrot, and having an estate of L2000 [2000 pounds], makes choice of Kennedy Vance as his Guardian.

1787, March 17. Guardian - Kennedy Vance, of Morris Co. Fellowbondsman - Benjamin Pettit, of Essex Co. Lib. 20, p. 419"

I take this to mean that his mother ABIGAIL (SHIPMAN) has just died, hence making him "out of wardship of Abigail Parrot". Then, since he is still not 21, he has to have a legal ward, so he chooses Mr Vance.

"Thomas [Parrot] who was a JP for Morris Co NJ for many yrs & d at Long Hill NJ on 21 Sep 1840"

The Daniel Mulford Letters contain several references to THOMAS, the most interesting perhaps being that of 12 Mar 1811, from Betsey Crane to her brother Daniel:

"...Thomas Parrot is magistrate in Morris County"

This shows that he was a judge long before 1837. Also, we have the following from Aunt Arlien's notes:

There is a problem with the attribution of the children listed here: 3 of them are baptized, according to Arlien Sifleet's notes in 1797, but the putative parents were married in 1783. Nevertheless, most of the names match between Arlien's records and the following from First Settlers:

This is hard to decipher. First, there is a Morris Plains near Hanover. Second, Samuel Parrott m Polly Thompson. One way to read this is that Anita Thompson is Polly Thompson's (Mrs. Parrott's) grandmother and she lives in Morris Plains.

Records of New Providence Church (transcribed by George Parrot) notes "Mary W. of Sam Parrot" on 2 Oct 1815 (p. 119) is connected to the church. On 8 Jan 1815 "Joanna Parrot ab." is listed (p. 119), where ab. = absent. Samuel was born before 6 November 1763.² He was baptized at New Providence Presbyterian, New Providence, Essex, New Jersey, USA, on 6 November 1763. Religion: (an unknown value).^3,4,5 He was the son of WILLIAM PARROTT and ABIGAIL [= Widow Clark] SHIPMAN. He married Mary "Polly" Thompson at New Providence Church, New Providence, Essex, New Jersey, USA, on 18 August 1783.^6,7

     Catharine "Katy" Williams Revolutionary Soldiers, New Providence: p 57: "Parrot, William, (Jr.) ... m. July 15, 1779, Catherine, d. March 15, 1850, aged 87 yrs., 1 mo., 24 dys; dau. of John Williams." Birth calculated from death date.

But, from Gravestones, Methodist Burying Ground, New Providence NJ:
"Parrot, Catharine, wife of William, 1773-Mar.15,1860 ae. 87"

So there is a question about whether the death year is 1850 or 1860"

This seems to fix the date at 1850, not 1860. Catharine was born at ?Northfield, NJ, on 22 January 1763. Gravestone gives 1773-Mar.15, 1860. Seems to be off 10 years from all other evidence. It is, see death text.^3,4,5 She was the daughter of John Williams. She married Pvt William Parrott Jr at Whippany Presbyterian Church, Whippany, Morris, New Jersey, USA, on 15 July 1779.^6,7,1,2 Catharine applied for a military pension at Morris, New Jersey, USA, on 8 June 1839. 22 Sep 1838 is date of application for pension
8 Jun 1839 is evidentally date of approval.^2,8 Catharine died on 15 March 1850 at New Jersey, USA, at age 87. Gravestone gives 1773-Mar.15, 1860. Seems to be off 10 years from all other evidence. He married Phebe Wood, sister of Samuel Wood, who went to Dayton, Ohio. She was also a sister of the wife of George Brown, and of Esther, the wife of Jonathan Totten."

Then 7 children are listed: 1. Daniel, 2. Betsey, 3. John, 4. Dennis, 5. Polly, 6. Electa, and 7. Joseph. In particular:

"1. Daniel, who married Abigail Parrot, daughter of Samuel Parrot, and died. ...

