Sarah was born. She The evidence points to Sarah being a Blomley, married to Thomas Smith, with several children, including at least Alice and Sarah Ann.
Letter of 3 May 1857: "I have to state to you that last Wednesday I attended Sarah Smith's funeral. your sister." Since Henry Hargreaves had no sister Sarah, this must mean his sister-in-law, making her a Blomley married to Smith. Also in this letter: "Thomas Smith's Mother also was at the funeral she looks very cant at her age [cant is old British dialect for merry, or hearty]. Thomas has 6 children and I think as nice a family as ever you saw. they are so staid. Alice is very motherly and I think will look after the children." Assuming that Thomas is Sarah's husband Smith, then they had six children. I guess from the wording here that Alice is probably the oldest child, or oldest girl, who will take on the mothering duties with Sarah's death.
Now the earlier letter of 24 Jun 1852 makes sense: "Thomas Smith seems to be doing very well. Alice & Sarah Ann are Weavers at Drydales' Mill. I thought Sarah herself did not look so well in person as to enjoy very good health, but folks do lose their healthy appearance as they advance in age." Indeed, she is dead by 3 May 1857. Since we believe Alice is a daughter, this suggests that Sarah Ann is too.
Also, the letter of 24 Jun 1854 says, "Thomas Smith is working at Wm Hudson's Machine shop, Burnley. The family are all well but Sarah ages fast". No doubt, this refers to his wife, given the above. She was the daughter of THOMAS BLOMLEY and SARAH TAFFENDEN. She married Thomas Smith. Sarah died on 25 April 1857 at Burnley, Lancashire, England.2 Her body was interred on 29 April 1857 at Padiham, Lancashire, England, at Cheapside Church Yard nr Burnley.3

"[cont. from the above quote] She died very suddenly of a disease called acute perritonitis which I think was caused by strangulated hernia. that is to rupture in its worst form. she had gone to see some friends at Lower house and had only got there about half an hour when she was seized. I understand she suffered a great deal but her sickness was short and she died in about two days from the commencement at the same place but she was brought home to Burnley on the Saturday in her coffin." So this makes her death date on or slightly before Saturday, April 25, 1857.
I do not know where "Lower house" is but must be near Burnley somewhere.

James was born at England. He Lived at Greem, according to a letter from James Hargreaves in Burnley, Lancashire to his brother Henry Hargreaves in NSW, Australia, 25 February 1845. (See also his letters of 24 June 1852, 7 August 1855, and December 1857. From these can be deduced that Uncle James is James Whittaker.)
Letter of 24 Jun 1852: "Uncle James died on the 8 of february last but Cousins Bridget and Eunice live together at the same place. I read them the letter and a part of the newspaper you sent. Thomas Smith seems to be doing very well. Alice & Sarah Ann are Weavers at Drydales' Mill. I thought Sarah herself did not look so well in person as to enjoy very good health, but folks do lose their helathy appearance as they advance in age." I take all these as direct kin, including marriage, of Uncle James. In particular, Bridget and Eunice appear to be daughters of his.
Letter of 24 Jun 1854: "I have to tell you that Cousin Bridget has got married to James Lager? Farmer Hopton. her 2 daughters are living with her at Fennyfold? Eunice is living at Padiham & her child. she's like a nervious old maid. Cousin Jimmy is partner with Jack Dodgson in a loom making concern in Burnley. You will perhaps know that he married Eliza Graham for his 2nd wife." Are Bridget's two daughters from a previous marriage? Does Eunice have a child?
Letter of 8 Jul 1855: "Cousin Whitaker is dead and buried. Bridget is doing well she seems to be a good farmers wife. Elisha looks a poor torn fellow having little? ... in him with a large family. Eunice is a fretting old maid. James is partner yet with Jack Dodgson at loom making. I think his wife wears the breeches. I have herad nothing of Elon." I don't know who the death refers to. Eunice apparently is a spinster (so what is "her child" above?). I take this as evidence that Bridget, Eunice, Elisha, James, and Elon are James Whitaker's children.
Letter of Dec 1857: "Cousins Eunice & Bridget are both well. Cousin James Whitaker and family left here & gone to America to his Wife's Brother, Paul Graham." So this proves that James is a Whitaker and thus I take Eunice, Bridget, etc, to be so also. He was the son of (?) WHITAKER. James died on 8 February 1852 at Lancashire, England.

