     Hiram van Valkenburg 1855 Census, 72: "4.1 VANVALKENBURG Hiram 30 SCHOHARIE" right next to "4.2 LAWYER Gabriel 41 SCHOHARIE". This supports the evidence that has Hiram Van Valkenburg married to Sophronia Hortense Durand and Gabriel Lawyer married to her sister Sarah Durand.

The following from Rick van Valkenburg, email 8 Dec 2001 answering my questions about the Van Valkenburg website:

"I ... looked up Sophronia in the source db file for the GED-to-HTML records on the WWW site.

"1850 age 30 [census?] DEATH: died age 40 yrs 9 days Cobleskill, Schoharie Co, NY"

There is no source listed for the birth and death records, other than to say that Sophronia is buried in Cobbleskill NY, which leads me to surmise that perhaps hte source is tombstone or cemetery/church records. I found Sophronia listed in the Van Valkenburg Family in America, Vol II with the excerpt below. ... This does not prove that Sophonia is our Sophronia Durand, but the time and place are about right.

Luckhurst (transcription of Cady), Schoharie Families is noted for its errors, but here is its entry, in vol 4, Van Valkenburg section:

Cady (not very trustworthy) has "Hiram Van Valkenburg, b. 1825 "Sharon" married Sophronia Decker, b. 1821: Mary Jane, b. 1850 Lydia H. 1855, Amanda, b. 1815, "Boarder" " Amanda is an unknown boarder, Decker is certainly not Durand or even close..^5,4,6 A census listed Hiram as head of household at Fulton, Schoharie, New York, USA, in 1855.¹ He married Eva Ann (?) after 27 February 1860. Death of first wife - but judging by Van Valkenburg Family in America Vol II, Evy Ann is Hiram's sister, not his wife..^7,4 Hiram died on 31 August 1904 at Cobleskill, Schoharie, New York, USA, at age 79.^3,8 His body was interred at Cobleskill, Schoharie, New York, USA, at Cobleskill Rural Cemetery.⁴

     John Van Valkenburg Jr However there is a Jacob Van Valkenburg 57 living nearby Hiram in the 1855 census in Fulton, Schoharie Co, NY. There is also a potential brother William C V Van Valkenburg 32 living nearby.

Perhaps Johannes Falck & Elisabeth are NOT the same as Johannes Valkenburg and Elisabet Feek, because there is this listing in St Paul's Lutheran Baptisms:

75, 1780: "_._ Johannes Falck, Elisabeth, 1621, Johannes b 4.9, [sponsors:] Peter Veeg and wife" [NB Veeg is a form of Feek]

which conflicts with the Johannes recorded here b 1776. If different people then "sister" Lena is not a sister.


Barber, Schoharie Cemeteries, 6:93 (Slate Hill Cemetery, Sharon NY):
"Van Valkenburgh John Jr July 23 1855 84y, Mary w June 14 1860 83-7-28". This implies John Jr b 1771, wife Mary, d 23 Jul 1855. Doesn't quite seem to fit. John was born at Schoharie, New York, USA, on 23 March 1776. I am not convinced that this John Jr, son of Johannes and Elizabeth Feek is the John who married Phoebe..^2,3,4 He was the son of ?Johannes (John) Valkenburg (Valk) and ?Elizabeth (Elisabet) Feek. He was baptized at Reformed Church, Schoharie, Schoharie, New York, USA, on 28 April 1776. Religion: (an unknown value). See note with birth.^2,4 He married Phoebe Waggoner at St Paul's Lutheran, Schoharie, Schoharie, New York, USA, on 23 November 1823. The marriage record remarks "Middleburgh" so perhaps they were married in Middleburgh but the marriage recorded at St Pauls.^5,6 John died on 23 July 1855 at age 79. Online genealogy has 1849 Fulton NY; not clear if we are talking same John Jr because Barber has wife as Mary and death 1855 at 84 implying b 1771..⁷ His body was interred at Sharon, Schoharie, New York, USA, at Slate Hill Cemetery.⁷

The marriage record remarks "Middleburgh" so perhaps they were married in Middleburgh but the marriage recorded at St Pauls.^2,3

     Eva was born on 28 October 1838.^1,2 She married Hiram van Valkenburg after 27 February 1860. She married Carleton Robinson at Cobleskill, Schoharie, New York, USA, on 29 December 1875.² Lydia died on 20 January 1915 at Deerfield, Lenawee, Michigan, USA, at age 61.³