2. Betsey married William Parrot, son of Thomas Parrot...."

Since Betsey is known to have been born in 1783, I have assumed the order above is the correct one and estimated births at approximately 2 year intervals for the children. We also know that Electa was born in 1792. BENJAMIN was born at Somerset, New Jersey, USA, circa 1760. Benjamin WOOD evidence gives b c1764, "Prb Green Brook, Somerset Co, Nj". For the same reasons as I used to estimate his wife's birth (see text for her birth), I estimate his birth at c1760 instead.

Arlien's notes claim he, his wife, and his daughter were all born in England..^2,3 He married PHEBE WOOD circa 1780. See birth text for how I estimated marriage date as c1780.⁴

Assume Daniel b 1781, hence Benjamin and Phebe married c 1780. Then her birth c 1760 is a better guess..³ She was the daughter of JEREMIAH WOOD. She married BENJAMIN HAND circa 1780. See birth text for how I estimated marriage date as c1780.⁴ PHEBE died before September 1822 at Essex, New Jersey, USA.²

     Daniel Hand "Of Morristown'', according to Arleen Sifleet. He and Abigail had no issue. They were married at the Basking Ridge Presbyterian Church by Dr. Robert Finley. The record shows his name as David instead of Daniel.

My reading of the First Settlers of Passaic Valley (qv) suggests that the evidence above is shaky. There was a Hand family of Basking Ridge but that book claims to have found no relation between it and the Benjamin Hand family of Long Hill.

First Settlers p 174: "Daniel, who married Abigail Parrot, daughter of Samuel Parrot, and died." Daniel was born at Essex, New Jersey, USA, circa 1781. The LDS text gives "Abt 1790". Further evidence: his marriage is known to be 1804..^3,4 He was the son of BENJAMIN HAND and PHEBE WOOD. He married Abigail Parrott at Basking Ridge Presbyterian Churc, Basking Ridge, Somerset, New Jersey, USA, on 15 February 1804. Arlien's own notes give both 15 Feb and 16 Feb 1804 as marriage date..¹ Daniel died circa 1805. The wording of the evidence implies that he married (15 Feb 1804) and then died shortly thereafter, with no children..³

Polly Parrot, Isaac Crane, 1 Mar 1816, Morris, #1314453-4. Mary was born circa 1793.¹ She was the daughter of THOMAS PARROTT Esq and ROSANNAH RUTAN. She married Isaac Crane at Morris, New Jersey, USA, on 1 March 1816.^4,2 Mary died on 13 August 1822 at New Jersey, USA.¹ Her body was interred at New Providence, Essex, New Jersey, USA, at Methodist Burying Ground.¹

     WILLIAM PARROTT First Settlers, p 313: "William [Parrott], who married Betsey hand, daughter of Benjamin, went to Ohio, and had children: 1. Abraham, who married Margaret Birdsal; 2. Sylvester married Henrietta Ogden; 3. Abigail married Daniel Hoffman; 4. Electa married ____; 5. Thomas married _____; 6. Anne married Jonah Marlow; 7. Simeon; 8. Daniel."

Birdsal and Hoffman appear to be errors in this list.

Arlien Sifleet recorded the following in her notes about William and Betsy: "Came from New Jersey to Washington Co., Pa. 1817. Moved from there to Crestline in 1831. Moved from there to Mt. Gilead - lived there 6 months. Moved from there to Gerncey Co., O. - lived there 10 yrs. Moved from there to within 8 miles to Parkersburg Va. Moved from there to Athens Co., where they died.''

The Bethel M.E. Church is about 1/2 mile away from the cemetery, near Coolville, Ohio. I recorded this cemetery 27 May 1974, and have pictures of the church bldg, and some of the stones (but not Parrotts).

The tombstone calculator gives 7 Nov 1787 as his birthdate. It gives 20 Oct 1783 as hers.

Cemetery Records, Athens Co, p 21, gives the same info except death date for Elizabeth is 31 Jul 1865. This would give her birthdate as 7 Nov 1783.