Cousin Bridget is referrred to frequently in the evidence, which indicates strongly that she is a Whitaker and daughter to James.

I attach the part of my descent which shows where she marries in along with the references I have - Eyes Barn in Hapton is a couple of hundred yards down the hill towards the river from Fennyfold farm. The earliest known family origins are across the river in Simonstone, about a mile away, where land was bought in 1560."
Also, in Mr Sagar's code:

First Settlers lists 13 children, mother's name unknown. LDS family group sheet lists 12 children, mother's name unknown. WFT lists mother's name as Anna.
A problem with the LDS list is that the date of the marriage of Abraham 1762 is after the birthdates of five of his children. If it were a typo for 1752, then all would be well. That being so, I have put the marriage date as 1752. Of course, all this fiddling is highly suspect.
I am also having trouble with which wife of his father is Abraham's mother. The WFT evidence gives Elizabeth Sickle, but that can't be. The LDS evidence gives Geertruij Van der Hoef. The problem with the latter is that, Geertruij would have been 46 years old at the birth of Abraham. I suspect Peter had another wife between Gertrude and Elizabeth, who would be Abraham's mother.

Abraham is probably ABRAHAM, PETER's son. Rev Jonathan Elmer was pastor of the New Providence church where both attended. We know that Sarah, the widow, proceeded to marry a Mr Rutan with son Peter in Albany, but don't yet know which Mr Rutan that is. (See text for ELIZABETH, PETER's wife.)
The Hoyes of Maryland, 97-8:
"Pierre (Peter) Rutan, son of Abraham I, was baptized at New Paltz, N.Y., in 1691. Pieter Rettan married Geestruy Van der Hoef, Nov. 7, 1713. (Hackensack Church Record).
Joseph Frazee and Peter Rutan were among the earliest settler at New Providence, N.J., in 1736. Peter Rutan of Morris Co., N.J., made his will June 28, 1774; proved Aug. 7, 1774. I believe the 1736 date in New Providence comes from Hatfield's History of Elizabeth NJ, 571:

So this doesn't quite say Peter was in New Providence in 1736 but implies that he was there, probably, in 1736-8.
Cornelis Breyandt moved "to the neighborhood of Elizabethtown, where he made his will" on 2 Oct 1720 (proved 19 Dec 1720), with one witness being Peter Rutan. "John Rutan, son of Abraham II, married Catherine Jones of New JErsey in 1774 and "went west". In 1787 he was listed as a settler on Military Lots 3284, 3285, 3286 on the Blooming Rose, two miles south of Selbysport, Maryland. These lots he purchased from the State for six shillings, six pence [p 99] for each lot of fifty acres. This land made an excellent stock farm, known in recent years as the Runbaugh place. The Rutan log house was by the spring on the east side of the Blooming Rose road opposite the present farm house. Most of the neighbors -- Coddingtons, Frazees, VanSickle, Savage -- were also from New Jersey.
John Rutan was a typical pioneer settler; he had a large family, plenty of land and other very moderate resources. In 1798 he was assessed in Sandy Creek Hundred with 150 acres of land, one horse and seventeen cattle. His children may have attended either the Blooming Rose or Selbysport school. The Rutans were among the first members of the Methodist Congregation at Friend's, nearby. Rutan girls were noted singers in the neighborhood. W. Scott Friend told us that they often sat in the evening on the bluff overlooking the Youghiogheny River and sang hymns heard for miles over the quiet valley.
The Rutans planted a fine apple orchard on the slope above their home; some of the trees still [1942] bear fruit; the "Rutan Pippin" is the last of the Rutans on the Blooming Rose. The family graveyard is at the upper side of the orchard. Here stands a modest sandstone monument with a bronze tablet inscribed to the Pioneer settlers, John Rutan and Catherine Jones, 1787, erected by the descendants of Mary Rutan and William W. Hoye, in 1935.

The pioneer, his wife Catherine, and probably Isaac and Anne are buried in the farm graveyard.
David Rutan was Justice of the Peace of his District in 1814. In 1845 he sold the remainder of the Rutan farm, 64 acres, to John Slicer. All the Rutans left Maryland except Mary, who married W. W. Hoye."

In the name of God Amen I John Rutan of Allegany County and State of Maryland being sick and weak in body but of sound and disposing mind memory and understanding considering the certainty of death and the uncertainty of the time thereof and being desirous to settle my worldly affairs and thereby be the better prepared to leave this world when it shall please [252] God to call me hence do therefore make and publish this my last will and testament in manner and form following that is to say First and principally I commit my sole into the hands of Almighty God and my body to the earth to be decently buried at the discretion of my Executor hereinafter named and after my debts and funeral charges are paid I leave to my dear wife Catherine one third of the hole amount of my esate if she shall outlive me and after her death to my son David.

JOHN BAKER First Families, Carroll Co, evidence:
"The traceable family history of the John Baker family begins in South Carolina where John was born during 1781. He spent his childhood there as he grew toward maturity and he was then united in marriage with a South Carolina girl. Then, like so many of their peers, the Bakers began a life of mobility as they began to move westward in search of a better life for themselves and their children.
By the early 1800's they had found their way into Kentucky and John Baker's first two sons, Aaron (1805) and Sheppard (1810) were born there. From there the family moved into Tennessee for a time and then on to Southeastern Missouri, to settle on Crooked Creek, near Marble Hill in what is now Bollinger County. There two more children were born, Frances "Frankie" Baker (1815-1845) and Jonathan Baker (1817). Also, the Federal Census of 1830 for Cape Girardeau County, Missouri, records another unknown son, younger than the aforementioned Sheppard, who did not migrate into Northwest Arkansas with this historic family.
Another even happened in the life of John Baker while the family was still in Missouri. Evidently his first wife died and he was united in marriage with Nancy Bolin.
On October 11, 1832, the growing Baker family left their homes on Crooked Creek to begin a journey by wagon train into the Northwest Arkansas Ozark Geographical Region. The family members who made that trip were as follows: John Baker and his second wife, Nancy (Bolin) Baker, and their three children, Willie Elizabeth Baker (1828), Jackson Baker (1829), and Benjamin Baker (1830); John Baker's son, Aaron Baker and his wife, Barbara (Schell) Baker, and their four children, John Sherman Baker, Fannie Baker, Mary Baker, and Frederick Baker; and John Baker's teenage children by his first marriage, Frances "Frankie" Baker and Jonathan Baker.
This historic family crossed the Kings River, at the mouth of Keel Creek, on January 1, 1833. Three days later they selected a home site south of Osage Creek, about three miles west of what would become Berryville, Arkansas, in an area that became known as the Shady Grove region of Carroll County. Their journey had been a long one as they traveled by way of Springield, Missouri, Bentonville, Arkansas, Fayetteville, Arkansas, and on across the prairie lands toward Hindsville. From there they followed the less timbered ridge tops northeast to the headwaters of Keels Creeks. There they crossed the Kings River and on to their new homesite in the Osage Valley.
After his arrival, John Baker established a hand-operated, steel grain mill in the western part of Carroll County and that mill provided a needed agricultural service for other early settlers."

There are several problems with the JOHN BAKER genealogical research, so please read the following.
There are several sources of evidence for this family, sometimes conflicting: from Jo Ann Locher Johnson (based on estates), from researcher George Miller, from World Family Tree #0249 (compiler unknown) on Family Tree Maker's collection of trees distributed on CDs, from Jenny Long's GEDCOM, from an article by Jim Lair and a book by him, and from The Shoecobbler's Kin by Lorena Shell Eaker.
He is John Baker in JoAnn Locher's evidence. She lists the following children, in this order: William, Aaron, Sheppard, James, Jonathan, Frances ("Franky") as the heirs Willie Elmey Johnson Baker and John Baker. Jo Ann, in an email, says that the book "The Shoecobbler's Kin" by Lorena Shell Eaker proposes that Aaron might be William Aaron, but Jo Ann's evidence, an estate settlement, separates the two. Jo Ann lists a second wife Nancy Bolin.
He is Jonathan Baker in the George Miller evidence that lists the children, in this order: Aaron, Sheppard, Francis, Jonathan, Willie, Jackson, Benjamin, Solomon Richard, Sarah Jane. George has these as children of Agnes Denny b 1789 in VA (perhaps) and lists a second wife Elizabeth Nancy Boren.
He is Jonathan "John" Baker in the WFT evidence. Here his first wife is listed as "Sheppard" (presumably her surname, since there was such a family in the area at the time), with children in order: William Aaron, Sheppard, Frances "Frankie", and Jonathan. The second wife is listed as Elizabeth Nancy Bolin with children Willie Elizabeth, Jackson, Benjamin, Solomon, and Sarah.
Another piece of evidence, the Sheppard family tree for the Cape Girardeau County, MO area lists Sarah Sheppard b 4 Dec 1804 married "1)_______Baker 2)James W. Bennett". This is the right time and place for her to have married Jonathan "John" Baker as her first husband, but this fact does not show up in the other trees other than the one "Sheppard" entry as first wife in the WFT evidence. There is therefore a mystery here. Conceivably John Baker married three times (say, to Sarah Sheppard, Willie Elmey Johnson, then Elizabeth Nancy Bolin) but this would require Sarah Sheppard to have divorced, an unlikely event considering that these people were all apparently quite strong Baptists.
Other researchers also believe John had 3 wives, but they are listed as Willie Elmey Johnson, Agnes Denny, and Nancy Bolin, in that order. Jim Lair's article claims Agnes and Jonathan married in Wayne Co., KY on 27 Nov 1813, but this implies Frances and Jonathan are not Willie Elmey's children, contradicted by her father's estate.
The unusual name Sheppard Baker makes sense if one of his grandparents had the surname Sheppard. We know that Willie Elmey was dead by 1823 (from her father's estate), which is consistent with the WFT listing of children born from 1828 on (1825 on in George Miller's tree) to be assigned to wife Elizabeth Nancy Bolin. It also makes some sense that Sarah's children (assuming she was wife number one) would be listed as Willie's heirs, as they were in her father's will. But perhaps it makes more sense to assume they are Willie's children, and that one of them, Sheppard, was named to honor the first wife's family. Notice that the two girls mothered by Nancy Bolin are named Willie and Sarah, perhaps in honor of the first two wives? But there remains the mystery of what happened to Sarah Sheppard before she went on to marry James Bennett and be buried in the Bennett cemetery. And why is she not listed at all by several sources? How does Agnes Denny, who IS mentioned by several sources, fit into all this?
Jenny Long's evidence adds another possible wife to the mix: Susan Kennedy (and also "Unknown Sheppard" as another wife). Jonathan married her, according to this evidence, in Williamson County, Texas, 14 Oct 1802. Nobody else mentions this woman. The place is suspect.
Summary: Don't trust the wives in this entry. Some of them can't be right. My current belief: wife 1 is Willie Elmey Johnson, wife 2 is Nancy Bolin. No additional evidence points to Susan Kennedy. The evidence for ? Sheppard is slim. Although a Jonathan Baker must have married Agnes Denny in 1813, there is no strong evidence linking this Jonathan with our John. In fact, it might be a confusion of Jonathan with John that is the source of this probable error. The David Johnson (Willy Elmey's father) estate evidence is the strongest proof that Agnes could not have been John/Jonathan's wife at the stated time, as argued above.
Because of the arguments above I have removed two of the marriages from the database: the marriage of 14 Oct 1802 to Susan Kennedy and the marriage of 27 Nov 1813 to Agnes Denny, as of 8 Mar 2000.
Also, since the documentation actually supports only the name John, I have changed the name JONATHAN "John" BAKER to JOHN BAKER. Not only is this consistent with the known documentation, but it does not encourage us to confuse John and Jonathan, which are nearly always treated as distinct names.
Finally, since the sources I trust do not use Elizabeth in the name of the second wife, I shall drop that now, awaiting further evidence to the contrary.

"... From the 1850 & 1860 Census AR Carroll Co. Prairie Twp, he was born in 1780/1781 South Carolina. From the Carroll County, AR Tax Records 1861, he was still paying Land Tax on 80 acres. No Tax Records available during the Civil War. By 1865 there is no John Baker listed, so I do not have any definite death date for John Baker ...
As I scan the Carroll County AR Tax Records, I find John Baker & Aaron paid taxes in 1834."

For what it's worth: Carroll Co became official 1 Nov 1833 by an act of the US Congress. It was formed from the western part of Izard Co, effective 25 Dec 1833..8 JOHN was listed as the head of a family on the on 1 June 1850 Census at Carroll, Arkansas, USA.12,14 JOHN died in 1862 at Osage Valley, Carroll, Arkansas, USA.29,30,18 His body was interred in 1862 at Carroll, Arkansas, USA, at Baker-Bussey Cemetery.31

WILLIE ELMEY JOHNSON Wilhameny and Wyhlemy are variant spellings of her name. These are probably corruptions of the feminine form of Wilhelm, or Wilhelmina. There are several other women members of the family with similar names.
